Title: Wood identify
Post by: PrimitivePete on May 05, 2024, 05:40:25 PM
Hi all, I just got this bow and I'm trying to determine what the riser is made of, seller said he thought it was cherry but to me it almost looks like yew, any thoughts ?

I can’t say for sure that it’s cherry, but it does look very much like it, to me.  I’m virtually positive that it is not Yew, at least not Western Yew.  The grain on all the yew I work with is so tight you can hardly count the rings, often even with a magnifying glass. Sorry, can’t help you beyond that.

Contact the bowyer with serial number. They should have that info.

What does the riser weigh? Cherry is a relatively light wood compared to most of the exotic woods bows are often made from.

Yes I would say the riser is light in weight

I'd say it's cherry also but yew is light weight too.
