Title: What's in your pack?
Post by: robtattoo on February 19, 2007, 12:19:00 PM
Okay, so you're going for a good long days huntin', say, 8 hours minimum. What would you normally take along with you?

P.S.
You're limited to either a small daypack or fannypack  :D

Rob thats a good question, for me where Im hunting dictates what I carry. For example, if I'm in a remote wilderness area or a fly in type hunt, I would always carry: topo map, GPS, small pen type flare gun and flares, water purification tablets or my Katadyn filter, emergency blanket and fire starting devices, first aid kit, whistle. This is above the must haves such as items listed by others above. For a local hunt I carry very little, knife, rope, water, snacks.

waterproof matches
TP in a ziplock bag
band-aids
electrical tape
2 buttons---1 black, 1 green
GPS
and a couple of sandwiches

I'm just assuming you wanted to know whats in the pack, so I excluded my canteen and the other peripherals like a knife and such.

If I can’t get in my possible bag or pockets it doesn’t go. Some trail mix, 16 oz. water, matches, and tags. In my pocket are a watch and a pocket knife. I have enough problems carrying my fat butt around already.

I'm a park ranger and can say with some  experience that its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!
My standard work/hunting outfit is just about the same:
First aid kit (not the store bought package)
     space blanket
     fire starters
     leatherman
stocking cap (orange, I like to help my friends in a chopper find me)
     windbreaker/rain coat
     energy bars
     lots of water
     100' of parachute cord
     GPS & compass,maps
My boss, either at work or the wife know generally where I'm going.
Oh yeah, most importantly is a generous amount of applied horse sense. Many of those I've had to go find had little gear and less common sense!
As a final thought;I'm supplied a radio at work but find that a cell phone can be real iffy.Don't rely on it unless you know for sure that it will work EVERYWHERE you intend to go.

Chuck,
You hit right.  Basicly there are some things that always stay in my pack.  My little survival kit, water, some type of food, flashlight, to many knives, hopefully the new one will take the place of 2  :D , thanks Rob!  But if I'm treestandin' or groundblindin' whitetails, or chasing the antelope, my pack is empty compared to if I'm going after elk.

Yeppers...... I carry Soooo much stuff in the mountains, but almost nothing to the treestand in Wisconsin.  Water and a knife, compass and a mini- mag.  Probably should carry more, but I guess I got lazy.

One thing I see missing in every list is a whistle. They weigh next to nothing, take up no space to speak of, but can save yer butt if you get hurt. The sound carries much further than your voice yelling for help, and a whistle doenst get worn out. I recommend it to everyone.

Another item I carry for fire starter is a short road flare. They will light easily even in wind or rain, and burn hot for a long time after lighting. Almost impossible to put out. Will get a fire going in a hurry in an emergency.

As for all the other stuff, it depends on where I'm hunting. Obviously while elk hunting in the wilderness I carry more than if I'm out for an evening deer hunt.

Regardless, the minimum I carry a small pouch with first aid stuff, whistle and flare, knife, a couple zip lock bags,a couple power bars and some water. Oh yeah, some TP too!

Rob,

This thread comes up about 27 times a year but it's because it is such a frequently asked question that I have gone an inventoried my base hunting pack.  The contents are are follows:

Most importantly my common sense is packed first...that tells me I'll need the following in the field:
Optics
1.   Binocs: Steiner 8 by 30 Night hunter

Water
1.   Camelbak 102 ounce hydration bladder

Navigation & Communication
1.   GPS Garmin Rino 530, includes a FRS 2 way radio, Weather Service Radio, altimeter, digital compass and GPS capability
2.   Cammenga Tritium Military compass
3.   Waterproof Topo Map of area I’m hunting

Cutlery
1.   Knives of Alaska Light Hunter Combo, includes a skinning/field dressing knife and a small detail caping knife.
2.   Small Hatchet
3.   Hack Saw blade wrapped in Duct tape handle
4.   Diamond based sharpener tool
5.   Gerber model 700 Urban Legend multi-tool (Leatherman)

First Aid Kit
1.   Kit for emergencies, including sutures, pain-killer and the normal first aid stuff.  Keep it small.

Emergency Bag
1.   One heavy weight plastic trash bag (rain poncho, water collection etc.)
2.   One unbreakable signal mirror & Whistle
3.   MSR Miox emergency water purification system
4.   Fire Starter (commercial fire tabs or petroleum soaked cotton balls)
5.   Magnesium based fire starter and disposable butane lighter
6.   Foil based Space Blanket (emergency warmth & lay out quarters on after field butchering)
7.   50’ Para cord & Military poncho for shelter
8.   Heavy Duty Needle/Thread
9.   30’ 3/8” rope and mountaineering pulley wheel
10.   1 sealed baggie containing moist baby wipes

Food
1.   WWII vintage canteen cup w/ attached cook stove, & fuel tabs
2.   dry soup & hot chocolate powders
3.   Trail mix, nuts, candy bars etc.

Miscellaneous
1.   License, tags, waterproof pen, pencil & paper
2.   spare batteries & bulb
3.   extra bow string & finger tab
4.   small roll surveyor’s tape
5.   Digital camera
6.   Zippered cotton pillow cases or Game Quarters Bags

Optional (Depending on climate, conditions & activity)
1.   Tripod and Spotting scope
2.   Packable Rain Gear

This "stuff", including the full load of water loaded into my Badlands 2200 pack tops out at 26 lbs.  You don't want to hump too much more than that all day in the tall country.  I disagree with the opinion expressed above that too much is better than not enough.  My experience is that too much is a very bad thing and will hurt you more than help.

Oh yeah,  the Badlands 2200 has a built in Flourescent Orange Meat shelf (about 2 feet square), in case I want to be found.

In this photo, I'm wearing all of the above listed items at 12,500 ft in the Colorado Rockies:

Jeff, at the end of the day I've cursed it for being heavier than when I started in the morning but I've not noticed it to be noisy.  When it comes to that critcal moment I shed the pack anyway.  Sure you can get surprised while hunting but if I have any control the pack is shed like a winter antler.  :saywhat:

I always carry a fanny pack; it has shoulder straps as well as waist belt for comfortable support.  I always use an American Leathers Hill style shoulder quiver carrying between 16 to 18 arrows (licenses are pinned to my quiver).  I just looked in my fanny pack and found the following:

one small camp saw(7" blade/6 oz.),
one roll of bright orange fluorescent surveyors tape,
push tacks with illuminated/flourescent heads,
spare leather laces (in case my quiver breaks down),
toilet paper,
a "cat hole" spade/digger,
waterproof/windproof matches with two candles   and fire starter,
leatherman tool,
four mini maglites,
one very bright LED flashlight,
one Princeton Tec 40 flashlight,
three predator calls and one crow call,
one Bear broadhead file in leather case,
one miniature first-aid kit,
one miniature survival kit and band-aids,
one small pruning shear,
parachute cord,
digest of game laws for CT and MA,
longbow stringer,
knife sharpener,
whistle (ACME Thunderer),
Lenspen by Leupold to clean binocular lenses,
emergency space blanket,
bow string wax,
folding scissors,
extra camera film,
minature thermometer,
small magnifying glass (see slivers, etc.),
a copy of "You Alone in the North Woods" (The Lost Person's Guide),
6 Advil pain pills,
small Nalgene water bottle,
cell phone (usually doesn't work though in the areas I hunt)
one or two pints of water, and
a small lunch with a couple of snacks as well.

I also carry a belt with the following:

double bit belt axe,
belt knife (either a camp knife or a skinner),
small digital camera,
compass,
bear spray,
binoculars,
topo maps are rolled and put into my quiver unless they are the folded type which then go under my shirt, and
sometimes a small camp seat goes on my belt as well.

My vehicle (a Jeep Wrangler) carries all kinds of recovery equipment, extra water, blankets, extra clothes and footgear, saws, axes, come-along, etc., and a winch as well.

