I thought this was a really cool bourbon glass. It's from 3Rivers,and has a broadhead made into the glass.

I like bourbon and bows, but usually keep them separate 😉

Now that's what I call an impressive collection.

Actually, I believe it's on the rocks 😁

Any Pappy Van Winkle on the shelf, Ray?
Bourbon has always been my choice but I prefer it neat. That would work in that cool glass too.
-
No Pappy Van Winkle on my shelf, BUT I just got back from accompanying my wife on a business trip of hers in Louisville and she bought me a shot of Pappy 15 year old for my birthday.

Fantastic glass of bourbon. Yes, I prefer mine neat, with just a eye dropper of water splash.
-
Ray,
You must be the official bartender of Shrewhaven. If so, there's probably a bottle or two of Basil Hayden and Booker's on that shelf!
-
A father and son team started making those types of glasses, their company is called Ben Shot. I have a few bourbon and wine glasses with a .308 round imbedded in the side. The broadhead style was not available at the time.
As far as Pappy goes, waaaay over priced. My Dad would buy it for $35 a bottle before the "craze" hit. Now it is upwards of $800 a bottle, and that is if you can even find a bottle. The family only made a limited about of cases each year, then it got a great review. and BOOM, the demand skyrocketed, yet the supply is still a small run.
Try Hillrock, Solera Aged. It is a small distillery based in Ancram, NY, about 100 miles North of NYC. The original Master Distiller was from the Maker's Mark distillery. They brought him out of retirement to start theirs up. It is a bit higher, around $100/bottle than most, and some special cask aged ones are in the $130/bottle range, but it is delicious. My favorite is their Solera Aged in a Port Wine Barrel. Best tasting ever, IMHO.
As is anything, it is your taste preferences that define what you like. But I simply cannot justify paying 30X for what I know Pappy SHOULD be selling for.
-
Shouldebt there be a song about bourbon and bows? Good stuff gentleman- and nice collection Ray!

That Pappy was a great glass of bourbon-overpriced?? YES! But it was my 60th birthday and my wife wanted to get it for me so who am I to turn down the Mrs. request. It was one of the finest glasses of bourbon I’ve ever tasted/smelled. I buy bourbon at retail. For example Elmer T Lee is one of my favorites and the last bottle I saw on the shelf was priced at $60 and it was sitting there with a bottle of Rock Hill Farms. I bought them both and gave the choice of one of the bottles to my Shrewhaven buddy Ron LaClair. He took the Rock Hill. I found one more bottle of Elmer T Lee for $65 and haven’t seen another in three years, until I was in a bourbon shop in Louisville and they were selling a bottle for $465!!!!! Yes the market price for bourbon, especially anything coming from Buffalo Trace, is out of sight.
As for Shrewhaven, Basil Hayden was for many years the bourbon of choice. Some call it a ‘beginning sipping bourbon’ because it is 80 proof and really smooth. I’m more partial to the higher proof now. With it comes more flavor and of course the warm Kentucky hug. Blantons was a preferred bottle in camp a few years ago, but it’s very hard to find a retail price bottle. Personally I’d drink a glass of Old Forester 1920 or 1910 before most bottles of Blanton’s. I also love the Maker’s Mark products, especially the wood finish series/private selection bottles.
There’s still a fair amount of good bourbon available at decent prices and after dinner at Shrewhaven Lodge we will sip on a neat poured glass with a splash of branch and a good cigar or bowl of pipe weed. Yes, bow hunting and bourbon are a wonderful thing and the current season is fast approaching and camp plans are being formed.
Cheers gentlemen and good luck in the woods (and finding good bourbon 😉)

A picture is worth a thousand words. I took this photo at Shrewhaven Lodge right after dinner and the evening conversations are starting and a couple of guys at the end cleaning up dinner dishes. Seated in the right foreground is Steve Turay/Northern Mist Bows chatting with Tim Cosgrove. Ron LaClair is talking with Randy Gufstofsen who watches over the cabin for us throughout the year. Gas lights, crackles from the fire in the wood stove and evening chatter. It’s what we look forward to on the calendar each year.
-
That's good to know about those glasses. I love stuff that's cool and quality made here. I like .308 also might have to give those guys another look and find out where they sell their stuff. When I did drink it was Jack Daniels or Jim Beam, but Smoking Joe turned me on to some better stuff. I went to the liquor store and found some Four Roses single barrel and it's plenty good for me.
I had way too much bourbon last night for any bows this morning!! :biglaugh:
-
Four Roses Select Barrel is a fine glass of bourbon!!!
-
Evan Williams has always been my go to bourbon although I've enjoyed more premium varieties when available to me.. Unfortunately a bottle of bourbon seem to "evaporate" too quickly :dunno: around my house so I only buy it on special occasions. Not much better than sitting around a camp fire with a glass of bourbon, a good cigar and good friends.
-
You can't see it but there's a bottle of Blantons on the floor under my bed. Sometimes a couple fingers helps sleep come easy
-
This is a great topic. There are quite a few great bourbons out there, like there are great bows. I'll bet I am not the only one here that likes to sample the best ones from time to time. Basil Hayden is my current favorite.
-
One end of my man cave has my archery workshop and hunting accoutrements. The other end has my ‘bar’, library and table for tastings. After a day on the range with my Shrewhaven buddies it’s fun to sample bourbon and laugh about the day on the range and who’s the better archer 😆

Many, many years ago, Maker's Mark had a Gold bourbon, complete with gold wax over the cap. It was really, really nice. They discontinued it, and supposedly replaced it with the 46, not the same in my opinion.
What i am working on right now is my own infinity bottle. I started on it a few months ago with an old crystal decanter my Dad had purchased from a Reserve Barrel about 40 years ago. I am looking forward to sampling the contents after a few more months of filling it.
Regarding Maker's Mark, I am going to be visiting the distillery next Spring. My Dad purchased an entire barrel over 25 years ago, and he never picked it up. It has since been emptied and filled again, awaiting him to get it. Since his ascension over 5 years ago, I have been trying to have it shipped, but they will not, not even to a ATF or State Liquor Authority licensed agent. I have to go there and get it myself. It will be a whole experience though. I will be able to assist in the opening of the barrel, the filling of the bottles, the dipping of the bottles in the wax, and then packing up the bottles into cases for the trip back. I am told between 15 and 20 cases.
-
BTW, for what I current imbibe in, be it scotch or bourbon, I keep them in my freezer. They will be neat, but cold when I pour them out to drink. It is a different experience, the liquor becomes viscous, close to thin pancake syrup, and as it warms in your mouth, you get multiple layers of flavor.
-
When I can get it I keep white lightning in the freezer for the same reason. Seems to make it smoother for sipping.
I was given a bottle of Blanton's a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Also a bottle with a gold key hanging on it. Don't remember the name of that one.
-
Not me I like my Bourbon neat and room temp. Try this sometime, pour your bourbon in a round snifter glass climb in a hot tub, let the glass float, then just sit back and casually sip your spirits. It gets to your head faster. OH, and a good cigar goes goods with it too.
-
I'm with Ron.
I like it neat and in a Glen Cairn glass that will warm in your hand similar to the way brandy warms in a brandy snifter.
luckily, I get to do some of the bourbon tour in about a week!

Blade and Bow. It refers to the parts of a key.

The Old Forester tour in downtown Louisville is FANTASTIC. Maker’s Mark tour is nice and a beautiful facility
-
That's it achigan and I remember reading about the blade and bow. Pretty good sippin' whiskey.
-
I reach for Knob Creek since I can't Buffalo Trace here where I live.. I always bring a some Buffalo home when I am out of state.

Thanks Ray, I'll check out Old Forester. The Makers Mark tours seem to be full while we will be there but I am a Makers Mark Ambassador for life, so, maybe they'll fit us in.
-
I have a Blade and Bow too.
It is a pretty good bourbon.

I'm a Scotch guy myself but seldom can afford the really good stuff. Glenfiddich is pretty tasty, though. I prefer it neat or with two or three drops of water only. A cool room temperature is just about right.
-
I'll pass on the Bourbon but enjoy a nice Padron cigar after dinner on special occasions. My everyday cigar is a Romeo Y Julieta.
-
Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig in that order are my preferred bourbons along with a good cigar.
-
So many great choices of spirits, my favorites in order are Angles Envy, Bulliet and Wild Turkey
-
Evan Williams , Ezra Brooks and Bullet Rye are my favorites on ice.
-
You guys are going to cost me some money, writing down all the bourbons I need to try now.
-
So hard to pick just 3.
It would have to include Blanton's, Makers 46 and Woodford reserve.
Favorite rye would have to be Basil Hayden's dark rye.
-

Here is my up-to-date bourbon collection.
If I were going to put bourbon on my personal bar to serve guests, I would get a bottle of eagles rare, Russell’s 10 year, and Woodford reserve.
If I wanted to have an upgraded Bourbon bar selection I would go for Makers Mark 46, old Forrester 1920 or 1910 and perhaps Michters 10 year old/Angels Envy or Four Roses Select Barrel.
-
Looks well tested, Ray. :saywhat:
-

By the way Brad, that’s a nice assortment. It’s not real clear, but are those Old Weller bottles??
-
yes they are. Just about empty but I have a new one of both. I should take them all down and take a proper picture someday.
-

-
Love the glasses! I want one. But if you can spend$800, let alone $130 on a bottle of f****** bourbon, then I don't know what to tell you.
-
I love both myself!! Here in SC none of the big time Bourbons make it for some reason??? For the money, I like Early Times and Evan Williams white label... both bottled in bond.
-
I would have to say this is a top notch thread. Great content.
-

