When someone suggests a nock point of say 5/8" are they talking about the upper or lower side of the nock. I have always been a split finger shooter ( 1 above/2 below ) but want to try 3 under and string walking. Any input appreciated.

They are usually referring to the lower side of the nock, i.e. the nock will be above the arrow when it's on the string.

I tend to agree with Mac. However, you don't really know unless you ask. Some do nock the arrow above the nock.
-
If you do try 3 under put a nock set above and below the arrow nock.

Off the shelf on my setup shooting 3 under my upper nock is 7\8" and the lower fairly close to the arrow when on the string, I'd guess about 1\4" between the two points but I always measure to under the upper point.. too little between the two points will possibly spit the arrow forward on the string when you come to full draw( ive come so very close to dry firing a few times from having the upper and lower points pinching the arrow nock when at full draw) so the upper and lower nock points mustnt be too close either... I started a lot lower but with experimentation kept moving up until the arrows behaved for me..Ive heard others scolding that nock points should be lower, but don't be afraid to play outside the box.. Bows and setups are like fingerprints, Very individual..my shooting improved leaps and bounds with a very high nock point..you will have to find your own sweet spot. And then there's clocking of the arrow on the nock.. how the fletchings brush the shelf..nock tension..on and on..step by step..all I can say for sure on this is..make changes one at a time, and try them when you are fresh so you do NOT allow fatigue to dictate changes. I like to try my changes in the morning, judge the change, maybe make an adjustment, set it aside till evening and shoot again, just a few arrows and see what I've actually accomplished.

Great information. It will be interesting trying this out. I did know that the nock sat above the arrow. I was questioning on whether they measured to the top or bottom of nock.

I always went with how much the arrow is above square with string regardless whether you nock above or below
I use two tied on nocks and shoot split , less wear on glove …

What method do you use for your tie on nock? Is it just a thick string with a constrictor knot? I don't t have any serving string since I am not making my own bow strings

BCY Nock Point Tying Thread you can uses dental floss or strands off old strings will work.

Yep, this, and it is better if the nock string is slightly larger than the serving string.
