Title: Laredo Tusk Roundup 24 ‘HERE WE GO’
Post by: KSshrewman on January 21, 2024, 12:29:33 PM
The gangs all here. The weather is cold and wet. High today mid 40’s yikes! Been out a couple times scouting and corning with a few sightings but no real hunting yet till then rain moves out.  But no worries…. Good food, good fellowship and some good bourbon gets us ready for tomorrow.  More to come….

Some close calls today.  Several guys got close to Javi and hogs but no dice.  Kind of a swirling wind day didn’t do any favors.  Kaz had a great late dusk stalk on a chubby a big ole Javi but not quite right.  Then coming out he nearly came face to face with a big hog but the forehead shot wasn’t ideal.
We’ll be back at it tomorrow!

Ken and Flingblade Gary each got one the last night. I'm sure they will be along soon with pics and stories.

Worst weather conditions I have ever seen hunting javies.

Joe and I just got back from pre corning our wagon wheel on the other property across the road that nobody has javie hunted in years and we was 16 javies.

All other hunter are still out doing the same on the spots Joe and I scouted this morning.

Since we have no idea what areas will be better than others. We just found wagon wheels for everyone and name them. And everyone drew a name out of a hat.

Things look promising for the start tomorrow. New property,  new adventure. :campfire:

Here is my buddy Rocky ... we have been hunting together since 1973, yes we are old ! All the LTR hunt #1 guys we shared camp with most likely will take weeks for their ears to recover from all our stories. A very fine group to share camp with !!

The bow Rocky used used to be mine, it's a beautiful 51# Blacktail Elite recurve and he is shooting 90/95 cedar arrows made by Susanne St Charles tipped with Zwickey Delta heads. They weight about 700 grains and at his 31" draw they fly way better than you might think they would.

I won the St Jude hunt and a little St Jude mojo goes a long way !

My Javi was taken the last day of the hunt, a nice sunny 74* day in South Texas. There was way more activity on our two sunny days. Rocky's Javi was a spot and stalk with a 23 yard shot and a short recovery. My Javi was shot from a hiding spot at an intersection of several senderos, a 12 yard shot and another short recovery. Recovering your Javi is not an easy job in this thick South Texas brush country. A set of clippers and a saw are a must !! My Javi ran about 30 yards and died in a nasty thick spot that took me a good long time to clip and saw my way in for the recovery. I can still feel some of those left over Prickly Pear thorns in my behind as I type this. Blood trailing is very difficult due to not being able to stay on the trail even when you can see it, you have to trim brush get back on the blood and then do it all over again in a few more feet. Luckily for me my Javi let out a few last gasps before dying and I was able to follow the sound.

My gear was a 40# Border Black Douglas recurve I bought on the Classifieds from Wingnut, Easton 600 Trad shafts bought on the Classifieds and 150 grain Stinger 4 blades. The Stingers were given to me by a generous Trad Gang member but I apologize for not remembering his name.

The full moon coming up on our last evening of the hunt.

Aside from the several rainy days the hunting here was action packed trying to out smart these little Texas critters. We saw LOTS of deer plus coyotes, bobcats, badgers and even a cougar sighting  :saywhat: :saywhat: :o

There was also a benefit to all those rainy days .... We were able to get to know our fellow hunters a little better, share our stories and years of knowledge. The human element of this hunt is priceless and we were blessed with a very fine group of Trad Gangers.

If you have not been on a Javi hunt this is a good one    :archer2:

Like Ken my javi was shot the last day.  Terry was going to pick me and Mike up at 5 so we would have time to pack up for the trip home.  I was planning to be on the road by 6.  I made the shot at 4:35. Took it right to the buzzer on that one!
This is the view of one of my shooting lanes from one of my hides in the thorns.  I'm gonna call it thorns cause yes; everything has thorns down there.
The view from my Waldrop Pacseat

I was sitting there thinking the hunt was over, dreading the looooong drive home and rehearsing the reasons (excuses) for lack of success when over my left shoulder I spot movement.  Two javies pop out onto the sendero from 10 yards or so behind me.  And downwind??  They turn and head my way.  Yes!!!  The lead javie was pretty good size and I come to 3/4 draw as he passes through my first shooting lane.  But when he stopped he was facing me.  I came to full draw twice on that one but never had a decent shot.  Those two passed through but just then another bigger one pops out and heads my way.  I'm thinking to myself it's now or never and come to full draw as he is walking through my first shooting lane.  I look behind the shoulder collar and release.  I hear the thump of a hit and see a big red bubble where my arrow passed through.  He lets out a grunt and peels off up the sendero and back into the thorns on my side.  A few seconds later I hear a muffled grunt that sounds like it's less than twenty yards away.
Terry drives my truck down at 5, we go over the scenario and start looking for blood.  The javie ran about twenty yards up the sendero before cutting into the thorns and Mike finds my arrow where it turned in.  Bright red blood with bubbles; good sign.  Mike stayed at the last blood on the edge of the sendero as me and Terry worked our way into the thorns.  He only made it about another twenty yards into the thorns but that was the nastiest twenty yard blood trail I've ever followed.  A big thanks to Terry for his help; at one point he was on his hands and knees bird dogging the trail.  It was an interesting blood trail to say the least.  Terry hollers out to stop and not move and says he found a big chunk of flesh.  Then he picks up my javelina!!  Yes!!!  I was worried because it looked like the shot was a little far back but the arrow exited right behind the left shoulder.

I was shooting a 61 lb. 60" Black Widow PSRX Osage that I named "Cowboy" as it is orange and black.  Oklahoma State; Go Pokes!  My arrows were the Barebow shafts and I used a little acetone to remove all graphics on them so they were all white and the broadhead was the new Simmons Great White.  They weigh 596 grains.

Javelina are such a cool little critter and lots of fun to hunt!  I have a whole new respect for the animal now that I've spent a little time in the habitat they call home.  Someone once said on another LTR thread that everything down there wants to stick you or poke you and that's no kidding.  It is thick, nasty unforgiving flora.
In spite of the unusually wet weather it was a great hunt because of the guys I was fortunate to share camp with.  All the hunting stories in camp sustained us as we waited out the rain.  Sadly, I had to leave Thursday night so I missed the steaks Kaz brought from Rube's steakhouse but that being said, my favorite camp meal was Pete's venison stew!  Five star!
I wish my hunting partner for the week; Mike, had had a shot but that just means we may have to go back for round two.  If we had five days of sun I can't even imagine how many opportunities we would have had.
Thanks again to all the guys in camp for a great week!  If you're thinking about doing this hunt; DO IT!!  You won't regret it.

