I took a trip to Denmark last week and the bow from the Horsens fjord is now on display in Moesgaard Museum. 7000 years old. Some pictures. I posted the measurements in June last year.

Pretty cool thanks Bue
-
That's very cool, Bue. I love that shape.

Mark, I'm guessing those dimensions are metric. That might be my Bue bue.

That is the one Max. The pic you post have the measurements (185cm long) from the enlarged drawing. I think I also posted the measurements of the original. Forgot to say it is Elm.
-
Great photos Bue! Too bad it;s no longer on display.
-
Ken. It is on display. My bad English, I had written no instead of now. I have fixed it. :knothead:

Yes bue there were 2 of them posted, I added 1 more picture above, and yes it is Elm
Also I did a CAD drawing back when you first posted both of them

Mark would it be possible to get a copy of the CAD drawing?

In the past I did not have any luck exporting a drawing. :dunno:
All the measurements are there and was easy to draw
EDIT The real bow is the 166 bow.
It was modified for our longer draws to 185

I will try to export it for you

I will try to export it for you
I believe we use the same cad program and I haven't tried exporting but it has worked to print full size and then scan to PDF. Or print to fit page and scan that to PDF.

If all you want is a PDF then just print it straight to PDF and save the possible errors in printing and scanning. I use a virtual printer called CutePDF, it is a free download and works very well.

Max, the real bow is the 166 cm bow. The 185 cm was enlarged by Peter Svinkløv to better suit modern day archers.

Thank you bue I remember now for our longer draws, I will change it

That bow looks to be about identical to one illustrated by Baker in one of the TBBs.

Bue, do you remember if this bow has nocks cut into the tips or were they smooth where the string tied around the tips? Maybe a single side nock?
I just received a rock elm stave and I want to try to copy this very cool artifact. I'm thinking about using the elg sinew from you on it too.

The original is just under 2" wide Pat, is your stave wide enough.
Ive been wanting to make one but all I have is Osage and not quite long enough
-
Pat, there is no nocks visible, but who knows after 7 thousand years in the mud.
-
Mark, this rock elm stave is 2" or more at the widest part of the working limb and is 65 1/2" long, right at the length of the original.
Thanks, Bue. It didn't look like it had string nocks which isn't surprising and I doubt they eroded. This bow I
ll be building won't be an exact reproduction but I'll be using their design with my execution.
This stave was only cut 5/20/22 so it's not ready to work with yet. I'll get it to floor tiller stage and let it dry until late summer or fall before tillering and apply the sinew in late fall or winter.
-
Sounds good Pat. I have made these with string notches, do not care to make a 100% replica of old bows ( not newer ones either) I figure there were more than one person who made bows and they all had their personal twist to things. (Like today)

I agree, Bue and looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
