Wow, chapter 3, I got Mamba a while ago but didn’t shoot it because of shoulder issues. I got it out today since I can shoot right handed again. Probably the most quiet bow I ever shot !!

I suppose I am new and hooked. I received my very first ASL on Monday October 30th which was. 66” Creek Walker Gator. I tuned arrows close enough and too my first deer which was a decent buck on public on Friday November 3rd. I have now tried many bows and seem to prefer a 68-70” bow with a slight dished grip. I am still learning and trying bows. I prefer 46-48 pounds at 30” draw. I have a true 30” draw.
Looking forwards to reading and learning more on here. If anyone has any low weight bows for sale 40-44@28” 68-70” send me a text or call 828-855-5480

Give the Black Hunter 3pc longbows a glance. I've had 3 or 4 of them and I will attest to their good value and performance. Their limb cores are bamboo, for very smooth drawing, particularly for long draw archers. Yes, they are both cheap ($150) and made on the Pacific Rim, but they are *that* good.
I, nor Trad Gang, have any affiliation with these bows or their manufacturer. They're just truly really good bows for the buck and my recommendation for a newbie getting into trad archery/bowhunting. Add in some matched carbons and go kill something for suppers. :saywhat: :campfire:

Hey buddy I am new to ASL (HH bows) not new to the traditional archery scene well I am fairly new I started shooting a recurve in 2020, I’ve taken my 46th animal this year with a stick bow.
Thanks for the heads up, I’ve had numerous black hunters along with allot of other high end recurves and R/D long bows. I am only interested in HH style bows now.
Thank you so much for your advice and help.

Just picked up a nice bow for my collection of ASL’s. A Benoit 68” 41@28 gray glass on both sides. It’s a real sweetheart !!
-
Very nice. Looks like a good piece of Cocobolo for the riser. Might I ask, how long is the riser, fade to fade?
-
Looks like the riser is 15” tip to tip !!
-
Ron that was mine lol. Great bow! Bob from Minnesota bought it from me. Congrats!
-
:biglaugh: I am very glad you sold it to him !!
-
If memory serves I think I bought it from him first…. :biglaugh:

With Bob that sounds about right !!

Considering a pheasant hunt, so I dug out these vintage POC flu flus and mounted some vintage Hill’s Hornet small game heads [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] .

I'm in the middle of building an ASL with my friend Colin from Outlaw Bows. The model is called an 'Emu - High Speed'. Emu being a large flightless bird from Australia, and high speed referring to the amount of backset in the limbs.
I have three big elm trees in my yard and one of them suffered badly in a drought a few years ago so I cut out some of the dead branches from the canopy early this year. Some of them were long enough to get some veneers out of for bows, so they will be included in the bow.
I also have a deep appreciation for red ironbark - a kind of hardwood tree here in Australia. It's fantastic for firewood, smoking meat, and other carpentry stuff. Without a doubt, some of the hardest and best firewood on the planet. It has a beautiful colour and I hunt a lot on the property where I cut my firewood so I'm including some ironbark in there for the riser.
The limb cores will be hoop pine.
Here are a couple of pictures of the process so far. I'll glue it up later this week and most likely make a dedicated thread about the whole process and finished product.

I really wish this thread would have stayed buried….. I finally narrowed myself down to just my JD Berry Taipan (original 1991 model) and sold off pretty much everything else but this makes me want to order up a Vixen from him.
That bow was the one that really brought home what an ASL should feel like for me..
I talked with James yesterday and he has reopened his books and I am about another phone call away from ordering … I was tossing up from the Misty Dawn or the Vixen but thank I’ll stay with vixen..
Maybe I can fight off the urge
-
I have never posted on part 1,2 or 3 of this thread the whole time its been going, but I am ready to pull the trigger and get a Northern Mist Shelton on order. I will post pics and specs when it arrives.