The first group of javies came out last night around three thirty and there was a wad of seven of them.  They were coming toward me and I was able to stalk within 60 yds straight on toward them and duck in to a really nice spot where I could hide behind a wall of prickley pears undetected.

I only had two narrow shooting lanes and I was hoping that at least one of them would stop perfectly to give me a shot. The first three passed through the lanes without giving me an opportunity. Then the lead javie decided to turn into the bush about eight yards from me. Once he got in to the bush about 3 yd. It was wide open between me and him , and he immediately spotted me. You would take a few steps and look at me again this happened four times, And after the 4 times he'd tried to catch me move, even though I didn't, he had had enough and trotted off into the bush and circled down wind.

I had set up with a perfect crosswind. Yes, once he got behind me. Of course , he began to huffing and puffin to alert all the rest of the javies and they all got nervous and went into the bush. So, the jig was up with the first sounder.....

Week #1 was great. My first time here, and it was tons of fun. The weather wasn't good, so we spent a lot of time getting to know one and other. What a fantastic bunch of guys ! Gary and I were teamed up and it was great seeing him shoot his in the last half hour. Other than deer, my only encounter was with a beautiful bobcat at 10 yrds...so close to a shot. My thanks to Terry for providing a terrific hunting opportunity and "all" the guys for making it a wonderful hunt !

Round 2.  A second sounder comes out on the same sendaro in the same place and does the same thing coming toward me. So I do the exact same thing as well to the exact same spot.

Once again, 3 walk past without giving me a shot opportunity, but the 4th one does as the vitals are wide open and head behind prickley pears.  I start drawing my bow, and I have no clue why this Javie  spooked as I had the same stiff crosswind in my face.

Javie spooked and so did the rest of the group, but they didn't leave just yet.  All were in different places and angles, looking around dazed and confused.  The lead javies jogged up the road a bit and veered left into the wind through some low grass and into the bush.

Again,  the jig was up.....

Round 3....

Here comes another sounder of 11 headed toward me, and I lit out back to the same place and set up. Along they came at a pretty steady clip . Soon I hear crunching so I  readied for a shot. I'm not sure how many passed through my lanes without offering me a shot, but one finally  did.

I normally do not shoot javalina quartering away as a lot of times they will wheel and you will end up hitting them in the tail. At least that's what I was told 20 years ago and I've since heard the same from othe hunters in camp, and yes, many of those results have happened on LTR hunts.

However, this one was only eight yards away and had no idea I was there, so the shot was away and true blowing through like a paper bag full of shaving cream.  Then the explosion happened, javies running everywhere away from me.

One that was ahead of mine went straight into the bush, two 45ed away through some short grass into the bush, and one ran back down the road the way they came from and turned Into the bush on my side about 20 yards down the road.  I heard it running at a fast clip. Then all was silent for about fifteen seconds.

I was kind of confused because none of the escapees were running like they were hurt , and running  through whatever was in their way. From the shot placement that I saw, I knew I had drilled the javie and couldn't figure out why everything that left seemed fine.

I took a step back away from my hide, as that was the way I had to get out was to back up away from the road. I took 2 steps back and 9 yards away on the other side of my hide was my Javie, five yards off of the road. It did a flip flop for about three seconds and it was over....

So I just chilled out for 45 minutes waiting for Smokin Joe to come pick me up at dusk.

Group 1 revenge....

Yesterday was a really fun merry-go-round  with 3 other sounders, but no shot opportunities even thought many walked by me. I did have a really nice one in perfect position with head hid behind the prickly, and at half draw a little one walked up in between us and totally blocked the vitals.

Next up is an original Rothhaar 145 gr Snuffer...

For the Javie above I grabbed my Zwickey No Mercy hog arrow instead of my Delta.

In the meantime, damned O'l 4 Blades...

After flying in Friday and making a trip to Walmart we arrived at the ranch. We had some quick introductions and banter before heading out to scout and corn our individual hunting areas. John (Arkansas Traveler) and I drew a "wagon wheel" (an elevated box blind with several shooting lanes that radiate from the blind) in the west corner of the pasture. We found promising sign and began to corn the roads. After we finished our set up we returned to the ranch house for dinner. This is going to be one of the hunts where I gain weight from the abundance of excellent food both at dinner time and in the morning for breakfast. Sunday morning found John and I excited to send an arrow. John sat sentry at the wagon wheel and I took off to walk the roads and more open areas looking for sign and Javies to stalk. There was an abundance of sign left in what was soft ground last week because of the rain. The ground has since dried out and is back to being crusty rocky and in some spots sandy. This is my first time hunting Javelina since 2015 and it didn't take long to remember everything in South Texas has either got thorns or fangs! After a rather long hike I reunited with John and we decided to recorn our wagon wheel hoping that the sound of the truck and corn cup might get things moving. We sat in the truck for a while after we finished. Having hunted with John before I enjoy sharing stories and camps with him a great deal. Sometimes to the point of neglecting my own goals for the hunt. When we decided to return to hunting I climbed into the box blind where I could see all of our "spokes" and John sat in a chair watching the roads upwind of our position. It wasn't long before John called out that the Javies were coming out. I got the nod to begin my stalk. I stared down the shooting lane with a good crosswind and snuck until I felt like I was getting to close for all those eyes and would soon be picked out. I found a spot I could step off of the road behind some cover and knelt down to wait for an opportunity for a shot. Soon the group that was a mix of sows with young and a few boars was approaching my hide. There seemed to be 15-20 Javelinas in the group and the first ones that came by was a sow with  two TINY babies that past me at about 12 feet. She eventually caught my wind a took off into the bush putting the rest of the group on guard. Soon I had another one that I was going to shoot walk into the same spot. By the time he turned to give me a shot he was behind a branch. When he cleared the branch he was barely 6ft away and caught me trying to draw. In a flash he darted into the bush and the rest of the group went with him. I returned to the box blind still grinning from having been so close so early in the hunt. After about an hour Javelinas started to come back out into a different shooting lane and I took off again to try and get into position to make a shot. This time I was able to get a little farther off the shooting lane where I had better cover and more room for things to happen. Again this time the first Javies to come past were sows and little ones. The group was mixed to the point it was difficult to tell which Javie was with which of the little ones. I let 8-10 pass before a couple of lone stragglers walked into veiw. As they were showing up a few of the first Javies to pass me started to walk into the bush just past me on my side of the sendaro. I stayed as still as I could until I had my opportunity to draw. When I first decided to shoot he was quartering to me slightly. When I drew on him one of the others in the group caught me drawing and woofed. He looked right at me but I was already at full draw and the Javie was standing broadside looking my way. When I shot it was at his right side. He spun and I hit him right below the jaw inside the left shoulder blade. He took off in a streak snapping my arrow when the knock hit the ground. While checking for blood I found a second shorter piece of arrow that I think he bit off. With John's help we started to look for blood. I'll say for sure that Javie blood on this dry ground is way harder to see than deer blood on the hardwood leaves of Indiana. We tracked him for about 40 yards where I found him dead in a little bit of a wash in the mesquite. I had shot and found my first Javelina! When I was skinning and deboning him in the skinning shed I found that big Suffer stopped in his right ham.

