Alright, y'all are officially off the leash. Good luck and have fun! :archer2:
-
Well, since Rody is in, I have located a fully rotten 2x4 down by the creek. :biglaugh:
-
Well stick it in your form...
-
Gonna take extra glue ...
-
Just put them gwass bubbles in the glue...
Took this out of the form yesterday, may use it for the swap bow, may not.
Glued up a riser almost like them gwass bow guys make:)
Can't remember what the darker wood is, brain fart..
Center wood is curly maple.
Glued up tip overlays too, buffalo horn and curly maple.
Used EA40 for riser and tips.
-
Any ideas on this wood species?
Fairly hard wood, smooth fine grain.
-
If it's fairly heavy it could be tiger wood (Goncalo Alves)
If its on the lighter side, Paduak... Paduak also has bright orange saw dust...
-
It's not super heavy but not super light either.
Could be Paduak as I remember having some of that...
Thanks Rich
-
Roy
Duh :knothead: :banghead:
-
Hey I'm a senior citizen, that's my excuse:)
-
Ok, the wood is Brazilian Cherry.
AKA Jatoba.

Does it have a ka-not in it
-
Do you see any ka-nots?:)
-
I gots to get me a long pole and knock that walnut limb to the ground afore I can cut it up fer my bow bein its a TD there are a couple of pretty good limbs up there to. :biglaugh: I will have to kindle dry them first tho.
-
Do you see any ka-nots?:)
Did you see any Ka-nots on that Osage a couple weeks ago :deadhorse:
-
Nope and won't matter in the riser..
-
Building an RC for the swap. First one EVER! :o
Good luck Victim. :biglaugh:
Here's the template. Gonna have to pick up more material for the form.
First off will be to establish the formula and then as many more as needed to make a bow good enough for the swap.
-

-
Got some wood together for my swap bow.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Some good Canadian worm eaten spruce for the belly.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Something for the core.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
And some more quality spruce for the riser.
And there’s a nicely dinged up slat of bamboo as well for the back.
I’ll include a safety helmet when I ship.
Dave.
-
Dave, you are assigned Kennym:)
-
Woo Hoo!!! I’ll make it a takedown. I’m sure I have an old door hinge lying around. 😁
Dave.
-
Cool the ole guy in Linneus Mo. could use another hinge:)
Out of the hot box, needs cleaned up.
-
Just for clarity, that wood is just a small sample of the quality lumber they supply us with at work to build skids and crates for the valves we build. 😕
Dave.
-
That bottom got some splat in it that will be nice. :bigsmyl:
-
Looks like this should have some nice straight grain for one of those fancy wood bows. I only make those ugly glass bows so I'll have to chop it up, maybe use it in my victims bow!
-
I’d love to see the inside of that bit of wood!
Dave.
-
Here's a little peak Dave.

-
Am I the only one that wouldn't mind seeing that wormy spruce stabilized? Would make a pretty awesome riser.
-
should have some awesome veneers in there
-
Travis LOL.
That's some pretty wood inside.
-
That would look amazing in a riser. What wood is it?
Dave.
-
It's Siberian Elm
-
I ordered some Bocote veneers from Kennym.
and some Blood wood online for overlays
-
It's Siberian Elm
when are you going to cut it up?
-
I cut a small burl off it last night and i don't think it's dry enough. I thought it was dead when I cut it a year ago but I was wrong. I'm worried about it checking bad.
-
Can't help you there
-
I just read a post somewhere by Big Jim where I think he said he boils it to dry it . I’m sure it needs to be cut into boards first .
-
Am I the only one that wouldn't mind seeing that wormy spruce stabilized? Would make a pretty awesome riser.
You are not alone, I love the look of worm wood.
I made some knife scales from wormy Locust, it's gorgeous.
-
That wormy spruce really is just junk. The holes are almost big enough for me to put my little finger in and the wood is too soft to be any good. Most of that ends up in the firewood pile. When I come across pieces like that I can only use them in non load bearing areas or just toss them if they’re bad enough.
If it was hardwood, I would fill the holes with colored epoxy. That would be something.
Dave.
-
I just searched boiling wood and it sounds like a lot of turners use that method. Might try it with a block of it. Just need to get down to use my buddy’s saw mill.
-
Man, l would love to see that in a riser.
Speaking of boiling wood, I have some cool riser blanks that I glued up that would require the back lams to curve up the ramps like on a Black Widow. Can bamboo be boiled and formed to the curve or would dry heat work better?
Dave.
-
Thin out the boo in the ramp area as much as possible
-
I do thin it quite a bit. It will be about 1/8” thick in the center. The problem is that there’s a fairly tight radius to the ramps and I would like to pre form the bamboo so it won’t break when I clamp it. Here’s a picture of the risers.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
If I can get it to work, I’ll build on one of these.
Dave.
-
Very nice, David.
Got the riser cleaned up and glued it and the tip overlays on the bow.
My biggest concern was getting the center strip of the riser centered with the boo backing, never did a 3 section riser before.
It was sort of a guessing thing as the Osage belly was not exactly the same width on each side sticking out past the boo backing, was about 1/8th difference. Time will tell, heck I'm hoping for Kenny's name anyways:)
I precut the end of the riser before glue up to make it easier to finish it after glue up. I always need to be careful shaping removing wood off the end of the riser without removing wood from the belly lam.
Did I mention that patience is not one of my best traits?:)
Riser glued on with unibond800 and tips glued on with EA40.
I first wrap the tips with plastic wrap, then secure with heavy gum bands.
-
That's a purdy riser roy
-
Thanks Mark, I like it too..

Are yah Sure..??? I got some Jatoba and it is the heaviest, hardest wood that I ever worked with... You said that it was not super heavy... 57lbs. to me is pretty damn heavy... Feels like I am holding a chunk of concrete...
Just checking........
-
This piece was only 13 x 2 x 2.
May have weighed 3 pounds.
Too late now, LOL.
Guy who gave it too me said it was Jatoba.
Ya ever have any IPE wood, Rich?
Now that wood weighs as much as concrete...
-
It sure looks like jatoba to me. Easy for me to compare, I’m surrounded by it. The living room floor. 😁
It makes a good solid riser
Dave.
-
Can bamboo be boiled and formed to the curve or would dry heat work better?
No personal experience with bamboo, but the guys that form it for recurve tips and the like seem to always use dry heat. They also use a form where the bamboo is pushed down into the form rather than bent around the outside so that the outer fibres are untouched.
57lbs. to me is pretty damn heavy...
That isn't much heavier than the hard maple I have used. It is usually around 54lb/cu.ft.
Mark
-
I think I’m going to try both ways to bend my bamboo. I tried once with the heat gun and I wasn’t happy with the results. Could be I did something wrong. I need to get it to bend backwards as the risers I want to use are forward style.
I’m going to puta form together and I’ll post the results.
Dave.

Yes, it does... As partial as I am to the looks of Sheoak and the pride in milling it myself... I would like to make a nice bow with an over-sized riser out of Jatoba for myself to shoot target and 3-D... You can't beat the stuff... It is inexpensive, heavy and I believe non-oily... But it is tuff on tools...

You gots yo'self some damn heavy maple then... Last I looked maple was 44 lb. cu. ft.... And I can feel a drastic difference when I lift the two different woods...

Did he volunteer some tip overlay material? :)
-
The weather is killing me. Not terrible cold but with no heat I'm only good for about 15 minutes. Kinda excited about this first run at a RC.
-
Ya need a wood burner out there Mike.
-
He said it's free but don't know where he left it ... :biglaugh:
-
You gots yo'self some damn heavy maple then... Last I looked maple was 44 lb. cu. ft.... And I can feel a drastic difference when I lift the two different woods...
The maple bow I posted was 53lb/cu.ft. I did a mollegabet style maple bow for my first and it was around that as well. I figured that was typical for hard maple....
If your maple is 44lb/cu.ft. then 57lb/cu.ft. would be a huge difference.
Mark
-
I'm just getting my info off wood data base... I never weighed it... Are you saying that you weighed your wood and calculated the cu. ft weight???
Tree Size: 80-115 ft (25-35 m) tall,
2-3 ft (.6-1.0 m) trunk diameter
Average Dried Weight: 44.0 lbs/ft3 (705 kg/m3)
Specific Gravity (Basic, 12% MC): .56, .71
Janka Hardness: 1,450 lbf (6,450 N)
Modulus of Rupture: 15,800 lbf/in2(109.0 MPa)
Elastic Modulus: 1,830,000 lbf/in2(12.62 GPa)
Crushing Strength: 7,830 lbf/in2 (54.0 MPa)
Shrinkage: Radial: 4.8%, Tangential: 9.9%,
Volumetric: 14.7%, T/R Ratio: 1.9
-
We’re likely talking about extremes here. As it says in the stats, “average dried weight”. A lot depends on the individual tree, where it grows, conditions, etc.
I’ve seen a sugar maple over 5’ wide for at least 8’ of trunk.
I have worked with a ton of black walnut. I don’t know what it says in the book, but I have some that’s hard and heavy and has a ring to it when you hit it and I have some that’s light and soft as pine.
All the jatoba that I have worked with has been heavy and hard and very strong. I find that it can be splintery though.
Dave.
-
Are you saying that you weighed your wood and calculated the cu. ft weight???
Yeah, I weighed the board before I started cutting it up just out of curiosity. It's easy to calculate the volume of a rectangular prism and a kitchen scale handles that much weight with no issues.
Mark
-
So now you guys are weighing your wood?
Too much information...

  I know wood can vary but did not think it could vary that much... I thought 3 to 5 lbs. max... Good to know... Thanks...

That board is one hard, dense, stiff piece of maple. It worked like iron with hand tools and had a measured modulus of elasticity that was a good 30+% higher than the MOE numbers I have found in the databases in the software I use. I bought it at Home Depot, so who knows where it came from but it is one tough piece of lumber.

Got her cleaned up and ready to tiller, but I can't tiller her till I get my victim's info...
No pin knots showed up on this one:)

Sign-up is officially closed. I will start working assignments tonight when I get home from work. I know I gave myself quite a long time to get this part done but hopefully it won't be needed and we can get a few extra days to build.
-
I may as well start 2 or 3 because I'll change it before I get one done.....
-
I might start another just for fun.
Might give flat sawn belly lams a shot, wouldn't be any different than a selfbow from a stave.
-
Sorry that I was not able to join this year, but wish you all the best of luck. I will enjoy watching though. Bue.

Victim names are going out, check your PM's.

Received mine.

I have been sitting on these for a while never really knowing which way to go on them. Now I have some direction.
I need to figure out the riser but leaning towards spalted maple with an I beam of alternating bocote and spalted maple, or maybe curly maple.
-
Those are some good looking veneers. Going to be a looker no matter which way you go with it.
-
I have been sitting on these for a while never really know which way to go on them.
Bet they smell funky:)

Oh I forgot your wormy riser picher...

I scrapped that idea but my camera batteries are in the sock drawer .

kenny, thats a blast from the past.
i will never forget a pic he finally posted of a bow where we could all see his toenails painted different colours. :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
-
LOL I remember that picture.
What was his name I forget?
Hova maybe?

Can't do nufin until kennym sends me my veneers
-
Ifin ya got my name, I'll take that last Osage backed wif snake skins please:)
-
Ice from the sky NO :saywhat:
-
They are shipped Mark, outta my hands now.
Had a new one, I have some sassafrass, was gonna use for core cause it's light weight. Made lams, scarfed the ends, and CA won't stick it together. WTH , seems like really dry wood and is for sure kiln dried .
-
From a guy that does a lot of lam splices told me to use Elmers wood Max. suppose to hold the end grain. Kinda weird why the SG wont hold it tho.
Hehe got me a victim today :bigsmyl:
-
Yep it was a first and I’ve scarfed a lot of lams . I made some aboo late today and will scarf and glue In morn . Have one more glue session on riser and will glue bow Friday
Wife wants a hat rack in laundry room so it will be sassafras or black locust ... :biglaugh:
-
Think I'll build a longbow out of one of these. My last longbow was kind of a dog, gonna change up a thing or two and try to improve it.

What color?:)
I don't think the color choice was too bad for a straight white guy...
Only took me three days of pulling hair out of my head, lots of staring and going back to home depot three times for color samples to decide on what colors to use and I still was not confident in my choices...
-
That’s gonna be sharp Kenny!
Shredd, I just got done with a remodel project. I feel your pain on the decision making!
-
Nice Kenny.
Cool job Shredd.
-
Bocote and Osage always look good together
-
Thanks Guys... Will probably start building bows in a week or two... Time to take a break from all this work around here... I still have about two month's (at my pace) of work that needs to be done... Then I can sit pretty for at least the next 10 to 15 yrs... Unless a hurricane comes and ruins my party...

So what do you guys think of this? Thought of going outside the box and making a whole new bow design. I picked this oldie up at a antique store a while back and thought of 'reproducing' it. New form everything. Any thoughts? [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

That's an interesting design. Can we get a picture of it strung? Either way would be a cool thing to build and shoot in my opinion.

Go for Tim.

It's a Ben Pearson cougar. 64".

I almost bought a Pearson Cougar at a farm sale. Looked to be in good shape and the farmer bought it new , but talked to a guy who wanted it for his boy, so I let him buy it for $2.50 ...

I didn’t get a lot of time in on it. But I got a start on a black locust sapling. I got a back ring chased on the last ring of sapwood and the profile drawn out. But then I ran out of time to get much further. There’s a few knots, but a little thin CA should be enough to hold those in place well. I’m going for a longish narrow bendy handle with this one. Well see how it turns out, if I’m not happy with it, there’s plenty more staves where this one came from.
Kyle
-
Should not be a problem for you  :jumper:
-
Looks nice, Kyle.
-
I like it coon. Hope you got my address correct
-
Kyle, if it's even close to the one I got from you a couple years ago, it's a shoe in for a winner.
-
I’m struggling so far. I’m trying to come up with the best idea possible and commit. My options are limited to Osage, which I know my victim will be ok with, but I really want to make something special.
Probably just a little - outta practice jitters.

It warmed up a bit yesterday and progress was made on the form. Thought I had enough plywood around to finish the glue and screw at least but didn't quite make it.
Had to quit early to help the wife prepare lasagna dinner for 13 for a daughter's birthday. A good time was had.
It might be windy today but hopefully it will be at least glued and screwed.

Good start Mike.

