Title: Degreasing before glue up
Post by: Lee Lobbestael on August 27, 2024, 09:55:36 AM
I Have heard multiple different answers to this question from experienced bowyers. who here degreases their lams before glue up? If so, what do you use? I have degreased with denatured alcohol in the past but mostly I dont degrease at all.

Acetone on the glass, compressed air on the wood.

Never on wood. Just rough sanding to give the surface a dull look - shiny surface is bad 😙

Glass has lots of fine dust that a shop towel and acetone remove well- wire brush on lams freshly ground- let them sit too long oxidation takes it course:)

I agree with Stagmitis , Although i do not use a wire brush. i agree with freshly sanded surfaces on wood to be the best, and never use any type of solvents on wood. i use acetone on glass, carbon, and phenolic.

On a side note.... When grinding tapers, par's, and other lams, to include veneers, to be used at a later date, stacking them tightly with a cover lam will help with oxidization. If the lams start turning a shade darker, it's always a good idea to touch sand them before using them.   Kirk