Monday and Tuesday I had a few more opportunities but the wind kept me from closing the deal. So in the waning sunlight each evening I took to shooting rabbits. There might be more rabbits than cactus but I haven't been keeping an accurate count of either. I was able to kill a rabbit both Monday and Tuesday. Hopefully I'll be able to keep the streak alive and connect on my second Javelina today.

For those who my be interested I'm shooting a Javaman Assyrian 55@29, Arrow Dynamics full length shafts, 160gr suffer with 40gr insert. The rabbits get 200gr VPA Small Game Thumpers.

I've taken quite a few pictures that I'll try to post soon.

Javie hunting can be a sit and wait game or a ground pounder
After day 2, I chose to mix.
Found a hid at the end if 1 sendero with access to 2 others.  A regular loop every 45 minutes added up

I had a successful stalk on day 1, less than stellar follow thru.  At 9 steps javies are HUGE!
Forgot the basics of picking a spot.
Arrow hit way forward, I figured front of a front leg or across the sternum.
200 yd track before I ran into stuff to thick to follow.
Came around from other side and grid searched for a couple hours
Figured javie was still walking

Fast forward to yesterday afternoon.  On one of my walkabout I detoured down the sendero that was closes to last sign
This stopped me dead in my tracks

I knew the meaning.  Another 15 minutes of griding turned up hide, shoulder blades, pelvis and back leg.
20 to 30 yards where I had lost the blood.  Had to have walked over it. THICK
Resolution to my shot.  Not what anyone would have wanted.  Lots of spare time to get into my head and coach for better results.

Day 2 on the new property was an exciting adventure.  Lots of ifs, ands, and almosts.

On to day 3....

Joe dropped me off at "Power1' at about  11:30 and he proceeded to 'Power 2'.

It was slow for a bit but a large sounder came out of the sendaro to the left of my hot one.  They were feeding toward me so I set out after the to try and set up on the 60 yards out, but the got full and lazily wandered ³ into to the bush toward another sendero....

Hold on.... somebody just lost a tag...

Well the second half of the week was a challenge for me. We had Javies working in our area but they always came out downwind with no way to get in a good position for a stalk. I was fortunate to be able to see many birds that I don't get to see in Indiana. That made the time pass a little quicker when things were slow with the Javelina action.

The last evening Terry offer the spot he and Joe had been hunting to John and I since they had both filled their tags. We put John in a chair to ambush on what had been the most active road for Joe and Terry. I sat in the shooting house and watched all the other roads ready to hop out and make a sneek. It didn't take long before a group of 6 popped out at the end of the sendaro just as expected. What wasn't expected was that they would mill around before walking back into the bush two different times. Soon after they went north I had a group of 9 turkey poults and two hens come down my sendaro vacuuming up all the corn. They caught me trying to get pictures and turned back. I recorned the road and prepared for the golden hour. Like they had read the script a small group of Javies started down the road in my direction. For the first time since Sunday the wind was perfect. I climbed out of the box blind and made my way to an ambush spot about 40 yards from them and prepared for a shot. After waiting for what seemed like forever I snuck back out to the road to see the group had turned to follow a sendaro that T'ed into the one I was hunting. Once they were out of sight I hustled back to the box blind and turned up a different sendaro hoping to cut them off. The wind was favorably quartering when I found a good hide near the intersection of the two sendaros. As I was squatting down to be ready to shoot from my knees I saw a Javie through an opening in the brush that was watching me get into position. As I was kneeing his hackels were going up. I was busted! They bolted into the brush and I returned to the shooting house. The last day was getting shorter and I just blew what I expected to be my last opportunity. Back in the shooting house watching all the roads I watched a good sized covey of Scaled Quail and some other birds. 10 minutes later a pair of Javelinas that were with the last group I spooked came out. Back down on the road I took cover and hustled to a hide to wait for them to pass. I watched them feed in one area for a while until they turned and started to feed away from. They were moving away faster than I could close the gap so out of desperation I took out my Javie call and made a couple of short calls to mimmic a small tussle. Both of the Javelinas turn my way and looked briefly then went back to feeding. Since they were now facing me I put the call away hoping they would feed back to me. No such luck. The turned and started back in the original direction they were heading. I tried my call trick again but they would only glance in my direction and did so with little concern. Even more desperate I desided to go full distress with the call. That got them moving! Straight into the bush in a hurry. Ok, back to the shooting house for the last 20-30 minutes. No sooner did I get settled and the same 2 Javies came out in the nest sendaro west of where I last saw them. Once again I'm off to find a hide before the fading light ends my hunt. I shot down the sendaro east of then and cut through the brush to where I expected them to soon pass and I'll be....there they were. Calm and feed in my direction. I had a great hide, a fair quartering wind and only about 15 minutes before time was up. It seemed to be perfect. And it was as the first Javie slipped into the shooting gap. First his nose, then his collar. Two more steps and I'm sending an arrow about 12 yards to fill my final tag. I had my bow up and tension on the string. One step and I'm going to full draw. Suddenly without warning and without lifting his head he shot across the sendaro into the bush and my hunt was over. So close but still so far! The hunt was good and the group was great. Looking forward to the next time!

