Title: index finger pain shooting split finger
Post by: darktater on December 08, 2020, 06:55:03 PM
I get a pinch or something on my index finger (nock side) when shooting split finger. I'm more comfortable shooting 3 under, but my 'groups' are cut about in half shooting split. Not sure what is up with that.

Details: I'm shooting a Two Tracks 50" Ambush recurve, 49#@28", drawing almost 28" actual.

I think it is a combination of the short bow, along with whatever I'm doing wrong. I've been away from archery for quite some time, so I'm almost starting over.

Any suggestions are appreciated

thanks,
Pete

I'd say it has a lot to do with the length of your bow.

I'm guessing you are correct. I'm continuing to work on a consistent shot sequence, and that is showing improvements with the 3 under.

Thanks,

Pete

50" is short, but not that short for a 28" draw. Try putting the majority of the pressure on your middle finger and use a deep hook.

I shoot split finger as well.  Your bow is short, and that contributes to pinch.  My tournament bow is 70", and hunting bows are 64/66".  A longer bow is more forgiving, and more comfortable as well.  I like to have fun, and be comfortable otherwise what's the point?
Any suggestions are appreciated

thanks scriv! I'll be getting another (additional) bow in the near future, and that one will be longer. The ambush is really handy for tight situation though.

I'm an East Tennessee native myself..

Good luck with it, you'll figure it out.  Might check to make sure you're getting a deep hook.  That might help.

I've got it shooting better 3 under, mostly operator error. I'm getting there

Thanks again

The problem you described when shooting split finger suggests that you are putting down pressure on the arrow nock with your index finger...which may mean your draw elbow is too high or your draw wrist is pitched too far forward, forcing your index finger down onto the arrow.  If your arrow looks to be bending (profile view) when at full draw then one or both of these issues is probably part of the problem.
