Tonight we are heading up to lake Gaston to do a little Carp hunting. The last time the guys went up they killed 6 fish that weighed between 52 and 61 lbs. I am going to be armed with my trusty digital camera so I hope to bring back some good pictures and stories.

Good luck sounds like a lot of fun

I've heard carp are actually pretty good eating, if you cut out the darker meat from the fillet, cut the white meat into chunks, then batter and fry.
Has anyone tried it? I'd eat them from clean water, but have never had the chance.
-
I ate carp a couple of times as a kid (about 55 years ago) and don't remember it tasting so bad. These were out of the Green River in Kentucky and it was probably a lot cleaner then most water today. Later on I saw people fishing for carp at the sewer plant in Evansville,In. and that turned me against eating them.
Scott, bring one of them over and I'll see if the wife will make you a casserole, or should that be carparole.
Just kidding there Scott, but you could bring me a carp skin.
Good Luck

That's for sure!! Barry's quiver is sweet with that carp skin on it!
-
Barry, I'm glad that you like it. It's surprising that carp skin looks so good. I purchased that tanned carp skin mostly out of curiosity, but when I saw it I was sold. It is a lot stronger than you would think, and the pattern is great. I'm looking for some more now.
You'd think that Scott and the guys would share some of those carp. I guess with kids to feed you can't just give them away. I wonder how they did? Did they get a ton of them, or just a few? I suppose anytime now Scott will start posting photos. I'm looking forward.

Ok boys I just woke up. We left at 5:30 yeasterday and rolled back in about 7:30. I am dragging. We got two monsters. I have plenty of pictures.
-
I left work a little early so we could make it out to the lake about the time it got dark. David pulled in the driveway about 5:30. This is a picture of the rig we used. There were 6 of us on this trip. David, Scooter, Jason, Tory, Seth and me. The boat was a little crowded but we made due.

We got to the boat ramp about 7:30. When we got there it was raining so we camped out in the truck until the cloud passed. Here is a picture of the boat ramp just before we put the boat in the water.

I am having a few technical problems. I will post the rest of the pictures later.

not nice to tease :D

A few tools of the trade. Pardon the bow with traing wheels. One of the kids was using this one. That PSE coyote is one of the best fish bows made. The other 2 were old bears still in service.

To give you guys an idea of how big these fish can get...This one weighed 56 pounds. We had to get three arrows in him to get him in the boat. That Jason in the picture.

Here is one of the three catfish we shot. This one weighed 18 pounds. Had to get two arrows in this one to get him in the boat.

Nice fish. Bet that cat was some good eating. MMMMmmmm.

Thanks for sharing.
Todd
-
Scott, what are you doing with the fish? I'd like to try skinning and tanning both catfish and carp.
-
Nice story and thanks for sharing the pics.
Not sure, but I believe in Ohio it is breaking the rules to shoot game fish with a bow. I am no fisherman nor an NC conservation officer and maybe catfish are not considered a game fish??? Check your NC game laws to be safe.
-
NC is like Alabama...they dont consider catfish gamefish.
-
yeah we do things a little different down here in the south :p Texas is allowing us to shoot catfish as well. Catfish are a gamefish, but they are making a special exception for a trial period.
yall should see it in louisiana. They dont care what you shoot, red fish, flounder, sheeps head, you name it!