Good on Yah... I love me some lasagna too...
-
Well I was tillering the bow today, it's asymmetrical, my first attempt at one, top limb 1.5 inches longer than the bottom limb..
I always made my bows symmetrical.
I've seen some BBO bows done asymmetrical and did not like the braced tiller profile on a few, the bottom limb would be almost 1/4 moon shape and the top limb is darn near flat.
Braced look doesn't really matter, it's the full draw look we are concerned about. BUT I don't like that braced look.
That's how this one was when I got it braced to 6.5 inches and I hate that look.
So I cut 1.5 inches off the top limb and glued the tip overlay back on...
But it was fun in the shop today, tad on the warm side too:)
So time will tell if it works out now or I make another one...
Below is profile I don't like.
-
As usual I’m rethinking my victims likes... not sure if Osage is the answer ...

All shapes out and roughly floor tillered. Still a bit heavy to bring to brace but the bend looks decent enough. I plan on tweaking it as I drop the weight a bit more.

Made a new set of jigs for my risers. I have freehanded a couple of test bows with this design, but making a jig never worked. Used a tip from Mark (MadMax) he posted on the tip thread, filling the gaps with EA40. Worked extremely well. Perfect match without any touch ups.

Rody thanks for turning pics for us ns
OMG that’s mushy never mind !
-
No problem Kennedy
:wavey:

I’m finding a lot of my Osage is checked and split quite a bit. I made a real nice bow shaped piece of firewood yesterday. I found a horizontal split going right through the belly that didn’t reveal itself completely til after I did a good bit of work.
Onto plan b.
Pretty long piece with some snake on one limb. The knot will be just above the centerline. I’ve got it floor tillered so far
-

-
Ok ima gonna go with the Osage and Bocote scraps glue up in morn ...

About the third year is where I like it best...

Nice Kenny

I’m tryin three things different on this one , brute for punishment I reckon
Prob be 10 lb or a hundred

Darn I got a Kenny bow last year. That looks good.

Always counts with a High ball glass
-
Looks good Travis, nice tiller.
-
Here is the braced profile which I don't care for when the top limb is 1.5 inches longer due to making the bow asymmetrical..
And this bow is limb timed, the pull rope is tracking the line on the wall.
It makes sense though with a longer top limb.
I never get this look when making a symmetrical bow.
Symmetrical bow below.
-
:nono:
-
In the first picture the left limb tip seem to be much closer to the wall than the other. That would give an exaggerated looking bend in the picture, just a thought. Or did you forget to scrape the right side. ;)
-
Put yer specs on Bue:)
Tips are an equal distance from the wall.
It looks in person exactly like it looks there.
Also my air cleaner unit in the top left corner of the ceiling casts a shadow over the left side of the wall/bow there and causes a different look.

It's a little chilly today here in FL. for pressure washing... I guess I'll go out to the shop, clean and organize it and start pondering how I am gonna victimize my victim...
-
A little chilly here in NY too. 10" of snow last night with more on the way.
-
I thought about it while workin on other stuff, does that count as progress? :biglaugh:
-
Some good progress already. I guess I should go look at what chunks of wood I have that can be set aside for my victim. I can't do too much until I get through concealment inspections on the wife's project...
-
After much re re recalculation , I’m gonna glue it up .
Heck it’s just scraps anyway , except the glass and tape
-
Kenny, looks to me like you could make a bundle selling scraps.
-
I’ve had guys go thru my scrap barrel ... :biglaugh:
-
I may have to do that, my scraps are pretty much bottom of the barrel right now. It's nice living relatively close to you.

Looks like ya otta clean up that work bench too ole timer..
:wavey:

Well for right now I aint doing nothing. I got a abcessed tooth and seeing a surgeon Thursday. Ibeprofen is my friend.
Prolly gonna die some maple black for the riser and have some brown glass. Black brown and pink all goes good together :bigsmyl:

I'm working on a bench with a flip table on a timer so it empties at 5 each evening...

You Guys, Too Funny... Stic chew on a clove or two for that tooth... Might help...
Or some betel nuts! :)
Frustrating day working on the form.
Frickin router got out of hand. Well mostly operator error :banghead: I'll bring it together with some bondo. Was so disgusted i swept up and called it a day.
My router is a piece of do do. It’s a 1/4" and doesn’t have the reach needed for a 1 3/4" form. I make do by raising the bit out of the chuck but that really doesn't cut it (see that pun there? :) )
I think 2021 is going to be a tool upgrade year. :)
Pitchers tomorrow.
-
I bought a new D-walt 1/2"shank for the same reason.
One pass gets it now
A 1/4" flush trim bit does not cut flush because they make them for laminates, It's close, but not flush :)
Makes a small ridge on the form second pass
-
I wish I had gotten a Dewalt, I got a good sized Milwaukee 1/2" and I can power it out with a 1/2 x 2 pattern bit...
-
Will be cutting out bamboo this weekend. Waiting for some walnut to show up for the glue up. Next week I will be in California so no work done next week.

Ah ya adjust weight with different length bow strings..
-
The process has begun... I picked out a few pieces of Sheoak, vintage 4/2017... Put the finishing touch in the kiln last summer... Looking fo a nice grain pattern...
Picking out the right piece, where to cut it, truing up the sides, planing down, sanding down to size, looking at all the wasted wood, time consuming just to get a square piece of wood... This by far is not my favorite part of bow building... But it has to be done...
-
Looks neat, Rich.

I got some BAD streaky glass today, can't say where I got it.

Should we ship UPS instead of USPS?
-
To your victim? You can ship however you please as far as I'm concerned, or am I missing something here?
-
My swap bow is getting close but still have a ways to go.
After cutting 1.5" off the top limb, I then had to change the arrow shelf position.
Threw a curve ball at me but I got her looking decent.
It's going to come in right about 55 pounds, so I'm pretty good with the weight.
-
I now got 6 nice pieces of wood to choose from... The one with the most pronounced grain has a bunch of small knots along the edge and I don't see how I can strategically incorporate them knots... Another piece with nice grain has a knot right where a fade would be... Bad news... So that actually makes 4 to choose from... :dunno: :)
Looks Good Royster...

That be Mr Royster ...

Should we ship UPS instead of USPS?
If you don’t mind, I would prefer if you ship to me using USPS. I hate ups. They always add extra bs charges.
Dave.

Duly noted Dave. Let me know if there is any specific way we should be handling your shipping when the time comes.
-
Looking good Roy.
-
Sorry. I don’t mean to sound like a jerk. I order a lot from the US and I find that USPS has the best service. ( I hope that I didn’t jinx myself ) 🙂
The couriers always add extra charges that the mail never does.
On another note, I spent some time going through my bow wood. I have cherry, maple, walnut, hickory, jatoba, padauk and purple heart for core lams as well as bamboo for at least three bows. Lets hope I get it right the first time.
I’m leaning towards a cherry core. My sweetest shooter has a cherry core.
Dave.

Nice job roy :bigsmyl:

Roy I would like to see the fade area after the fades are shaped.
I like it
-
You will...

USPS has been slow during the Covid, Not reliable in the Lower 48.
Holy crap! I was unaware this was happening as things have been arriving here without issue. Is anyone else having problems?
-
I've had zero problems with usps, ups or fed x the past year.
-
I heard USPS is run by a new guy that is trying to cut corners, I guess to save money... I would like to ship my bow through Amazon... They seem to have their chit together...
-
Yes, USPS is backed up , covid probs is what I'm told. NY mail going thru KC as the NY has so many workers out with covid. But Max package is where? If you don't get any answer , let me know , I'll send more with somebody else.
-
I understand that the mail is moving more slowly than before, it is what it is.
My issue is that I’m across the border. It never fails if something is sent by courier, they find every excuse to add extra charges.
Example: last summer I ordered a starter switch from Grizzly and, being in a rush, I forgot to ask them to mail it. It came by ups. Months later, I got a bill from ups. I called and asked what I was being billed for and was told that it was a brokerage fee. I asked why the fee was two thirds the value of what I ordered. The person on the phone went quiet for a bit and then he said “ oh I see that the seller has already paid half the fee. You only have to pay us the other half.” BS!
That was just one example. With the mail, most often there are no other charges.
You might say that they need brokers to get things across the border. The mail manages without.
Dave.

I didn’t mean to drag this thread down. I’m a grumpy old coot.

We would hate to unknowingly ship you a bill.

Same here. I recently sent some game calls to friends of mine that live in the US. I made sure that I marked them as gifts, which they were, so they wouldn’t be given extra charges.
On occasion, I have ordered items from sellers in the US and they marked them as samples.
Dave.

Floor tillered and ready for a heat treat and alignment. The tips are about 1” off center. So it won’t take much movement. I’m hoping this one holds up. It’s gonna feel super light if it does. I’m betting less than 1 pound with the string and handle wrap all finished out.
I’m excited to see how some of these bows are gonna finish out with all the woods and combinations everyone is playing with!

ohWould you rather see a burl or really nice Walnut incorporated into a bow?burl is on left Walnut on right.
-
My vote would be for burl.
Dave.
-
Well, I warmed up my shop to just above freezing ( the best my heater can do) and I got a couple of risers sanded. Then I cut up some cherry and osage for core lams. Then things started going south. While trying to get my jointer into position to plane the cherry, a piece of wood fell and bonked me on the back of my head. Then, shortly after, I re-sawed the cherry into a pair of lams and I messed up one of the osage pieces by cutting it on the wrong side. At that point I decided to call it a day.
Dave.
-
Those are both sharp Dan, I like the burl a little more though.
Dave I have days like that too.

Mark that is sharp as heck.
LOL on skeaterbaits horny hat:)
I had to start another bow today.
Made the first one asymmetrical and didn't like how it was working out, so I cut 1.5" off the top limb and moved the arrow shelf.
Had to remove a lot of wood getting it back in sync and dropped below my victim's draw weight.
This bow will be symmetrical like all the other bows I've made.
Gonna be Osage belly, tapered Osage core lam, backed wif boo.
Ya all have any idea how fast a Grizzly 1.5hp 80 inch edge sander with 60 grit paper will rip the end of your thumb nail off?
Pretty damn fast, LOL......

Probably about as fast as my rigid belt sander with a 36 grit belt on. Don’t ask.
Dave.

That’s looking great Mark!
I got the longstring on mine. I thought I had the floor tillered closeish, nope. Pulled to weight on the longstring and it only made it to 8”, if that. That’s what o get for liking heavy bows I guess. This is first flex with a string. I may get a rasping or two in before I call it quits for the night
Kyle
-
Well it’s at a low brace of 3.5” and is pulling weight at about 16”. Now to rasp once more and super glue the knots for a little peace of mind. Then I’ll up to full brace from there. I need to do a little alignment to get things where I want them, but it’s not too bad. I should be able to get to where I normally do a second heat treat without any issues.
Kyle

Kenny the only limb failure I have had was from doing that with C-clamps . It made a dry joint.

Only problem I have is the cold. It takes quite a bit for my little heater to warm up the shop to where I can get some work done.
That said, I’m now on a four day weekend, so I’ll try and get a bow glued up.
Dave.

Trying to keep in Chris’s good graces, but posting progress once a week when you ain’t doing nuthin is depressing. I had one of these DoAll band saw with 36"deep cut, it can use all 3 (edit wheels) rollers or just 2 rollers for a 20" cut, I always used the long blade around all 3 rollers and did not know where the blade guard (---->) was. I cut my jacket above my elbow with a short wood blade. I had been use this band saw and others for 28 years when this happened :knothead: No blood
I use to weld my blades too.
I had band saw blade 100' long.
You cut, grind, butt weld, and clean up the weld with this machine

Do-All's are the heat. We've had one at each of the six shops I've been to. Great for detailed sheet metal cutting.
Dave, since I know you have stuff going on on a quick howdy or comment on something works for checking in. The main intention there is to keep people engaged so it isn't forgotten until April.

I spent some time in the shop this afternoon working on some options for my swap bow. What do you all think of these?
The top one is hard maple with some interesting greenish streaking in it. It’s actually pallet wood, but it’s sound. I thought it looks cool. The small piece below it is cherry for a potential footing. I was thinking of a cherry core lam for it.
The middle one is osage with a walnut footing. I have osage and hickory core lams that can go with it.
The bottom one is a simple osage riser, no embellishments.
I also have some other woods if these don’t do anything for you. 😊
Dave.
-
All three look good. kinda depends on what the limbs will look like. Veneers? colored glass?
-
Bamboo back and belly. Hardwood core.
Dave.
-
I like the top one.
-
All good middle a bit better.
-
I vote for the middle one too
-
I gotta go for the top one. As much as I love some accent wood, natural wood (God's way) always appeals to me more.

-
Going to try to glue up a BBO today. I’ve got to finish putting a hot box together first. The last time I made one, I was using urac and didn’t need as much heat. I’m going to use ea40 on this one, so I’m going to try to get it close to 150*, if I can.
The other bow I’ve been working on is pretty much tillered out to full draw, I’m just not all that happy with it. So I’m going to give myself at least another option or two.
-
I like the maple handle.
-
Caleb
NO NO NO..... STOP
You don't need 150 degrees for a BBO bow, on top of that 150 degrees will dry the crap out of the boo and Osage and probably crack the boo .
80 degrees is plenty hot enough to dry the EA40...
EA40 will dry in 24 hours at room temp of 70 degrees.
-

Looks good. What woods?
Dave.
-
Looks nice, Vince.
Put 3 hours in the shop this morning, all cleaned up and ready for string grooves.
No pictures, was busy.... ok I forgot...
24 degrees outside and 72 inside, perfect, except the concrete driveway was solid ice.
-
Another piece of the puzzle... Light Mottled Sheoak, Wenge and Paduak... Can't see the grain in the pic but should have some beautiful chatoyance when finished...
86* here... Sweating my a$$ off... Supposed to be 70's to low 80's all week... Drop down to 60* Saturday...

Nice! I like the canine and the wood combo.
I got some core lams and bamboo planed and tapered and cut out another maple riser so I can do one plain and one with a footing. I have enough bits ready to glue up my first one tomorrow. 😁
Dave.

Thanks for that Rich! It's minus 2 for the high here.

