Hey guys. Haven’t posted here in a good while, but I see lots of familiar names are still here. Just purchased a mint condition RER Vital made by Kevin TerMaat, but the seller was not sure of the woods (he purchased it from the original owner). I’m thinking the riser is dark bocote and the limbs are quilted maple, but am looking to see if anybody can verify. Now to remember how to post pics! :biglaugh:

.

I think the riser is wenge?
-
Very well could be. A friend has a bow that is wenge and it does look similar. Will know better when I get my hands on it.
-
I second Wenge riser.
I have a RER Arroyo from Kevin and it’s still in mint condition all Bocote .
Great bows when Kevin owned the company and it’s a shame the new owners don’t seem to be making them anymore .
Not sure what happened but the Arroyo was my favorite and I killed my biggest buck with mine .

Wenge riser, curly maple limb veneers
-
Wenge riser and either spalted maple or tamo ash limbs would be my guess.
Nice looking bow either way. One I've never heard of.
-
Ive been on the look out for an arroyo in my specs off and on for years, would love to get my hands on one.
-
Longtoke, I really didn't need another bow, but I love my RERs so much, and a lefty in my specs is as rare as hens' teeth. had to bite the bullet and snatch it up!

it does look a lot like the pics of tamo ash that I have seen.

Could be Quilted Maple.

Could be Quilted Maple.
Yep

When I stated "Curly", I meant quilted ...... typed too fast or brain too slow :biglaugh:
Curely and sometimes or especially in the musical instrument world, Curely will be called "flamed" and shows as those beautiful stacked lines of contrast. Your limbs are more the swirly clouds that QUILTED shows as. So anyways, I'm saying your limbs are quilted maple

The darker tone could be that the bowyer hit them prior to glue up with stain to get that rich caramel/chocolate color. Beautiful whatever the case may be. I have 3 bows that are natural color curly maple veneers back and belly. I have a weakness for that maple. If I were ordering one right now, I'd be getting curly maple on the limbs. Quilted ain't too shabby either :bigsmyl:

I agree with Look.
How much do you want for it. :goldtooth:

beautiful.

100% wenge for the riser. Limbs most likely tamo ash. Could possibly be some nice sapele.

Those are scary looking risers. :o :o :o Wenge is very stiff , very brittle wood. But it splits easily if not reinforced or used with a footing.
Hopefully they are low draw weight... Who built those?
-
" Wenge is very stiff , very brittle wood"
I've heard the same Kirk.
I also know a bowyer, from 20 years ago that used wenge as his cores as he claimed they were the fastest core he ever used. Don' know if that is true or not, but he sure believed it. I believe wenge is also referred to at 'black palm'.
-
Kirk,
Those two bows are early Wing (White Wings) and that Wenge I recently sold to a good friend and he “Thinks “ he has first dibs on the other one but he doesn’t :biglaugh:
Both are in the mid 30# weight range and shoot so smooth .

Terry ,
Funny you should say that about Wenge being referred to as Black Palm .
I had some scrap pieces of wood that came from the PRS guitar shop from his shop here in Md. that was going into a burn pile from one of his employees .
It had Black Palm written on it and I said No. that’s Wenge wood which I do believe is the same wood or very much alike in grain structure.
I’m with Kirk also I think it needs an I beam or glued up with something else so it doesn’t get checks or cracks .
I do love the looks and color or it when sistered up with a lighter wood .
-
Darn it I quoted myself and meant to quote Terrys reply to Kirk :biglaugh:
Anyway I agree as well that Wenge needs to be sistered up with another wood and an I beam would be great .
Forgive me fellas I’m catching up with you all in this age thing

thanks for all the info, guys! My new bow is sitting at the post office in town, while those guys enjoy their day off. :biglaugh:
very much worth an extra day's wait, in order to remember the service of all our veterans today! thanks to all who served.

Well, I’d say that’s a pretty nice stable of RERs. :bigsmyl:
Bottom-Top: Retro (wenge and tiger wood), LXR (Ziricote and brown glass), Vital (wenge and most likely tamo ash).
The new Vital is a thumper. 52#28” and I draw about 29”. Good stuff!
