Kick myself for no pick of Joe's 1st stalk of 2 boars. They sensed something wrong and moved off the road. Not spooked, but concerned.
Great start....

Morning.
How about a report on yesterdays hunt?
-
Good stuff
Tim B
-
Good hunting to all, memorable experience for sure.
-
Not my story Roy.... but its been wild. Joe got 6 stalks yesterday... I'm just waiting in the wings hanging with Joe.
Everyone else had some extravagant experiences which they can tell. I have a feeling its going to repeat today.... we are covered up with deer and rabbits at the moment.....
-
Following this, javi was made to spot-n-stalk. May the breeze be in your favor.
:coffee: :campfire: :archer2:

I guess we’ll just have to put our Charlie Lamb story telling patience hat on. 😉

Easy fellas it’s probably a teaser like last night! Cv :dunno:

Time for the morning coffee report....
Yesterday's Camp House blend brewed with a distinct aroma, a little fruit smell mixed in. Hence the red apple in the flavor description. Everyone found it interestingly good, emphasis on the word interesting. The two post were enjoyed yesterday morning, but High Noon was made again at lunch.
Fireside is one of two of Backwood's dark roasts, and we will be having it this morning to start the day...
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Let me get this Maduro lit and ill get started ...
-
:campfire:
-
We are having a ball... as I'm sure you can tell.
We'll, as I stated earlier, I've been waiting in the wings....
Joe and I saw some javies in the road 1000 yards away and we decided to do a drive n dive. We would drive by and I would dive out. As we approached the group went into the nasty to the left, and as soon as they made their move so did I.... now I was officially 'in the game'....
-
Sounds like the hunting is as good as the coffee!!!
:campfire:
-
I eased up to hurriedly and got myself too close to where the closest one went in and the wind shifted....
Next thing I hear is a lecture from the land of thorns and needles on how I'm out of place. I hang tight hoping the 2nd one is paying no attention and will ignore his buddies rant....
After a few minutes out comes this tiny ragged mop with legs....
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
As compared to his buddies that came out from across the street to join him that looked like GQ models...

Yes, from across the street. These guys weren't in the plan, but they started piling onto the road....
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
👍👍now we’re talking!! Great pictures so far. 👌
-
At 30 yards they group up and decide to head my way.... Now I'm not really hid at all, just standing behind a waist high bush hiding behind my bow and bow quiver. Luckily I'm turned perfect for their approach to shoot without adjustment if given the opportunity....
They just keep coming with no concern at all it seems zigzaging about on their journey....
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The next think I see is my fletchs disappearing into the lead javie's boiler room.... followed by an arching leap-roaring bite back . The group exploded with the victim of happenstance bolting toward my direction and dove into the nasty and crashed....

Way to go Terry! That thing has got a set of tusk!
-
Thanks guys... been busted by swirling wind twice and one stalked messed up by steers in the last hour and a half.
Not hanging with Joe thus afternoon, he's in a tower watching some lanes.
Pdk, yes, not many on this ranch but I have what few pinpointed... and sweetening them up.... I want to chase javies 1st as we don't have them at home...
Gotta run... just spotted another group...

Well done Terry!
Great pics, thanks for sharing :campfire: :archer2:

Get em. That sounds like a target rich environment. Looks like you chose the ranch well.

Usually javelina and hogs don't like to be in same area.

Congrats Terry. I love the white scales on your knife.
You're up Joe. Good luck friend.
Looking forward to the other folks stories as well

Great hunt! Thanks for taking us along. I love the knife and sheath.

-
They ran me ragged yesterday afternoon... after I posted about the wind and the steers, I got busted by the wind two more times, got busted for being to aggressive(moving to soon) twice, and got cut off by javies trying to cut javies off. Wow what an afternoon....
No cigar this am.... slept a little late as you can imagine ...
-
Ok, the lowdown on the dark roast Fireside...
The camp says... bold but not bitter, rich and creamy. "I don't like dark roasts, but thIs Is GOOD". "Just the smell if it"...

I'd like to thank Backwoods Grind again, as do the rest of the guys in camp, for proving the Java for this hunt. It's been fun having anticipation for the morning blend.

Got a hog up wind of me 35 yards or so that's been grunting for 15 minutes. Not sure what his issue is but it's not me. Wind directly in my face steady, and no way he can see me through all this thick tangle. I was sitting in a hole about to make a post when it started.
I've been standing for 10 minutes and he's still upset at something.
-
get some arrows in the air :archer2: :archer2: enjoy the last day

Joe has been covered up but no shots...

Good luck on the last day

Cool. I gotta go check that out...Carry on :-)

Wonder still if that pretty arrow did its job . . .
-
That pretty arrow definitely did it’s job!
-
This group started towards where I was sitting about 10:00 am this morning.
-
The first Javi in the group was on edge. Since I didn’t want to have to defeat several pairs of eyes, I drew back when it turned broadside at ten yards. As I hit anchor, the Javi turned straight at me and alerted. I eased down hoping it wouldn’t spoil the rest of the show. A couple of soft woof sounds and it walked off into the brush on the opposite side of the road. The rest of the group kept on coming.
-
The front two Javi came into the same opening as the edgy one. One Javi had two piglets in tow and was on the opposite side of the road from me. The other gave me a great quartering to me shot opportunity at ten yards. I drew back as smooth and slowly as I could. Before I knew it, the shot broke and pink fletching appeared right behind the shoulder. Out came a roaring growl, then the Javi spun toward and snapped at the arrow. Off he ran into the brush.
-
After fifteen minutes, I couldn’t take waiting any longer. I went to where the Javi was standing and found blood right away. A few yards from there, I saw blood where the Javi went in and just past that my arrow.
-
A few steps more, and this is what I could see.
-
I used the Primaltech longbow that Randy built for me last year. I shot a 640 grain(total weight with broadhead) Surewood shaft arrow, tipped with a 125 Ace Standard.
-
The trip has been fantastic. Thank you Terry for having me along, and to all of the other guys for the great meals. Thank you to Backwoods Grind for outstanding coffee. Thank you to Jerry (outfitter) for setting us up for great hunting and lodging.

Well guys on the back home to Arkansas now and just passed the driving duties off to Trick, so now I can maybe get yall caught up. Day 1 started off as total chaos from the moment we stepped out of the truck, had javis to the left, javies to the right and, javies behind us in the thick stuff. We spent most of the day nonstop stalking, learning the area we were in and trying to pattern these dudes. Had several close calls, some as close as 4 yds, but no clean shot opportunities. Previous post is Trick putting the sneak on some
-
Thought I might as well speak about another Sponsor's product on the trip... Thorogood Boots.
This is by no means a wear test as this was the 2nd time I wore these. 1st was one afternoon in Cohutta chasing bears, and this is a 5 day evaluation of basically brand new boots.
No break in, no hot spots, no discomfort, no fatigue. These boots offered real comfort and support during the week covering miles chasing javies. I'm real happy with them as their 1st impression is impressive. They were a pleasure to wear.....
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Now it will take a while to see how well they hold up. But I am rough on shoes.
Thanks for Sponsoring Thorogood. :campfire:
-
Day 2 started off the same way as Day 1, javies in several spots, Spent most of the morning trying to put the sneak on em with again several close calls but no good shots. The ground where we were hunting has lots of small rocks and the dirt is kinda crunchy making it difficult to be super quiet. To many thorns around to slip around in yer sock feet so about mid day we decided to change tactics. We noticed a few areas they liked to hang around in so we figured we would sit and wait.
-
Wow, if that was your "lodge" you were roughing it in style!!! :campfire: Really loving the posts, making me want to go even more, keep the stories coming.
Jason
-
Afternoon, Day 2, found a hole in the cactus and mesquite thicket about 8 feet off the road in a place where I had seen a group feed around several times and threw a few mesquite limbs on the ground in front of me for cover

-
Afternoon day 2 continued. Got settled in about 2 and about 4 heard some huffing behind me and to my left. Time to get my bow up and tab on the string, heard some hooves on rocks about the same time i caught movement out of the corner of my eye, they are about 20yds and heading my way. Time to be like molasses, it don't take much to booger these guys. Let the lead one get perfectly broad side and about 8 yds and started my draw, picked a spot and let er fly. At the end of my draw he must have caught a little movement and turned quartering toward me a bit but I saw my arrow enter just behind the elbow, he turned and ran off with my arrow hanging by the fetching, went about 30yds and

Good times spent with my son, Good group of guys, and good coffee! Thanks to everyone who made this happen. I am truly blessed.
Only downside other than everything that grows here has thorns is that my javalina broke one of my few remaining 300 spine GT blems that I don't believe they make any more! Small price to pay

Now all we need is for Smokin Joe to lecture all of us on post modern science and the double declining negative. :goldtooth:
-
Wow. Great stuff. Seems so many want throw up a post on instaham with no story or substance. Nice to see Tradgang still telling stories in detail. I remember years ago when many told stories of hunts in detail. Charlie Lamb was always the ring leader, an no need to fear 'I must click the like button for acceptance " bs.
Going to order High Noon today.
-
Thanks for the story, pics and reviews. Thanks for keeping hope alive.

I posted some of my equipment used earlier in the post. Here is a better detailed list.

Awesome hunt and pictures! Thanks for posting it up for us!

The new field of science I was talking about is Post NORMAL Science. Basically it is a field of science in which the norms of science, like evidence and proof, don't count. So it is science without actual science, but it is still called science by some who need to call it science for their own purposes. My fellow hunters found this discussion interesting and informative.
I will hold off on any further explanation of the Double Declining Negative until next year's Laredo Tusk Roundup. Once mastered, the concept explains many perplexing phenomena.
I am the only hunter in the group who did not take a shot. I was haunted by things like a flock of doves dive bombing and spooking the javelina I was about to shoot, and howling coyotes spooking my well-stalked javelina at the last second. I saw dozens each day, but had the bad-luck blues all week.
-
A note on equipment. I packed some Turtleskin snake gaiters, and I am glad I did. I ended up wearing them every day and my shins were protected from the nasty thorns that are everywhere. Every kind of plant has thorns, and lots of them.
-
Hopefully the attachment is visible. This is one of a series of ground blinds used to intercept Javvie's as they worked down travel corridors or fed on corned roads. I found that the Javvie's did not as a rule, eat as fast or as aggressive as sounders of hogs would.
Tons and tons of cactus and thorns, so slipping off the road for an ambush was not so easy and pickking out cactus spurs was a daily chore.
-
These instructions were posted in the shooting towers that we used to spot game from to go chase. The roads we used were mostly long and straight without a lot of good bends to slip upon them.
The other guys saw some big deer.
-
Sorry for not spell-checking previous two posts.
This is the result of a moving shot, at 4 yards, where the arrow was too far back. Terry went in hard to find, lost a decent amount of blood, and got scratched to hell. When I got back to trail, as we were on the other side of the ranch allowing for good recovery time, I found shaft and broadhead, but after an extensive search no recovery.
Was shooting a 60" Fedora Extreme, 3-piece longbow @ 54 lbs. Doug Fir shafts from D&M archery, 4 fletch which I really like. (First time using) 4-Blade Zwickey. Equipment Good; shooter not so good.
-
Didn't know you were shooting a Fedora ... I would have looked that over for sure...
Missing already....
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Yep, snake boots. Russell's, have to be 20 years old. Very comfortable on soles of the feet and warded off tons of thorns and cactus.