What Roy no pichers Did not happen :bigsmyl:

Thanks for that Rich! It's minus 2 for the high here.
My heart goes out to you guys... I am spoiled... But you all don't have to live in 90* heat 5 month's of the year...
I don't have the best accommodations but any of you all are welcome to come visit to escape the winter blues... Except for Roy... I heard that guy will drink all your beer...
-
LOL, haint had a beer in 3 weeks
-
You must be damn thirsty...
You know I'm kidding Roy... You are welcome also... I'll just hide my beer...
-
Yeah I think I like some cold weather along with the warm .
-
16* at lunch down to 5* tonight, this is 2" of sleet, we were suppose to get 10" snow today but missed us.
Had to dig the door out on the barn so I didn't get locked in the bow shop
(https://i.imgur.com/2V8W8tE.jpg)
I got the riser back pattern sanded
The upper part of the maple is not curly up high

Yea it just snowed about 1" on top of the sleet, back to the bow room

I got my first potential swap bow glued up and I glued up a footed riser as well. Maple and cherry with wenge accents.
Pictures tomorrow after I take them out of the clamps.

The Mrs. sent me a pic from her car this morning showing -17. With no heat in the shop I may have to replace all my adhesives.
-
Lonnie that sucks.
We are lucky here, it's 32 degrees, but we have freezing rain now on top of the foot of snow we have.
Hope the power stays on but we have a generator that runs all we need for the house.
Shreddy boy, I don't wanna hear about how warm it is down there:)
-
7*
-
Just cold(30s) and rainy here. I feel for you guys.
-
Skeets... I got a small 16" x 16" insulated box with a 15 or 20 watt bulb to keep my ea40 warm when it gets below 70 to make it easier to spread... You might want one just to keep your stuff from freezing... If you got a lot of stuff you wanna keep warm, an old fridge with a light bulb in it should work good...
-
Dang, I never thought about that. I have perfectly good bow oven that would do just that.
Sounds like a good one for the tips and tricks thread.
-
Make an insulated partition and section off your oven so you are not wasting energy heating up the whole thing...
Skeets... Throw it in the tips and tricks thread... Tell them Shredd sent yah...
-
Some good progress going on it looks like.
Me? Well, I stared at that scrap I was contemplating making lams out of and decided I should order some new bandsaw blades. I tweaked the last good one helping my daughter rough out a stave and now it leaves a bit of gouge every pass around. Suppose now I have a few days before I need to go stare some more.

What edge sander do you have there Canopyboy?
-
Max, can you explain how that top form works? Is it both for DR and straight limbed bows?
-
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Well, here’s one out of the clamps. The glue lines look ok for the most part. I’ll know better after it’s trimmed. Beside it is the footed maple riser.
And we had 8” of snow last night and more on the way.
Dave.
-
Bue It's a recurve form, I can make different riser shapes by adding pieces to the form, back and belly, look in the picture the 1/4" piece under the riser with all the kerf cuts in it, and I can add 1/8" on top of that, the pieces on the top form just close the gap down to the fire hose. The riser on the form is the smallest back to belly I have made and may look like a long bow riser.
The second one from the bottom looks like a Fred bear bow.

What edge sander do you have there Canopyboy?
It's a canopyspecial...
I didn't like what I could get commercially. I wanted a longer platten without getting a bigger sander, so I cogitated on it for awhile in meetings where I couldn't pay attention anyhow and came up with that thing. Works well enough...
-
-
Ya did well David..
-
Thanks Max, I understand now.
-
Bue  ;)
-
I made a bit more progress today. It’s about 2” shy of full draw. A little sanding and shooting in should get it right on. Well counting on it holding up through the shoot in process. It’s taken about 1/4” set with about 1/2” right after unbracing. I’m kinda surprised it’s held up with so little set and no chrysalling this far. And I like the mass.
Kyle
-
Just curious, it looks flat through this section.
-
It is a little flatter there than I intended. I was hoping to leave that stiff until the last three inches of draw. And just sand the center into draw weight. The stave is 60” between the nocks for a 27” draw. I like to leave the center a bit stiff when I make a bendy handle longer than a 2x draw weight ratio. I do appreciate all critiques of the tiller.

You must become one with your bow🧘♂️.And yes I was glued to it, starbond is a wonderful superglue. Deer antler felt like a fitting overlay material on this one. Though I rarely use it.
Kyle

-
I like that riser Kenny!
-
Thanks guys , it’s kinda busy tho...

x2

The antler was definitely the way to go. I think it goes well with the two tones black locust. This is with one coat of truoil.
Kyle
-
Very nice Kyle! I like it!
-
I’m building a plain and clean bow this year. Hopefully!
-
Nice Kyle

Looks great Kyle.

With the snow, ice, and cold temps here, I haven't worked on the swap bow in a week.
I have a new tool coming soon, a miniature miter saw, has a 3 inch blade with 100 tpi.
Be perfect for cutting the limb tip horn overlays angle off the bow and the overlay itself off the slab of buffalo horn.
Little hairy holding a 64 inch bow with one hand while trying to make an even tip overlay cut with the bandsaw.
-
New tools are always good.
Have not been in my shop for awhile either. Takes too long to get the heat up there.More snow last nite on top of about 7-8 we already had.
Oh but suppose to be 50 and rain Sunday :bigsmyl:

Now ole Kenny gonna be streaking again:)

I have him PM you the pichers
-
Sorry dudes, it ain't gonna make 40* this weekend... :biglaugh:
-
Roy, can you post a picture of that little saw when you get it? Sounds interesting.
My first bow came out heavy. I’ll see if I can drop enough weight, but I’m getting ready to glue up another one anyway.
I lucked out at work today. I was looking at a bunch of pallet wood that’s leaning up against the wall behind my cut off saw and one nasty looking piece caught my eye. It was all black and moldy, so I cut off a piece throw it into the firewood box. I looked at the end and I thought that’s interesting , so I shaved off a bit with the saw and sure enough it’s spalted. :goldtooth:
I brought it home. There’s enough for at least one riser and a few game calls.
Later, I was carrying out some firewood for one of the ladies I work with and she had some of those square foam mats that kids play on in her car. She said that she was going to throw them out. They were barely used so I said that I could use them either on the shop floor or to line the bottom of my hunting kayak.
Dave.
-
Sent ya a PM Dave
-
I checked my fire hose for leaks, feathered out the fades on the riser today, brushed off all the lams and glued it up.

Got some work done today. Will be gluing up next week if weather warms up. Bloodwood belly, Walnut inner lamination and Bamboo back. Handle will be walnut
-
Don't know why my attachments keep doubling up. :knothead: :knothead:
-
Looking good!
-
 looking good
-
Rainman?????
Don't know why my attachments keep doubling up.
How are you inserting them?
Just with the trad gang attachment feature?
I fixed them already.
-
Don't know much about that style bow but that sounds like a looker... Looking forward to seeing it...
-
That bloodwood will look good next to the walnut.
I spent a couple of hours sanding my second riser and tapering the cherry core and bamboo lams. The back lam was really thick. I had already planed it to a tapered profile and it was still more than a quarter inch thick. I got it a bit more than halfway to where I want it and left it till tomorrow. My hands get sore after pressing hard against the sander. The belly lam is thinner and I sanded it most of the way and burnt it black. I’m hoping to glue this one up tomorrow.
I’m going to glue up at least one more blank and then I’ll finish the best one.
Dave.
-
Thank you Roy.

Very nice Mad Max! The profile looks similar to the one piece recurve I build.
I'm working on a bow for my states bowhunter convention currently. I'm gonna get started on my swap bow after I get it finished up.
-
Looking forward to it 4point
-
Roy I am just using the Tradgang.com attachment feature.
-
Mad Max hope you send a stringer with that recurve. LOL
-
Ok were you trying to post like 4 pictures and duplicated some?
After you select a picture, there will be a computer picture number listed there in the box for the picture you just selected.
Then as you select more pictures, they will have a different computer number in the other boxes.
Sounds like you are selecting the same picture twice.
That number 20210219_133134(1).jpg is what my computer calls that picture.
-
Mad Max hope you send a string with that recurve. LOL
2 strings

Spent more time so far fixing it than total time up to the "incident".

I pulled my second bow out of the clamps yesterday and I’m not too happy with it.
The glue lines aren’t the best and I think the riser looks odd.
I’ll be gluing up another one this weekend and I’ll start tillering the first one as well.

Nice Mike and Kyle.

Looking good everybody.
I have been helping a friend the past few weeks finish several bows he started many years back. The new jigs are dialed in, waiting on some glass and accents coming from Kenny before starting my trade bow.

Lonnie, simple is better a lot of the time. Mine is gonna be simple this year too.

Busy watching grand children this week. So I made a new toothing plane.

Very nice Dan.

I’ve made a little progress on my trade. Hit a few road blocks on the way, but it’s tillered out to 20”. I’ll try to get more done this weekend and get some pics if possible. Work’s already starting to get busier

-
Very nice Kenny, that's a great combo!
Sorry in advanced to my victim! I don't make many longbows and there's a reason for that. They are either dogs or they feel like your drawing a board. Might be starting over anyway if I can't get the poundage down.
-
Thanks guys!
Travis I'm sure whoever gets a bow from ya won't mind a recurve!! Your work is immaculate!
My trade is .17 # over requested weight...
-
Purdy nice, Kenndy.
Travis anyone would love to have one of your beautiful bows...
-
Getting close here.
Got the stain on her today.
Start with the Tung oil tomorrow, 1 coat a day for about 4 to 5 coats, has to dry 24 hours between coats.
-
Nice bows guys. I didn’t get anything done today. I’m on a two week course of medication that’s making me feel crappy.
I have another set of core lams that need tapering and bamboo to plane and sand before I can glue up another bow.
Dave.
-
Roy you got my bow looking purity good. :biglaugh:
-
LOL Mike, better luck next year...
-
Well after some more shooting my first bow started ticking at the nocks, essentially all of them over the course of the afternoon and picked up some frets between the knots on the upper limb. So onto plan be. A nice clean black locust stave
Kyle
-
I feel your pain Kyle. My bow has been just about nothing but trouble. I had some issues with the tips. Top nock ended up splitting off so I had to shorten it. There’s a little too much reflex, so it was a bear to get braced.
Once I got it to brace, I was making decent progress until the handle split on me today. Just a flat split across, but now the handle area is too thin. I was going for a bend thru the handle design, but now I’m not sure if I’ll be able to keep a patched piece from popping off.
-
Looking good roy
Bummer Kyle and caleb, BUT, we get to see you guy's build another nice bow
-
Well a Sunday afternoon nap and a glass of whiskey made things go better. Messed with the limbs and shaped the riser. Seems to have smoothed up the draw and I got it down to two pounds over my victims range. Should be able to drop five more pounds fairly easy.

Sorry to hear the sapling didn't work out Kyle, I really liked the knotty look.
Rody, looking good as always.
4 point, I think you sell yourself short. That bow looks to be as sweet as all your others.
-
Travis, that bow looks awesome! I really like that riser
-
I worked on bows all weekend. My victims bow is in the press for a dry fit.
-
Thanks guys. I can get them looking okay, just can't get the performance out of them I'm looking for. I used less taper in this one. .001 less taper gained me about 15 pounds. I didn't see that happening. I have a little more pre load now so hopefully the speed will come up. When I first drew it I thought it stacked bad.
-
Awesome Travis...
I love that riser wood color combination.
-
Travis, do you use tip wedges?
-
I did use tip wedges as well as a power lam I guess you’d call it that I built into the riser accents. It’s a narrow bow so there’s very little profile taper. I used a .002 taper in this one.
-
Last underlays for the belly.

  Mike
Put a coat of Tung oil on her today, wow that made her pop....
At least 3 more coats to go..
Gotta make a string yet and get a pvc pipe for shipping, I've had 2 bows broken so far shipping in just cardboard boxes.
Then I put the pvc inside a cardboard box cause the folks at the post off don't like those round tubes rolling off the conveyer belt.
-
Shipped a bow...
My early apology to the poor victim...
It is .17 lbs over requested weight... :archer2:
-
Good job big dog....
Is it coming here?
:wavey:
-
LOL, the way the mail is , it could go about anywhere...
-
Well I was hoping you could do better than .17lb tolerance.
But if it shows up here, I guess I'll haft keep it:)
-
A few days late on this, my apologies.
One Month Update
Material Acquisition Stage - 2 of 18
Build Stage - 14 of 18
Shipped - 1 of 18
Overall, we are doing great! 78% of us are in various stages of physically building our bows, one shipped and one getting finishing touches. With three months left in the standard build period, we may be on track to have everyone shipped before the grace period begins. Outstanding work everyone.
Edit: Clarity
-
Welllllll... I got to work on my bow today... Thought I'd have the riser cut, all the sides sanded and pick out lams and glass for tomorrow's next process... Ends up that I have to still sand the ramps cause the sun went down... Bunch of stuff got in the way today... Hopefully tomorrow will run more smooth...

I finally got a start on the victim. Pick two colors for accent stripes. I think the block will be more blackish with finish on it. The plan is carmel glass on the limbs but that could change.

Pink....

Against a dark background, I’d say the pink or the yellow would look good.

I had an hour this afternoon and made a little progress and got attempt 2 roughed out. I already had a ring chased from the other night. I still need to clean up the lines and round the corners of the back with the rasp before the tillering starts. But I’m content at the moment.

What kind of stave kyle?

I'm hoping after shaping the curly maple will show itself off.
I may even use some stain.

Yeah Maxie... Looking good....
I am making great progress... I sanded the ramps and fades today... Spent the rest of the day cleaning the fins on a AC unit...
-
Mark and Kyle looking good.
Stain makes curly pop.
Shreddy boy didn't happen wifout pichers...
-
I’m liking how that’s looking Mark!
It’s another blacklocust stave. This one is much cleaner, and rings every time I would chop at it with the hatchet, so it should be good and stiff.

Received some riser material yesterday. Thinking I would like to do a simple two species I-beam riser with a couple of these. Thoughts?

Zircote and zebra would be my pick.
-
Sorry, I should have labeled those. In the second picture from left to right: Grenadillo, Bocote, Padauk, Zebra, and Bubinga. The Bocote would still pair nicely with the Zebra though.
-
Nice
any combo with contrasting colors
-
Hold that Bocote on the belt sander and see if it will lighten up.
-
Looked darker in the pic. That will look good with zebra too.
-
I like them all.😁
Not much help, am I? 🤔
Dave.

These two.

Got a sealer coat on my victims bow and my finish showed up today so I should be able to finish it up this weekend. Shot it a little and it still seems slow. I'll see what it's new owner gives me for feed back.

