Got back a few weeks ago from a hunting trip in Far North Queensland …
The goal was a a Scrub Bull , to many the most dangerous animal in Oz … plus lots of pigs and good fishing …
It’s about as remote as you can get , and for this southern boy leaving home on the first day of travel we had snow … a few hrs later , by plane , I landed on the tropics . A 9 hr drive had us unpacking on the mighty Mitchell River … home to Salt Water Crocodiles, Bull Sharks , fresh water crocs … and the mighty and amazingly tasty barramundi …
Hunting in the tropics is so different and the vastness of the area , the heat , the potentially dangerous game all around ….
Well , twas an adventure I tells ya
Black Widow and Poison Dart Longbows were my bows of choice . Wooden arrows tipped with Ribteks , Ace and Cutthroat …a few AXIS and a bunch of vintage alloy 2016’s that I have had at hand since 1992 … purchased as a youngster for adventures to come. Oh how time flies yet comes full circle .
10 days to remind myself that life is the best life when it’s the longbow life ….

Well Done Sir! That looks like the ingredients for great memories.

Congratulations, seems like you had a time up North.

Great photos Ben! I am jealous, but in a good way. Happy for ya
Looks like a great place to hunt. Do you stay in a tent, cabin, RV, must be a challenge to protect edible meat.
I’d like to hear more of this hunt.

Wow... nice to see there's a part of Australia where a man can still be a man! Not that I doubted it... Looks like a great place to be and spend some real time in. Might have to give that a try one day!

? I’m not sure what you mean ?
We can hunt year round , lots of differing species , no bag limits .
We men , and women , do okay . Lots to hunt irrespective of whether trad, wheels or firearms.

Ben, good stuff and photos. I remember you bought some heavy spine and weight hardwood shafts from me. Is that what you use mostly, what weight bow were you using. I recently bought some Surewood Hunter Shafts, below their premium shafts. They are for a 45 lb LH longbow I made. I was impressed by their quality. The 32" shafts weighed 420 to 430 grains. They were pretty straight, with moderate grain runout. I used a small metal hook to compression straighten some and the spin like a premium shaft. Would recommend them in a heavy weight arrow. What time of year is best for hunting up north?

Hey HUD …
I cant remember ! :biglaugh: Maybe it was Ben Kleinig who bought them ?
Those Surewoods are dandy eh !
My bow was 50#@29” and the shafts on the bull and some of the boar fell to Surewoods … 560-625gns. The heavier for the bull

Where's the pic of you dangling your toes in the water?

Well done! some nice hunting there.
I'm confused though, 'Darling river'? The only Darling river I know about is nowhere near FNQ.

Great stuff Ben,
Looks like you and Neale had a great time. Then again, any adventure with longbow in hand, is a great time.
Hope you're keeping well my friend.
Steve.
