Title: footed shaft question-wood
Post by: tradwannabe on August 06, 2008, 03:24:00 PM
Hi all,
has anyone made a footed shaft with ebony or lignum vitae? this is the heaviest wood there is (I'm sure there are others also). Will it allow bending or is it soo stiff that it would just break?
anyone??

I would not use Ebony, very brittle and hard to glue, Lignum Vitae ia a great choice if you can find it.  They use it for shaft bearings on ships.

Nothing wrong with Ebony as a footing material, I have used it several times, it is hard to glue, you need to use a quality Epoxy, not the junk at Lowe's or Home Depot. and de-grease the wood before gluing
