I was planning on hunting for 5 days in Canada, but after passing up four smaller bears a mature boar showed up 45 minutes prior to dark. He came from behind me, and I first saw him at 100 yards. He came in slowly and sat on his haunches multiple times checking the wind. Eventually he relaxed and came in directly under my stand toward a bait setup. His presences caused a lesser bear to flee. He turned from quartering away to facing me straight on. He took two steps in my direction, then turned to my right and presented a broadside shot at 12 yards. The Doug fir arrow tipped with a 250 gr three blade VPA passed completely through his chest and flipped end-over-end as the bear turned and fled. I could hear the string from the TradTracker wine as he fled, but it was soon replaced with the sounds of labored breathing as the bear expired about 50 yards away. Mike

the Hide squared 7 feet 5 inches with head in, and the skull green measured 20 7/16 inches. The meat will be put to great use for the family. Mike

Great bear Mike! Congratulations! I hunted Manitoba once five years ago and I can't get back there soon enough. From what I have heard of Stickflingers, I'd hunt there every year if I could.

Great pictures, and a Very Nice Bear, congratulations.

Once again Mike, you did good; helluva bear!

Thanks for fixing photo Terry. I re-injured my shoulder, so my shooting confidence has diminished slightly. Last season I used Norm Parks TradTracker for deer, turkey and bear where stand or blind hunting is appropriate. Sometimes you see gaps in the blood spots, but the string tells me where the bear ran. Even though he did not go far, I couldn't believe the tight spots in the brush he ran through. The saplings and slashings must have just bent away as he charged through. As I learn, information like this can help with tracking even when no string is used. Once I use a string spool once at an animal, I use the remaining string in the spool for practice shots at 3-D targets.

Once you go back and wind up the spent string from the woods, you realize the string volume in one of these little spindles.

Nice looking bear. Congratulations. :clapper:

Congratulations Mike. What bow did you use ? Specs?
-
Congrats on a great experience and thanks for sharing
-
Congratulations on the nice bear, Mike.
-
Frassettor - My bow was a Brian Wessel made recurve bow from Wessel Archery 64", 55#@31, Arrows are tapered Doug Fir from WUDARAZ, with 5" four fletch, with 250 gr VPA 3 blade, total arrow 740 gr. I don't see the 250 gr glue-ons on the VPA site anymore, in which case I'll use the 190 gr on woodies.

Congratulations again Mike! Beautiful bear my friend.

Mike always comes through. Now that he's fully retired, we hope to see a lot more great threads and pictures from him. This one kills me as I was supposed to share a ride up with him for this same hunt and had to back out at the last minute because of situations beyond my control. Put it this way... I've not backed out of many other hunts in my life. Ha. bw

I'm in the shoulder recovery boat, as well. Dropped to 60# and below, hope to work back up in weight. After full retirement next year bear hunting is a prime candidate for some of my time.