Okay, the day three merry-go-round.....

Joe and a pre corned the spots on the original ranch this morning and we got over on the other side of the road new property about eleven o'clock after corning , the original property's hotspots for the next group of hunters that are now coming in tomorrow.

It was pretty slow the first couple of hours and then a sounder of 11 came out of the sendaro to the left of my hot one but they went away from me. So I let them go knowing that they would reappear somewhere else later in the day. Then it was slow again for another hour. So I was still at the hub monitoring all of the sendaros.

Then all of a sudden, I look directly to my left up a senndaro that had a deer feeder with a short fence around it the keep out the hogs and javalina that was set off to the right side of this sendandero in a circular open area. It was like a scene out of young guns where the regulators were ride up and appear at the top of a hill and pause.  It was the 11 again and yes, they we coming my way. They were maybe 60 yards  away from the circular opening with the deer feeder in the middle. The perimeter short fence had several small mesquite trees growing up in it. So I had a great approach without getting caught. Once I got to the circular opening , I went to the right and went around the perimeter fence which kept me completely covered. The only place that I could set up was at the brush where the circular open area ended. So I knew I had no backcover whatsoever. I only had this wall a brush to stand beside. As I peeked out to see how far they were away away from me. I saw them go into the bush on the right. At this point I thought they were headed toward the other sendaro  where I saw them before so I went back to the hub to monitor it....

Title: Re: LTR 24 ‘HERE WE GO’

I had no more gotten back to the hub for just a moment and I looked back up the road. There was one single havelina still standing on the hill. I kept an eye on him to see if he was going in on the right to join the others. Now that he was alone , he was moving toward me but very slowly since he had all the corn to himself. A couple of minutes later I was the one that was in a hurry.....

Here comes 10 of the 11 out of the Bush back into the road. This time they're only thirty yards away at the most from the circular area coming toward me, with the only place again I could hide being the wall.

With ten of them Jockeying for corn.I had to move and move now. I leaned over and jogged with the low fence as cover and ran around the circular opening back to the wall. As soon as I got set up, I heard crunching. So they were now closing in pretty fast. Again, knowing that I had no back, side or front cover at all I knew I had to shoot the first one or I was going to get made.

Within a minute and a half I saw legs through the prickley pears so I slowly raised my bow and prepared to draw. As the javie started to walk again I began my draw all the while he was still behind the last 3 yd of prickley pears. He only paused for a moment.  I was at full draw when his nose stuck out and he just kept walking. As soon as the vitals were available the arrow was gone.

The shot placement looked great, however the arrow did not blow through. I could see the arrow sticking out as well as the downward angle and thought it had pegged in the lower off shoulder where it starts to form a leg bone, and boy did he start carrying the mail.

Now here goes the merry-go-round....

KAZ ran around with 1 for a week but he never got a shot. I will say that south TX is probably not very friendly for string trackers.  One guy the 1st week shot 3 animals with Chad Orde's model and the string broke very quickly after entering the land of spikes and daggers.

Javie is now barreling to the left circling the deer feeder's perimeter fence leaning left so hard like it's on a motorcycle. It only makes it 3/4ths of the way around the fence and goes head over heels piling up to a motionless halt.

What happened to the other half of the arrow?

Mr Rothhaar road it all the way till the end. He had the last laugh by permanently retiring the arrow.

To be clear,  I was using one of Chad's string trackers the 1st week.  I've been using that particular tracker for quite a few years with varying but generally positive results.  On this hunt the 17 lb string broke at the broadhead 3 times (haven't figured out why) but in no way was the cactus or thorns a factor.  Actually, one time the string stayed in the animal for 50 yds and took me to 1st blood.  I'm still a believer in string trackers when you are sitting/stationary.   Obviously they'd be difficult if you are moving.

Overall the second hunt was much better than the numbers brought in.  Being with the weather conditions from the first week Joe and I could not go out and scout on friday for letting the roads dry. So, we went out early Saturday morning and found 5 wagon wheels for everyone to have a spot. They were nicely spread out as well, giving everyone plenty of property  between each hunting tandem.

Joe and I named all of the wagon wheels and we thought the best thing to do was to draw names of a hat since we had no clue which ones would be more  productive.

There were plenty of opportunities for shots. However, the wind was swirling the first couple of days, and that blew a few sounders up  really quick. There were also several self admitted rookie mistakes made , which can happen to any of us at any time. The rookie mistake of not picking a spot and having your windage perfect but shooting just over its back. One hunter shot just under one, and the coyotes got a couple also.

Unfortunately , meathead and meathead jr didn't see much action even though they were in the middle of the property on the prettiest wagon wheel there with a little pond and a great view. I have no clue why that area was not productive. There was no reason for it not to be.

But again, it was a better hunt than the number speak, and what a great group of guys we had camp and the food they brought was absolutely fabulous.

This particular property also had a very interesting structure, a castle tower created as a replica of one that the landowner had seen in Spain.

Pics in a bit...  watching Tom Phillips put a stalk on....

Another nice javi Terry! Congrats!  For my hunt I wasn't shooting a snuffer but the other end of my arrow was fletched with four fletch in the 60-120 configuration which I learned here from Ryan Rothaar.  If I remember right Roger liked that configuration for four fletch.  It's become my favorite way to fletch for best flight and stability.
Any hogs spotted across the road?

Yeah Gary,  I  grabbed what I thought were my predator spring green pants but I grabbed a pair I inherited from Chris Surtees instead.  They are size 38 and I was having to hold them up because I didn't bring a belt as I don't need on with my pants. But I did Chris proud and got them bloodied.  I found 5 Grey plastic grocery bags and tied them together then hung on end on a towel hook and twisted them up for a belt.  :goldtooth:

How about a little mountain lion  adventure?

Blake was sneaking out of his hide on a grassy
sendero  and he stopped for a moment  and slowly raised his bow. He then came to half Draw, then full draw and held a few seconds and then let down.  Skip and I were watching and had no idea what he was drawing on but we figured a rabbit as he was close to the intersection of his sendaro and a wide pipeline strip.

He then came on out to where Skip and I were at the hub. He was all hyped up! He drew down on a mountain lion!

The lion was now paralleling the pipeline,  so I eased across and started stalking down the pipeline.  The bush was on my right so I had to stalk backwards so I would be in position to shoot if given the chance.  I went for 100 yards or so.

No luck, but it was a rush for both of us for sure.

A great hunt with a great group of guys.  Javis seemed to want to join me in the brush.  I shot mine on the last day at 7 feet.  Double lung!  I'm a decent shot at 7 feet.  It ran 15 yards.  It still took a few minutes to find.  Terry helped via phone.  I also managed to take one of those small skittish rabbits too. Can't wait until next year.

The mountain lion was in the same area that KSshrewman Larry Myers saw the 1st week, and he took a photograph of some cat scat and I found some older scat in the same area uyesterday.

Seems like the hook at the end is a common trait of lion scat most times and both of these have the hook....

I wouldn’t count on it.  Saw 2 buck sparring today and a bunch of chasing activity.

Michael, I'm sorry I was out. Hunting near the power station and for whatever reason I wasn't allowed to post. Maybe it was all the power line Bologna.

I don't know for sure, maybe some body from Texas could answer. But I would say probably early March. Because yes they do chase during these hunts as patrick has said above.

Patrick and I had a wild 'heart felt' adventure last night. I have a lot of catching up to do on other stuff with other hunters as well.

Years ago hunting Javies on the King ranch in March/April we would found sheds. They didn't want you to keep them  :biglaugh:

I did see a one horn buck this year on LTR #1 hunting with Rocky

I am going to try to post a little bit while I am driving. Voice recognition may mean that I have to go correct some things later. If I call anybody names we’ll just say that it is voice recognition.

I got down there Saturday in time to set up a few spots for hog hunting and we hunted Sunday through Thursday. I don’t know why, but my brain thought that we would be hunting Sunday night but this is better.

The first couple of days were a little rough for me. I saw a few Havelina in the evenings, but it was really windy, and they seemed reluctant to come out of cover, at least at my spot for the first couple days. I may get my days a little confused because I didn’t keep a journal. it was either on Monday or Tuesday that I had a pretty cool encounter with a large for Havelina. Actually, very large doesn’t even come close to describing him. I saw them feeding away from me so I needed to take a parallel Sendero and head them off to get the window in my favor. I must’ve had not very much corn on the Sendero because they were moving out a good clip, and I didn’t have adequate time to get myself into cover. If you’ve ever hunted there, you know that it takes some doing to get in adequate cover without impaling yourself on every prickly pair in Mesquite in the county. In any case, I came through a wash and set up behind a bush, when I saw them coming fast. I had cover as the approach, and I was just hoping that I could get a shot off at the lead Havelina. Unfortunately, it was an old wise Havelina , and as soon as his head got past the bush, he spoke to the other side and went into cover. The rest of the Havelina followed suit. I would say this Havelina was around 3 to 4 times the size of other Havelina in the group, but realistically this Havelina  was at a minimum twice his size of other adult or Havelina in the group. I really don’t see a world in which this Havelina would way less than 80 pounds. I know this sounds crazy, but I would not even be surprised if he weighed 90 pounds.  I have never seen another Havelina even close to this size. In any case that was the last opportunity I had him although I did see him a couple other times during the hunt. He was pretty KG, and he knew that he was being hunted, so he did not come out in the open very often.

On Tuesday, I was able to get set up on a group of Havelina moving down to Sandero and put a good shot on a decent boar. I have some video footage I’m not sure whether or not I can post from where I took the shot because I could see him and go down in the brush. I still gave him a few minutes, but he was a very easy recovery. Unfortunately, I had run over a mesquite thorn and needed to have my tire fixed. I drove to the skinning shed, got the Havelina skinned, and in a bag on ice, along with a rabbit that I shot that morning. I headed into town and got my tire fixed and one of the gentleman working at the tire repair place wanted the Havelina and rabbit, so I gave it to them. I was hunting with a late 1950s or early 1960s Paul Bunyan recur for the trip. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The javalina Patrick is talking about I saw 3 days in a row where I was hunting and shot my javies.  His name is Andre, Andre the Giant.

I told Patrick about him, and he didn't realize how big he really was till he laid eyes on him. Boy was Patrick carrying on about him.

I saw him whip his brother and body slam him while on hind legs. They sounded like bears fighting. Joe heard the fight but was set up in a hide as I was tagged out, but Joe got to see him later.   Yeah, 80+.

Sorry for the terrible pics, it's the best I could do with my camera at 100 yards...

He's by himself here....

Now with Andre Jr and normal javies 25 yards closer....

So I frequently get my days confused.  After having killed the javelina, I was really focused on that large javelina, which would be the case for the rest of the week. Wednesday was my birthday, and I turned 56. I frequently or at least somewhat often shoot an animal on my birthday, so I was really hoping to shoot that large javelina. That didn’t work out, so I decided to shoot a rabbit in the evening just so that I wouldn't get skunked on my birthday.

As it turned out, I didn't need to worry about that.  My luck turned around a bit after dark.

I guess that I will start by saying that we were not having a lot of luck at the small feeders that I put out for hogs earlier in the hunt. The only one that a hog showed up was one that I hung for Terry. A group is showing up on Monday but we’re only there for a few minutes because there are so many deer there and they ate all of the bait. We decided to put a substantial amount more out the next day, and a group came in after midnight, and stayed for almost 2 hours. I had a lot of confidence that they would be back on Wednesday, but it was just a question of when.

It will be hard to tell this story without cutting into Terry’s a little bit, but I will do my best.

Wednesday evening and right after dark a hog showed up at Terry’s bait.
Terry hadn’t eaten in a while and quick grab something to eat and drink and we headed out but that hog only stayed around for a few minutes and was long gone by the time we got there. On the bright side, I had just set a different site for a bait, further north where Dusty had dumped some special corn concoction on the ground. Just a camera and a light over this corn pile. I got pictures from that site with 5 hogs and we headed north. I have never stocked up on pig at night with somebody with me, but I knew that it was pretty open , and there was always a chance that there would be a second shot, so Terry came with me. We made a quiet approach with a very good wind and got very close. Terry stayed back a perfect distance so I didn’t have to worry about the hog spooking. I was probably only 10 yards away and they were acting pretty skittish probably because it was the first time that they had been exposed to a light at this spot. They were acting up, and I am not even 100% sure that I was at full draw but I made a good shot on the largest one of the group and I was sure that it was in the pocket. The hog ran off we heard crashing in the brush, but there were no other secondary shot opportunities. We decided to head back to the car, which was a fair walk just to get some lights and give a little bit more time before we check the blood trail. as it turned out, our tracking job would be slightly delayed.

