Title: Best Product for Waterproofing Tent
Post by: Burnsie on July 09, 2024, 01:31:57 PM
My tent has served me well for many trips to Colorado and locally. It's been through some pretty nasty rain storms and kept us bone dry.  That is up until the latest trip.  I got some water starting to make its way through the floor and dripping through some of the seams on the rain fly.  I am almost done applying seam sealer to all the stitching on both the tent and fly, but I'm wondering what has worked best for you guys for recoating the fabric. I've been looking at the Atsko product called Sno-Seal Water-Guard Extreme.  They are the company that makes the Sno-Seal product for waterproofing your boots.  This stuff seems to be the real deal, but there are a ton of different products out there to spray on your tent.

I use Askov silicone Guard spray on my tents and blinds. Works good for me.

Not all manufactures use the same fabric, or treatment.  It depends on how it was treated originally. According to some experts, they are either silicone or Polyurethane treated. It might be best to contact the manufacture.   That said, REI recommends Nikwax Tent or Gear SolarProof. To Quote an REI expert:

"Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof® is a safe product to use on your outdoor equipment. It is water-based, non-flammable, contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is fluorocarbon free. Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof® provides Durable Water Repellency (DWR) and ultraviolet (UV) protection."
