Hey all-
Just found out that my work is sending me to Gulfport MS the last week of August. I have never been to that area of the country. Anything to do during my down time?
-
I would go visit the Bow Shop on deadeaux rd. They have some incredible mounts in that place and some of the guy's are trad hunters.

If you like to gamble there are casinos in the area. Also the fishing is good. I don't know of any bow shops along the Gulf Coast but there should be some. You can google Biloxi, MS and Gulfport, MS and see what you come up with. I'm about 60 miles north in Hattiesburg. Drew
-
I'm in North Mississippi.
-
Take a trip to New Orleans! It's only an hour and 1/2 away at the most.
-
I am in north Ms. as well, I lived in south Luisiana for most of my life , could'nt drag me to New Orleans , the fishing along the coast is good and bowfishing is very good in the marsh. Not sure about Ms. but in the Louisiana waters redfish and flounder are legal with a bow.
-
hey yall I am from Ethel, Ms. call me BigJohn.
-
well howdy BigJohn
-
Hey ya'll in MS. Would someone there be kind enough to help me, if this product is still available.
I want to aquire a POD or two for my use in Bow Hunter ed course. They were available in MS, but nowhere else. Does anybody know of a source where I can call and get one or two, or do you have one or two available that I can buy from you ?
ChuckC
-
I'm way up in Union county, almost a yankee.
Chuck, I assume the pods are still available. There are, or were, several types, from balloons to hypodermics. I used them in another life, and killed a couple of deer using them. I haven't seen one in 30 years or more, but I'm sure they're still out there. The Anectine muscle relaxant is prescription only, and there are not as many "friendly" vets who will dispense it to bowhunters since a crackdown years ago. You might try a sporting goods store.
-
Hey Don, I am way over in Lafayette county.
-
I'm located in the Northwestern part of the state in Cleveland, MS.
-
hogdancer, are there hogs over there? None around my place.
Don
-
yes we have them, pretty thick in some spots. Come on over and we'll chase them during the season.
-
Long as they don't chase back! I'm not as quick as I used to be...
-
Columbus here.
-
I have a few old balloon pods.Is this a legit request or...
-
Thomas, i will take you up on the hogs and we do need to set up some kind of hog hunt for tradgangers in MS or whoever wants to go. I have several places that are full of hogs in the delta and the farmers are begging folks to come shoot them.
-
So I have never been to MS. and will be there from Aug 24 to Aug 30. I am guessing it will be REAL hot.
-
Heat and humidity definately push the heat index up. We've already seen 103 - 106 degree heat index. Sticky heat, you'll love it.
-
The coast isn't quite as hot as the interior, much of the time, due to the influence of the Gulf. It's still pretty tough.
My youngest son is down there now, working a new job setting up computers for businesses.
Hogdancer, I'm sending you a PM.
-
Featherbuster, Don , Yes lets get together for a hog hunt ! They don't call me hogdancer because my wife is fat ! ... well Gene Wensel does !
-
I've been a MS resident all my life, but I'm no help as far as archery shops on the Gulf--never been there. I'm Northeast myself, not far from Tupelo.
Pods are still around, but danged if I know where to get one. Never used them myself.

-
LBR,
Where is your "SPONSOR CLASSIFIED"?
You still make strings?
I'm here in Tupelo..
-
I am about as far from Gulfport as you can get and still be in Mississippi. I live in Olive Branch. The fishing for redfish and trout is good along the coast and out on Cat and Horn Island. I think there is a ferry service to the island for day trips. By the way I just joined this site. Lots of good info and help here. I think a hog hunt would be great. I know where some are on some public land near Oxford.
-
I'm under "Chek-Mate Bows". Never advertised the string making side of the business--never get caught up with those anyhow.
Chad
-
Dang LBR!!!
I had no idea you were over there!
Found your site..