Yep, Patrick is on it....

We went back to his car to wait a bit before tracking, and he immediately checked his other cameras and there we two really nice hogs there that came in while we were stalking Patrick's. So, we lit out.....

At about 600 yards away from my spot I bailed and started a brisk walk that would end in a very slow sneak....

I climbed the berm of my pond and started my approach.   I scaled down the end of berm and now it was time to get serious about my steps. I had a big clump of trees to hide me so I could concentrate on my footing silence.

As I reached the tree, it was now time to ease to my left for a shot.  I didn't want to move too far left to isolate myself from the tree and I don't like horizontal movement on stalks so I try to avoid that at all cost.  So once I made that move I pushed the stalk, as I was already in bow range I  moved forward to clear the tree for a shot.

The biggest turned broadside and a second and a half later the arrow was on its way.  All looked perfect, and sounded perfect with a crash n thrash not far away.  I stood still for a few minutes and eases out to text Patrick.  He called after the text and was I could see his green head lamp coming from a different direction than I expected.  He was ecstatic!!! I'll let him tell you...

Go ahead Patrick...

Yep. I was pretty excited. I had brought a toy along on this trip. Back when we had a drought in Oklahoma I had bought a thermal scope, and now I had it mounted to a piece of pine for easier holding. I brought it on this trip And put it to good use now. As Terry went up the berm, I snuck down to a pond across from the feeder and settled in on the bank. I was watching the whole thing. As Terry was approaching the hog, I could see him and I could see the hogs feeding. I could see a rabbit, moving in and out and a raccoon approaching the feeder. It seems like forever until , Terry got there and took the shot. There were no surprises when that happened. That hog squealed loud enough to be heard in another county and took off and I could see it runoff into the brush. What a cool experience.

Even though Terry was confident and it was a good hit and it sure sounded like a good hit by the hogs reaction, we decided to go back and track mine.

We went back to the scene of the crime and surprisingly there wasn’t very much blood, but we found blood at my arrow around 25 yards to 30 yards away Where we had heard crashing after the shot. The hog rolled down the hill and was laying there. I guarantee the hog was dead before we left to go back to the vehicle. I had used the thermal scope, but didn’t see him because he had fallen in a depression.

A few details on the stalk.  As we were approaching, I put a arrow with a lid, knock on the string in the loop knock it up so I quick yank that knock off and put it into my pocket and chose a different arrow. That arrow was tipped with a Day Six Evo XL broadhead which wasn’t what I initially intended but it did a great job. Full penetration and fell out after 30 yards, it absolutely devastated. It was a bloodbath near where we found him despite a relatively poor blood trail. I’m assuming that is because he was really hauling butt

I had a great time on hunt#3…it was a great group and I plan on making it down again next year. My hunting partner was Sandrat and we were in the Javies all week. I took my first one on Monday. I was stalking a group of about 10 javies as they were feeding up a sendero. I positioned myself about 5 yards into the brush and waited for them to feed by. They were approaching from from left. As soon as the group started feeding by I picked out one of the bigger ones and made a complete pass thru shot on a boar at 16 yards!

This Javie was shot with a 46# Toelke Chinook using Beman Centershot arrows that were built by Big Jim and tipped with 125 grain Magnus Stinger Buzzcuts.

My second javie was shot on Wednesday evening…my evening hunt was pretty slow up to the point that I noticed a group of javies feeding my way. It was getting late so I had to jog down the road to cut the distance as they were feeding my way. I had to hurry and jump in the brush and get set up as they were approaching from my right. This group had around 12 javies so lots of eyes to contend with!  The first javie was feeding on the road right up against the brush that I was hiding in. I was only able to find a spot about 3 yards inside so needless to say as the first javie past by I was really close!  I would say I was about 5 yards from him…as I started to draw it caught my movement!  Wind was good but the whole group kinda scattered all in front of me. I was lucky that a good sized boar stood broadside in front of me unaware of my presence. I let the arrow fly and made a perfect shot!  It was an 18 yard shot that went through both shoulders. He dropped and had trouble getting up and ran into the brush. He only went 20 yards!  I was thankful it died right away since it was starting to get dark. That south Texas brush is tough enough to track an animal in daylight much less at night!

Great job on the javis Mr. Lopez.

I am sure that I will remember more details that I haven't posted as time goes by.  One thing about that nice boar I shot is that I was surprised that I didn't have a good blood trail, but when Terry saw the arrow, I was so caught up in looking for the blood trail, that I missed the obvious.  Terry didn't, and looked around 5 yards down the hill in the depression and called out, "There's your hog"   I was able to repay the favor, and I turned on the thermal scope to take a look around when we got out of the vehicle near where he shot his sow.  I saw it right away, and said, "There's your hog".  It sure was a bloodbath around where she died. It would have been no trouble finding her by the bloodtrail, but was still pretty cool.

So Terry and I got out to skin and quarter our hogs at daybreak, and I was able to get out looking for the big javi just a half hour later than I would have gone out anyway.  I rushed out, but forgot to take my allergy meds and had to come back to camp before too long because my eyes were watering too bad to see very much.  Ended up wasting most of the morning and early afternoon but headed back out for the afternoon hunt.  I had no intention of shooting anything other than the large javi, but determined that if he didn't show up by 5-5:30 I would try for a different one.  As it turned out,  a group showed up after 5 heading toward me, downwind of me, on a sendero.  I quickly got to an adjacent sendero to get a different wind and hustled along it and took a wash to cut over to the sendero that the javi were on, figuring that they might turn around and feed the other way for any corn they had missed, and this would put the wind in my favor.  Unfortunately, when the hit the area that they had cleaned up, the entered the thick cover between the 2 senderos.

