Just looking for opinions and input on coming back after shoulder replacement. I’ve been out of the game for a few years just got a new shoulder and am wanting to order a new bow. For those who have come back after a new shoulder is 51 pounds realistic. I used to shoot 59 pound long bow and a 58 pound widow.

Smokin Joe has had both of his replaced, he's going to LTR for two weeks soon.
Lots of info if you do a search, just make sure you click advanced search and chose your best options.

I will do that thanks

My brother, Wyoming Chief, has had both replaced too. He is a bulldog on therapy and is back shooting 45# stick bows. It is doable.

Ya pt is important my surgeon keeps stressing that over doing is as bad as under doing so I’m trying my best to follow the rules but it’s hard when I can see that there is a chance to shoot a bow again, it’s been 5 years since I lost the cartilage in my shoulder and had to quit shooting.

I didn’t have a full replacement, but pretty extensive surgery on both of mine. Picked up the stick again after a few years off. I was shooting 60 pre surgery. I’m playing around with a an old tiger cat in the high 40’s now. I can finally lift again, but it’s pretty depressing, lol.
If you haven’t already, tell the PT your goals. My last PT was able to give me some specific strengthening exercises when I told her I wanted to be able to shoot my bow. Had to go to wheels for a while…but, whatever.

How long ago was the surgery? I started out at 25 pounds 6 months after the surgery and worked my way back up. Killed 2 bucks with 38 lbs 7 months post surgery. Don't rush it. I am back to 53 lbs now.

No hurry. You do not need 59 lbs to get back in the game. Get close.

I am only 7 weeks post op. No pt allowed at this time. Just exercises and stretching at home. He has a pretty strict regiment to follow with excellent results, he doesn’t usually use a pt unless he is seeing unsatisfactory results from the workouts at home.
Hoping to shoot the local Father’s Day shoot, and get back to elk hunting this fall. Haven’t shot an elk in 6 years really wanting to get back to bow hunting.

I had my right shoulder replacement back in July (I'm right handed). I started PT about 2 weeks post-op with the goal of bow hunting by November. I worked on stretching religiously at home on days that I didn't have PT and sometimes several times a day! To say I was motivated is an understatement as I had a brand new Black Widow KBX hanging on the wall that I picked up the second week of August.
Fast forward to October and I was slinging arrows with a 30# Bear Bearcat that an old army buddy gave me. By the middle of October I could pull the Widow, but only a few times and using an unorthodox method of drawing. I did manage to get a doe in November with the Bearcat. I could draw the Widow (48#) the end of November without problems. My doc was ecstatic with my progress and told me I was a model patient for shoulder replacement surgery. I don't know about all that, but I'm pleased with my results. I'm still not 100% strength wise, but range of motion is!
My main advice is don't push it too quickly!
Good luck, shoot straight and God bless,
Rodd

Ya my surgery was Nov 12. I’ve got a full 180 degree of flexion. I am onto strength training now. I also have a new widow I just received yesterday, a 45 pound pma carbon with g10 riser. And have a pma ll at 41 to shoot also. Hoping to shoot the Father’s Day shoot (maybe) and be hunting elk in September.

If all goes well I might order some 50 pound limbs this fall. I might be going to Africa and thought I might up my poundage.

I’ve had both shoulders replaced with the reverse replacement. The bow side shoulder replacement was a longer recovery than the string side. I can shoot from both sides left 45 comfortably and right 40. I’m over a year out on my right replacement. Good luck!
-
Ya my replacement is on my bow arm and I was thinking it might take longer. I haven’t found much info on my style of replacement, I had a ream and run shoulder replacement due to my age.
-
Surgeon is letting me hit the gym again. Getting some strength back, it’s still pretty hard to lift my arm above my head. Got a new widow delivered a week ago so I’ve got some motivation.

How old are you, if you don't mind me asking?

I am 52 years old. My shoulder has been cartilage on cartilage for 5 years it’s taking a while to come back still no where near shooting a bow. Hopefully in a month or so.
My procedure was a ream and run. No plastic parts or limitations when healed

At 51, I broke my shoulder in a pretty ugly e-bike crash. I was about an hour away from surgery to get it screwed back together when a 2nd doctor walked in and recommended against it. I took it real slow and let it heal before trying anything with a bow... it took me about a year before I was shooting again. I'll be 54 in a couple months and my shoulders are stronger than they've ever been, and I'm shooting a 67# bow more comfortably now than I ever have. My advice is to take it slow, there's no reason to risk your entire archery future by starting a few months too early.
-
No I’ve come to realize that. I have made pretty good improvement the last couple weeks. I strung up my new black widow and gave it a try. I can draw it pretty good. I do have difficulty holding the bow up. But would guess in a month I should be shooting.

Funny this thread popped back up again. I jacked my shoulder up again a couple days ago in the gym (about 7 years post surgery on that one). Hoping its just bad inflammation from doing stuff I hadn’t been doing and it heals on its own, as it is more of an annoyance at this point.
All that to say, take it slow. Like molasses in winter time.

I had surgery at thanksgiving time I didn't have replacement but have 3 screws in the ball joint and cables put in plus a spur and arther removed . I did a lot of pt and am now shooting about a dozen arrows a day from my 48 to 50 lb. bows . I wouldn't want to go through a replacement .

Not sure the surgery itself was hard to get over but getting my shoulders and shoulder blade to work together again has been taking some time. It’s been six years of not working right, the surgeon said it will come back just need to do the work and be patient. Can’t lie it’s been 4 months of 3-6 times a day of pt at home and when progress is slow it is hard to keep after it, but will pay off soon.
Seeing as I booked an African archery hunt in a year and a half.