So this may be my “Hill” to die on (pun intended) but I recently had a very negative experience with a bowyer who claimed that he built a “historical” Hill-style bow. Foolishly, my curiosity got the best of me and I took the bait. The end result was something that is better suited for a tomato stake than a Hill-style bow. That said, I know if you ask the question, “What is a Hill-style bow?” you will receive multiple answers. So, let’s open this can of worms… To me, when I think Hill-style, I think of the following:
The riser should be no longer than 12 inches. The limbs should be no wider than one inch at the riser and only .5 inches at the limp tip. The limbs should be built with what Howard called a “bulge,” meaning that two-thirds of the distance from the end of the riser fade-out to the string nock tapers down to 75% of the width and thickness of the base of the limb, then the remaining 25% of the limb narrows to 50%. The end result is a stable, thick-limbed bow with an elliptical tiller that resembles a Gothic arch.
I’m not trying to stir the pot, but I think anything else should be called a flatbow. I will leave this video for your consideration:
https://youtu.be/CynXaUIThic
-
Yes buyer beware. The term ASL or Hillstyle of bows has been blurred to the point of confusion. I think your assessment of the measurements are correct. Short riser narrow limbs not more than 1” wide at any point. I’d add a deep 2” plus grip that narrows on the belly side not the rounded grips some bowyers make.
There are at least 3 bowyers professing to make a Hillstyle bow that have wider limbs and not very thick longer 14” plus risers etc. These flat bows also have limbs with near rectangular shape the sides are square. The true Hillstyle will be tapered to the belly side “trapped”. The narrow deep cored limbs trapped to the belly are one of the defining characteristics of the Hillstyle longbow. There is a reason they are making these flat bows, they are easier to build quicker to produce.
Alot of people like these flat bows and that’s fine. When I first got into longbows I didn’t know the difference either. But there is a difference most definitely. A true Hillstyle bow is all I will shoot. The new fad in ASLs are shooting 3 under with a bow quiver and long hold target archer form. Maybe the wide limbed flat bows are better for this I don’t know.
-
We got the final shaping done on my bow over the weekend, so the only thing left to do now is put the coats of finish on it. Very keen!
Here are a couple more pictures, but once I get it for real I'll probably make a proper build thread and link to some videos of it all happening as well.

Hillstyle, Who would you say are the bowyers making a true Hill style bow and not a flatbow?
-
Without mentioning any names, I have a longbow that just seems to be perfect for me. I have owned a ton of Hill style longbows looking for the magic bow and this one seems very close. It probably has a lot to do with the grip I like and the poundage that I can still handle. Anyway I decided to measure it and see if it really fit the measurements given by the earlier post. I honestly didn't think it would but it fit perfectly with the Hill bow measurements. The one exception is that the limbs are not trapped. Maybe that's a good thing, I can lower the poundage if need be. :)

If you’re on the fence about getting a bow from Howard Hill Archery, you may want to act quickly. It sounds like Craig is retiring soon. I also heard that he doesn’t have a buyer lined up to take over where he’s leaving off. This may be the end of an era.
-
A couple of quick pictures of my finished up bow. Will get some better ones once I tune up arrows, put the quiver on, and get a nice string.

you mean sling the back quiver over your shoulder ......
.... i had to go there , you knew I would :biglaugh:

I expect this from you, and wouldn't have it any other way!
Woodies and split for ABA, and carbons with three under for hunting. Bow quiver probably for hunting but hip quiver for ABA. No back quiver! Maybe I should get one? :biglaugh:
-
No back quiver! Maybe I should get one? :biglaugh:
Absolutely! :biglaugh: :biglaugh:  Make one or ask Nate to make one for you! Game changer along with a good swing draw, just sayin'

Wow it’s been so long since I’ve been on this forum but first thing I did was come back to the HH threads. Sold my only hill style bow years ago and man do I miss it.
Looks like I might need to order one real soon.
-
Highly recommend Nate Steen back quiver. I've had 4 different back quivers. His is #5 absolutely no comparison especially if you are looking for a hunting quiver and use the swing draw.
-
When I start doing some ABA shoots around here a back quiver could be a lot of fun. I'd prefer to not have a quiver on the bow but it's my preference when hunting so that's how I've got the bow setup at the moment.
Not sure the speed of the arrows yet but they've tuned beautifully at 30.25in carbon to carbon with about 220gn total on the front. They weigh about 490gn, so will be interesting to see the speed out of a 45# bow, not that it matters. My favourite thing about the tune (and what I was striving for) is how long they are, so my point on is only around 20 metres, which is where I want it for the sort of hunting I do.
I might put together a big thread about this soon, as I mentioned before. I have heaps of cool pictures to share. For now, here are a couple more of the bow.