I knew that they would come back out, but I wasn't sure one, so I walked the wash between them maybe 75 yards multiple times looking for them.  I decided that I ought to cut out a good ambush spot for them in case they showed up, and was in the middle of doing that when I heard them crunching really close, so I took what I had. I had around an 8 inch hole through a bunch of prickly pear for a shooting lane, and came to full draw when I saw a patch of black getting close to it, and held hoping that one would pause in the lane.  The lead javi did just that, and I shot it.  They scattered, and I had a tough time telling which direction the hit one went because of the cover I was in, but heard some excessive thrashing across the sendero.  I gave it a few minutes and looked for blood.  No5t any in the road, so I stalked up on a pile of brush that I thought there was thrashing at.  Nothing.  Then I found a speck of blood on the reddish soil.  I followed the sparse trail on my hands and knees, which seemed to gather up every thorn in the county, for around 25 yards which seemed like a half mile cutting brush thorny brush along the way until i found it.  Tagged out.  Took that one into down and gave to the same guy as the last, and grabbed some more ice for the cooler.

By the time I got back to the Ranch house, it was dark. Terry had decided to stay out and stage in case hogs came out by his feeder to keep the wind in his favor. He asked me to bring him some food and drink if I came out. After an hour or two, I decided I would bring him something to drink and eat, and I would just stage myself up closer to the other feeder because it was a long distance from the camp. I called Terry and told him I was on his way. Shortly after I had pictures of hogs at my feeder, and Terry was going to come with me, but hog showed up at his feeder too and I didn’t want to drive by there and spook them. So Terry went to his hogs and I took a long way around to stock my hogs.

I came in a different way, and had to walk a good distance, but nonetheless closed the gap and the hogs were still there. There was a deer between me and the light, and I had to spook that deer out of there to get to the hogs. Fortunately, when that deer left, the hog stayed put. I took off my crocs and stocked in my socks, picking up a few thorns, but nothing too bad. Unfortunately there were three hogs they all stared directly at me with no shot angle, and the wind was a little dicey. Waited and waited and waited an eventually I felt a gust at the back of my neck. The hogs perked up and scooted, and one of them turned so that it was slightly quartering towards me, but I knew it was the best shot that I was going to get. I took the shot and the hog scattered. I was not incredibly confident on the shot and was going to give it some time, but Terry had already had some activity, so I headed down to meet him.

I figured that my hog needed more time anyway, so I texted him that I was on my way. I drove down there and picked him up and we drove down to where he had shot the pig. I will let him finish up that part of the story. Period.

So Patrick stops short and desides to go around another way to his spot because he informs me that there are hogs at my spot.  He detours and I
commit to stalking... Exact same replay of two nights ago.... I got into position and even got closer. I don't know how without the wind but I did. I was within eight yards of four hogs in the wide open. It was just the light that Patrick had set between me and the hogs. They were all facing me. So I had no shot for a few minutes but then one made the mistake and the arrow was gone....

Title: Re: LTR 24 ‘HERE WE GO’

The one that made the mistake was a lighter colored. One who had a twin there also.  And there were 2 black hogs as well. They all busted out and ran at the shot to my left and around my little pond. The one i shot only made ut a quarter of the wat around. I haven't seen many pretty hogs, but I have to say this one was kind of pretty because of its color and it's multicolor brindle coat. .....

The blood trail on Terry’s hog wasn’t as good as the previous and while Terry went to retrieve his arrow to Mark last blood, I use the thermal scope and was able to see his hog. I got the chance to say “there’s your hog” again.

And we were off to find my hog.

I informed Terry that I was up two to one when it came to saying I found your hog, so I was hoping that he would even it up. We had a lot of trouble finding blood, but found a big splash of blood on a log maybe 15 yards away, but that was it. We started great, searching, looking all over and just couldn’t find blood. Terry was tracking around the pond and I was looking in the field. Eventually Terry suggested that I go up to this blind to get a little elevation to use the thermal to look through the field. I did that and still couldn’t find the hog. I saw rabbits, deer, and a bobcat, though. I started looking down at a little strip of land that bisect the pond, and I was lucky enough to find it. Total time from when I shot it to was around an hour and a half and the coyotes had already been on it. The hog looks smaller in the picture because the coyotes had remove the entrails. I was able to salvage the majority of the meat though. Boy, they sure can get on that quickly.

The red spot is where I shot the hog, and the blue is where recovered.

It was a great way to end the hunt that is for sure. Lots of great memories during those 3 weeks.

Patrick and Terry are hog hunting fanatics. And they get results.

I was at LTR24 for two weeks. I arrived just before the week-one hunters departed. That made it possible for me to see old friends and meet new friends. My hunting action started in week two.

After the hunters drew their hunting areal locations, there were two locations left over. We called them Power-1 and Power-2 because they were south of the big Power Company locations on the southern parcel of Corazon Ranch.

Terry and I both started on Power-2. Though the views were beautiful and we saw some nice deer, Power-2 was very slow in terms of javelina. Terry and I decided to split up and he went over to Power-1 and started seeing javelina right away. Power-2 remained a place to see deer, hawks, beautiful birds, and no javelina.

Terry waisted no time and tagged out in week two. After he tagged out, I moved over to Power-1 and was on them right away. It was there that I used tag number one.

The Javelina #1 story.
We saw that there were several senderos that the javis were using. Being the stealthy guys that we are, we set up a few natural shooting hides on the senderos that would give us places to duck into after stalking up in a way that closed the distance to the critters and gave them enough room to walk past where we set up the hides for a shot.

Javi #1 was working her way down the sendero with a group of about 8 others. There were mixed sizes, including some juveniles, so I wanted to make sure I evaluated them as they passed my hiding spot. I was well hidden with a thicket of mesquite on my right, and a mix of prickly pear and prickly bush to my front. I cut a single shooting hole in the prickly bush to shoot through. I could just barely see through the tangle of branches in a few places -- not enough to see a whole javelina, but enough to see movement so I could know when they were getting close.

I wasn't sure that the single shooting hole would give me enough flexibility in shot choice, but with just the one small hole I knew I would be hard to spot.

Sure enough, a bunch of javelinas entered the little dirt road far enough away that I knew I could make it to my hiding place if I was quiet and smooth enough to avoid detection. I headed down to my spot.

Terry was watching through binoculars and texted me a warning that they were working my way. I got ready.

I am in my hiding place and I hear a loud javelina fight. It must be two boars fighting over the pecking order. I got a very big boar last year...another would be nice.

