Can this stain also be dissolved in denatured alcohol? [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I’ve been using the Aniline dyes from Lee Valley for years, they work with alcohol as well as water.  I also use them to tint epoxy coatings when building projects that call for it. Great product !

So much better than wood stain. I make mostly hickory bows and a few Osage. Hickory does not take stain well. As I want it darker, I just put on additional coats of Annaline. It dries very quickly in alcohol. I use warm water when I use water.
On my Osage bows I seldom use dye.  I like the bright yellow color of the wood at the start and the “chocolatizing” as it ages. Snakeskins look great on Osage.
You’ll like the annaline dye. It’s a little runny so be careful. Sometimes I darken the outside 8-10 inches of the limbs with black or dark brown dye for looks. Easy to mix too. I like yellow with just a tint of red mixed in. Makes a hickory bow look like Osage…but doesn’t darken like Osage.

Didn’t work out for me.  Here three wood samples that I tested on. Oak, maple and hickory.   This was a light maple tint but it went all wrong.   This worked fine when dissolved in water.

However,  no harm done.

Using water on the Water based soaks in better but you need to give it some time to dry.
I did some veneers .030 and it soaked all the way threw.

Maybe the kind of wood is what the Alcohol base is for :dunno:

Each of the above are at least six coats of dye.

One final thought. Analine dyes are most commonly used for coloring custom guitars and not necessarily representing natural wood colors. Doing a test strip makes all kinds of sense. I usually do a test with multiple applications and then choose which I like.
