For those those of you that use VPA 3 blades, what exact head do you use most? Please include weight and cut width.
I know the Arkansas Mafia's, PDK's and KAZ's
Also, do any of you use the Small Game Thumper?
Thanks in advance..... :campfire:

I usually shoot 1 1/4' 250 gr. 1 1/8' 190/200 is next. When I'm not shooting Snuffer. All glue on.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2: :campfire:

175 grain screw-in for aluminums, 200 grain screw-in for carbons and 160 grain glue-on for woodies. All 1 1/8.
D.P.
-
200 grain screw in, 1 1/4 inch cut on a carbon shaft.
-
1 1/8" 250 grain screw in 3- blade on Easton 6.5 carbons. Only broadhead I've used since around 2010. Great head, great customer service!
-
1 1/8” 3 blade 175 grain screw in
-
On 2219 I use 1 1/8 inch 250gr screw in. For wood arrows 1 1/8 inch190 gr or 250gr glue on. I don't see the 250 glue-on on site though.
For black bear I use 1 1/4 250 screw in.
-
Been shooting the 125 grain non vented 1 1/8” for years. My go to head for deer/ bear/ elk. I sharpen them on a 6” pvc pipe with sand paper. Awesome heads
-
As far as Broad heads I’ve only used the 2 blade Penetrators. The Thumpers are sweet for Bullfrogs. The shock helps put em down quick!
-
When I’m shooting 3 blades it’s the 160 gr. glue on. I use the thumpers a lot too just for stumping.
-
Don't see the 250 grain 1 1/4" glue on either. Must not be a market for them.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2: :campfire:
-
1 1/8 175 gr. for better penetration
-
Just got confirmation from VPA that 250 grain glue on heads are no more. Be careful with the ones you have. Even the 250 gr SGT are discontinued.

I use the glue on 3 blade heads in 160, 190, and 250 grain on wood carbon or aluminum. The latter two will have screw in broadhead adapters applied in either aluminum or steel depending upon setup.
Yes, first year using the Thumpers.
-
I use the 250 gr 1 1/4”. I also use the SGT . :coffee: :campfire:
-
When I use a 3 blade is the VPA 250 grs 1-1/4. My arrows are mostly FMJ.
-
250 gn 1 1/4" three blade followed by a 100 gn insert....
-
300 grain 1 1/4 and 1 1/2.
-
Really disappointed in the reduced glue-on options available.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2: :campfire:
-
200 gr. 1 1/4 cut
-
200 grain screw in, 1.125 and 1.25" cut , can't tell any difference in penetration so far, unless it be the position I'm contorted into and short draw a bit.
I've shot the 1.125" for several years with good blood trails but got some 1.25 " last year...
Most stuck in the dirt with a 530 grain arrow total weight
47@28 TD longbow
-
160 gr for woods and carbon, I put them on a 75gr steel adapter for carbons.
-
With limited heavy weight glue-on options I think the 190 grain Snuffer heads I still have will be my wide option. Or 160 grain with a woodie weight.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2: :campfire:
-
Wudstix, I was pretty sure that glue on snuffers only went up to 160 grains.
-
Pat;
In the early days Roger made a bunch of different weighs as they were all hand made; 190, 175, 200, etc. Not large bunches of a specific weight. Those odd weights are rare. I ran across a half dozen in a knife trade. Once they got the process refined he made 160 grain heads. After the company was sold they started making 160, 145, 125 etc... Then it sold again and I think they started making more options. Currently, I believe they are making lighter weight heads that sell now.

VPA 3 blade glue on, 160 gr, 1/8" cut. I get desired overall weight by epoxying to a steel adapter (75 grn).
This is my ONLY 3 blade head I hunt with. I do not and have not tried the small game thumper.
-
Based solely on the first size given, 250 gr is the favorite.
-
175gr 3-blade both 1-1/4" and 1-1/8"
-
1-1/8" 250 grain screw in, 29" Carbon express 150s, 4 4" low bananas with nocturnal nock = 580 grains. Stone cold deer killers.
-
I use the 1-1/4 in 150 175 or 200 depending.
Also I do have some SGT’s in same weight but have been using hex heads lately for no particular reason.
-
I have used the 160 gr. glue-on three-blade. They are 1 1/8 inch. Very high quality and easy to get very sharp.
-
200 grain 1 1/8”. 300 grain 1 1/8. I asked them to consider making some 1 1/2” with vents like the old Snuffers. Would love to see them take that up. My favorite for turkeys.
-
I would add that the 300gr 1 1/8” are the toughest head I’ve ever shot. Pretty tough to ruin one under normal circumstances.
-
I use the 190 as well for bows 50-55lbs. Flies true, and usually complete pass through. I botched a shot last year and it hit forward and high. Broke the near side scapula and went on to punch through the far side. Dropped the deer right there, Was using the Wesley Special, 55 lbs. 15 yard shot. Arrow total mass was 674 grains.
1 1/8th width.

I’m shooting 1 1/4 175 gr 3 blades out of my 48# Wessel Recurve.
Will be testing on Iowa spring turkeys, Manitoba black bear & Iowa whitetails
-
3 blade 200 grain standard size which I guess is 1 1/8".....
-
Shot 200 grain 1 1/8 for years.
-
For my bows up to 55# 1 1/8" 175 grain; for bows 60# and above 1 1/4" 250 grain.
-
1 1/8 in. 175gr screw in
-
For glue on heads it seems like VPA has 160 or 190 grains, which should work fine. Not many glue on 3 blade heads being marketed above 200 grains, glad I picked up a few 250 grain VPA's while they were available.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2: :campfire:
-
1-1/8” 175 grain 3 blade
-
1 1/4 250 grain.
-
Glad I traded for a couple glue on 1 1/4" 250 heads and some 1 1/8" 250 heads. They should supplement my Snuffers nicely.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2: :campfire:
-
I’ve shot the 150-grain 3 blade in the past. Great broadhead!
The small game thumpers have a design flaw, IMO, unless they have fixed it. The metal ribs extend all the way to the base of the head with no collar to distribute stress. So, if you use an arrow without some sort of collar, the head acts as a splitting maul on your shaft. Horrible design for a stumping tip! I ruined many Axis shafts with those thing on an elk hunt.
-
I'll have to see how the SGT fit on woodies.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2: :campfire:

Back up for a new eval....
-
Post season this year: 175 screw in's with a brass 50gr insert have replaced the 160 expoxy to the steel 75gr adapter. Negligible difference in weight, same flight, easier set up. Perfection! 1 1/8 cut as usual.
-
These 3 are running neck and neck....
175 - 1/8
200 - 1/8
250 - 1/4
-------------------
200 - 1/4 is next with only 50% of the popularity of the 3 heads above.
-
175 - 1/8" through Whitetails, Black Bears and Javelina's
-
175 1-1/8"
200 1-1/8"
250 1-1/4"
Easy to sharpen and deadly!
-
175 1-1/8"
200 1-1/8"
250 1-1/4"
Easy to sharpen and deadly!
All depends on what bow I'm using...
-
I anchored 1 javelina with the 150 grain 1/8 3 blade and blew through 1 javelina with the 175 1 1/8 3 blade. Also shot the boar with the 175 1 1/8 3 blade…the broadhead made it completely through the boar at 20yds. Very impressed with the durability and ease of sharpening of these heads.
-
I use 250 gr 1 1/4 cut. I also use the SGT as well.
-
When I use a three blade: 190 grain glue on, 1-1/8”.
-
200 & 250---1/8
-
You know what I prefer :goldtooth: Didn’t know the 250 Grain SGT are being discontinued but I love those heads for stumping and small game hunting. Bullet proof, pretty easy to find the arrow, and devastating on small game… :campfire:
-
I love the SGT, stops an arrow almost as good as a judo and super lethal on game. I buy them in glue on version as the thread posts can bend on hard hits.
As far as broadheads go I like the cutthroats. I consider them a vpa head. I also use the 200g glue on 3 blades
-
1-1/8” 175 grain 3 blade and the 175 grain Thumper, 100 grain brass insert.
-
I use 250 grain 1 1/4", total arrow weight is 590 grains.
-
I shoot 1 1/8" vented, 125gr, 3-blade VPAs.
