Not necessarily a problem. Where in the stave is it?

This is a bow I built a few years ago...

The crack at the upper edge of the stave above the knot could be more of a problem if not handled properly.

Thanks for your reply Pat, appreciated. What do you suggest for small crack near edge? Also has anyone used ordinary pva to apply snakeskin backing ? I normally use titebond 3 and have used EA 40 couple times.

I would try to remove it either by laying out the bow so that crack is off the bow or reduce that area of the side by working from the left to right as not to split it out.
When laying out your bow be sure to place the old check(discolored) as close to the center of the limb as you can.
Where in the stave is that old check?
I've use TBII and TBIII for snake skins and if I had nothing else I'd use regular TB or even Elmers Glue-all. I now use and prefer hide glue for skins and rawhide backings.

Fill that with Ca glue and it’ll be just fine. It’ll be just fine without it but the glue give me you a smooth surface to finish.
I wish I had better pictures but this one has about as much superglue as wood in it. Lots of drying and splitting cracks. Shoot some glue in and squeeze it shut. I’m kinda surprised it held but it did.

Thanks again Pat, always appreciate your knowledge. Main crack is almost dead center. That outside ‘crack’ I now think is discolouration . Lightly sanded it and it disappeared. Back of bow is still in rough shape after ring chasing and hasn’t been tidied up at all.We don’t have Elmers here tomy knowledge, so will probably go with titebond again.Limited in choices where I reside these days. Nice bow by the way too.

Thanks Kyle. Your and Pat’s bows give me plenty of confidence in going on with this one of mine. Sure is a ‘snakey’ too!
