Title: What arrows do you Black Widow shooters like?
Post by: Boondocks on December 06, 2022, 10:03:36 PM
Getting a 62” PSA-X, 50lbs at 30.5”. Hunting whitetail. What arrow do y’all prefer?  I know it varies but I don’t want to mess up a pricey bow when it comes down to the “pointy part”. Where would y’all start. Thanks!

Shaft material is a highly personal choice. Wood, aluminum and carbon, when properly tuned, will all shoot well with your bow. They all have their pros and cons, so it's up to you to decide where durability, cost and aesthetics shake out in your personal hierarchy.
I prefer woodies myself, Surewood Dougfir to be specific.

Black Eagle Carnivore 300....would be a viable selection

Estimated Arrow:

31 11/16" .....200 gn pt...Std  18gn insert...10.2 gpp...20% FOC...510 grains...

Note: out of my well bare shaft tuned PMA 40@28 (my actual draw)....BE Carnivore 400....32 2/8"...145 gn point

Still shooting aluminums.  They have never let me down.... 2216's and 2219's  For your specs I think a good starting point might be a 2117.

I'm used to shooting longbows cut before center, so I was very surprised at how stiff of an arrow my PSA wanted.  I kind of knew this in advance as the PSA is cut 3/16" past center.  My Toelke Whip likes 700 and 800 spine arrows--- it's 42#.  My Widow, by contrast is 40# and tuned beautifully with 500 spine arrows.  I like an arrow at least 9.5 grains per pound and I believe Widow makes a gpp recommendation on their catalog--- it may be 10-12 grains and on up.  I've learned the hard way (buying tooany arrows over the years) to have in mind what you'd like to have as finished length and total weight and then try a couple spines to see what will tune close to your target weight/length.  At your draw I'd guess starting at 340 spine may get you in the ballpark, but too many dynamics for anyone to say for sure.  Just something you'll work out through careful tuning.

I’m shooting 2016s with a 175 grain point out of my 52lb PCH and they fly great. I also have shot my gold tip blem 600s with a 50 grain insert and 175 grain point. They also shoot well.

With MY draw at 28” 2016 works, with a little longer shaft and more tip weight 2117 works.

With wood (Surewoods) 60/65, 65/70.  But again that is at my draw of 28”.

The best advice I can give you (on all things regarding Black Widow recurves) is listen to Beemann. He has a ton of real world experience with BW, plus your draw length and his appear to be similar.

Gold Tip 400's, Aluminum 2219, 2315, Woods 70-75, 75-80 spines will all work.

Carbon express heritage….but since they don’t make those anymore….Black Eagle vintage.

For wood…I run everything from P.O. cedar, to Douglas Fir, to Hickory and a bunch of others. I have a special place in my heart for P.O. cedar…..the one that brought me to the dance but my favorite is hickory. However hickory is hard to source.