I may have a few too many flashlights -- I don't mind being caught out in the woods at night -- but it works better when I have light to read my map and see where I'm at.  I'll have to re-evaluate the flashlight situation though.

Fully loaded, I am toting between 10 to 12 pounds in the fanny pack.

I hunt the coastal mountain ranges in Oregon for elk and black tail deer. My pack weighs in around 30 lbs, and have been given a hard time about it by a few hunters. This area we hunt is SO steep, and Soooooo thick with vine maple and other brush, you could get turned around 100 yards off a main road, and end up spending the night easily. i carry all the basic survival gear mentioned above except the GPS. The Whistle is a must guys. Some of the extra things i carry i haven't seen listed is :

a 20 oz.dried meal always stays in the bottom of my pack.
a small lantern and mountain climbing stove that use a small propane butain canister.
a water filtration pump
a road flare
Glow sticks...Light weight! And are life savers!
matches, fire starter, and spare batteries all sealed in seperate vacume packed packages.
jerky, chocolotte, trailmix & one Folgers one cup coffee packages. (these food items i restock daily, IF i make it back to camp.
The most important thing is ultra light rain gear. the rest is mostly creature comforts.

Weve pulled a couple guys out of those hills half dead after spending 24 hours in 42 degrees and rain before with no pack or not enough gear.

I don't believe in hunting those mountains with anything less than enough to survive a couple nights in relitive comfort. all of us carry small two way radios and never dive off into a drainage without letting someone know the general area you are heading... i hunt alone...BUT....i hunt pack heavy and safe.

I like the idea of not worrying about stuff and focus on the hunt ect. But in turn, I like to have what I need just in case . I don’t believe in carrying everything but the kitchen sink

It depends where I am, weather conditions and type of hunt.  I don't need much to walk a few hundred yards and climb into a tree stand on a warm October day hunting a small property.

On the other hand I'd carry a lot more hunting the national forest in November when I need to cover ground looking for a spot to hunt.

I get into some pretty serious back country chasing elk sometimes, so my day pack contains what I need to process a carcass and even spend a night out in the mountains away from the truck.  My pack has a large main compartment, and two smaller ones.  For a day of chasing critters that might take me far away from the truck, this is my standard load:

Outside/On straps:
Elk calls
Bear spray
Couple quart water bottles

Main pouch:
Collapsible trekking pole
A warm shirt, hat, gloves
Maps
Enough food to keep me going until after dark

After-kill pouch:
Knife (Don't like wearing a knife on my belt; it hangs up on brush when I'm stalking)
Sharpener
Pack saw
1 medium game bag for packing out the first load of meat
Blaze tape
Coil of parachord to tie elk legs out of the way while I'm cutting
2 Gallon zip locs for small game
Sharpie marker for signing tags
A lightweight blaze vest (so some idiot with a crossbow doesn't decide to take a poke at the antlers I'm packing out, and/or to make it easier for Search and Rescue to find my body if things really go down the tubes )

Emergency pouch:
Small First Aid kid
Iodine tabs for purifying water
SOL bivy sack (yep, that's a real brand name; says it all)
Spare bow string
Super glue
Small roll of gorilla tape
Small ferro rod fire starter
Butane Lighter
A few cotton balls smeared in Vaseline
SPOT
Head lamp with spare battery

Sounds like a lot, but most of these are very small items, and they all come in handy when I'm several miles from the road with a critter down, getting dark, and a storm blowing in.  Makes a manageable load.

Lone wolf assault treestand w/ 2 sticks w/ aiders
Bow w/ quiver and 3 arrows
AGC KISS bino pack
8 oz water
Tree stand straps
Bow hanger
Wind checker
Pull up rope
Clothes on my back and any extra clothes I attach to my treestand.

I leave all my field dressing and drag out stuff in the car. Usually after the kill I take all my stuff back and just come back w/ my field dressing kit.

Food/water
Toilet paper
Kill kit appropriate for whatever species I'm hunting
Flashlight
Spare bowstring and shooting glove
License/hunters ed card/permit if needed

Anything else will be dependent on season, topography, and weather.  If I'm a 15 minute walk from the truck which is 30 minutes out of town, there's no precipitation, temps and winds are stable, and I'm chasing a little ole whitetail or squirrels then I'm not lugging around ANYTHING else extra.  If I'm backpacking in 2-3 days from the trailhead into a wilderness location that's several hours from the nearest hospital by car in ideal conditions...well I'm likely to have some communication, fire making, spare clothing, first aid kit, shelter, etc.

One thing we all need in our packs....and handy so that you can grab it quick...is a stop the bleed kit.

CAT-T's, Israeli Banadages, Quick Clot....all of it.  And know how to use it. I refresh on a stop the bleed class about every 18 months. Most of the tactical competitions I do have a stage centered around applying a tourniquet quickly and continuing the fight with one arm, etc.

Think about it: We spend our time in the woods, usually alone, usually AT LEAST a brisk walk from our truck. We climb trees, use razor sharp axes, knives, not to mention broadheads. Bleeding to death 500 yards from your truck is a really dumb way to die.

If your in a wilderness area or the back country consider a pre-programed amatuer radio they work where cell phones fail.

Not a bad idea.  I have a SPOTx with a little keyboard that can send text messages via satellite.  I mostly use it to send a daily, pre-programmed message assuring Mrs. Badger that I am, in fact, still alive.     But it has an SOS button that sends out coordinates to the nearest S&A and/or sheriff's department, and you can supplement that with specific messages.  That would come in pretty handy in an emergency.  It can also receive messages from home, so if there's an emergency there I can know about it.

Of course, the potential downfall of a device like that is it can take away one of the main reasons most of us go to the back country in the first place.  I don't want Mrs. Badger contacting me to let me know that the Badgerling scraped her knee.  So we're pretty careful to use it for emergencies only.  But in an emergency?  It would be awfully nice.

I need to eventually get a pack but packs got in the way when carrying tree stands.  I wear wetlands muck boots because they are tight at top,, carry a knife and grunt in one and a tree saw in other.   Bow hooks and 2nd chance arrow clips and a pen ( mandatory in mass) are on my bow quiver...  aaa stream lite the size of a pen is in my pocket,,,, toilet paper/ blood marker is always in one of my back pockets,, and thats it..   im urban hunting though,,, i have an eye out for a decent pack that gas dual connections 1 the should straps ( huge bonus if they convert to a cross strap like bicycle messenger bags) then 2 there needs to be 4 corner rings to add very strong delrin clips to clip to a packed treestand your wearing like a backpack.  That perfect bag has yet to be found.

I hunt with the Beast Stand 75%. Hang and hunt. I sling my SlingPack over with the single strap, secure it with a bungi or paracord, works perfectly. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Sounds like we have similiar methods. I have hockey tape or Stealth Strip material on everything that can make a noise.

We designed our Sling Pack with MY hunting style in mind....sneaking into bedding areas in the afternoon...extreme quiet is required.

It depends on what I'm doing and what time of year it is.
At home while deer hunting, I carry a small fanny pack and that's about it. It will have my license, a small flashlight, a gutting knife, book of matches, a facemask, and a compass. Late season, I might put in an extra pair of gloves and a warmer.

When doing a multi-day hunt out west or something, I carry my big backpack with all of the stuff listed above, plus extra water, food, TP,  bivy and sleeping bag, tarp, extra pair of socks, and another couple of layers that I can put on if need be. I'll also carry a Zoleo for emergencies.

I put all my small items into three 7"x12" canvas, zippered pouches. First bag is for things I always need such as a knife, compass, pruner, 20' feet of twine etc. Second bag is a kill kit, dragging harness, game bags and gutting gloves. Third one is a first aid/survival kit includes space blanket, energy bar, extra hand warmers, lighter and a whistle. I also have small roll of birch bark stuffed with dryer lint as a fire starter.

it seems to me that no one ever mentions those disposable heater packs.  They don't weight much, and a couple of large ones that last 18-20 hrs sure sounds like a good idea to me.