-
Frontal view- this ground blind allowed for 3 shots, very close range. 2 poor shots by me, (covered up with eyes everywhere, and that's a good an excuse as I have) and one excellent kill shot from James. We were about 25 yards from a deer feeder and a good sized travel cut-through.
Afternoons had the most action, but they could appear at anytime.
Fedora- FYI- I live about 2 hours from Mike's shop, and when he was still active bought the bow I took on this hunt and a second set of heavier limbs. Took shooting lessons as well! Must not have remembered to pick a spot; can't blame the coach for that.
-
Side View of the Ground Blind.
-
Coffee was excellent! Day Cabana Boy Terry delivered my first cup. (no repeat performance for the rest of the week.)
Fish Fry; exceptional thanks to Sam and Patrick. Educational lectures by Smoking Joe entertained as well as informed, but I needed a Thesaurus for a few of the words; he was patient.
Fine time had by all. 70' and above all week, we a few chilly mornings and some wind.
Over and out.
Bill
-
Sounds like a great time Bill, too bad you couldn't find your javie.
-
Btw... James's javie was a dandy... weighing in at 52 pounds.
-
Sounds like a blast! I enjoyed following yalls hunt.
-
It was a great time. It didn't last long enough, but for me a month would be too short. The cover was thick and thorny. The animals were plentiful. The food we prepared was excellent. And the stories told in camp never let actual facts get in the way of a good hunting tale. Everything was just as it should be in a great hunt camp. We were all very entertained by "Pher stories" and suggestions for chapters in "The Book of Seph."
If you don't know what we mean by Pher Stories or the Book of Seph, you will have to tune in next year for the next edition of LAREDO TUSK ROUNDUP.
-
Ah!.... and Joe's Italian pasta!!!
-
Well said Joe!
-
Bill and Terry, Thank you for the recognition on the Javi I took. I had no idea I was shooting at a dandy. Probably helped the result considerably!
-
Joe did you get one?
-
Rick:
No, I did not. I was cursed with some bad luck. I put the stalk on quite a few and even got to the point of getting ready to draw a couple of times, but I never got a shot. They are spooky little devils and things like a coyote howling near us could spook them -- that happened more than once. Or the dirt road getting dive bombed by doves would spook the javelinas into the brush.
I will get after them next year and have better luck, I am certain of that.
-
Wow wow wow. What a ride thanks for sharing and congratulations to all. We should all be so lucky to go on a hunt like this.
-
Well that's a bummer Joe! How many people ended up getting one? Was it three?
-
Yes, three. Sam got the first. Terry got the second. Then James got a big one.
-
Yeah, Joe had lots of adventure. Lots of stalks and set ups. It was just Murphys Law that got him. I certainly enjoyed chasing them with him. Boy did we stay busy!!!
On another note.... I used to have a coffee pot in my bathroom that I would set to go off 10 minutes before my alarm clock. I rarely heard my alarm clock go off because the coffee would Wake me up 1st. When my girls got so busy in high school and middle school I got away from that coffee pot. Due to this backwoods grind I drug the coffee pot back out....
The aroma this morning not only exploded in my bathroom but also blew up my bedroom. Wow does this stuff smells good.... nothing like mass produced coffee.
I have 3 bags of High Noon on the way....
-
Great stories guys, all around great. I sure miss these type of threads. This is much more representative of a hunting camp that instascam. I got burnt out on that in a hurry. Nothing but pics, no stories, just a flash in the pan and onto the next pic, maybe someone's lunch from yesterday, or the grocery bag their dog peed on. Its a total wast of time.
We need more group hunts like we had back 5 years ago and beyond. Great hunts, like this one, great stories, great memories, great friendships forged, and basic fun of being taken along if you weren't there.
Man I miss reading these type of threads. :campfire:
-
Man would it be great to get in on this!!!!! Wow what a hunt. Thanks for sharing!!!
-
Next years hunt is filled with repeat offenders... look for the thread on a 2nd group if you would like to go...
-
Question;
Were you guys seeing much in the way of feral pigs ???
Thanx !!!!
-
No, this ranch is hit or miss for pigs.... we were so busy chasing javies it didn't matter....
However. I was sweetening up a spot hogs were coming to.... just never hunted them....
The outfitter has other ranches available for javies and hogs... this one was 90% javies..... and we all knew that going in.
-
Great stories folks. Sounds like a blast. Congratulations for being there. Thank you for bringing a piece back to us.
-
What he said ×2
-
I'm missing it bad.... what great memories
-
Still digging out thorns here and there!
-
I'm still finding thorns to pull out of my legs. Everything there has thorns. I'm ready to go back. I loved it there.
-
Ha! .....anyone roll over at night and wince?
Love it!!!!!
-
I HATE PHONE BS!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Yes. Jerry said to shave the thorns off flush. Seems to be working.
-
Smoked BBQ javelina blackstrap and a side of Javi ribs is on the menu tonight! I’ll report the results later.
-
Looks tasty. I'd be interested to know how it tastes.
-
That was yummy! There are not any leftovers! I’m attaching the dry rub recipe for anyone who is interested.
