My dear friend, John Pruitt, killed this nice buck yesterday evening off his place in Tennessee with a bow and arrow that he made last Thursday. The hickory used in both pieces of equipment came off his farm. I own several selfbows and flintlocks that John has made for me over the years and I have the pleasure of talking to him at least once a week. He turned 85 this past September and he reminded me of the upcoming event for at least 6 months so I would make sure and get his baked goods care package in the mail on time. He is the genuine article!

I'm closing in on John...just about to turn 78. I've been removing weight on some of my old bows so now shooting under 40# between 35-37#. I gave up my Hog lease in southern Georgia and was about to give up deer hunting except my neighboring farmer in Aiken, wants to deer hunt her land. John is my new inspiration to keep hunting! What pound bow is his selfbow? Thanks for the post! tippit

If I were to guess, I would say between 30 and 40 pounds.

That is absolutely fantastic! I hope that I just make it to 85, let alone be able to deer hunt with a selfbow. And get it done on a dandy buck no less. I love to see it.

Thank you John and thank you for sharing. That's the stories that hit home for me!

Thanks for sharing! That is great, gotta keep it up. Here is a picture of the last deer from MD legend Rob Davis before he passed. He was reduced to hunting from a golf cart, but still got it done! Keep on Keeping on. :campfire:
