Set up for 4 1/2 days of deer hunting in the mountains of Allegheny County. Snow and wind expected but it has been unseasonably warm rut. Hoping for some luck. Most invited bailed out except for my brother and another fellow TG’r arriving tomorrow. Good to get away into the real world. The WX may get some bucks moving. That is a very neat camp, I think you will use the stove... keep up updated on hunt.

Good looking camp...My luck I would end up starting a fire in all those leaves around the stove :o

Nothing this evening. Raining now gusts to 45 mph tonight. Calling for snow tomorrow evening. We’ll see. Cold weather should get them moving. Tomorrow will calm and be a good shot. Cozy tonight in the wall tent with smoke dragon fired up!
-
What’s in that brown bottle at the back of the tent?
-
Less than there was last night… :biglaugh:

Had a great morning. Saw 6 different bucks and one was a doozy. Unfortunately the shots never presented themselves. Had a spike at 10 yards and a small 6 at 15 from me in the packseat. Supposed to get up to an inch of snow tomorrow and I’ll be back there. Hope luck shines. All my buds bailed so ai am in this big wall tent solo. Tomorrow is another day.

I seriously don’t know how Greg isn’t 300lbs with the way he feeds us at camp. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Morning on the mountain had some tracking snow. I found a great set up for the waldrop. Dang doe came from behind me and caught my wind at bow length away. Later a spike showed up and didn’t have a clear shot through the vines until he was too close and picked me out. After a foot stomp and some feigned attempts to get me to move he moved downwind and that was that.
This afternoon we hit some clearcut around camp in the sleet. I kicked a 6 point that ran toward EVG but alas it never showed for him.
Steady rain now but we had some good food and we’ll see how it is in the morning.

Weather has been windy and raw. This morning was was set up watching two converging trails on joining ridges in the clearcut I saw the 6 in the rain yesterday. Then right at 7:20 here come another compound hunter with his bow strapped on his back as his girl walked behind him about 5 yards back. I waved and he looked confused and did a triple take probably wondering why i had a longbow, plaid, and white feathers. Anyway, no action after that.
Got close to a spike I worked up on sneaking along a edge this evening. He had a bad limp but I couldn’t work closer to about 35 yards as he was walking away. The wind probably ticked him off after i last lost sight of him. I did manage to scare a few squirrels today though. Tough hunting this public land.
Well, last night out. Tomorrow I pack up after breakfast.
-
“Scare a few squirrels,” is a blatant misrepresentation. More like gave those squirrels a haircut and a fear of man. The only thing you “missed” was the pheasant that you almost hit with your car! :biglaugh:
In all seriousness, if anyone is ever fortunate enough to get the invite to Greg’s annual deer camp, do not turn it down. It’s great hunting with even greater hospitality!
-
The public hunting land you’re hunting is wild and vast…
But Greg won’t steer you wrong about where to hunt.
It’s hard hunting with a bow (I could have easily taken the deer I saw with my .270). But the camaraderie can’t be matched!
-
Hey, that’s a nice bow there! :biglaugh:
-
Looks like a blast fellas.

I see a bag of charcoal….are you using that on a grill or in your woodstove? If in the wood stove I’m interested to know how that works out…assuming to get an all night heat with coals in the morning?

Ryan, I have never put a whole bag in there to try to last the night, but i have read about some advising that.
I use the charcoal to speed up preheating the stove using my chimney and shoveling the hot coals in. Then all I need to do is out in some full sized logs and turn down the air and flu.
I have found that a full load of wood will drive you out of the tent unless it is arctic out. I would assume a whole load of charcoal would also be crazy hot.
After i get the bed of colas and stove hot, i found one long big log will last the longest without making it a sweat lodge. Get 5 or 6 good hours and maybe 2 more but it will start to get chilly.
-
Thanks! Yeah I didn’t figure you’d put the whole bag in there :biglaugh: makes sense, getting the stove to draw faster using a bit of charcoal first, makes the wood burn better.
Thanks!
