Speak up.
Tell us why you shoot the PL Lonbow if you would so please. And, show pic if you can.
Thanks

Well I just got a few months ago. It's super smooth too. After I kill me a buck with my Toelke Whistler then it's time to let the Widow eat. I'll probably be taking it with me to NC in a week or so....

Its accurate , forgiving, and whisper quite.
It’s arrow speed is on par with my PSA. They are the same weight and draw length. I don’t have a chronograph but I can’t tell a difference in them.
I can switch back and forth between the PLX and PSA….with no issues, no adjustments, etc.
The takedown system is rock solid and super simple.
It’s a gorgeous. A flawless work of craftsmanship. It’s backed by Black Widows reputation and excellent customer service.
I’ll get some pic posted later if I get a chance.

Beautiful, just beautiful. :readit:
-
My wife hasn’t gotten jealous of the bow yet. :biglaugh:
Having a pretty bow gives you some eye candy to look at when nothing is moving in the woods.
My PSA was a straight forward utilitarian “Autumn Oak”. The craftsmanship is top notch. There is a long story behind this but she is now sporting diamondback skins and is quite the looker now too.
-
Don’t have one now but have owned several. I shoot recurves better than longbows but the PLs shot better for me than any longbow I’ve shot. Seemed plenty fast and forgiving.
-
Started shooting PLs in 2005. They are very forgiving built like a tank, quiet and shoot pretty much the same for me as my PTF recurve. When my bow shoulder started acting up in 2017, I had Widow take a few pounds off of my PLIII and my PLV. In 2020 I sold them both as my doc has limited me to no more than 45#. I'm getting on the list for a new PLIII that will be 43#-45# at my draw length. I've own over a dozen (maybe closer to 2 dozen) other longbows, but the PL shoots the best for me.
I hate to admit to such a stupid mistake, but in Colorado on and Elk hunt in 2013, I laid my PL with the upper limb tip against my truck against my license plate and the lower limb tip on the ground. My buddy and I were straightening up camp and a thunderstorm rolled in. Wind was blowing pretty hard, so I jumped in the truck to back it away from the treeline as there were limbs being blown down from the dead pines. I threw it in reverse and truck wouldn't move backwards more than a few inches before the tires would spin. I was just putting it in to 4WD when my buddy yelled that I was backing over my bow! I pulled forward and he grabbed the bow and then I moved the truck. We got in the tent, and I looked the bow over. Other than mud, the bow looked fine. After the storm moved through, I grabbed a couple of judo points and (carefully) started shooting the bow, thinking it would come apart, but it shot just fine. As a matter of fact, it was one of the bows I had reduced in weight 4 years later. Did I mention PLs are built like a tank!
-
I’m kind of in the same boat as sdorton. I recently bought a camo PLX from the classifieds here, and have not had much time to get it dialed in. As soon as I get one with my Whip, I think the PLX will be up next…
-
OK, just checked them out. What exactly is a Toby grip?
-
Brandon that’s the finest Widow I ever saw. They look like solid bows and I’ve heard they are quick!
-
Russell Southerland, the Toby grip has a bit more of a "palm swell". It's a bit more of a fuller/thicker grip. I prefer the standard, but I have small hands
-
I’ve always considered the PL to be “the king of bows”. Although I own/ed many bows and often shoot other types of I could only have one it would be the pl. I find it to be flawlessly built from a great company with great people, it’s super forgiving, well balanced, quick, and quiet. It’s also just a very easy bow to own and transport with an easy t/d system if that’s your thing. I have 2, a 64” 56# tulipwood t/d and a recently traded for 64” 49# greenleaf with carbon limbs. Both have the Toby grip and beaver tail wrap. The picture is of the carbon model.
-
I bought the stock Graybark PL as my first new Widow. It’s bulletproof, forgiving( boy do I need that!) and is relatively light. I had an MA3 but it was too heavy physical weight, not draw weight, for extended shooting sessions. So my son got it. I chose the gray over an autumn oak for its look in the woods where I hunt from ground blinds.
-
Thanks Mike.
-
The Black Widow PL is my favorite bow. Ken Beck let me offer my thoughts when he designed it and I shot and hunted with early prototypes. I started shooting the carbon limbs this year and I like them even better. It was my dad's favorite bow as well. I've hunted some of the biggest, smallest and hardest animals with them.