When you say slow, what are you comparing too?
-
Comparing it to my recurves it seems like a dog.
-
Is this longbow of comparable draw weight to your recurve?
-
Roy, it’s actually higher poundage than I usually shoot by a bit.
-
No sweat man. Unless you do some radical limb designs those longbows won't perform with a recurve. The ones I build kinda look like yours and they are really sweet to shoot. If you want a longbow to shoot with a recurve you have to put se serious limb design and curves in it and for me that's not really a longbow lol but to each their own. I like shooting bows regardless of what the populace calls them
-

You tryin to con him into tellin who it's for by it's weight? You crafty booger! :biglaugh:
-
I checked that out before I posted Kenny and it didn’t look like I was gonna give anything away, I’ve seen you have to watch ol Roy.
I like the strung profile of the bow I built and it seems smooth to my draw length so I’m not gonna mess with it anymore
-
You sneaky buggers....
That's ok, I have been messing with the details on the glass recurve I'm building for the swap too.
The BBO pictures is ole Roy's new bow...
So there take dat:)

Okay got quite a bit done on the victim today :bigsmyl: Went ahead and put black and two yellows for accents. This maple gonna be more gray than black.

Ah hey, Bue....
Ah never mind:)
-
Mike, If you flip the limb on the right over you might pick up a couple FPS!
-
I do not have any pictures of the progress I did NOT do today :bigsmyl:
-
I got a little bit done tonight. Lines cleaned up, lightly scraped the back clean, floor tillered to getting a decent flex before I did a little bending and heat treat. I’m always a fan of the color black locust gives when you get a good heat treat.
Kyle

How long do you jump start them?

The old battery charger heat strip trick
-
Glued up the blank yesterday will take it out of box today and get handle glued on this week. Should be able to get it tillered this week if everything goes well.
-
Lotsa progress!!
-
Getting some limbs worked up ,,
Are the heat strips amenable to DIY?
-
I spent some time in the shop today, but I didn’t last too long. I had to work with the door open because my planer and sander can only be used with the door up.
I got a few core lams ready and I started on some bamboo. I was going to start flattening the boo, but I decided it might not be the best idea with cold hands.
It’s supposed to start warming up tomorrow, thankfully.
I’m starting a new bow because the last one came out of the clamps a mess. Crappy glue lines and both limbs twisted. 🤬
Dave.
-
Got the final coat of finish on mine today. Need to make string yet. Hopefully I can get it sent to a new home next week sometime.
-
I’ll be waitin Travis! :goldtooth:

Kenny, it's headed south then east then back north then west I'm guessing with the way shipping is.

You are all way ahead of me. Just got the steel pins into the topless trade bow form. I used 3/8 rod instead of oak this time. These are handling 60# no problem. Also a chance to do a pressure check on the hose.

I saw my first robin a week ago, but we’re still getting that Alaska air.
Dave.

Butter cups are blooming is Miss-sipeeeee
-
Was 23 degrees here yesterday morning, going to be in the 60's next couple days.
Yee Haw....
My new belt/disc sander is to be delivered today, feel like a kid at Xmas.
Will make shaping risers so much easier than using the edge sander.
Could save some finger nails and skin on the hands too.
-
You been nocking out stuff in the bow shop lately  :bigsmyl:
-
-
Well, it appears I am really going to have to work for this bow to happen. First it was no heat in the shop, frozen EA40, no riser wood. The weather is better, got my adhesive and riser wood.
Now the conveyer motor burned up on the drum sander so I can't make lams, so it will be another visit to Kenny soon.
Let's hope I get past this hurdle quickly and it's the last.
-
Sounds like my kind of day, Lonnie:)

For the topless form users: Do you air your hose up at all before tying it down? I have been tying mine down while it's completely deflated but it looks... wrong. Ends up curving over the edges of the bow.

I try never to go topless, nobody needs to see that. But as far as a bow form, even though I am not topless there either, I would think a bit of air would be the thing to do.
-
Congrats Roy. I can hear the robin near your shop in the video.

Made some progress this weekend. Trying not to get my hopes up too much. I had gotten a split in the handle, so I had to flatten it out to patch a piece in. It’s only about 56-57” overall length, so I was going for a bit of a bendy handle design. I’m not sure if the new handle will hold up for sure yet or not. I shot it about 15 times
Unbraced,braced,16”,and 26” draw pics.
-
Everyone’s work is looking great so far! Congrats Roy on the nice Kenny bow. And someone is going to be lucky to get a Roy BBO

A guy that works with me turns pens. Friday I took him my offcut box that was full of riser blank ends and other trimmings. Today he comes in and brings me this piece, says it's a thank you. I told him it was too much but he wasn't having it. Anyway, I now have another option for the riser combo. Thoughts anyone?

Yes it is Walnut, my apologies.
-
My edge sander motor is in the shop. It may be done this week. If that's the case I'll be able to get started on my riser soon. I'm building a T/D recurve. The limbs are almost finished
-
Cool what did they say it needed?
-
Evil
how thick is that walnut?
-
Roy
Guessing its the switch or capacitor. The wiring all checked good so putting another capacitor on it and if that's not it he said it's probably the switch. Can't wait to get it back running. Off all my bow building power tools I use that on the most. Just hogs off the fiberglass plus it doubles as a good knife grinder

That's sweet Mark!! I'm glad Rody has his so he don't get it!!

-
Max, Roy, & Kenny,
Those are some fine looking bows!
It looks like I’m bring up the tail end. I was sidelined with surgery last week and am not allowed in the shop for another 2-4 weeks. Before being sidelined I did manage to build two test risers for my victim, either of them will work. However, I’m going to try a couple of other wood combinations that should be have a little more eye appeal.
-
Thanks Walt
Hope you heal up quickly, there's plenty of time for you to make a bow. Don't rush the recovery period. Take care of yourself first of all.

I don't know about all of this over achieving stuff. Y'all hurt poor Walt just trying to keep up even though there are months and months still before the deadline.
I'm still thinking about starting.

Thanks Walt, hopefully it’s new owner likes it.
-
Rainman,
Sorry for your loss. Been there numerous times, it is one of the toughest things I have done.
-
Got it rough sanded... Came in 2# over the weight expected... I am happy with that since I fixed my sander (was not sanding accurate) and I tweaked my hyper lam to give me a stiffer tip area... I'll make my weight easily... The last three inches are not moving at all... She is 1/8" negative tiller, which you can probably see in the pics... The pics are at a low brace height since I don't have the tip blocks on yet...

-
There are some really nice bows being built this year. I decided that I had better up my game some, so I went over to my local wood supplier to see what I could find. I was thinking of a nice piece of zebra wood but to my surprise I was told that I need an appointment to go upstairs where all the big pieces of wood are. ☹️
On the main level there are big slabs, turning blanks and more expensive planed wood, but I still came away with a couple of gems.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The wide one is kingwood. 35” x8 1/2” and the other is canary wood. I already drew a riser on the canary wood. Pretty isn’t it? It has a lot of color in it and I’m wondering whether I should add any accents to it. I would appreciate any input.
If anyone has experience with canary wood, do I need an i-beam or is it strong enough on its own.
Dave.
-
Nice haul....
-
Nice bend on that bow.
I ain't seen no white sparks in awhile
-
Top one is Canary and African Blackwood, I like it
-
Wow! Very nice. I didn’t see any blackwood today. I would have bought some. It makes great accents and I want some for making trumpet calls.
Dave.
-
Nice looking stuff there Maxie...
Bue the bow is about 64 1/2" ntn, with a 19" riser... Takes a 62" string... The shape will change slightly when I start working on it and put the tip blocks on...
-
Mark those are beautiful bows.
-
Nice bend on that bow.
I ain't seen no white sparks in awhile
Thanks, Stic... That's because I neutralized it... I don't need it setting my form on fire while gluing it up... ;) :)
-
Well you ain't reading between the lines I see. :bigsmyl:
I got one limb glued today
-
Dave, I've always used it with another wood. I'm not sure if its strong enough as a stand alone riser wood. I always feel better about any riser if its laminated with some accents. Here's a couple I've used it in, not nearly as nice as the stuff you have there.

4point... Gorgeous lines on that top riser... Definitely my style...
-
Overlays are glued on and should have my swap bow shooting today.
-
Nice Bird
-
Very nice.
-
Birdbow, is that green glass?
-
I made a bit of progress. Got it pulling 4” shy of full draw and the tips narrowed to just over 3/8”. Not much set at this point. Mostly just some of the reflex from flipping the tips pulling out and settling in. Next step is to glue on overlays, recur nocks then finish tillering by balancing in tte hand with video. And sand in the last little bit. The bottom/left limb is definitely a bit strong but shouldn’t take much to balance and bring it in. Then it’s decorating time, probably gonna get a ball python shed.
Kyle
-
Yep 4 point, green glass is my favorite. Limbs are straight and I hit the weight I was shooting for.
-
Looking good!
-
Nice work Kyle
-
Kyle why do you leave the area outside the fades flat like that in your early tillering?
-
Okay I got these limbs cleaned up and drilled today. Riser drilled and string check. Looks good. I did put the tillering blocks on it and these limbs may be heavy. Will find out tomorrow. Have tip overlay material with epoxy now.

Kyle why do you leave the area outside the fades flat like that in your early tillering?
I think it's to keep from over stressing the fades.
I messed up a good many before I started doing the same thing
-
Looking good Mike..
-
It’s just a tillering shape I’ve had good luck with and get performance that makes me happy. I generally save making the first few inches out of the fades do much more than just wiggle until the last few Inches of draw length. They are moving like I have them, but not much. If you closely watch while working the limbs on the tree you can see them move. But I’m exaggerating the tiller more than normal due to the limb profile I’m aiming for. Which it a gentle widening of the limbs from handle to midlimb with no distinct fade. So since it’s narrower than mid limb and thicker due to being closer to t he handle, I don’t want to see that area bending much. Where it’s currently at I can finish off the tillering with just a few scrapes in the inner limb at this point.
I hope that makes sense.
Kyle
-
I think PatB said he wait's until last to finish the fade area.
-
Me too.
-
Well I shot the swap bow today, a little too much weight for my liking, but she shoots nice.

-
I’m working on getting the tips shaped and nocks recut but once I get t. Bow done and shooting to make me content, I picked up something interesting I hope will work for a handle wrap. A little sharkskin. I happened to be in Springfield for work and Springfield leather had some skins on sale, so figured, why not.
Kyle
-
Looking forward to seeing the grip done, Kyle.
Get er done, Rich..

Sanded all the sanding marks out of the riser and finished shaping the tips today. :)
Poring down rain for the rest of the evening.
-
Someone should have a bow waiting for them.
-
Did first coats yesterday... Do a little grain filling today...
-
Someone is getting a bow delivered today:)
-
Depending on weather and COVID test results, I hope to get to the shop this weekend to accomplish at least a little something.
-
Got the bow last night from Travis and opened it this morning. Excellent glue lines and finish. Travis could i put a fast flight string on it? Looks like i can. It will get shot this weekend. Bonus i have an extra tube to ship with.
-
Fast flight should be fine Dan
-
Holy crap. My limbs came in was at heavy.
Am so confused. Used Gordon's brown been using BP clear.
So now I will go back to the clear and use those stacks.

Roy are making Mike walk to the front porch to find nothing there for your entertainment? That’s cold!!
-
No I am not.
Post office delivered his bow an hour ago.
-
Dang, lucky ol mike!
-
He's prolly taking his nap:)
Or playing wif the bow:)
-
Mike, a bow I just made for myself with brown glass came out at 67# when it should have been 50#. Still trying to figure out why. My swap bow using green glass came out perfect.
-
Max, will post pictures this weekend. Travis that Zircote in the handle is gorgeous. By the way it shoots my arrows like all the other longbow I have.
-
Well Birdbow I just done one in green to that came out perfect also Pretty sure the brown was .040. Guess I need to measure my cut off piecws.
Also had a set of curve limbs tooo heavy my fault on those tho.
Kenny getting ready for a big order.

What's in the tube Stic?
-
Nothing now Max :bigsmyl:
-
Looks great now Max, riser too. Do you use VHT to finish it? :)
-
I did a little work today. The picture is just a little shy of full draw but pretty only a couple inches shy. I didn’t realize I was pulling a bit shy until I pulled a pic from the video. But it’s about right I’m weight and feels good shooting. So I’ve started the finish work. Going with some ball python sheds for decoration.
Kyle

Yep

Okay I got a box from Mr. Roy today .A tri lam boo backed. Really nice craftsmanship. also a leather cupped stringer. I shot it 15 or 20 times so far. Pretty impressed with its manners. And it hits hard to. Shooting 600 carbons. Feels like about 45 lbs. Roy ?
Had a shoulder injection a couple of days ago so dont want to get too carried away yet. Try to utube it soon tho.

-
I hear roy makes an ok bow
-
Good looking bows guy's...
Slow building on my part this week,, too much day time job.
-
Glad you like it Mike.
That white crap on the leather grip is from that foam I padded it with for shipping, that should come off with a little cleaner of some sort but not harsh stuff or it will wear off with use.
It's about 46.5 @ 28". It will drop maybe 2 or 3 pounds after 300 to 400 shots.
I sent you a pm too.
-
Roy, did you do an actual baseball stitch on the grip?
-
No just straight across.
-
No just straight across.
That's how I do it too.
-
Sweet!!
Did I miss the required full draw pic, Mike? :)
-
Maybe he can't find dah camera?
-
It finally happened, I worked on the bow.... well.... I got the riser block in the hot box anyway.
-
Not wifout pichers ya didn't:)
-
I got another limb cooking today and may be get another tomorrow afternoon.
Nah Kenny gonna Utube it soon tho.
Shot it more today. Don't know if it's just a good design or maybe ole Roy knows what he is doing. But no need to get glass splinters if ya got one this good.
Well now he have to get bigger hats
-
LOL
Glad ya like it, Mike..
-
I did the last of the sanding today... When the wind dies I'll do the final coats and ship her off...

I’m done with my trade bow, minus shooting it some more. I don’t really want to let go of this one, but that’s a good thing I guess. I hope to finish up a few odds and ends, and possibly be ready to ship next week.

Full draw picture. Bow is a shooter Travis we were shooting 350 carbons and 65 spine cedars for a 55 lb bow. Have the brace height at 7 right now and may raise it another 1/4 inch. I will post more pictures of the bow tomorrow.
-
Okay this not the best VDO but you get the idea.

