Today marks the anniversary of Jack Howard's passing in 2005. Jack was a amazing bowyer and many popular bow were patterned after his original design.

Wow! Been that many years ago already. He sure made some beautiful bows. His catalog was like reading a “how to” , everything from sharpening broadheads to making arrows. Wonder what finally happened to his forms and wood stock? That Vermillion is on the do not import list now.

He made beauteous bows that performed. I wish whoever has his forms and wood would make bows again.

Though we never actually met I call him a friend and I miss our correspondence. Jack bought his materials in quantity and when possible he purchased generic products... probably to save some money. When his supply of string material was running low he went to his usual supplier they were no longer in business (it had been that long). I was able to find a new source for his special material and that cemented our relationship.
I truly believe Jack's Gamemaster Classic is the most accurate, forgiving bow I've ever shot.
As a western hunter
Jack was head and shoulders above the rest. He'd go out and with a special lightweight camp he'd live with the animals. studying them until he knew the habits of the animal he wanted before making a move on them.

Like Charlie, I miss corresponding with Jack. I got to know him well only a few years before he passed. His bows were works of art that shot even better than they looked. As a hunter he was extremely successful. His catalog was like a bowhunter’s Sear’s Christmas catalog. And he didn’t sell anything that he did not personally test. He could be opinionated but he truly knew his stuff.

I once asked him to build me a bow with some different woods lams I wanted. He laughed and said "no". :biglaugh: He said he tested all the wood combinations and that's all he used was what he made his bows with. I do have one with black glass, maybe two. And another with carbon. So he strayed a little. :archer2:
