Hopefully I don't get burned at the stake for this post :biglaugh:
I've been recently playing around with shooting vanes (non trad vanes) from my Belcher Patriot recurve, anyone else shooting this combination (Flipper rest and vanes
) ?. If so what flipper rest brand are you using ?. And what style and length of vanes ?.
-
I've never used either. Never saw a need to use either.
BTW, what is the bale made of you are shooting into?
-
I did back in the 1980’s. I just prefer woodies and shooting off the shelf. No reason to catch flack for it. I mean I would rather see someone shoot a completely tricked out recurve with sights than feel that they “must” go to a compound or crossbow because of other people’s criticisms. If you enjoy it, no reason not to

Yep on the above. I've never use them, rest or plastic/rubber veins and also don't see a need for either. However, other's might so no worries.
-
That is why they still make them.
-
Same as witherstick...tried both in the 80's as a rain set up but soon lost interest in those pain in the ... flipper rest
Dang things go south at the least opportune time

I figure my bow shelf is always going to be there. Done!!!

Living on the wet side of Washington state I have used vanes on and off for years. I have used a flipper rest but prefer a Bear Weather rest if not shooting off the shelf. In cold weather the plastic shroud over the wire on a flipper rest sometimes sqeeked and cost me a few opportunities at critters. Also I thought the Bear Weather rest held my arrow better.
Good luck to ya, Ken

I did many many years ago after my compound days. They arrows flew straight and easy to tune but they are doing the same with my feathers and out of the shelf. A rest can always brake.
-
Half of the arrows in my quiver are bare shafts until they get broadheads in hunting season, so vanes don't interst me and the best flipper rest is a NAP. Trying different things keep life interesting!
-
In 2019 I used vanes on a trip to Kodiak Island. I used my standard brush rest and they shot well and everything worked out.
-
Only reason I don’t use vanes more is I have a closet full of feathers. But I did make up a dozen arrows for the new Widow with vanes. As for rests, I use the old fashioned brush rest. I modify it to sit closer to the shelf. I had one fail once since 1972 and that was because the tape failed in the heat. As I side note, I watched Bill Matlock shoot arrows with vanes off his LB, no rest, just the shelf. He just had the nock point higher than normal. Vanes and raised rests have been around since JC was messcook on the Ark.
-
I played around with vanes with the NAP and Bear rest on an ILF rig. Both shot good and were extremely quiet. For no particular reason I didn’t stay with them or the ILF

...

It's an excelsior bale (shredded wood). Pretty pricey, if you can find them.
-
Thanks JC.

By the end of the 1970's, store bought arrows with feathers, were nearly impossible to find.
In the 1980's, that's all we used. Aluminium arrows with vanes, a Bear Weatherest, and screw in points.
Was it the best? NO! But we killed deer... Lots of them. :archer:

I have a bunch of vanes, I want to set my b mag up for vanes. They were good enough for Paul Shaffer I guess they will be good enough for me.
-
Havnt shot vanes in since the 79/80s.
But about a year or so ago I bought a Black Widow PSA that had a weatherest on it. The seller offered to replace it with a shelf rest but I said no, I’d like to try it as is.
I did and I’m getting really good flight with it.
But my other bows are shot off the shelf, so just for consistency I’ll probably go back to all off the shelf.
-
I tried em but saw no advantage. And I love those bales. I bought 4 of them 2 years ago. They will last a trad guy forever. They were salty though. The shipping was more than the bales. LOL
-
I have used both mostly to combat the rain. But since retiring I refuse to hunt in the rain :biglaugh:

No vanes here, but I used to shoot off the shelf, and arrow flight was lousy... porpoising that wouldn't go away. Someone well-known in the bowyering world asked me if I had a callous on my string-hand 4th finger. When I told them I did, they told me that was indicative of a high elbow, and therefore causing downward movement on the shaft at release, resulting in excessive contact at the bow shelf. They suggested to try shooting with a rest, so I did... and my arrows flew like darts immediately. I've been using a rest exclusively since at least 2007, and have never had one fall off or get damaged. It is odd to me that so many poo-poo them.

I’ve been shooting long bows almost exclusively this summer. But as I looked at my bows today, I came to the conclusion that I wanted them set up as close to the same as possible. To me that meant ditching the Bear Weatherest so I could get the arrow as close to my bow hand as possible.(just like my longbows).
So I ripped that sucker off, stuck a couple of pieces of Velcro on, reset my nock point and off to my little private range I went. I could not believe how well my David Lawson made arrows flew out of my Tall Tines recurve. I am very protective of the few Wliderness Custom arrows that I have left. David made some beautiful arrows for me.
So I’m back in the fold.

I am a really big fan of the Hoyt Hunter and Bear Weather rests. As for vanes I've tried several but the two that I have had the best luck with are Blazers and the 4 inch Duravanes, both fletched with as much helical as I can.
-
Cody,
As we know I’m a longbow guy —-
But when I shoot Recurves. , which I still do quite often , all of them have a Flipper or Springy and are shooting Vanes

I hunted in the grouse woods on Saturday, actively walking through scrubby trees and brush... and 10 minutes after I got into the woods, I went to take a shot and my rest was busted off. I'm almost certain I caught it on a tree or brush as I walked through. Major bummer, it ruined my hunt. It was a different type of rest than I've used previously, on a bow I recently set up. I will always shoot a rest, that's a necessity for me... but now I'll always have a spare. First time that's ever happened.
-
Yep, I always have a Bear rest on my Widow and have more recently started going to vanes more (trad vanes). Three fletch 4” seem to fly just as good as my feathers and they’re quieter, both in flight and if I happen to brush against them. I won’t say I’ve totally converted but they’ve been showing up in my quiver more.
