My Wife and I are sitting in the Atlanta airport waiting for our for our flight to Indianapolis. Since time permit, I thought that I might give some details about our last week taking our longbows to South Africa.
First, I can’t say enough about Sofala Safaris. Louis along with his family and crew run an unbelievably top notch outfit so well suited d to the tradbow crowd that I couldn’t do it justice here. But, I will say that he looks especially forward to hosting traditional archers although the operation is open to every type of hunter. Sofala understand how important the hunting experience is to the Trad group. Seriously, I would invite anyone even remotely interested in hunting Africa to reach out to us. There are many good outfits in South Africa, but we can tell you why you’re going to want to go to Sofala.
Second, Scott Mitchell of Timberhawk Bows built us two wonderful Odyssey longbows for our trip. Mine was #59 and my Wife’s #49. The people at Sofala couldn’t believe just how quiet we had them shooting while maintaining good speed. Plus the takedown feature allowed us to back them easily.
Our arrows were made with larch shafts and grizzly two blades from 3 Rivers. Mine weighed 620gr and hers were 610gr.
We were able to pack everything together into two large duffels. We even took backup bows and an arrow case inside of each duffel bag. Again anyone wanting more info on how to pack can reach out to either of us anytime.
Have to say that both South Africa and Sofala Safaris way exceeded expectations. Got to give a shout to Mike Yancey for his endorsement of Sofala to me a year ago.
Finally, I want to say that I am very proud of my wife becoming the first female traditional archer to take an animal at Sofala with her wildebeest. I was proud of my Impala ram too, but her success was more than icing on the cake

Some nice animals there. Congratulations. I'm headed there with Mike Sept 1st and it's nice to see a good report.
Was animal numbers and movement good? I'm hoping to take a couple of extras along with what the package is.
-
We had some cool weather at the start of the week. It made things a little slow at first. Honestly, the slow start didn’t bother us. Your experience there will outweigh any slow periods. By slow, I mean they won’t just walk in on you, but you will still have shots. Plus when the weather improves, you will see more game than you can imagine.
Mike is the real deal. You are going to see why he speaks so highly of them. I know my Wife and I have joined the group of people who speak so highly of Sofala.
You are going to have an unbelievable experience. Can’t wait to hear of your trip
-
Oh I understand that.
-
This was on the Dark Continent forum and I thought ya'll might like to see it over here..... :campfire:
-
Kirk, you forgot to mention the food...... :goldtooth:
-
What about electricity? Do I need a converter?
-
We used a type M converter.
Terry, absolutely forgot to mention the food. It is amazing. You won’t go hungry. We actually put a little weight on.
-
I'm having some knee injections and cervical injections done in the next four weeks so I'm hoping to be able walk enough to work some of that off!
-
Beautiful Animals!! This is definitely a hunt I will do sometime.

Terry knows, he's been there with me! It is amazing and will be even better this because Louis's brother Marinus is going to be there cooking. He is amazing!!

Congrats on your critters!!!!

Very nice. Thanks for sharing. Nice pics. I gotta go at some point.... Hopefully I live long enough....
-
I had given up on ever going. Didn't figure I would ever get another chance and couldn't afford it in the past when I had chances.
Then Mike put up that group hunt post. Dunno why but just had something saying this is it.
Good business year going so I have the extra funds, timing with other planned hunts around it was right . . .
I'm excited and nervous and . . . .
Thanx Mike!!!
-
That’s awesome. I’m so glad Terry brought it over to PowWow :campfire: Those are some beautiful animals in some beautiful country.
Congratulations & Well Done. :clapper:
I made it to Namibia last year and I’m already considering when I can make it back…
-
Very cool, this is on my short list!
-
Being honest, there are many good hunting operations in Africa. BUT, you can’t go wrong with Sofala. It is run by an honest man of outstanding character and faith.
Seriously, those going with Mike are in for an unbelievable adventure. Those considering going to Africa owe it to themselves to check with Sofala.
-
For those heading to Sofala for the first time, the land behind us is where some of where you will be hunting.
I can’t believe that my wife and I waited until our late fifties to make this trip. But better late than never.
-
Thanks for pulling this over to PowWow Terry! Beautiful animals! I love my Wildebeest and Impala, but i could chase Warthogs all day long! The Limpopo province is some beautiful country! Thanks for sharing!
-
Yeah Randy, I WISH they would have let me chase the hogs, I don't think they have a clue as to how we hunt them here. I've I could have gotten out of that tower blind for two days after I killed my impala I had them pegged dead to right.
They would come beside of of the huge water reservoir tanks to a certain spot to stop and survey they watering trough. Just barely around the crest of the reservoir tanks was the perfect bush that was now behind them and not of their concern. It was a perfect set up, and all I could is watch over and over.
-
That's on my list . . .
-
I decided to pass on a nice warthog on our last day there. I was hoping for a zebra that never showed that day although I had seen them earlier in the week. It was a difficult pass. The warthog actually had a nice golf ball size black patch right over the heart. Plus, it was perfectly broadside with its front legs on a stone and head down drinking. It was situated so that there was very little chance of that dreaded “ducking” scenario. But I wanted the zebra that day.
Terry, I don’t think they aren’t as restrictive on how you hunt any longer. They have a gentleman coming from Europe that doesn’t want to shoot from a blind or elevated at all. They are going to try to accommodate him
-
Kirk, no worries. I never mentioned it to Louis, but when I did to my guide twice he really didn't want to even reply.
I had a blast regardless.
-
Peter Juulsgaard. Seems like an interesting guy. Can shoot a bow for sure. Watched a couple of his YouTube videos.
I'm sure he'll post something on it after his hunt.
-
I messaged Peter Juulsgaard after he posted his video and plans to hunt Africa.
He told me he also booked a hunt in September with Sofalas! Dude can definitely shoot, you might get a chance to visit with him Gary.
Looking forward to hearing about y’all’s adventure!

We wish we were going back in September with you guys. If you have time and feel like really getting into the brush ask Louis about their largest baobab tree.
-
We used a type M converter.
Terry, absolutely forgot to mention the food. It is amazing. You won’t go hungry. We actually put a little weight on.
This type?
-
Yes.
This is the one that we used. Now, I will say that we stayed in the chalet. I don’t know whether an adapter is already available in the house.
-
Fabulous! Thanks for sharing all. :campfire:
-
Thanks for sharing. I am headed to South Africa in 2024 for Kudu and Eland so always enjoy seeing posts like this one.
-
Went to YouTube and watched a couple of vids, one Mike made of a trip over there. Actually a pretty professional production.
Looked like I expected however them critters is jumpy. Got me worried now.😃

Cook, did ya see this one?

AIM LOW on Impala
-
Be patient. Wait for the close shot and keep your focus low right up the leg. Truthfully, straight up the back of the near leg and no more than 1/4th up worked for me. The bigger animals are not quite as fast
Keep your shots close and get your bow shooting as quiet as you can.

AIM LOW on Impala
I have now! They are as bad as a hill country doe at a feeder for reacting to the string drop. So I guess I'll work on aiming low. :archer2:
-
Impala and warthogs will both jump the string on you. Warthogs are nothing like the feral pigs I've killed - I shot my big warthog while he was on his front knees drinking at less than 10 yards and he started to roll away from the arrow even that close while drinking.

I totally agree, my big warthog was closer to 17-18 yards and it was drinking. Dropped a fuzz and started to wheel… Impact a fuzz high but drove up in the goodies and he burned it out of there. I’m pretty sure most everything there has a propensity to move, just the larger animals are a little slower. I have video of everything and I assure you every animal’s muscles sprung for action whether they made progress or not… I shoot heavy arrows and a quiet bow. :campfire:
-
That’s a good video Mike!!!! I could go over there and just shoot impalas and warthogs and have a blast!!!!!! I’ve been 4 times, and every trip I have shot at least one critter I never planned on.
Impala and warties are jumpy for sure!!!!!

I have two flint tipped arrows loaded in my arrow box for September and if another Impala gets close I will let it fly.
-
I'd like to take one or two of them myself.

We are already planning our return.

I hear tell that's one of the dangers of going.
Going back!
-
Mike, I finally got a chance to watch that video. Really nice representation of Sofala and the African experience. Brought back many memories.
I got a chuckle out of the guide saying "one shot" after the warthog got perfectly skeward. :smileystooges:

I think the Gemsbok is one of the most beautiful animals in Africa. They are super tough and a real trophy with Primitive or Traditional bow's.
-
I absolutely agree Mike. The gemsbok both really fascinated and mesmerized me.
I will add that the 3rd afternoon when the 2 zebras walked in was just crazy to see. I DEFINITELY knew I was in Africa then!!!
-
Hopefully I will get chance at one.
-
A coveted experience no matter how many times one is fortunate enough to partake.
-
Here is one of the Warthogs that I took out there. I painted it when I got it back home.

Fletching the last few arrows for the trip. Got some VPAs on some woods as well. Hoping to be fully packed, except for bows, by this weekend.
-
Good luck to all of you guys! Prayers for safe travels over and back and while you are there. Shoot straight and i look forward to seeing some pics and "hear" some stories!

The Miracle Hour is a fabulous vid for sure ! :campfire:

Things can happen quickly there. My wife took her wildebeest out of a group of five. Only the one that she shot ran off. So, we traded places very quietly allowing me to shoot mine. We took both wildebeest in less than a minute from the same blind.
I remember packing too. We were able to pack everything for both of us into just two duffels and a single carry on for each of us. We each had a backup bow in the others duffel as well as half our arrows
-
Beautiful Nyala Mike! i know you guys are starting to get antsy to leave!
-
Serious question. I know phones take decent video. Current phone has a decent set up on it. Even night vision.
Is it work taking a compact tripod and my Sony Handy cam? The tripod also will hold a phone to video or still pic with.
-
Here we go! The next arrow that I shoot will be at a 3D Warthog target in South Africa in camp at Sofala the morning before the first hunt. Closing the shop this afternoon and getting ready to go tomorrow after we fill up my bear bait here in Arkansas to be ready and hunt the weekend after we get back from this hunt.

You guys enjoy yourselves!! Mike, tell Louis that Kirk and Sheila say “hello.” We still are trying to work our next trip in to our future plans.
-
Easy trip booked again this year like it used to always be before they tried to shut the world down. I had a moose hunt booked in Canada for over two years but liberal Canada would rather break their outfitters with unrealistic travel demands and closures so I'm going back to Africa again this year with NO RESTRICTIONS!
Last year everyone was afraid to go, we went. 30 plus hours both ways with mask but NO SHOTS REQUIRED only a negative test within 72 hours both ways. This year no problem and we will see more animals in a day that most in several years.
Foods not too bad either!

Here's a trip from a couple of years ago.

We got very lucky. They removed all restrictions just before we took off.
-
Good Providence Mike and all who are going…
 :campfire:
-
Safe travels there and back guys! Shoot straight and good luck!
-
Wheels up in 48 hours. Well technically 47.
-
If you’re interested, Mike and the group are doing pretty well at Sofala. You can visit Sofala on Facebook and see some of their success.
-
It is going fairly well. A bit slow overall but everyone has had opportunities and the walk in cooler is filling up. Still time to shed more blood and make more memories. I'm sure Mike will post a thread upon return . Pretty sure he doesn't do TG from his phone.
-
Don't do fbook, not going to do fbook, not communist. Both are sponsors here so I'll wait.
-
TOO Funny Charles.... I don't do face book either... well, rarely that is.
I'm anxiously waiting also!!!
-
:campfire: :coffee: :campfire:
-
I'm not on the book of faces either but outfitters have to be to be competitive I guess. Still, a very good group to be here with and the staff have been fantastic. It will make a good thread I hope.
One day left. Send a thought or two for good luck our way. Up in five and a half hours so good night and God bless.
-
I took a peak on Facebook and it looks like you guys will have a good hunting thread to share!
-
I hope they post here also. I'm not bowing down to big tech.
-
As I stated Mike will post up. I have access to here but as he was the guy who got this opportunity for us and stuff out of respect I feel he deserves to have the lead on this as well.
Plus the PHs take the pictures and not all of us have access to all the pics. So if you want to see all of them you may have to visit the outfitter's page. I'm not sure if all of the hunters are on TG or not.
That said they are all people I'd share a camp with again.
-
Cook, I got plenty of pics taken by the staff on my camera. I must have 500 pics, most of what I took. Did something change? Are you not allowed to take pics? Are they not allowed to use your camera to take your pic? That sounds bizarre if so.
-
I'd say thats a good plan Gary. Then they can tell the story along with it.
-
Cook, you took me completely wrong. I never implied that you steal anyone's thunder. Not sure how you got the idea that I was talking about other hunters pics. Ive never suggested that here since we started in 03, not my style. I'll bow out now.

No sir that wasn't my intention or thought from you. You said nothing I took personal. Just trying to explain my reasoning for not posting a bunch of stuff yet. I'm not the most socially capable individual. I don't always put things the way I mean them. Apologies.
Also found out not all are TG members.
We are back in Atlanta though.