They can get pricey but I don't think I've ever spent much more than $80 on a bottle. Usually just buy things when I see it on sale. When you just sip it neat, a bottle lasts a long time.
-
Agreed, most of my bottles are south of $80. Some excellent bourbon in the $45-70 range for sure. Heck, Blantons should retail for $70-75 at most.
Maker’s Mark 46; Russell’s 10 year and Woodford Reserve all retail for under $40 and are quality sipping bourbon. Old Forester 1920 is about $55 a bottle and I prefer that over most bottles of Blanton’s that I’ve tasted.
Why’s this all so important???
Because sipping on a nice glass of bourbon and perhaps smoking a really nice cigar or bowl of pipe tobacco after dinner in archery deer camp is probably one of the nicest ways to cap off a day of hunting with my buddies.
-
I agree with you guys. There isn't much better than sitting around the camp fire with a good group of friends in bow camp, sipping on a good bourbon and then crawling into a sleeping bag. Some of the ones I usually have around hunting camp or the hunting cabin are Four Roses single barrel, Elijah Craig, Bulleit Rye, Basil Hayden, Woodford Reserve or Larceny. They are relatively inexpensive and seem to be crowd favorites that most guys enjoy. I do stock some better stuff at the house!
A dozen years ago one of my sons brought a bottle of Tullamore Dew into camp one fall. It was a big hit with the guys and we kind of adopted it as our camp whiskey for toasts since then. Since that point in time I have always had a bottle and a pack of the little red solo cups in camp. When someone brings in a deer, we sit around that night and drink a toast of Tullamore to both the hunter and the animal. It has become a tradition. I carry a small flask of it in my pack on hunts for the same reason. I have been involved in a lot of guys harvesting their first deer with a bow. We recover it and they are understandably excited. We sit there for a moment to savor the experience and I will pull out that flask and toast the deer. I have had guys come up to me 7-8 years later and tell me that that cold, snowy night on the side of the mountain when we recovered their spike buck, then passed that flask of Tullamore back and forth is one of their fondest memories.
-
Good tradition! Nothing like sharing the moment of a traditional bow kill.
-
I agree and have been known to carry the same in my pack!

Irish is a gentle enough whiskey that passing it around seems enjoyable. I have a soft spot for laphroaig 12 because it helped me get through some tough times in my life with moderation because it was too expensive for me to slam back shots of, and now I have some laphroigh after every good occasion.
-
I agree, I know it's not for everyone but it is an important part of our deer camp.
Bourbon and apple pie.
Some how this is starting to sound like a good reason for some kind of bow shooting, bourbon sipping rendezvous.
-
👍👍

I’ve been building a mancave all summer with a bar on one end of it. Now sticking it. Thanks for the recommendations
-
Wow Ray. You guys must kill a lot of deer. Lol. If I waited to celebrate kills I’d be ver dry

Reading though this thread made me realize two things…..I have never had an issue finding any whiskey/bourbon (even the best stuff) and that I have another reason to feel fortunate to live in Kentucky.
FYI, my parents farm and childhood home is a few miles from Maker’s Mark as the crow flies.
-
KW,
I just did the Maker’s Mark tour and Old Forester tour when I visited Kentucky in August. Maker’s Mark is a beautiful facility and the countryside around it is beautiful and looks ‘deery’.

Here’s me with my Private Select bottle that I red wax dipped

Done that tour a few times. Always a good time.
Hard to believe but even did it as a school field trip.
Don’t think that would happen nowadays.
-
I got to do that too last month.

Hey Kentucky Wolf
Does Kentucky have a trad shoot anywhere near bourbon country?
-
KTBA’s TradFest in the spring, and a few smaller shoots.
KTBA’s stuff is over near Harrodsburg, a stones throw from most of the bourbon production.
-
Thanks KW
I'll check it out.
might be a fun way to combine two passions of mine.

For anyone that a few hours to kill at night, on Netflix is a series called Heist. One of the "heists" that they document is called "PappyGate". Very interesting look into the underbelly of some very large distilleries and the lack of security they employed.
-
No bows, but pitch dark and my camera has a good flash. On my front porch enjoying some time off and some bourbon!!! :archer:

Love it. I am in my mancave doing the same thing. Life is good. Doc
-
I built a bourbon bar in my man cave over 2020 shutdown. We had a cherry milled a few years ago so I used a 2inch thick 10.5 foot 20in wide slab for the top.
-
That’s a beautiful bar. Mine is also at the other end of the man cave from my archery workshop and gear
-
You Gents are way too sophisticated for me!!! Guess old Woodchucker is rough around the edges....
Bottle of Wild Turkey 101 (the one with the cork in it!) makes me happy!!

Beautiful bar Chefrvitale.
you'll have to give us a closer look at your collection.

It looks like last night was going to be the last warm evening of the year so I had to have one on the deck by the fire.

I visited a BIL out in Portland last week to do some Dungeness crabbing out at Netarts Bay... Showed up to a bottle of Jefferson's Voyage 23. That was very tasty with some fresh caught crab!