I'm from Union Ms.
Hogdancer, didn't you and I used to shoot a few 3-D's together down in South Mississippi and Lousiana? If I remember correctly, didn't you make me some great compressed cedar shafts back in the early 90's?
-
Yeah Hogdancer? I didn't know you were a foam puncher!
-
No was'nt me, never made a compressed cedar and never have been much of a target shooter but your name does sound familiar.
Take care

Hogdancer, Mark is an old pro around here..he use to mop up the floor with me in early 90's at the local trad.shoots....been known to show up time or two at a PBS banquet..he has been the backbone of MissBowhunters for ever..You need to join MBA Hogdancer!
-
Joebuck,
I remember there was a lot of mopping up going on in the early 90's....but I believe it was a situation that was entirely reversed from your recollection:-)
As far as the MBA, I would encourage anyone (especially PBS members) to be part of the state organization. It's the trenches of the bowhunting battles. The 'powers that be' have more than once said that this state is headed toward a single season format where everyone picks their weapon of choice to participare in. Anyone can join at www.mississippibowhunters.com (http://www.mississippibowhunters.com)
Looking forward to seeing both of you guys at the PBS banquet in Nashville.
-
A Single Season Format.uuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhh....Dang Mark , I'm upgrading to Life this week. Hey if you show up in Nashville and Hogdancer and I both show up too, could we have 100% of PBS Reg Members there in attendance? We should get an award!
-
Glad I was able to set an example for Joebuck and get him to upgarade to life memebership :biglaugh:
I will be in Nashville , bringing my kids this time !
-
Thanks to both of you guys....Nashville here we come!
No kidding on archery issues concerning a single season format. I've been told that directly by legislative leaders and the MDWFP. It's a real issue that is just under the public surface. I heard the same issues were at play in North Carolina.
Why else do you think there has been so much change in the Mississippi primitive weapon season? The conditioning of the hunting public to accept change has started.
-
wow, that is scarry !
-
I would think that the manufacturers' lobby would be working hard to fight it. Sales will go down the tubes for "alternative" deer killing equipment if everything is combined.
Renewing my membership today.
-
My last MBA baquet, Fred bear was the guest speaker!!........single season.......gosh that and baiting is very distrubing to me. Mark , whose side is Bobby Cleveland on for the Clarion Ledger on these two topics?
-
Don,
I wouldn't count on the archery manufacturers to get too politically involved based on my experiance. (If it mattered a great deal, then the CVA's, Knights, etc's of the world would have stopped the 'centerfire' primitive weapons season. Black powder rifle sales are dead in this state.) The archery manufacturers tend to work through the ATA and all the ATA can do at the moment is to promote crossbow legislation. BTW, crossbow legalization also plays well into the concept of the liberalization of equipment regs by the state.
Joebuck,
Bobby is against baiting but has tempered his rhetoric on the subject as of late. As far as a single season format, that's not really public knowledge at this point. It's a legislative issue and it's a slipperly slope proposition based on time and speed. I don't neccesarily see this as a covert plan of the legislature or the MDWFP...but rather an acknowledgement that wildlife biology has changed and the future will reflect it.
In the past there were more people wanting to hunt than the resource could tolerate...so 'special seasons' based on a restricted harvest were created. That need is no longer in play as we have the need for more harvest than we have hunters. Special seasons have become partly the nemesis of wildlife management and they exist only based on a desire of sportsmen to have them.
All that has to be done is to change the desire of sportsmen and condition them to accept change. That is being done nicely in this state by evidence of recent equipment regulation changes.
The effort to preserve the future of bowhunting in this state is about to get much harder.
-
I guess this is one time that the special interest groups should band together to do us all some good. I won't hold my breath...
-
Remember it is MS. The most politically corrupt state in the union. Whoever has the deepest pockets gets thier way. Whoever has the brother-in-law that needs a favor wins. The rest of us are just background noise. Sorry for my cynicism, I love my state and it truly is time for good men to be heard. I'd like to see things go a different direction than they typically do. Legislators that hear and care about their constituants would be refreshing.
-
Jedi, we recently took the title from Louisiana, the former most politically corrupt state. Go Mississippi! We also have the most grossly overweight people in the country.
I love it here too, and it's nice to know we excel at something! About the only thing good I can think of to say about the politics here, is that the entertainment value is high. Like an episode of Hee Haw, without the girls.
-
:biglaugh: Don, we definitely have the best sense of humor as well!
I think the weight issue just goes to prove we have the best food too. So those are two more things that are tops about MS.