Thanks. I always wanted a PLX…so pulling the trigger on one was an easy decision (when I had the spare money). Picking and settling on woods was the toughest decisions. Roger sent me pics of lams to look over. Picked out some highly figured dark bocote. I think Roger had a recurve in mind for them, but I loved them. Beautiful…and some natural camouflage.
-
My interest in PL’s grew a lot after talking with guys from here who praised them.
Guys like Ben Maher, Frasettor, Denny Sturgis.
I really like the grip. Mine is the Toby grip. I like the fact that when I pick it up I don’t have to fool around to get the grip “right”. When I pick it up its just there every time. Also no hand shock at least to me. The weight of the bow seems to be about right, very stable.
Mine is 50@30, and 64”. It doesn’t feel like a 64” bow, it feels “handy”.
Here it is black and white ebony, I think it’s a looker. This one is quiet and I have left it the way I got it. But when get a new string I will reduce it to one set of silencers.
-
Can’t get a better endorsement than ol Denny’s post! We all seen his adventures and animals he has taken over the years with his.
-
Check out these guys also. I believe this is the largest barebow event in the world. They are competing against some heavy risered target longbows to boot I believe.
-
Denny, I'm not sure if ole Terry could even pull back a 50# Black Widow longbow:)
-
Ron La Clair isn't here for poetry so I'll do my best.
Boy oh boy, here comes Roy and he's acting so coy; but he brings no joy like a Christmas toy. He just likes to get Terry all riled up! 😀
-
I enjoy shooting my Widow PLXS because in my option they are “bulletproof “. Every time I pick one up , it just feels comfortable. I have been shooting them for years .

Pretty good Denny......... AND too dang funny!!!

This thread is going to cost me some money!!!
-
I've admired the PL and PSR. Even spoke with BW. They just won't cut the shelf an eighth inch past center or I'd have one.
-
Kind of bored on election night so far. Here’s another shot of my black and white ebony PLX.
-
For those who have a standard limb and a carbon limb what is the difference in your opinion?
-
I've heard nothing but great things about them, and we all know Black Widow is a GREAT company. Really enjoying this thread.
-

Wanted to ask that question to Denny?
Interested… didn’t know if the difference was enough to make me add a carbon PLX to my household.
-

Here's one answer....
I started shooting the carbon limbs this year and I like them even better. .
-
Black Widow says the carbon limb longbows are 3-5' a second faster. I got around 8' with my informal (no hooter shooter) testing. Was also using heavier 62" bows to compare.
The mass weight is quite a bit less which may account for the increased limb speed.
I always thought PLs had little hand shock and vibration, but the carbon seems even less in my experience.
Some folks might not like the look as much as the wood and exotic veneers though. Much to Toby's chagrin, I have rattle canned an exotic PLX a time or two. 😀

Any effect on tuning?
-
I had to drop 50 grains of point weight to get a perfect tune with the carbon limbs.
-
Talking me into a carbon PLX …sounds expensive…new arrows too. :biglaugh:

Denny, how many grains were you shooting before?
-
I was shooting a 175 grain broadhead with total arrow weight of around 570.
-
A PLIII was my first trad bow. I went with the 66" length as Roger told me that it would be much smoother draw at my draw length (29). I cannot be happier with it!

Denny - those Europeans are crazy good shooters …
These guys are amazing eh !
They are a big deal in Europe …. They sure could be shooting those long heavy risered longbows out there …. But they choose Widows ! (Love the fact that they still shoot split too - gives me hope 😎😎😎
-
I picked up a PL III earlier this year on the used market. Autumn Oak 62", 58# @ 28". At my DL of 27" I'm pulling about 55#. It shoots beautifully, quiet, fast and smooth.
I was intrigued when I read that someone had Black Widow reduce the draw weight on an existing bow. My question is - do they still do this and is it expensive?
I can shoot this bow just fine at my DL, but if I could reduce the draw weight closer to 50# I would be stoked.

Mike, the PL III that I bought earlier this year (see my post above) was made for you in August 2006! Small world huh?
Was this bow one of the bows that you had Black Widow reduce the draw weight on?
-
Maclean-I believe that it has been reduced. Widow keeps fantastic records on their bows. If you called Widow with the serial number, they could tell you for sure. I am glad that you have my old bow and that it is working well for you!
-
Thanks Mike! It's the favorite of the 5 different longbows that I currently own. And thanks for your part in taking care of this bow, it's still in perfect condition.
-
So I ordered my first after seeing Denny’s in MBB 111….
I have bought 4 more since .
I actually just got home from shooting mine at the 3D Nationals
Fast, amazing build quality and very forgiving …..
-
I do Lice my Widow PL’s !!!
-
Indeed I do
-
Nice Ben!!! Thanks for sharing.

This thread has been fantastic, and potentially expensive!
I've already got a few nice trad bows, have just bought myself a shiny new compound to help cull critters, and before it's even arrived I've been speaking with an online friend about his PLX and now he's going to send it to me to try. How I'll manage to NOT buy it is beyond me.

