Now another group javies have moved up to the buffet a little further down the line. Too many to keep up with a count...
-
Just shoot into the herd, ya might hit one.
-
Nah Roy, I like to sneak up close so I can shoot the one with the most eyelashes. :saywhat:
-
On my way...

There're always losing a tag.
#2 this morning was taken by a rookie that's never seen a javie or a hog.
He's ecstatic at the moment.... :jumper: :jumper: :jumper:

Off to a good start!!

We highly suspected this morning that there might be another special javie in the area...
That was confirmed this afternoon...
Psycho has a brother...
His name is Mr Schizo Phrenic. :o
-
Confirmed also, just now that 3 tags have lost on day 1.
-
Ok, one hunter has tagged out on Javie already.

-
Way to go guys! Joe, after both weeks, Javelina will tremble at the sound of your name, just like all those trout do.
-
Yeah Trick, what else did you see?
RI Red, I've coined a new phrase...
Joe, as always, has leveled Terrorfivacation on the javalina species.
:scared: :scared: :scared:
-
A few Javies also!
-
Trick, it's a dead one that was responsible for the jaw chomping event.
-
Yeah, I've seen some teeth popping up close! No place for your hands for sure
-
We had breakfast sausage this morning made from the monster javelina I got in week one. It was great. A big shout out to Ruiz Custom Meats here in Laredo for the quick turnaround making sausage.

Thanks for all the pics, thats some nasty look'n brush ... how are the ticks and chiggers, years ago when I use to hunt down there for javies I got eaten up by bugs and the bites lasted a long time. :archer2:
-
No chiggers, and only a few ticks, most of which you get from guttin n skinnin.
-
Smokin Joe and LTR Squad… I’m planning to cook or smoke at least half if not all of my Week#1 Javelina for Super Bowl Sunday. I seen reference to the breakfast sausage. Any recommendations? James did the Apple cider vinegar which was good. I’m up for any ideas and I’ll post the results :campfire:
Carnitas, brine, stuffed sausage.? I’ve got a smoker, instant pot, grill, grinder, stuffer… :goldtooth: Right now it’s 4 quarters bone in and Backstraps. Let the ideas roll in……… :saywhat:  :clapper: :campfire:

Last year I made jalepeno cheese summer sausage that was really good, this year I got hot pan sausage made. Just got a couple of pieces out of the skillet and it is really good also.

BTW, those *attacks* obviously were not attacks, but simply javies that had no clue the hunter was there and got drilled. They were just choosing their escape route, and the hunter was in the way...

After the 1st week of directing traffic and trying to make sure Joe got a Javie before I got serious. I was ticked to have been there when Joe killed the biggest Javies, as story told on Invasion 1, and to have been able to track it for him. I made a couple of stalks that week, on on Psycho, and another on a group, but neither worked out.
So, on Invasion 2 I finally got out and got serious. I stalked up on Psycho, but he played his hand as usual early that morning, and he just disappeared at usual into the land of spikes and thorns for seemingly no reason....
-
Then I got on a sounder of 9 with the lead javie' being well above average. They were coming to me just as Psycho was, and I again lopped off a large chunk of distance and found a great place to dig in when they reached about a 40 yard distance....
-
:campfire:
-
The spot I picked to dive into only had one option to shoot. Either they stopped in one exact place or no shot whatsoever. I had to do something and do it fast...
So. I pulled a 'duck under - go behind ", and popped out in an area I could see from my see from my severely limited hide out....
This spot was much better and had a much better approach wall to let them pass by about 5 feet of perpendicular. That set up, as I have found for most game animals on an approach trail, to be best. This setup allows the eyes of the 1st animal to pass while the 2nd is oblivious due to the wall, allowing the ability to draw undetected....
-
:coffee: :campfire: coffee pot is on and campfire is warm, waiting for the rest of the story…..
Jason
-
Once I was satisfied with the exact spot I wanted to stand, and made sure the ground was prepared for silence, I just relaxed until I hear them crunching...
Well, it didn't take long for them to audibly announce their presents and I began to direct my attention to the 1st opening and started aiming. Yes, aiming. I aim before I draw the bow most times, and with this scenario, I focus on the 1st window and see the animal in my mind's eye and start aiming....
-
As the leader was crunching straight in line with my 'wall', my bow was already raised, and tension was on the string. Being that there were nine of them, the leader was being rushed a little to stay the leader, so the window quickly opened, and I shut it just as quick....
Hmmm, why is my arrow this close to my ambush local?
Fletch top center...
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Why was it so close? Because this was the escape route chosen...

What is that clacking sound I hear on the video? Could it be a javelina?
-
So Kodak Fan was a 1st time LTR hunter and not far away, just around the other side of the pond, so I scurried around and asked him if he wanted in on the fun...
So two minutes later I dove into the land of spikes and daggers hot on the trail. This went very fast as the trail was showing a lot of crimson. Then I thought I heard something that I'd heard before and stopped to see if it was what I thought it was. Silence. After no reoccurance, I proceeded on but slower this time. All of a sudden, Jim, who was looking under the very short canopy while kneeling on the sendero, said he saw my javie walking at the 2 pm direction of my high noon direction. I paused for a moment to see what else he might see.
Nothing new transpired, and I wasn't about to leave my blood trail, so proceeded on just a couple of yards and I heard that sound again definitely confirming earlier thought. That it was not the javie Jim saw to the right of me.
Please remember to let the clips load a bit before clicking play....
My javie was politely asking me to leave... from only 10 yards away.....
https://www.tradgang.com/upload/terry/20230203_175329.mp4
Still at 10 yards.....
https://www.tradgang.com/upload/terry/20230203_175234.mp4
Again, 10 yards.....
https://www.tradgang.com/upload/terry/20230203_175416.mp4
Now at 4 yards before he realizes I'm there....
https://www.tradgang.com/upload/terry/20230203_175429.mp4
And then this guy shows up....
-
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Now he turns and is coming at me from my left, and you can hear him woofin at me while getting politely asking to leave again by the chomping one for the last time.
You can only see him at the top coming from the right for a split second when he turns toward me and I put down the phone and went deep hook on him....
https://www.tradgang.com/upload/terry/20230203_180238.mp4
Once he stopped and got through with his speech, he backed up and stood his ground.
Then THIS guy shows up to my right, so now I'm surrounded...

This all was happening so fast, and it was such a rush....
So now I texted Jim and told him I was 4 yards away from the chomper, and he replied, "Dang Terry, don't pet it!!!".

I have been hunting with this bow for two years at LTR now, and have killed 3 javies and 1 big hog. All were pass through shots. I'm the "new guy" on this hunt. Took my first ever javi on day one, and my second on the last day with 30 minutes of day light left. Wasn't planned that way, but it allowed me five full days to hunt. It was an incredible hunt with a great group of guys with a wealth of experiences. Terry's tips prior to the hunt proved to be spot on and the javi's taught me a little more (think humility). I must say, that after watching Terry hit the ground and crawl after his javi, I thought 'this Green guy is a little nuts'. I learned that he's just very enthusiastic. Terry worked his butt off to insure everyone's success. He tracked for guys through stuff most sane people wouldn't enter. He was the first up and the last to turn in everyday. Can't thank him enough for everything. It was a week of fun I'll never forget!

The story for my monster javelina...
I saw 4 javelina working their way south on a dirt road. The wind was blowing from the south southeast so In had to come up with a plan. My best shot would be to get into the brush on the west side of the trail and hope that they would stay on the road and pass me.
I got deep into the brush, about 10 yards. I did that for two reasons: first, to try to control my scent cone from the wind; and second, to be deep enough into the cover that I would blend in as much as possible. the cover closer to the road was too short for me to hide behind.
As I snuck in to the cover I took a good look at the group and saw that one of them was much bigger than the others. I decided to try for the big one.
The wind was blowing very hard (20 to 30 MPH) but the direction was consistent so I thought I had a chance. I could just barely see a patch of javelina fur through the brush. I decided to turn my back to them and to shoot when the big one was even with me. That way I would minimize my movement. When the big one was even with me and broadside I drew and shot.
I saw the wind push the arrow a bit to the side as the javelina flinched at the shot. The arrow went in a bit farther back than I wanted while all 4 javelinas scattered.
Terry and I were hunting together that afternoon. we waited a while and then went after the blood trail. Terry is like a bloodhound on a track. He sees things that most hunters would not notice -- and he loves to track. I let him take the lead and I trailed him to help[ him orient himself to the last bit of sign as we went. The javi ran a short loop around one side of the road; then the trail led across the road close to where I was when I shot. I had not heard him cross the road because of the noisy escape and jaw popping of the others that were with him.
As we trailed the javi into the brush on my side of the road it was quickly getting dark and our work became a flashlight job. Terry ran into a wall of cactus and I was using my flashlight to guide him to the other side of it when he said, "I see your nock." I use Glory Nock lighted nocks on all of my hunting arrows. I worked my way over through the prickly pears to where Terry was and I saw the nock too. It was very eerie to see the lighted nock seem to appear and disappear as the wind was whipping the mesquite tree branches around blocking and then unblocking the view of the nock. It was an eerie green glow that looked like it was moving.
Terry asked me to stay where we were standing while he worked his way toward the lighted nock. It looked like it was maybe 15 yards away, but that was an illusion. The dead javelina with the arrow still in him was only 6 or 7 yards away. Terry said, "Wow. He is big."
I started breaking branches to create a path out of the jungle of cactus and mesquite with Terry following.
We got the critter to the car out on the trail and he was huge. Every bit of 60 pounds. He looked like a cross between a hog and a javelina. It took both of us to load him up.

It sure was a nice winter break from some of the cold in Indiana. As far as the hunt I got lucky and was able to fill my tags quickly. This doesn't happen to me very often. We had a group headed our way with the wind at their backs. We headed them off quickly and had a nice 6 yard shot with a 15 yard recovery. An hour later we had one that caught us on a stalk but hesitated for a second too long. He offered an 8-9 yard shot through a tiny hole that I was able to slip an arrow through. I wasn't too sure of the shot but Hunter found him laying 50 yards away in the edge of a dry wash. I got to spend the rest of the trip watching Hunter get some stalks in and taking some pictures. Here's a few.

