Title: Shout out to Big Jim!
Post by: Mike Bolin on July 04, 2024, 05:56:43 PM
For the past several years I have shot either Beman or Easton carbons from all of my bows. Having dropped in bow weight over the last couple of years I found that I needed to drop from my 400 and 500 spine carbons to a 600 spine shaft. I looked a bit and couldn't find the 6.5 Easton Bowhunter shaft in a 600. I spoke with big Jim at Cloverdale last month and he suggested I try his Dark Timber shafts. I bought a dozen while at Cloverdale and tuned them to my new to me Centaur longbow. They fly great and look pretty darn good too! I've always shot a plain black shaft but the woodgrain on these looks good to me. I took some time today to weigh the finished arrows. I prefer a finished arrow weight of around 500-525 grains out of a 40ish# bow. Fletch with 3-4" parabolic cut feathers the five arrows in my quiver weigh in at 506, 506, 506.5, 507 and 507 grains. I was pleasantly surprised at how close these finished out. The next batch will be a touch heavier as I will add a 6" yellow wrap. Thanks to Big Jim for a quality product and also good luck on the bear hunt!

Yes, Jim is a great buy.  He donated 4 - 400s, 500s, and 600s of the Dark Timbers to our Laredo hunts for attendees to try.  Plus he makes some great bows.  :readit:

Thanks for the input Mike. Do you know what the gpi of the 600 raw shafts are?

Maclean, 7.9 gpi. Which for a 600 spine s pretty good considering I have some 500 spine Beemans that are 7.3 gpi.

I like the dark timbers. They hold up well to regular abuse especially when wife hits the 1” plywood used for the wall. She uses 700 spine for her 35# recurve. Making her another dozen as I type this.