I understand Mike, that's what my Quad is for:)
-
I worked on my victim today. This set of limbs come in on what he ask for
. somewhere between 0 and hunnert :bigsmyl: The riser is gray stable maple with charcoal veneers on the limbs. I put some striped maple also gray on the front of the riser and limb tips. Getting the overlays feathered before hand works really well for me. the white part is G10

Sweet bow Dan! Nice job Travis!
-
Good job, Mike....
-
Wow!
There are a lot of good looking bows being built. Makes me feel more like a slug with my lack of progress. Doc says another three weeks before I can go back into the shop.
-
Plenty of time
-
No worries, Walt....
Heal up then worry about bows..
-
... Makes me feel more like a slug with my lack of progress. Doc says another three weeks before I can go back into the shop.
At least you have a Doc's note. Makes me feel like less than a slug.
-
Count me in on the slug parade
-
- Official build period 27 Jan - 4 June
- Grace period 5 June - 5 July
Relax guys, there is plenty of time to make a bow.
-
No worries Walt. I think we can all agree you have some extenuating circumstances. We will accommodate as necessary.

Spraying my swap bow tonight if it warms up a little. It's normally good weather in Southern Utah this time of year but it snowed yesterday.
-
I'm in a disconcerting pause state and it's kinda irritating. The weather has been a major impediment for me since most of my work is done outside.
On top of that, I was giving my form a close inspection yesterday and in the right light there were some very slight dips visible. This form was a PITA from the git go. Started with the "router incident" :(
I'm going to rip the glass strip off a work on it some more. If that's not satisfactory I'm gonna make a new template and re do it.
So, that's my report for the week.
-
Welllll... It finally looks like a good day to paint... It is dead calm and foggy and everything is covered in dew... It has been very dry and windy for the last week which makes for lots of dust in the air... I'll wait until the fog burns off but before the wind picks up and the dew leaves... (old indian trick)
Who says I'm not patient?? It's like I'm stalking my prey... ;)
-
Video the spraying process:)
-
OKay got some pics with base coats. Needs to cure more.
It is pretty much gray charcoal color. First a pic of my hand after the build string broke. I think the string slapped it on the right and the arrow on the left. and it hurt.

Nice looking stick there, Stic... Really liking those tips... What did you use for the underlying layer??
-
Great to see so many moving along!
Quick reminder: Please PM me when you are ready to ship!
-
Base coats are gloss lacquer. Top coats will be 3 coats of dull Kyrstal. One coat wet and then kinda fog the rest.
-
Stic... What I meant was what did you use for the tip blocks or tip laminations??
-

Looks good Stic!
-
That's a sharp looking bow Mike. I got my swap bow sprayed up last night, turned out great. I use Krystal in the satin finish.
-
Very nice, Mike
-
Finish work is all done. I tweaked the tiller a couple days ago and it looks and feels better. I finished it out with truoil after flying down some ball python sheds, I went with sharkskin for the handle wrap and stitched it in with a round leather lacing. I like how it turns out and the way the handle feels.

Shredd that is G10 I got off the big auction. I have several cut off pieces that will work for more tips. Almost like the maple is floating.
-
Looks cool... Has a pearl like look to it...
-
I got some work done on a bow today. Osage and walnut.
I’m not sure if this will be my swap bow.
I also glued up two more risers. Canary wood, zebra wood and a mosaic accent.
I’ll build another bow and decide which one to send.
Dave.
-
Very nice, Dave
That's how I want to make the next riser I put together...
-
Ran into a snag and starved a glue joint gluing on the handle. Hopefully I can fix it or I will be starting a new bow.
-
Damn, hope you can fix it up.
-
Very nice, Dave
That's how I want to make the next riser I put together...
Thanks Roy. The mosaic is pretty easy to make. I did it wrong before and it wouldn’t bend into the curve, so I glued up a block and sliced it into thin strips. Then I cut some thin veneers and ran everything through the drum sander. I was able to get the backing strips down to 1/32” thick with no problems. I do love that drum sander!
Dave.
-

-
It's not 3°, I am at the tail end of my cold, no other urgent issues calling this morning...
It must be bow shop day!!!!!!! :shaka:
-
Skeeter, take care of the urgent issues before ya get clear to the shop, you’ll just hafta go back ( hope ya make it)
-
Swap bow’s done and should ship out early next week. I designed this bow to be d’shaped when strung but have good speed and be easy to shoot. Green glass, boo cores, locally cut walnut, some red elm accents and 64”50#.
-
Ok, I have plan A in place and I am happy enough with it that I see no need in plan B. However, I am never opposed to having backups so I would welcome input on Plan A backups.
Plan A is Bocote riser and veneers.
Plan A backup 1, Cedar riser with I beam, just not sure between bocote or maple for the I beam.
Plan A backup 2. Cherry riser and no clue on the veneers. Far left is a wood that I can't seem to retain the name of, no matter how many times Kenny tells me. You can see in the pic that it seems to darken over time, like Osage. Then we have Birdseye maple, spalted maple, cedar and curly maple. The maples, I was thinking about dying to a color that would be better suited with the cherry. I welcome any input on the options.
-
Nice one bird
skeater---Cedar with the maple I beam
-
Green glass and walnut look great together. Especially with the bamboo for contrast. Very nice bow.
Skeater, it’s hard to choose. I like the spalted maple and also the cedar the most, but any of your choices will look great.
Dave.
-
Michael, very nice.
Lonnie, Plan A backup 1, Cedar riser with I beam, just not sure between bocote or maple for the I beam.
-
Bacote I say.
My swap has the string stretching now. Be ready to ship next week.
-
What type string ya use, Mike?
-

Got her all done today. Will shoot it some tomorrow. Got a nice no sheen finish gonna be good for hunting. Sealskin rest. Will get some outside pics tomorrow.

A little update for my swap bow:
I lost my calipers at some point since I moved into the new house last August and had been looking for them since the start of the swap. I needed to confirm the thickness of all the stuff I had so far so I could order my core lams. Last Monday I finally gave in and ordered a new set, they arrived Friday... Saturday I was up in the garage loading the truck for a dump run when I found my dag-blam calipers sitting on top of the summer tires for my wife's car. Good times...
I put in my order for the final bow parts this morning and should be set to get started by some time next week. I will get the monthly update posted later today once I finish my work tasks.
-
I understand about the calipers:)
I was looking all over the workbench for my glasses one time..
I had them on, LOL
-
They always show up right after you get new ones. prolly right where you left them

Yeah... they gonna be of her all wrapped up and ready to ship...
-
LOL
That's how Stic does it:)

Ya happy RichieBoy?

Here she be... The grain pops more when in the sunlight... I wanted to have something with more grain in it but I had nothing like that fully dried... She is a hair below par for performance... I believe because I tweaked the hyper-lam... :dunno: Going back to old recipe like Bue... :) Over all she came out nice without any real hiccups...

Alright, day late and a dollar short. Here is the monthly update.
Gathering Materials: 2/18
Build Stage: 11/18
Shipped: 5/18
Received: 3/18
We are nearing the half mark! I am tracking another 4 people who are nearly ready to ship. Overall we are doing great, and still have just over two months before the deadline. Thank you all for making this pretty painless, and keep up the great work! :archer2:
-
-
Today I started tearing the form apart. I spotted a couple little waves in it when the light hit it just right. :(
-
NOT GOOD
Acrylic paint so it WILL come OFF.
I was trying to make it look like curly wood.
When I put the red on top of the light color it looks PINK :banghead:
It would have looked good with the red on top of the black glass
(https://i.imgur.com/ZBA3K8H.jpg)
I sprayed some finish where the red phenolic meets the paint, still no good
(https://i.imgur.com/mnjgvYM.jpg)
-
Why did you paint it Mark?
-
I wanted to use clear glass but I got streaky glass the last 2 times I ordered it (not from Kenny) .
I've done some Faux painting before on glass.
-
-
Black glass looks nice in my opinion.
-
I like black glass too, especially on ugly veneers:)

Making progress on the brakes and making corrections to the form.
-
Ugh, brake work sucks.
-
I glued tip overlays on a bow that’s about ready for final tillering and I prepared lams and a riser for another one as insurance.
That was yesterday. Today I was at funland ( work ). ☹️
Dave.
-
Trade bow received! A great little bamboo backed Osage from Caleb Swisher. It’s nice and short with a really nice profile! And shoots well too! Sorry about the horrible lighting for the full draw, it’s where I have to take the picture right now and the lighting isn’t great. I really like the raccoon emblem on the top limb
Thank you sir!
Kyle
-
Glad it made it there in one piece! I hope you enjoy!

Nice bow!
I sure hope my bowyer isn't an overachiever. I haven't told my wife I signed up this year, and somehow the subject of prior swaps came up yesterday and I got the distinct hint that if a bow shows up before I make much more progress on getting the addition wrapped up and through inspection, my heirs will have to pass said bow along to my recipient... :o
-
Great, have her send it to Uncle Roy......
:wavey: :wavey:
-
Dave, I'd tell her who's boss around here, I'll get to the addition when I dang well please.
(under my breath as I worked on the addition) :biglaugh:

So I have glued up, cut and sanded Plan A backup 1's riser, cedar and maple, but it feels very light. Should Cedar be stabilized to use in a riser?
-
Lonnie, from everything I’ve been told cedar won’t take resin. I think you’d want a good strong ibeam using it in a riser. I’ve heard of it being used for limb cores. Sounds like it takes a little more stack to get poundage but it makes a quick bow. I have never tried it but if I find a clean board I might try it.
-
Not very strong for a riser.
-
Good info. I will look for another option and save that riser for a light draw weight bow in the future.
-

That's going to be a good looking bow rainman! Is the belly Ipe?
-
I just finished testing my first bow swap candidate. It came in at the low end of my poor victim’s weight range.
Osage and walnut and a little extra for the tips.
I have another bow waiting to be glued up. We will see how it turns out.
Dave.
-
Very nice Dave!

Very nice bow there, Dave.
-
Belly on my bow is blood wood, Walnut laminations and bamboo back.
-
Bamboo and bloodwood. It should be a looker.
Dave.
-
The last bloodwood I got was so oily it bogged my drum sander down. 24 grit may have worked :dunno:
-
Looking good woodcarver and Rainman
-
Crooked Stic it will clog up a 49 Nicholson also.
-
Mike, I've had a bad run lately of woods clogging up my drum sander. I did some research and found a solution that worked pretty good the other day but it's a hassle. If you wipe the wood down good with acetone and let it dry quickly before each pass it won't clog up the sanding drum. I was using 60 grit doing light passes. If anyone else has any tips for dealing with oily woods I'm open to trying them out.

My swap bow is shipping today.

-
It sure is nice getting home after a long day at work and finding a package waiting for me.😁
Inside was a beauty of a takedown longbow from Mike Miller aka Crooked Stic.
Thank you Mike! It’s prettier in person than in a picture and feels great in my hand.
60”, 47#@28”.
Now, if you will excuse me, I have a bow to shoot... 😉
Dave.
-
Awesome bow, congrats Dave..
Good job stickypops
-
Looks good. What is your draw length.
-
About 27 1/2”. I sure look old in that picture. Funny how I don’t feel like it.
At least until my knee hurts. 😕
Dave.
-
Oh, and I like the seal skin. It’s my favourite rest material.
Dave.
-
You got a nice one there Dave. Nice work Stik
-
Congrats Dave! Stic, awesome job on that one.
An update for my bow. I now have all my materials and will be trying to get the bow laid up this week before I go out of town. I leave Monday and will be gone for the rest of the month. I will still have internet access and will be available as usual should you guys need anything.
-
Looking good.
-
Sweet!! Congrats and nice job Mike!
-
Gotta love bow day. Congrats.
-
Glad you are liking it.
-
great looking bow Stic!
began fine tuning limbs and handle
Now for my tragedy....
built over 100 bows overtime and never had a failure like this!
My victims bow was coming along nicely, tuning in limbs and handle.
well on the final shot it blew up in my face, cutting my nose and eyelid..thank God I did not loose an eye.
After forensics there was a wormhole in the wood in a area internal that had to weaken it.
Now back to the beginning..... [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] :o
-
That sucks. Glad you are not hurt to bad.
-
Damn, glad you are ok.
-
well on the final shot it blew up in my face, cutting my nose and eyelid..thank God I did not loose an eye.
That sucks, glad to hear you weren't seriously hurt. I always wear safety glasses or impact resistant sunglasses while shooting in a bow for just this reason. There is a lot of stored energy in a drawn bow and it is uncomfortably close to your face if a failure were to occur.
Mark
-
That is too bad.
-
Good thing you weren’t seriously hurt.
Dave.
-
What are the woods in that blew up one? Glad you are not seriously hurt.
-
I pulled my second candidate out of the clamps and sanded off the glue boogers and rough edges. The riser had slipped a bit, but it sanded out ok. This bow feels heavy for some reason. It has more curve to it than the first bow and the core is maybe 1/64” thicker. I didn’t think it would make that much of a difference.
Dave.
-
What are the woods in that blew up one? Glad you are not seriously hurt.
Thanks all...
Walnut, with dymondwood flair. plus fiberglass overlays..
Found a worm hole that could have weaken at pivot point that was not externally visible :dunno:
-
It looks like there could’ve been a adhesion problem on that accent lam. Was it glass?
-
The worm hole definitely wouldn't do it any good.
-
In my opinion walnut is not a good riser wood. But some of it looks good. And is way better off with an I beam.

Tracked my swap bow and someone should be getting a bow very soon.
-
Ugh, never enough time. I really hate going out of town. Why can't my car sell itself and wire me the money?
-
Well that sucks.... Glad we are not gonna be calling you 'one eye Bo'... ;)
The phone has been ringing and got tons of work plus all kinda of projects goin on... All I gotta do is glue a strike plate and arrow rest on this puppy and she'll be good to go...
Oh.... And make a string.... Oh... And package her up....
-
-
And you are still out of town?
-
Mike, this bow is gorgeous. Your craftsmanship is excellent! The bow is the cleanest I've ever seen. The transitions are so good that the overlays almost look like they are printed on the bow.
She is a sweet shooter! Dead in the hand and nearly silent. She pushes my 550 grains downrange fast and they bury deep in the target. Only took me three rounds to get dialed in on my grouping.
Thank you for your hard work and the beautiful bow. I feel a bit unworthy to be honest. I will get a full draw picture up in a bit once I find a teenager with a phone.

Oh it's the bow, trust me. I'm just the string actuator here

I understand that, the bow Kenny sent me is so darn accurate......

I’m glad you like your new bow. I love building them and I’m glad it made it there safe.

I've been busy doing other things getting ready for the Tn. Classic.
Mother nature at full blast , weeds, fallen trees and out of control bushes and getting the Xmark ready for the season.
I have cut the grass 2 times already.
I will finish up the swap bow as soon as I get back.

Didn't happen wifout pichers:)
:wavey:
-
Well I came home to a nice package From Mo_coon-catcher,
A very nice longbow, Draws at 45#@28".
Thanks Kyle! Great workmanship!
-
After I let my face heal after the bow exploding, I am back at it to get this swap bow done!
(or my ego...) :biglaugh:
-
Vince, I built a TD with the limbs set into riser like that, it cracked in those corners. Is that where the other one failed? I built a new riser for the limbs of phenolic with 1/4" scales of bocote...
-
Good job Kyle.
Hope you have better luck on the next one, Vince.

When I learned Machining and Tool and Die work, inside corners was a No No.
You can buy endmills with a very small radius on the corners that will keep that from happening.
A 1/32" radius is plenty. 45 the outside corner of the limb butt.
I use to take a sharpening stone to the corners of the endmills and I was set to go.
It should work on wood

I agree that riser is going to want to crack in those corners every time. I would say use a bigger radius for wood, more like 1/8" and radius or chamfer the corner on the limb for clearance. Even then I would be worried about the riser cracking there, it just isn't a good way to load wood.
Mark
-
I say a good size G10 Ibeam. maybe .375 might be good with your radius.

Kenny,
I actually have a G10 bed from pad to pad, the portion between the pads that looks one piece are multiple laminates of glass
On the bow handle that blew up was a deflex design,,I found a knot and worm hole that gave way under the stress.

Weeeell... It's a done deal... She is on her way... I hope the victim is not victimized... :)

I won't be here to receive it

Good deal Vince!

Finally got some shop time today and this build is being just as contrary now as when it started. I may have to rethink using a super lam, not matter how drastic I make the scarf joint it just doesn't want to hold together. I have it glued up once more and give a good full day to cure and see what happens on the next dry run.
-
Lonnie, if I understand what your saying the lam is a little to thick to make the bend of the riser with out popping the joint. If that’s what it is you could splice a piece in then you would have two joints but they would be moved away from the high stress bend area in the center of the riser.
-
That is a great idea, especially since I have lost about 3 inches of length already. That would also give me a little more flat area to aid in getting a good fit for the form.
Thank you sir.
-
You can also make a short sled about 2 in. shorter than your riser. Dead center of that sled apply a few layers of masking tape to get a buildup in that spot. Now put your scarf joint on top of the tape and run it thru the drum sander. Thins the joint so it will flex.
-
Check in. Should be laying up later this week. Think I have the form issues handled.
-
-
Thanks Shredd for a very nice bow. I haven’t shot a bow from someone else for several years. The bow I got in the swap is mid 40’s and 62”...perfect. Has a good amount of reflex and feels pretty quick with good tension on the string at brace height. It shoots really nice for me.
-
Very nice, congrats.
Good job, Rich.
-
Glad you like it Mike... Hope she works well for you... That bow takes a 62" string... I'm weird... I write the string size on the bow... No confusion then... :)
-
Thanks Royster...
-
Very nice!!
-
Very nice.
-
Checking in. Addition is almost ready to schedule concealment inspections and then it's someone else holding the bag until siding, insulation, and drywall are done. I plan to sneak down to the shop and get a real start on the bow this weekend while the better half is busy with other things...
-
-
I like the idea of marking with string length. Seems to be one of the great mysteries to many.
-
Hell Yeah... I see people struggle with this all the time... I think it is just common sense to put the string length on there... If they need to know the full length of the bow while it's unstrung for some reason, they could just measure it...
-
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] starting to look like a bow. This Bloodwood is pretty but much stronger than Osage. 3 hours on the tree today and don't have the short string on yet.

Nice...
-
Got the bow to 51 at 24 inches today. So it would be a little heavy still for Kenny. Lol
-
Oh hell yes, 32 pounds at 26 inches is bout his limit...
-
I don't think he has a 26 inch draw without a release.
-
I can draw 26" behind me back!
-
LOL
-
Got couple of dry runs done yesterday, a little tweak here and there. Hopefully I will be mixing some glue today. If I can get the yard mowed.... :banghead:
-
A lot of good looking bows being made. I need to step up get my trade bow glued up.
I got a set of risers glued up and a couple of weeks back then started to true them up on my thickness sander. Unfortunately, the adjusting table quit working and required a complete disassembly and rebuild. I ordered the needed parts, rebuilt/assembled everything (several times), and finally have it adjusted and working like a new machine.
Here are a few pictures of the risers, bocate and Brazilian Rosewood, profile sanded and ready for glue up:

Looking very nice, Walt.
I can only imagine rebuilding a drum sander:)

Those are both sharp Walt!

We are nearly at half of all bows shipped and received! Well done guys. I am also tracking one more nearly ready to ship. Overall we are moving along nicely, and still over 30 days to go before the deadline. Gentle reminder to all those still in the early stages of building (myself included): 33 days to deadline. Thank you all for keeping this thing alive and moving!

I put a first coat of finish on my first swap bow candidate. It looks good and came in right on weight. I also spent a couple of hours scraping the crap out of my second candidate bow. It’s quite a bit over weight, but I’m hoping to bring it down.
It’s tough to do when you can only tiller from the sides.
Dave.
-
There is a law subordinate to Newton's law that goes like this.
"A finished riser block, unsupported in the presence of the earth's gravitational pull, will always land on it's feathered fade."
And so it was with the trade bow riser as it fell from the form fully slathered in EA40. :o With no other riser to take it's place the brakes were put on the lay up and the glass, lams and tip wedges that were also on the form became trash. Luckily the remaining parts were not yet coated with glue.
No pictures cause I'm hoping that Roy's law: "It didn't happen wif out pitchers" will somehow influence the time warp and undo the event. I'll give it 24 hours. :)
-
That sucks, but funny the way you explained it.
-
Damn that sucks Mike.
-
Damn that sucks Mike.
Yeah, I can use the damaged block in another build but not in this trade bow. The length is too critical. Onward!!
Rainman, some of my exclamations immediately after were not so funny. Luckily no children were around.!! :biglaugh:
-
OUCH. I have lost one on the floor too, luckily before glue up.

I got back to the trade build on Saturday, With the drum sander working I sanded all the lams to the desired thickness, tapered the but ends with my butt splice jig, then glued them together.
The lams glued together, laid out, and ready for the glue up.
No pictures of the glue up but I did film it with my new to me GoPro. I haven’t had the time to pull individuals pictures from it yet. I have been practicing using the GoPro whenever possible to improve the quality of my hunting videos.
I this morning after taking the bow out of the form.
Cleaned up the epoxy, ran thru the drum sander and squared everything up. Before narrowing to my desired thickness of 1.30” I run the string line and verified everything was aligned.
Narrowed down to 1.30” and the limbs tapered to 1/2” at the tips.
-
Some day I will figure out why the photos turn 90* when I upload them :banghead:
-
Looking great Lonnie and Walt!
-
Handle and tip overlays ready to glue up....almost. Forgot the Bocate for the handle over lay. Luckily I found a 1/8” piece in one of my buckets, narrowed it, then cut it to shape and added it to the stack.
Set up in my overlay form. Really the overlay form for my recurves but with a couple of shims it works fine for my longbows.
The tip overlays glued and clamped in place. Note the wooden blocks taped below the overlays, they keep the overlays from sliding down while I wrap them with plastic wrap. The plastic wrap holds the overlays in place and keeps them from slipping while apply the clamps.
-
Nice job, Walt.
I rotated the pictures and replied to your PM.

It's Spectraply.
Max, I thought about that and it's still an option. I have been working on another section to become a lam through style and then fashion the second piece from the Spectraply to go over the face lams.
I'm getting weathered out so too much time to think about this. :)
-
What taper do you use on the butt splices?
Thanks,
Mark
-
If you are talking scarf joints not that flat. Maybe 15 degrees.
-
Looks like it would be a very strong joint
.100 to .150 per inch :dunno:
-
I really don’t know what the taper is. Brent had one for splicing lams for his Sheepeaters, I copied it, made mine around 2007/8. The joints are a lot stronger then the 30* ones I used before and often you can’t tell they are there.
How I made the butt splice sled. I used double sided tape to hold a 1/2”-3/4” ( +/-) piece of riser wood that was laying around my shop to a piece of maple that was left over from making my lam and taper sleds. Ran it through the cabinet saw both top and bottom to cut all the way through. Then ran it through my home made drum sander with the piece of wood still attached. Took a total of 5 minutes to make.

Alright I'm officially working now. Squared up all my riser blocks this morning but ran out of time before work. Riser block cut and glue tomorrow! I'll get some pictures up when I get home tonight.
-
-
I don't think I'm going to be able to use the block of zebra unfortunately. It ended up pretty skinny once it was all cleaned up. Going to have to do some color coordinating tonight!
-
Ibeam it
-
I would, but it's well under 2" in both directions.
-
Sorry for the delay, here are the pictures promised. The zebra is a little thicker than I thought still, about 1 13/16" both directions. I'm leaning towards the zebra/bocote or something with the bubinga. I also have core tuff riser accent strips in red and black to stiffen and dress up the I beam a little. Thoughts?

-
Went with this. Roy a little help on the rotation please?
-
Done...
Looks sharp..
-
Thank you Sir! I got it bonded and cured in the oven tonight. Pulled it out to find the bubinga twisted all to crap. Going to take it to the machines in the morning and see if it's salvageable, but my guess is it'll be a donation to my pen turning buddy. Looks like I will get a chance to use that zebra after all lol!
-
Always thought bubinga was pretty stable if it's dry.
-
I have some large Bubinga planks that have been in my heated shop for 25 years. Some of them when cut into thinner pieces bends and twists. Seems to be a lot of tension in them that you do not see until cut in smaller pieces.
-
Yes there was a lot of tension in the block, but oddly not throughout the entire thing. One slice came off fine, the next nearly bound the table saw. I had to wedge it to keep from pinching the blade. I figured the other two would hold it straight during the cure but I was wrong. No biggie, I have plenty of alternatives and my friend can use it to make about 4,000 pens :biglaugh:
-
Yew is another wood that has a mind of it's own and will play tricks on you.
I've cut lams off a dry straight 2" x 2" piece of yew and it turned itself into a barber shop pole:)
I heated it and made it straight and as it cooled it turned right back to a twisted piece of wood.
-
Well. My motor for my edge sander still isn't back from the shop so I'm resorting to plan B...a hickory selfbow. I will work with my recipient on getting a glass bow built later if desired. But here we are roughed out. Plans are to put some reflex in it and heat treat and we will see where we go with it.
-
Plan B looks pretty cool!

Snakeskin and finish going on the end of this week.

My recurve project is not going well! At this point it is questionable as to whether I can produce an acceptable bow for the trade. Order is in to kennym for materials needed for the alternative bow.

Hope things work out for you Mike.

Some great bows in the works here!

Got my riser block all cleaned up and cut to size. Skiving lams and shaping riser over the next couple days.

Hope things work out for you Mike.
Oh, it'll all be good. I'm working on the plan "B" riser right now and waiting on an order from Kenny. Been raining for three days but it's looking good for through the weekend.

Wenge. Not fun to work with but lovely in the end. :)

Why isn't it fun to work with?
-
Slivers and very open grain. Gotta be very careful feathering the fades. Open grain is a PITA to fill at finish time. I rub it ful of SG for filler. I ordered some thick Starbond and am thinking it might be just the ticket for the job. We'll see! :)
-
Don't think I'd like that...
-
Well back at putting things together for the swap...
going with zebra on this one.
-
That looks sharp..
-
Finally on vacation for week. Progress will be made.
-
I’ve been working on my second candidate bow. It came in heavy due to my leaving the backing bamboo a bit thick. 🤬
So, I have been scraping and sanding at it for some time. This afternoon, I got it to brace height and I think it looks good. It’s still a bit heavy, but that’s something I can fix. I left it strung for now and I’ll see how it handles it.
I’ll post a picture later.
Dave.
-
Here are my swap bow candidates. The one with no string is a mild r/d. Osage and walnut with mosaic tip overlays. It’s right on my poor victim’s lower weight requirement and it shoots well.
The strung bow is the one that I would prefer to send, only because I think it’s prettier and it should be a performer. It’s a highly r/d longbow. Osage, canary wood, walnut and some mosaic. If I can drop a few more pounds I’ll be a happy camper.
Dave.
-
I forgot, it also has a zebra and maple I beam.
Dave.
-
Nice work, Dave.
Atta boy, Lonnie..

Thanks, That is actually my pattern jig, I just taped over everything and used plastic. It just hit me that was easier than making a jig that is basically the same thing.

Here’s what she looks like now. Still 3 1/2# over weight.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I just noticed that the lower limb has started to wander off to one side a bit. I must have scraped too much on one side.
Dave.
-
Nice Dave.
Scrape the other side and there goes the 3.5 #.