I had a really rough week. I’m supposed to be at hunting camp right now, but life happens. That said, I was happy to come home to an unexpected long skinny tube from Hamilton, Montana today.
A little while back I took this bow on trade, intending to use it as my new bow fishing rig. I asked Craig to reshape the grip and refinish it with a gloss finish. It showed up today with no notice. I’m pretty pleased with the results and very sad that Craig is retiring!

Don't know if I'll ever get an ASL. Not as many years ahead of me as behind. I like mild D/R Kota and Big River, more pronounced D/R like MOAB and Big River 21st Century clone.

No reason to avoid a Hill ASL, there’s no difference in shooting one trad bow vs another other than hand placement, and ASL is the simplest to get down. When you release the string, just like all bows, the arrow goes where it’s pointed, literally no difference. I’d avoid carbons unless you really want to fuss, and spine is more critical for good arrow flight. Aluminum or wood are easiest to dial in.
They’re American traditional, simple, elegant, and effective.
The original hill bows were wood self bows, lemonwood. They tapered to the belly to keep the back stable and strong, and that’s how you carve out a self bow. Tapering to the back with glass is more stable. The back glass basically holds the bow together, leaving the belly glass wider and that’s your power glass, and gives the compression. So we typically use thicker glass on belly and thinner on the back. It’s fun to debate what’s true Hill or not, and there’s basically little made today like the bows of the past. Materials are different, processes and materials are better, different, and each bow is its own creation. Some are 1” at the fades, some are not even an inch, and some over. Not really a big deal, risers are of little consequence whether they’re 12”,13” or whatever. The working limb length isn’t affected much or at all depending, especially with long bows of 68” ish. It’s great when you watch video on Hill crafting a bow, how he just cranks it out with minimal exacting specs, mostly by feel and eye.
I couldn’t agree more with shootability, some bows just don’t feel like others. There’s often a huge difference in feel.
Gluing up a Reverse Handle this evening…

Rumor has it that a buyer has been found for Howard Hill Archery. The bug lives on! It looks like the company may be moving to Georgia. :campfire:

Any word on how the Howard Hill move to Tennessee is going?
I loved having Craig just 60 miles south of Missoula where I live. I had HH build a bow for my grandson last year. He and Howard Hill share the same birthday so I thought it was appropriate.
-
Kim Sha Traditions. All yew with a very thin carbon lam on back
-
Re read the "LONG FIX", went back outside applied few more things with swing draw and group tightened. A lot of info in there on Hill Method.
-
Picked up a St Patrick Lake Mushin Styk last week. It’s a fun bow to shoot.
48@28, 66” backset. I’m hitting pretty good at 15 yards, havnt gone much further yet.
Osage riser, Yew and bamboo lam, Yew veneers.
-
Gary, beautiful bow!!
-
Thanks Gordon.
It’s about perfect for me at this stage of my life. I prefer woodies and it shoots 55/60 pretty well, and maybe I could play around with different weight heads.
But the truth of the matter is it shoots Easton Axis Trads (500s) the best. Right now they weigh about 475, so about 10 grns per pound. Which i already had for another bow.
-
I still am tinkering with my old ASL 51@28 ( I draw 28”). Currently I am shooting 2016s with a 145 tip with the arrow weighing 550 gr.
I might be trading for a 45# ASL from a friend. Can I still use the 2016s with that weight of 45# ASl?
I like to shoot heavier arrows from it.
-
yep, if its a Hill Hill ... with shallow shelf , 190-200's up front at 29"-29 1/4" will be dandy I reckon

Just got this new Jim Belcher Union Jack. 66", 40@28". It has a shedua riser, bamboo limbs and light brown glass. Jim has been making bows forever and his workmanship is perfect.
Hi Union Jack is different than his Hill Jack. The Hill Jack has four laminations on the back of the riser. The Union Jack has three lams on the back and one lam on the belly. It's a sweet shooting bow.

That bow is an older Wesley special. I was just cleaning it up after that deer. It is good they are so much work to process or I’d probably have a hard time passing up those spikes. I think it is just standard blonde myrtle and boo. Black back white belly i picked it up used from a friend.
It has been good to me so far.

