Gloss paint is the most durable but you can always spray satin poly over the glossy paint to cut the shine.

I use the flat camo paint. I also go to thrift stores, and yard sales and buy the old non shiny green Christmas garland and old Christmas trees, wrap the garland around the ladder rails and use the Christmas tree branches around the bottom of the platform to break up the outline.

I've used primer, which dries to a flat finish, and also leftover high heat bbq paint, which also dries to a flat finish when repainting and touching up.  Also did the garland trick, attaching with black ty wraps to break it up a bit.