I got it back to being straight, but the weight didn’t change. I think that I had better leave well enough alone. I’m afraid that much more scraping might make the limbs unstable. It’s about 3 1/2# over weight. So, here’s where I ask my victim this question.
I have two bows that I can ship to you. One is right on your lower weight and shoots well. It’s a nice bow but it has a couple of minor cosmetic flaws. The bamboo sometimes tries to cup during glue up and a couple of small areas have glue lines that show.
The other is the bow in the above picture. I think that it’s a prettier bow than the first and it’s a bit better performer, but it’s 3 1/2 pounds over your max weight requirement. It’s likely to lose a bit more weight with final sanding and shooting in.
I would be grateful if the victims who haven’t yet received a bow would let me know what their preference would be.
Thanks.
Dave.
-
I am at the finishing stages, I have been shooting it in a bit today, so far so good. Next is some final sanding and finish. Hopefully I will get that done this weekend.
Does it still qualify for swap bow if I was having so much fun I shot it enough to call it a used bow? :archer2:
-
LOL Lonnie..
-
I would be happy with 3-1/2# over woodcarver
-
I’m fine with anything within 10#’s of the max weight I listed.
I received new glass and veneers from Kenny while out of state last weekend. Got the bow glued up on Monday evening, should have it ready for a finish tomorrow evening or Sunday.
-
I spoke with canopyboy today and we figure he won't be able to make either deadline. All good though, I had names available to shuffle around. We are still good to go with everyone receiving a bow, and hopefully we can get Dave in next year. We are at 8/17 received now.
-
Nice bows Lonnie and Dave! Dave I'd be fine with a little over weight.
-
Dave there is nothing wrong with a bow 3.5 pounds heavier. And like you said it will lose a couple pounds after a couple hundred shots. The bow I shipped to Mike was 2 pounds over his max, I just didn't tell him, LOL.
Sorry to hear canopyboy had to drop out, you guys should see the beautiful longbow he made me a couple years ago.
Walt good to see you are healed up, hope all is well.
-
, you guys should see the beautiful longbow he made me a couple years ago.
let's see it
-
Bow on top.
Bottom bow is a Kenny bow.
The wolf carving on right side was done by Dave, wood carver 2.
-
Nice
-
Thanks and it shoots very well...
I forget the name of some of the wood he used but his Dad had it in their shop for a long time.
I felt honored Dave used it in a bow for me.
:archer2:
-
Which should it be??
Interested in the opinions of our esteemed membership as to which veneers to pair with the riser wood in the picture.

What are those gnarly ones on the left? I really like them. The second from left is probably the best match in my opinion.
-
Left to right:
Marbled Ako
Paldao
Eucalyptus
Tropical Olive
-
The Paldao first pick then the Tropical Olive.
-
Paldaoduro
-
I’ve never heard of it but I like the paldao too.

Thanks guys. I really like the canary wood. Best part is I have another riser like that already roughed out. One for me maybe... 😁
Dave.
-
Got my trade bow shaped, tillered, put over 100 arrows thru it, built a new string, and final sanded. I will try to put the filler coat on tomorrow evening and spray it later this week.
My buddy Otis looks like I feel.
-
Dave,
That is a really nice bow.
-
Dang Walt, that is nice! Every bow I’ve seen built this year I liked. Bunch of super nice bows built this year!

Very nice Walt.
Otis looks tired, he help you build it?
:clapper:
-
Thanks Walt. The braced profile looks a lot like that of your bow.
I can’t wait to see yours finished. I think it’s colors are going to pop.
This year seems like an exceptional one for good looking bows. Maybe we have more time to dedicate to building due to all the lockdowns and restrictions.
A small bit of silver lining in an otherwise crappy time.
Dave.

I was going to put a leather handle on, but I like the Walnut to much. Have to make a string and it will be shipping this week.

You’re right about the walnut. It’s too nice to cover up.
Nice bow.

Another nice one! Very nice Dan! She’s a slender girl!

Good deal Mike.
-
No way this bow will make weight!!! :dunno: Gonna be a nice bow but not for my victim.
On to plan "B"
-
Thanks and it shoots very well...
I forget the name of some of the wood he used but his Dad had it in their shop for a long time.
I felt honored Dave used it in a bow for me.
:archer2:
It was some 40 year old curly koa. Pretty hard to get as lumber anymore, I believe they stopped allowing it to be exported from the islands in raw form awhile ago. But nothing is too good for Roy...
Good news is I passed all my concealment inspections yesterday. Bad news is that everything is still crazy and I was already planning to run well into the grace period with a backup to send a bow I built for myself last year that just needs a finish. So when Chris said he had to make some swaps and offered me an offramp, I thought hard about it but knew it was probably the best choice. Some amazing bows being made this year and I'm grateful that Chris is doing such a good job running this thing. I certainly plan to be back next year.
-Dave
-
Hopefully things slow down Dave and you can get some fun time in. I know how it is, just finished a two year remodel project, it wasn’t fun! I think I got some of that koa in your bow last year, it’s gorgeous.
-
A few more applications of finish, doll up the shelf and it will be ready for a stamp.

Thanks for the kind words Dave. I am just doing what you told me to do :biglaugh:
Lonnie, that bow looks great! Awesome job.
I had a pattern sanding collar made for my spindle sander by a friend at the machine shop. Made my sanding template last night, should be cured this evening. I am shooting for glue-up tomorrow evening

Well, with the way the build has gone so far it was bound to happen. Within a mere .642 seconds of stupid, I now have to wait a day or so for a full cure on the finish so I can sand and correct a boo boo.
-
That sucks, Lonnie.
-
Don't wear that Hat next time
-
Yup, he prolly bent down to sniff it and horned it:)

Looks nice, Chris.
-
What kind of tape is that? Everything I've tried doesn't want to stick to the wood form.
-
Looks like blue painters tape..
-
It's just plain old 3M Blue 1.8".
-
My victims bow suppose to be delivered today, who knows :dunno:
-
USPS is showing a delayed delivery. Guess the mystery remains for another day or three!
-
Here are the tapes I use. 3M flash tape and blue original. I put flash tape on my form, pressure strips, and the outside surface of all the glass. The stuff is great because adhesives don't bond to it. Makes cleaning up after cure a breeze. The Blue masking tape is low adhesive, but still sticky enough that it won't peel up on its own like other painters tape.

Does heat make the flash tape stick to the glass more, and harder to get off?

-
Does heat make the flash tape stick to the glass more, and harder to get off?
No, it is heat resistant. We use it under -22" vacuum and up to 300 degree heat at work for composite repairs. Comes off the same every time.
-
Had the bow on cure since midnight. Hoping to have it off the form around 1800. I won't bore you with a picture of a firehose tied to some plywood
-
USPS tracking number is worthless now days.
I have a package coming to me and My bow swap going to my victim, NO information between here and there. :dunno:
-
I agree Mark, I think they throw darts at a dart board in the dark.
Chris ya have pictures today?
-
Well, the bow is finally ready to package up, but keeping true to the path of this build, the PVC pipe I have turns out to be too short. I guess I will hit the big box store tomorrow for some shipping material.
Apologies to all that I sneaked in to the grace period.
-
No problem, Lonnie.
-
Lonnie, the grace period doesn't start until the 4th. You're still good!
Roy, yes I do. The bow came off the form just fine and everything seems to be in order. The extra bow snot still needs cleaned off but I will edit this post with a picture in just a minute.

Update,
the last month has been a real challenge my wife contracted covid pnumonia.
Been a uphill battle but by the grace of God, my wife is turning the corner.
With that I am honoring my commitments, and have been back at getting this bow DONE.....
Have some lipstick and fine tuning and a finish,,, at out she goes!!

Thats some nice work there.
Glad your wife is getting better. A friend had pneumonia and was hospitalized. Then he caught covid in the hospital. :o

Hey Lonnie, I did that once. I been known to make a box out of those moving boxes they sell at Lowes. It's a PITA, bu it serves until USPS recognizes our needs and adds them to the free box 📦 program.

-
Lonnie, try heating the tube with a heat gun and flattening it with a board while it’s still soft.
Dave.
-
Curious: what are you paying to ship your bow? I sent a selfbow from PA to ohio few months back via FedEx and it cost me over $40 cheapest delivery just a few hours away. If I wanted tracking it was $75. I never remember paying that much when I was shipping lam bows but maybe I've just been out of the loop.
-
$28 dollars USPS from Missouri to New York, that is with $500 insurance 1 week delivery. I have never had a problem with USPS.

I hear PVC pipe cost more than PVC pipe wrapped with brown paper to ship, USPS wants cardboard look

I think mine was 26 dollars. I think it was probably the same pvc pipe rainman shipped in.

I shipped denver to Connecticut for 21.80 .

Sorry guys! You can all stop checking your porches for a mad max bow. I hit the lottery, and on a Thursday to boot! It’s gonna be a good weekend!

Mike that's sweet.

Thanks, Roy. My victim should receive it Monday according to the nice lady at USPS.
-
Ok so here she is...story behind it is a started this bow a while ago. This year I decided to go to twin oaks for the first time and decided to take this bow and finish tillering it there. Got her done and shot the course with it. Got her home and decided to dress her up with a set of snake skins. I hate to let her go which means it's a good candidate right? Lol. I'm doing another one for this year's hunting season. This is without a doubt one of my favorite bows I've built.
-
Nice job Tim.
-
Well, I hope there is at least one of you that had faith in me, cuz I sure didn't know if this was going to happen. I still need to get some duct tape (yep, ran out while packing it up) for the ends and get it to the post. I don't think that will happen today as I have a previous commitment, but Monday for sure. The tube is a horrible looking mess, I don't have any proper clamps for squeezing it to shape while heated, so it sort of looks like it's been run over.

Getting finish on it...
Then ship.

I built a box to ship my bow in. It seems like nobody has any pvc in stock right now. Since everyone has been staying at home due to this damned virus, everything is in short supply or ridiculously overpriced. 2x4’s are selling for about a dollar a foot.
Anyway, I also shot 140 arrows through it today and I have something extra made to go with it. I made a new string for it yesterday. I just need to touch up a small cosmetic defect and I can ship.
Dave.
-
I usually go to a store that sell floor carpets and collect the thick hard pipes that are in the middle of carpet rolls. They just throw them away. Some are made from thick cardboard and some from pvc.
-
We sometimes get big cardboard tubes at work, but I haven’t seen one in some time.
The box was easy enough and it won’t roll off the conveyor at the sorting station.
Dave.
-
Bow is finished, shot in..... :archer2: Tough to let er go....
Boxed up and shipped!!

Wow! There’s gonna be a bunch of bows shipping around next week. Kinda excited. So many nice bows!

We are on the string boys! First draw, 5 1/2" brace height. Not too shabby for an initial tiller. She's a wee bit heavy right now, but I should be able to shave those pounds easy.

I should clarify that this is just where it was once I rough cut the limb tapers and cleaned it up. I will be fixing those limbs.

Great bows this year!!
-
So, it took 3 days for my local PO to send it across town to the local distribution center ??? 😅 My local is a small facility and has no conveyor belts. Musta mistaken it for material for an upcoming plumbing job.
-
Here's another mystery. I mailed it at 80007 and tracking says it was sent from 80004. Maybe some kind of USPS buck passing 🤔?? 🤣
-
I shipped UPS...Not USPS..
Much faster same price.
-
-
I will have to check out the UPS shipping.
Last bow i mailed went to NJ and got there in three days.
-
UPS was higher by a good bit last time I used it, don't remember how much.
-
I think UPS is better on small heavy packages. For one piece bows I think USPS has them beat.
UPS is always quicker...
-
-
Got the limbs squared away and the sight window cut in last night. Shaping ye olde grip and hopefully shooting some arrows tonight!
-
Hey TradBowyer, Tim.....
Where are the pictures of you shooing and the full draw picture?
:wavey:
-
Tim is out of town for the weekend and will hit us up Monday.
Got sight window and shelf finished up. Got the grip shaped enough to hold it and put 100 arrows through it. Shoots nice, but she's a little thumpy. Hopefully shaping the tips cleans that up.
-
Here are the two bows that I built for the swap.
The osage and walnut bow draws about 40# @ 28” and the canary wood bow draws about 52# @ 28”.
Both shoot well. The lighter bow zipps a lightweight arrow and the heavy bow likes a nice heavy arrow.
I’m leaning towards shipping the heavy bow, but I’ll give my poor victim a chance to chime in and choose the one he wants.
Dave.
-
Very nice, Dave.
-
Thanks Roy.
I spent some time shooting both bows in. The one on the left has over 250 arrows through it and the lighter bow has 60 or 70. They both put the arrows right where I’m looking
I should be shipping this week.
Dave.
-
Dave, I like them both. The light one might win by a little
-
Finished shaping the grip. Ready to shape tips and final sand tomorrow.
-
That 40 looks sweet to me! Both very nice but I’m likin the walnut/Osage a lot
-
Nice bows wood carver
-
Bows look great.
-
Tough call, two very nice bows you made there.
-
Here is where I stand. Have to take a break from it today, wife's birthday. Have the string it will ship with on there and nock point set. Everything is sanded to 80 grit. Need to shape tips and final sand/coat. Should ship this week.

Side note: I really hate that I need to put an overlay on the back to cover the veneer splice. Any ideas on how to put it on there without covering the entirety of that wild graft section? Drawing a blank on any other way than running it all the way up the sight window.
-
I have seen bows that in shaping the grip the part where the splice was was gone Dow to riser wood.
Also have seen that part ground flat and a short overlay covering it.
-
Nice bow. That grain is going to pop.
Dave.
-
Nice!! How about a pc of clear glass for overlay to round the grip a bit if that's the idea?
-
Thanks Roy.

Chris,
Looking good!
I have used a small piece 6” +/-, of big horn sheep, bison, water Buffalo, or antelope horn to cover the splices. They shape easy and look good when finished.
-
My trade bow is sprayed and curing right now. The string length is an odd size so I will build some back up strings for it this week, add the shelf rest and side plate, the get it shipped.
-
Nice!! How about a pc of clear glass for overlay to round the grip a bit if that's the idea?
I could definitely do that. How do people feel about being able to see a splice though? I assume most would like to see it covered.
-
Nice work guy's, a couple more about ready to ship
-
Chris, do you have anymore of the veneers? If you did you could put a piece under clear glass then it would blend rite in
-
I have a sizeable portion of pistachio overlay material, however, none of it is the cream color. Here is a closer picture of the splice. Thanks for the input so far guys!

Thanks Tim , she’s a beauty !!
Shot a few times but my arrows were overspined for a non cut to center bow.
I should shoot woodies out of her , what would you guess spine needed with 44 lb and 30” arrows ?
Thanks again and thanks Evil for running this show!
-
Very nice Kenny.
-
Wow....glad it showed up in one piece...hope you like it. Since I don't have a functioning edge sander I've been in a self bow kick and that one was one of my favorites. Hope it works well for you.....here is my pic of BORs bow he sent. Just a beautiful piece... [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Rody has a thing about PJs...