I wanted to try a Northern Mist Classic but there wa a long wait and Steve became so swamped he finally stopped taking new orders. So I kept watching his Stock Bows for Sale page, hoping to find a Classic in my draw weight. Finally, just before Christmas one appeared and I was lucky to buy it. I can say I am impressed. It is a smooth shooting, solid performer that shoots well for me. Burgundy Rosewood Dymondwood handle, bamboo cores and black glass on belly and back.
-
That's a beauty, Phil. I haven't been checking Steve's web site as often as I should because I haven't been seeing lower weight bows listed. Snooze, ya loose. You got a good one.
-
I was shocked to see it there. I feel like I hit the lottery. 😀
-
I recently traded for this NM Shelton with the RW grip. I usually prefer a straight grip but this feels really good so far. It looks like dyed elm veneers but I’m not sure. If it ever quits raining I’d like to shoot it some more and maybe take it on an upcoming pig hunt.

When I heard that Howard Hill bows was being sold I looked at their in stock page and found a LH "panther". I can't recall all the wood combos but the riser is birch and the limbs have a rust colored glass. I really like the bow and am crafting some arrows for it right now. I have a question though that I can't seem to get answered. The string that came with it, does anyone know what material Craig used? There appears to be tip wedges if I'm looking at the right thing. But the string seems thicker than the low stretch strings I have for my black widow recurve.
Anyway, it seems as though the new owner is taking some time getting things up and running as their website hasn't been updated and I can't reach out to them.
Thanks! I'll post some pictured when I get some good ones.

Unless you asked for a low stretch string, Craig usually put dacron -- B 50 or B 55 -- on his bows. They will easily handle low stretch strings though. I usually use a 12-strand D-97, padded to 16 strands in the loops, on mine.

Thanks Orion, I am fairly certain it's b-55. I also reached out to the gentlemen I buy my strings from and he had me check something which is helping me lean more towards Dacron as well. I appreciate the help.

Anyone know the current status of Howard Hill Archery - has the new owner given any indication when he thinks things will be up and running?

Evhg127, your trees grow sideways down your way also? How did you paint the yellow arrow? I did start a post if “ archery pictures” but is just a general picture post. I posted this pic before. But no harm again. My new now…..

Hi David. Those yellow arrows are Twoforhooking’s famous bamboo specials. I believe he used a rattle can on them. Whatever finish that the shafts came with is bombproof. He gave me a couple to play around with and they’re like shooting carbons.
Speaking of shooting carbons (sacrilege, I know), I got to try some Black Eagle Instincts today. They flew well, but they are so skinny that it threw me off a bit. I guess it’s a sign for me to stick with cedar!

Here is a better picture of the boo arrows.

I’ve been removed from archery since the late 90s until about ten or fifteen years ago. In the 90s. I went from cedar shafts, which didn’t hold up when impacting my grandfathers barn, to aluminums when I got my first compound. But you could bend those expensive aluminums. No such thing around here as judo points. You lost 50% of the arrows you shot and bent the other 50. I stuck to targets and hay bales. But it lost much of its appeal. The old red fibre glass longbow I had before that brought so much joy just flinging arrows at everything. I remember some guys came moose hunting here and one or two of them had carbon shafts. They looked so small. So thin. I remember him telling me “ they were either broke or they’re straight “. When I got back into it I wanted durability. I wanted to fling arrows again, but without the restraint or fear of breaking or bending them like I had as a kid. So I went with carbon. But I have to say, the whole process of making a nice set of wood arrows is rather appealing lately.

Also, is that a sunset hill quiver?

Last few days of rabbit season. In this pic I’m about 1500 feet. Which is about 1400 above a community a mile or two away . I have one bad snowshoe but walked up without. And was headed for the rounded hill in the distance which is about 2000 feet. Saw one ruffed grouse at lower elevations. One ptarmigan at this elevation and good few snowshoe hare tracks at the lower elevations.

I dip my arrows in oil based rustoleum. Yes, Sunset Hill quiver. Also, I’ve gone back to B50 on my bows and I think I’ll stay there after alot of experiences with low stretch strings.

Meet Sagittarius. A Ekin reworked by Nate Steen. Throwback to Swinehart black back & white belly. The deep handle is thin and squared and feels great. Quiet and fast compared to my other big five. Should have it next week. Northern Mist Sprague. 66” 48@28. I know I am supposed to like string follow, but so far I like back set bows better.
I still expect my Black Widow PTF to be my numero uno, but I do enjoy shooting ASL also!