My week one monster was made into breakfast sausage that we enjoyed for breakfast in week 2.
During week 2 I took one of the javelinas to Ruiz Custom Meats in Laredo and had the whole thing made into chorizo. For the uninitiated, chorizo is a Mexican sausage made with spices and vinegar and very finely ground meat. We ended up with 11 roles of chorizo sausage. Everyone on LTR 2 got to take a roll or chorizo home.
Terry's photo of chorizo and eggs reminded me that I have been eating my chorizo too.
Here is a Super Bowl Sunday dip I made with chorizo, refried beans, cheese, salsa, and green onions. It was great.

We won’t talk about the first day of the hunt other than it was action packed with Meathead shooting a double (I missed my opportunities). I got a few pep talks from the gang that evening, back at camp and was reset for the next day. The next few days were filled with wildlife watching. I spotted coyotes and bobcats chasing down rabbits many times. Also many many javelina and whitetails.
As the evening of the last day closed in I began getting many stalking opportunities. With around 40 minutes of light left, I was able to get into range of a group of 4. They got down wind of me, and scattered across the brush. I tried to get in between them and cut them off as they regroup. I set up on a dried up creek bed as one ran passed at full speed less than ten yards away, and I stuck it right at the top of the heart. It ran and died on her feet less than 20 yards from impact.
What a hunt!

Backwoods Coffee - All brews went over well. The two new roasts were the first to actually challenge High Noon. As all ways, the attendees loved having them all each morning. However week two really solidified week 1s findings. The 2 new brews continued to get lots of attention, more so than any other brews over the years. High Noon is still overall #1, but Lost Break and Wren and Ivey are tied for 2nd. And I agree.

While Backwoods was ruling the morning, Shifty's ruled the rest of the day. All 3 were used every day Classic, Red, and Garlic Salt. Ribs, Javies, Ham, sausage, potatoes, sandwiches, and more. These guys REALLY liked it on Invasion 1. And then Invasion 2 came around and all 3 were used on javie, steaks, pork and more pork, eggs, in Pete's Super Beans that had been de-gassed ;), enchiladas, geezz I forget what all.... EVEYONE loved it an Shifty sent enough for ALL the hunters to get the trifecta to take home..... Classic, Red, and Garlic Salt.
American Leathers Big Shot gloves were admired and used in camp shooting targets. None were really used hunting, understandingly, as guys didn't want to change anything just before a hunt. Also, some were shooting their own Big Shot gloves, and more were shooting their own during Invasion 2.
Abowyer broadheads drew a lot of attention, and two models were taken out to hunt. Joe took a couple of White Tails home the 1st Invasion to set up for Invasion 2. All were very impressed with the precision edge put on by Sponsor KME. Joe took them out to hunt as he got them tuned to his bow.
The Dark Timber shafts were shot in camp, and both were taken to the field, and a Javie was shot with one. after two rounds of hunts they seem to be very durable, but I'd expect nothing else from Big Jim.
Trad Only shafts both were shot in camp, and both were taken to the field again on Invasion 2. And I shot 2 javies with them last year.
The Centaur heads were admired by everyone, but neither were shot, probably due to being glue ones and no hot glue for those who wanted to try them out. I used a Battle Axe last year to cut one of my Javies in half. Ken really wanted to hunt with one but was too busy hunting eating and sleeping he never mounted it on one of his arrows.
Everyone that used bow quivers were impressed by Don's new quiver design. And someone took it to the field. Ah, and his hog light was also taken to the field. His hog light bow set up was also drawing a lot of attention. It now comes ready to hunt with a green light.
VPA 3 Blades were responsible for a large majority of the kills week one. Most of these kills had very short recoveries on BOTH hunts. Others tried the one sent that were different weights than what they were using, and they were also taken to the field.
The Asbel Zip Up was put on a pedestal as far as construction and the quality of the wool used. And, the color/patter REALLY drew attention. It was also taken to the field and deceived a few Javies. And I killed my javie wearing it.
And as always, there's always Zwickeys in camp. This year, we had all 4 blade models available to use. I blew through both shoulders with the Delta 4 blade.

Zeebob contacted me and and said Ken used the Eagles Flight and liked it so much he used Zeebob's E F to finish out the deer season.

OK, the Natestir must be tied up.... here is the other Javie that he tagged out with. 20 minutes apart.
Oh, if anyone that is driving next year, bring a crock pot. A big one if you got it.
Geezzz, hold on, email taking forever to send me the pic. Check back in a few.

Great stories guys, thanks for sharing! Terry- Are there any openings for LTR 24?
-
Yes, there will be I'm sure. You want on the 'consideration' list? That list is for folks that haven't been yet.
I have to figure out who of the repeat offenders are coming back in order of seniority.
I have two at the moment on it so let me know. :campfire:

Yes sir Terry, please add me to the "consideration list". I've never hunted javies but looks like a great time!