Yeah Wilderlife, you're doomed!
-
PL update. I sent my PL III (see above posts) back to Black Widow to reduce the draw weight. It started life as a 58# @ 28, came back to me as a 53# @ 28. They completely refinished the bow and I had them put on the beavertail wrap.
Wow, what an amazing transformation! It's like a new bow and the handle wrap is a huge improvement.
It has to be said, the folks at Black Widow are second to none. I've rarely had a more positive and rewarding experience. They exceeded expectations at every opportunity. Toby said they could maybe take 3 pounds off and gave me 5. Said it would take 3 to 4 weeks and it took 9 days. And they're just so danged nice to work with.
Come September, this bow will be in my hands as I chase my beloved wapiti.
-
Well I only own three bows, but they are each and every one a 66" Blackwidow PLX take-down longbow.
Why a Blackwidow PL longbow? They sit nice in my hand, they shoot extremely well, they hit where I look, they are smooth and quiet, they are way more than quick enough with the heavy wooden arrows I shoot, and to me, they simply look fantastic.
Just shooting them puts a smile on my face.
I can't ask much more than that.
With one of my Blackwidow PLX longbows and heavy wooden arrows, I have taken most things we have on offer here in Australia, from Bunnies to Buffalo.
And, dealing with the guys there in Nixa Missouri is a pleasure. I have found their service to be simply outstanding. Nothing but good things to say about their bows, their people, and the way they do business.

Lex, I'm so impressed with mine that I'm going to order a new PLX.
The only thing I haven't decided on yet is whether to get a takedown or 1 piece.
All of my bows are 1 piece longbows, I've never had a takedown.
What can you tell me about Black Widow's PL takedown system?
-
Hey Ben,
What are the weight ranges on your PL’s?
-
I have 3 that are 64" 50# @ 29" and one 66" that is 41#

Their takedown system is rock solid. There is a video of black widow trying to destroy the takedown system with a press.
The system is simple…idiot proof. No tools to use. No parts to lose. No alignment issues.
The system is dead quite. No noise. No vibrations.
It feels exactly the same as a one piece. Feels the same in the hand. Feels the same when shot.
-
Thanks KW!

Thats almost exactly as I would have replied.

I don't have any close up pics of the bow, but it's a PL 3 td, with diamondback skins. Looks awesome, shoots better and is built like a tank. Got it last fall the day I left for a bear hunt. Had immediately success that carried over to this year. Love it

Colorado elk PL t/d 55# 60" Great shooting bow and about as bullet proof as a bow can be.

Nice Guys!

Maine Black Bear taken on a hunt with Roger and Toby from Black Widow, with my PLX with Osage Limbs and Cocobolo riser. 64", 44@28. Smooth shooting and built like a tank.

Shot this day after Christmas 8-point with my new carbon PL.

I think a couple "Brothers of the bow" are gonna be po'ed when they find you been setting one of there stands ..... :biglaugh:
Fine "BULL" Denny !
Have a question for you .... .
It appears your PL's have a slightly different , more refined shelf/rest/grip ....or is this simply an optical due to the pictures ?(one's posted on this thread)
I personally like smaller narrow shelfs for clearance , and was curious if these are special order of stock offerings .
Thanks in advance ....great looking bows everyone & Congrats on a fine Christmas Bull Denny .... :clapper:
-
Ralph, my bows are stock shelf and standard grip, nothing custom. Widow has the shelf down to a science providing max clearance.
-
Thanks for the reply Denny .
Must just be an optical the way the bows are positioned in the picture ?
Fine looking bows . I like charcoal risers , but that Green-Leaf (emerald green;) is pretty nice looking ....
Thanks for the great pictures and info everyone :clapper:

I love my PLX. It’s been a great bow. Easy to point and shoot for me. I’d always wanted one and finally got one last fall in 2021. Certainly has lived up to my expectations. Haven’t done worth a flip bow hunting big game this fall and now winter, but I did well last year with it!

Bocote limbs, correct?

Yes, bocote! Which is my favorite. Took a couple snow pictures today.

I'm trying to decide between bocote and cocobolo when ordering a new PLX. It's a tough decision ...
-
Coco is my second favorite for tropical woods. I’ve had some that looked sweet with coco and zebra wood, but that was on a recurve. Myrtle makes some cool veneers too for domestic wood.
-
Really nice pics varmint! It's a take down as well?
-
Yes, it’s a takedown.

If you have any dubs about a PL look at this60# and 27 yards on the ground. Marco Olivi traditional bowhunter

The Pl is a fine longbow. I used to own several myself before I started building bows.
A finer group of guys you will never meet... but don't tell them I said that! :biglaugh:
