Hello everyone,
It's my first post on this forum. I don't know if i had to present myself or not, but i think it's more proper to do it.
I'm French guy, from the south, i'm 23. I came to archery grace my father. I tend string since i was a kid and after years of hunting with rifles i decided to go entirely in the trad way.
I'm on search in the old continent of a phenolic bow, i don't know why but this kind of bow mesmerized me.
I try to find one on internet and i put a topic in a french trad forum, but i think this 70" bow styles have not much enthusiasm.
I came on tradgang with hope to have returns of americans fellaws on this types of bow, nervousness, reliability ...
I look for a Wing Thunderbird or a Shakespeare Cascade X-29 by the way :archer:

Welcome, and good luck on your search and journey.

Thanks!

I have had two phenolic bow risers. I still have the 19" Covert Hunter riser that I use. Both made by Border Archery in Scotland. It adds weight and strength to the riser. it is not used in the limbs.
-
I don't see the Border Achery ones when i search this type of bow. I never possessed bow of this brand but the model you mentioned look great!
The ages of your riser?
-
Micarta is a type of phenolic, I believe. Bob Lee is making more and more of their bows with solid micarta risers. I have two of them, and like both very much. Other than perhaps not having the “soul” of a wood riser, micarta seems to be an ideal material for making bow risers: durable, heavy, and highly resistant to damage from wet or hot conditions.

Yeah your right, Micarta is a type of phenolic material. I don't know if this type of bow can be call "Micarta bow" because i'm not expert in the process of fabrication. Maybe it's the actual Micarta??
I also think this haven't the soul of the wood and i'm not adept of plastic things, but in this way it's look clean.
This bow can clearly pass through the age! I just need to find one :banghead:
Somebody in France told me, in USA this bow will cost 50$...
Can you attest because i'm little bit pensive on this words
Thanks for your returns

I've had several 62" Wing Thunderbirds and shoot one currently as my go to bow. They are wonderful shooters and very fast, stable and smooth shooters. I also have a Ben Pearson Raider that is a Phenolic/Micarta bow and it is a great little bow also. You can't go wrong with the Thunderbird though. I've shot a lot of animals with mine. I'm down to 2 even though I've had 4 at one time.

You reassure me!!
Honestly i put interest on this bows because of their looks, and i told myself if they no more produce bows like thats it's maybe beacause it was a bad innovation of this epoque.
The guy who told me it cost 50$ told me also it was unpleasant to shoot...
Thanks for your experience :archer2:

There is nothing bad about them. They are a bit heavier but this aids in the ability to absorb more shock and steadies the hand at the shot a bit. They are virtually bulletproof though. You wont find them for $50. Maybe $200-500 used and likely $1000+ for new.

Ok, it’s the price range i think about!

The new material bowyers like Black Widow are using is G10. It’s as heavy but it’s supposed to be better made than Phenolic. But it is considered an upgrade and can cost substantially more depending on the bow.

There is a Wing Thunderbird on eBay. This is the listing #

I will check this thank you. But the taxes importations for France are spicy :goldtooth:

I believe that the "Phenolic" you refer to is Linen Micarta which is a mix of phenolic resin and many layers of fine cotton cloth compressed under great pressure to make the extremely stable material found in some risers and tip overlays as has been noted.

You maybe right, i don't know exactly the material use in them. But in general i saw this 70" bow calls phenolic bow. Micarta consists with phenolic and the Linen Micarta on google look similar on some knives, to deepen...
Toelke seems to propose a Linen Micarta bow. I don't know if it's recents or not but doesn't really look like a Wing Thunderbird.
I let you judge! :campfire:

An other one by Bob Lee

For me it's look more rough to touch than the old phenolic in the Cascade or Thunderbird.

Welcome...an
I am partial to phenolic and G10....have two Bob Lee Ultimates and a TimberGhost phenolic with a G10 TG on the way...also have other phenolic models...prefer the added mass and its durability in enduring approximately 100 hunts per season.