Where are we with number of bows shipped Evil ?
-
Dave, Walt, and I are the last three that need to ship. We also have two in the mail right now.
Dave is pretty much done and looking at shipping this week. I am final sanding and painting this week, hoping to ship Monday. Walt is doing me a huge favor and holding his bow for a couple days to keep the mystery alive for my victim. Thanks again Walt, I appreciate it.
My wife has decided I must absolutely finish the basement renovation this week. I took the week off from work and am instead pulling double shifts at home on the house and the bow  I just have one bedroom's worth of crown moulding, two bedrooms of cove moulding, one furnace vent to cut out and relocate, one closet to trim, a tongue and grrove wall to terminate with a cap, and baseboards to terminate... I sand the bow at night once I'm released by the foreman.
-
Nice :bigsmyl:
-
I got a package today from Lonnie... :goldtooth:
-
Let's see :jumper:
-
I hope it survived, I had to shoehorn it in to the tube a little.
-
Yes... It survived... I will show it off when I get some time... Been busy... Gotta get it while I can...
-
I mailed my swap bow last night. It’s due to be delivered by the 28th.
Dave.
-
Mine just spent it's 14th day "in transit". 😞
-
That's bullcrap...
-
Got my trade bow about set to ship, put the seal skin arrow rest and strikeplate on. Only need to build an extra string or two to ship with it.
-
Nice! is that a sister bow on the bench? I like a seal skin rest, there’s nothing as slick or quiet.
Dave.
-
Really nice walt, but it's a righty
-
Yes that is the sister bow. It was intended to be the trade bow but had streaks in glass. Brand new glass from the company out of Salt Lake City. Kenny M sold me some better glass (which he inspected) for the second bow.
Dave,
I bought a couple 12”x12” pieces of the seal skin about 20 years ago that I only use on special bows.
-
Very nice, Walt..
-
Several years ago I bought some seal skin remnants from a person who makes clothing and other objects with it. I emailed him and explained what I needed it for and he offered to send me one pound of offcuts for $25. He actually sent much more. The bag was stuffed and a lot of it was dyed. I can’t remember who it was so if I ever need more I’ll have to look around.
Dave.
-
I usually don't put anything on the shelf or side area when it's built for someone else since it's part of the tuning process.
-
Got two light base coats on the bow last night. Just need to do the scribbles this morning, then final coat and cure. Will be shipping Monday!
-

-

-
I guess you guys can have a couple pictures.
-
A little help please, Roy? :banghead:
Edit: Thank you!
-
That overlay on the splice looks really good
-
Thanks Max! It's honestly the first one I'm happy with. Sorry for my sideways pictures.
-
Looking good! 👍🏻
Dave.
-
Nice job!! But I sprained me neck ...
-
Looks good Beast... Get on it, Roy... Or people are gonna need a chiropractor...
Got some time to shoot Lonnie's bow tonight, just before dark... Shoots pretty dang good... Arrows go where they are supposed to and can definitely hit the kill zone... Good craftsmanship and a good looking bow, Lonnie... Your joints look tight and I love me some Bocote... Maybe post some pics tomorrow when it's light outside...
-
Here are some more pics... Now I have a matching set... Bow and Pool Cue... :goldtooth:
Great Bow..!!! Thanks Lonnie....
-
You got a nice one Shredd! Lonnie makes a nice bow.
-
Very nice on both...

When you gona ship the last 2 bows :dunno:
-
Mine is shipping this morning. I think Chris is also planning to ship his today.
-
I need to ship your Sheepeater back too.
-
It's been so long and the swap thread is up in the pink section, where I sometimes forget to look, that I totally forgot that I had a bow coming to me...
-
I shipped mine on the 16th. So far, it has gone about 600 miles in the wrong direction. Apparently it was booked on a grand tour of the USA before it gets delivered.
Dave.
-
-
Mine just spent it's 14th day "in transit". 😞
I bet is sat in Memphis 7 of those days.

-
As requested , fully clothed too... :biglaugh:
-
Kenny, thank goodness.
-
Sorry we are dragging a little towards the end here, gents. We will be calling it complete soon!
-
Looks good Kenny.
Was hoping ya didn't have yer fancy smancy pink shorts on...
-
Roy how ya know Kenny got pink shorts :o
-
Cause a little bird told me.
:wavey:
Mark more pictures..
-
That bird prolly still in shock
-
Prolly still laughing...
-
I had a bow show up today. It’s gorgeous! I’ll post some pics tonight after I get time to shoot it a little
-
Well if you got that today it means we are 100% shipped! Couple more to receive and we are finished for the year guys!
-
Beast you are the man, thank you for keeping all this together.
To all the bowyers, there were some mighty fine looking bows this year, all around, but there can only be one winner and I have to boast that I received it!! :shaka: :shaka: :shaka:
-
I second that Lonnie! You must have received a damn nice one if it tops the one I received!
-
I just checked my tracking and it says that it should be delivered on Friday.
I’m still wondering why it had to travel 600 miles in the wrong direction first... 🤔
I guess they figure they might as well give it the grand tour to get the most out of the fuel surcharge I paid.
Dave.
-
I got some shooting in the other day
I shot at the Classic a little, before that it has to be 6/7 years ago

I had a package from Walt when I got to the shop this morning. He had it packaged in a bullet proof PVC pipe. He sent it in a nice bow sock as well. Walt built a super nice bow, the thing is flat gorgeous! The craftsmanship is flawless and it has a lot of fine details. The center lam is white glass I believe that adds a nice touch. It even has a hole to tie a wind detector to. I shot it a little and it seems like a bow I'm gonna shoot a lot. The serving was just a tad small for my arrows and I was worried about a dry fire or I'd probably still be shooting it. I would've never guessed the brace profile would look like it does by the unstrung profile but I love it. I was thinking it was gonna be more D shaped. The thing seems like it a rocket. I can never get that out of my long bows. All in all it's one of the nicest bows I own, Thank you very much for the great bow Walt!

-
Ah crap, now I gotta think about that all day.
Maybe it was yer pet sheep talking in your head?
-
Evil, wanna thank ya for running the swap this year, you did a great job...
-
Thanks for the kind words guys. I didn't really do anything other than set some dates and ship my bow way too late
You guys made it happen. Thank you all for making this year easy. Every one of you built a beautiful bow. I really think this year's group is the one to beat, both in craftsmanship and personality. Every one of you are good dudes and I am grateful for the opportunity to keep this swap going.
-
USPS is showing my victim getting the bow on Monday.
-

Tracking shows my bow is getting close to it’s new home. It should be delivered tomorrow. 🙏🏻🤞

Travis,
Enjoy the bow, it was a pleasure to make.

Thanks Walt.
Now that I finished my bow I can finally go shoot the beauty Bird sent me! I made a deal with myself I wouldn't shoot it until I finished.
-
Tracking update shows my bow has reached the destination post office. It should be delivered today.
Dave.

Dave.

Nice Job Evil
-
Excellent job by all, no probs with batteries or sock drawers...
Seriously, great job!!
-
Thanks Max. Thanks to all of you! You made it easy.
-
Well there was a long wooden crate on my doorstep when I got home. Now I thought I did a good job when shipping bows in 3” schedule 40 PVC. I no longer think that, this box that my bow bow came in is awesome and puts my PVC to shame.
For the nitty gritty on the bow you will have to wait until tomorrow. Today is my wife’s birthday so my time is limited this evening. I will shoot it tomorrow morning, take some pictures, and show off this beautiful bow then.
-
Sounds good Walt.
-
Travis, I think that table is the prettiest thing seen on this whole thread.
-
Thanks for the compliment Lonnie. I got a great looking bow from Travis. I think all the bows were topnotch this year.
-
Dan, a friend built that for me. It is super nice. It’s a 4 inch thick ash crotch slab. He makes some super nice live edge tables. He’s a turner as well, he makes some nice bowls.
-
I set Walt's bow up this evening and put a few arrows thru her. I usually don't shoot longbows because I don't shoot them well. This bow has changed my mind. The grip is different than I'm use to but it works great. I like it.

-
Nice job Walt and 4point
-
Sorry for the delay, the wife thinks me spending the day with her was more important than anything related to bowhunting or bow building. I do not agree, but it is near midnight so you can see who won that argument.
First, a big thank you to David Chetcuti (Woodcarver2) for the exceptional bow. You Done Good…Really Good! In addition to the bow Dave made and sent some custom calls, one for deer and the other for predators. I really like the sound of the deer call; it will get a lot of use this November.
Anyway, I did manage to put several dozen arrows thru my newly received bow. The bow is dead quiet, with no hand shock, and sends my 630 grain arrows into the target with authority. It took me few arrows to get the brace height dialed in, then the arrow groups tightened up. This is a good shooting bow.
The fit and finish is outstanding, I will let the pictures speak to that. It is late, here are a few pictures to tide it over until tomorrow evening.

Very nice work, Dave...
-
I’m glad that you like the bow Walt. It was a tough one to get tillered right, but I like how it shoots.
I had enough of that canary wood left over to make one more riser for a bow for myself.
Happy shooting.
Dave.
-
Thanks Roy.
Dave.
-
Very nice bow.
-
Sweet!! Textbook tiller! Very nice job!!

Thanks guys.
Dave.

A unique bow. ✨

Bow is out for delivery. Hopefully it's still a one piece

I'll let you know. :) My mail comes late. Often after 6PM.
-
Of course, how else would we get a full day of suspense!
-
Is that the last one?

It is!
-
Yup. I've known since the day he mailed it. I get daily updates of all my incoming packages 📦.

Outstanding job gentlemen. All bows delivered by end of June.
-
That's cheating!
-
Well since the cat has been out of the bag since last week, make sure you look through the tube before tossing the bubble wrap. I shipped the rest/strike plate and string silencers unattached since you mentioned adding them is part of your tuning process. I also left the tie-on nock point on the string, but it is not glued down. You should be able to slide it up or down the string with the proper amount of force, or simply remove it if you feel so inclined.
Edit: Hopefully that was the right call.
-
-
That's cheating!
I shoulda kept my mouth shut 😒
I may not see it till tomorrow since it might arrive way past my bedtime 😴
-
It's all good, you would've figured it out regardless
-
I doubt it Evil.
LOL
-
It was a good swap. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😁
Dave.

Oooooh Roy, I had it figgered three weeks ago. :biglaugh:

What gave it away?
-
What gave it away?
The day you shipped it i was notified by my USPS Informed Delivery service.
-
But you said three weeks ago you figured me out? I'm probably just confused. Glad it made it though!
-
Nuffin like two old guys trying to fugger somepin out.
LOL
-
I was just winging it. Stirring things up. :biglaugh:
"Two Old guys"
So you was confounded too. 😖
-
The tube arrived but I may not be able to get to it tonight. Bullet proof packaging. :clapper:
BTW, I think you shipped it with the condition that it be received by an actual person per this notice.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Which they did not do. Not a problem though. We have had zero problems with porch pirates in the neighborhood.
-
I may have. I think it does that when you insure the crap out of it, but I forgot about that at the time. No worries about getting to it tonight, I just wanted to know it survived
-
up bright and early this morning and want to start the day by thanking Chris for this fine bow.
Upon closer inspection the packaging did suffer one little incident but there was absolutely no damage done. Maybe this explains why my delivery person put it on the porch and ran.

This bow shows a considerable degree of bowyer skill and I'll add that Chris obviously has a bit of the artist in his soul. Here are a few pics. These are about the best I can do on pictures and I apologize for the crappy quality.
I'm hoping Chris will jump in and describe the materials in detail. One thing that I wonder about is the red accent line here. I think I know what it is but I'll leave it to Chris to answer the question.

Continued:
Here is a four arrow group that I shot after only a few arrows downrange.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I also ran it over the chronograph. I'm not a speed chaser but I like to throw fps into the analysis of every bow I come across. This bow is not a speed demon and neither is it anywhere near slow. I consider it just right and an excellent balance of pleasing draw (no stack at my 28" draw), comfortable grip, and steady at release. This is a bow that a shooter can very quickly adapt to. I'm not the greatest shot and honestly I've been struggling lately. I'm an ASL guy when it comes to shooting. I've shot them for many years and have always shot them better than a recurve or R/D style bow. I sold off most of my Hill style bows recently since I intend to build and replace them this summer. Meanwhile I've been shooting a Samick Sage at 40# with way less than stellar results and not nearly as well as I shot this bow after only a few arrows downrange.
Here's another oddity in the comparison. This bow draws 45.56# at my 28" draw. The Samick draws 40.67# at my draw. BUT this bow Chris made feels much more comfortable in the draw and actually feels like less weight at full draw!! :dunno: Neither bow stacks. My conclusion is that the grip of this bow fits me much better than the sage which is actually a little bulky in my hand.
Here are the chrono results:
Chrono with 462 gr arrow (10.14 GPP)
164.6
166.1
167.5
165.8
164.4
------------
828.4 / 5 = 165.68 fps
Chrono with 591 gr arrow (13.03 GPP)
149.2
150.9
148
147
152.7
----------
747.8 / 5 = 149.56
And, finally, here is the full draw picture. Not very good since I had to do it with a timer. Notice, no jammies. :biglaugh:

Mike, thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you like the bow! The materials are pistachio veneers under bearpaw clear, maple cores and black phenolic from the one and only KennyM, red core tuff for the accent, and zebra with a bocote beam for the riser. Thank you for running the chronograph test! I don't have one at home so I never knew what that form was producing. It is a bit bittersweet though, because now I have the itch to push those numbers up  Shredd, maybe I can pick your brain some day?
Knowing you shoot ASL's, I tried to model the grip to match in width and wrist position (still got a little carried away with some of the details though). My apologies for the weight. Tried to get her under 45 but was getting worried it might start looking weird.
A special thank you to Bird for the shipping tube. Those are hard to come by around here and you saved me some shipping weight. Also, thanks to Kenny for the usual high quality lams and the streak-free glass. Finally, a big thank you to all the bowyers on this site. Every bow I build is a frankenbow of some portion of design and detail that I have picked up from each and every one of you. I know I have a long way to go, but I wouldn't even be where I am now without you guys!

And with that, unless anyone has any objections, I officially pronounce the 2021 TradGang Bow Swap complete!
Thank you to everyone for doing such a fabulous job. This swap pretty much ran itself and I have each and every one of you to thank for that. An amazing batch of bows from an amazing group of dudes!
I am interested in your feedback. Please feel free to leave any comments here or PM to me if you rather keep it private. I am most interested in negative (constructive) feedback so I can improve if I end up doing this again in the future (I can't fix it if I don't know something is wrong).

Thanks Dave, glad I did you proud! These guys did it all really. Hopefully we can get you back in here next year?