It seemed like it took forever for the javelinas to work their way toward me, but I started to hear them eating and jostling around. Then I saw a bit of movement, not a whole javelina but just the bits I could see through little breaks in the thick cover. Then they disappeared behind there thickest part and In slowly lifted my bow into position.

The first two that I saw pass my shooting hole were small to average, then a big one stepped into the hole and I drew and shot. The arrow went through the chest and landed in the dirt beyond the javelina. It took two quick steps and stopped. Then it took two more and stood still. Then its hair stood on end, not just its back hackles, but all over its body. It stayed like that for a few seconds and made itself look huge.

Then it turned and trotted into the cover about 10 yards to my right. I saw it stumble as it curved around behind me, then it disappeared and I heard it wheeze a few times and then silence.

Terry and I found it where I last heard the wheeze. It was a very large female.

We weighed her when we got back to camp and she was 56.3 pounds. When I cleaned her we saw that the Woodsman broadhead had gone through her and got both lungs without breaking a rib. The arrow had gone through without touching a bone at all.

I took the meat to Ruiz Custom Meats in Laredo and had all of it made into Mexican chorizo. I love that stuff.

The last-minute javelina.

It was the last hour of the last day of week #3. I was at the Tank Pond with Bill and Tom. Tom was after some javelinas far to the north that were hanging out in a dead-end sendero. I had dropped Bill off at a spot that had promise on Javi Highway...that's a technique we call a drive-by.

I was satisfied with the hunt because I got a javi in week two and had it made into chorizo. I love good chorizo. I had no intent of getting another javelina, so I was just relaxing and watching Bill's set up with my binoculars.

There was about a half hour of shooting light left when I spotted a group of javelinas way down one of the dirt roads. As I was looking at them with my binoculars I could see that they were working their way down the sendero away from me. They were too far away to ever intercept before they reached the far end of the road, and I knew that they would disperse into the thick cover if they reached the end of the road.

I was at a spot where several of the little dirt roads come together -- sort of like the hub of a wagon wheel with the spokes radiating out making triangular pie slice sections of brush. Each of the roads were about 3/4 of a mile long. The one that the javelinas were on terminated at a huge cut for electric power lines. So did the one at the other side of the pie slice.

Hmmmm....maybe I can go down that other road and cut over and perhaps get to the end of the sendero that the javis were on and head them off before they get to the end and before it gets dark.

This is a technique that I decided to call the Drive-and Dive. I jumped into my Nissan Xterra and I went barreling down the road all the way to the power lines and hang a left and follow the power line cut to where I think the other road ends. I parked the car and sneaked to the end of the road and peeked around and there are the javelinas working their way toward me. It only took a second to realize that they would see the car before they are near enough for me to get a shot. Darn it.

I scrambled through the brush and moved the car so it is behind some thick stuff a bit farther away. Then I headed back toward the javelinas and now they are only about 40-50 yards away. To get a chance at them I had to get to the other side of the road so the wind would be in my favor. I had no choice. I needed to cross the road in the open, and it was worth a try. I put my head down and just stroll across the road acting as if I have no interest in the animals. It worked...they ignored me.

I found a spot to set up that is about 5 yards off of the edge of the road. I had a tall, thick cactus to my right and a tangle of mesquite in front of me with a small void that I could shoot through. It was almost too dark to shoot. If this doesn't happen in the next few minutes it would be too late. I put an arrow on the string and I stood as still as a statue.

The lead javelina was pretty big and it stepped into my shooting lane. Draw. Anchor. Pick a spot. The arrow was gone. Pandemonium breaks out as the critters exploded into the brush. My javi squealed and ran into the brush across the road. As it ran I lost sight of it because of the mesquite between me and the road. I was not exactly sure where it entered the thick brush on the other side of the road. This could cause a problem.

I stayed still for about 10 minutes to let things quiet down. It was now getting hard to see. The sun had set. and it was getting darker very quickly. I decided that the best course of action would be to walk back to the car, get my flashlight, bring to car closer, and wait until it gets darker. Then I would try to spot my lighted nock.

That was a good choice. Once it was dark I walked down the sendero a few yards and there was the bright dot of the lighted nock in the brush. The javelina had gone less than 40 feet from where I shot it. It was another big female, about 50-55 pounds. The woodsman broadhead had gone right through her heart, and she was dead in a matter of a couple of seconds -- a very clean kill.

The arrow had gone all the way through and was pushed back into her when she fell on her side, so the arrow with the lighted nock was standing straight up making it easy to see from the road.

The drive-and-dive technique worked. Drive down the next road over, cut over to the road the javelinas are on, and dive into the cover to head them off.

Myself and Roadkill

drove from Reno NV to Laredo TX I never hunted Javelinas before, Terry and Joe showed us how to setup and what to expect. Day one I had two shots the first one I can't even tell you what happen other than just missed didn't pick a spot the next shot the Javelina just dodged the arrow, Terry told me there were FAST! never seen this kind of fast I had three more shots missed two and I hit one

Terry and I looked for blood for hours never could find any. Terry is a bloodhound he went in the thickest stuff I have ever seen, camp was great Terry gave a broadhead sharpening class and explained why he uses the broadheads he does.

Roadkill hanging wind indicators this helps on stalks,
Terry help us get read for hunt. more to follow.

As I was walking down a Sendero, I noticed some noise in the brush. I circled around and startled a couple of Havelina that tried to get away, but got hung up in some wire panel. I wish I could’ve gotten my phone out sooner because they were crashing into the wire fencing like crazy trying to get out of there. I did my best to try to calm them down, telling them that it would be OK. They were only around 2 yards away. They did not seem convinced.

On day 3 Terry hunted with Skip "AKA Roadkill" and myself we had not seen the number of Javelinas like the day before and it was lunch time so I was walking up to were Skip and Terry was and about halfway up I caught some movement I knew right away it was a Mountain Lion it was about 15 yards yards from me. The Mountain Lion didn't see me it was stalking something and it was in full sneak mode, I tried to get a clear shot but the brush was just to thick, I got up to were Terry and Skip were relayed my story and Terry grab his bow and went it to Predator mode, I don't how many Mountain Lions I have seen but that one was the best the closes I been to without a pack of hounds.

What surprise me is there not a waiting list to go on this hunt, the friendship food hunting wildlife just amazing. I spent 5 mounts in Alaska this year I thought about this hunt a lot.