Proof against the elements !
The Bob Lee Ultimate look great, i wish i could try one someday.
What stands out in this topic is the greater weight of these bows or rivers. For a recurve it is a plus in the stability of the shot :archer2:
Thanks for yours returns :campfire:

I'm a big fan of weight in the middle of the riser handle.

You might also want to keep your eyes open for a Bear 67 ½ Super Kodiak. (Black Beauty) Those risers are also made from phenolic. That was my first real hunting bow and to be honest, I don’t know why I ever bought another bow.

My father told me about this model... I would really like to find one but I don't dream too much, these bows are carefully guarded and I totally understand that.
I still keep my eyes open! :campfire:

For me it's look more rough to touch than the old phenolic in the Cascade or Thunderbird.
Bob Lee bows are made primarily for hunting, so the finishes are dull, so as not to reflect much light. Ideal for hunting in a ground blind where black clothing is recommended. Their goal is to provide enough friction on the surface to aid in gripping the bow. I wouldn't call it “rough.”

I really like your interventions, very pragmatic and fair.
For my part i spoked from a visual impression.
I understand, these parameters may seem incidental but can change the situation in fact.
So what do we say? These bows are pleasantly suitable for harsh situations :archer:

If micarta is an option, I have Liberty English take down that has a micarta riser that I really like. It’s a pleasant shooting bow and takes down to two pieces, about thirty four inches each.
Just guessing a take down bow would make shipping easier, cheaper.

Phenolic is a good heavy riser option. Also, a great take down option.

It's a bit nebulous when you look at the calculation of customs fees, it's flat rates and percentages that add up but it keeps increasing.
My father has a friend in the USA who sent him some vintage broadheads.
He got $50 worth of customs even though it was a gift...
In short, it’s a bit of a shame to be able to trade with you…
So I don’t think the fact that it can be dismantled has much impact on the bill!
But very nice bow in any case :campfire:
It doesn't look like micarta in the photo though, it looks more like leather!
-
You probably know this but in the case of my bow which is a bow bolt takedown, micarta offers more strength for that and is a little heavier. A good friend Allen Boice made this bow and he is now deceased.
I just sent the photo as an example; they do not all look the same. Highly unlikely I would ever sell this one.
Best to you and glad you have joined our ranks. Can you hunt with a bow in France and if so what game animals are available to hunt?

Yeah we said it above, micarta is a good choice for a robust hunting bow. I totally understand you , it's the kind of bow that we keep for life, only for what it represents.Sorry for your friend, may he rest in peace.
Thanks you, i really enjoy to see a community with so many people and shared experience! Yeah we can hunt with a bow in France but only recently compared to you. Late 90s early 2000s legalization took place.
We have to go through a day of training which provides a certificate, but it is not a very popular way of hunting, and the traditional ones are very rare. 90% of compounds...
For those who are game, everything that is legally huntable with a rifle... during the season of course :knothead:

There are other options with a combination of wood and G-10 that gives you the mass weight and strength, plus the look of wood.... The Sasquatch Special that i custom build has a full G-10 overlay on the back of the riser and a G-10 I beam combined. Here are a couple to look at.

I also build this same design with a G-10 frame in an ILF format.

There are a number of bow designs that i use a combination of wood and G-10 you can look at on my website here. I would be more than happy to build something for you. I have a few guys in France that have been shooting my bows for years too. Kirk

I didn't know your factory before that. For what my compliments are worth, I am obliged to congratulate your work. You make very beautiful bows. The Obsidians series are so original and refined... respect.
I was thinking that if I had to pick up a bow in the future it would be a Schafer but now you're making me hesitate! :archer:
It’s nice of you in any case to have taken the time to share your work with us.
I'm going to discuss about your bows on the French forum, to find out what they think of them and that way I'll do some publicity for Big Foot. :campfire:
