He says make them 12"x12". I am a big guy 6' 225lbs. Has anybody found a size that works well for a man with a big butt?
-
I've seen this guys butt. :biglaugh:
Every year I say to myself, I am going to make one of these things. then I end up saying a few times thru the season. I'm gonna make one for next year. So.....I'm gonna make one for next year.

I made one (13" X10") that I wanted to fit into my pack. I'm 5'11" and 210 lbs, and it does not make my butt look big. :saywhat:
This one works just fine and is comfortable.

They work great. Im 215lbs, made two for myself and three more for some turkey hunting friends. All out of 1/2 cabinet grade plywood ( 9 layer, not the 3 layer) and they work great!! Still going strong!!

I've tried them and they always end up as pieces of junk. I'm gonna mod the design for us bigger guys, I'll post pics when I finish it

Looking foward to it Nighthawk!! You have my intrest.

Just make sure you get good rope that doesn't violently slip down the bark as a big doe comes down the trail you've been ambushing. :knothead:
-
What rope seems to work the best with the least amount of stretch? Does the braided nylon, like a ski rope, work decent?
-
I believe the nylon rope is what Dean recommends since it is very strong with minimal stretch. Polyester would also work well. I used what I had in the garage, which was a manila rope. It stretches slightly more, but holds a knot very well.
-
Ski Rope, unless you can find something that will stretch less. If it stretches at all it wont work.

Seats are 14"x14", guess I got a medium sized butt LOL!
My rope is 5/8", original thought was that the orange would help me find'em when I was leaving them in the woods sometimes , but really hasnt made any different

My dad and I spent a morning cleaning out all the old plywood scraps in both our garages. We made 17 seats and could have made more! We gave some away and saved the rest. I plan on stashing several around my hunting area so I have ready seats as I still hunt along a planned route.
We made the seats approx. 17"x17" to fit big butts with several layers of hunting clothing and still have room to shift about.
We used nylon rope and would unexpectedly experience the "trap door syndrome" when the whole thing would drop to the ground. Pretty scary, especially with a loaded gun or nocked arrow on your lap. We found if you wrap twice around the tree the rope NEVER slips. A foam pad really helps make the seat more comfortable too.
-
All you need to keep from slipping is a bow hook screwed into the back of the tree, or I use my saw to cut a small notch in the bark that the rope will fit into.
-
6', 250 lbs. The 12 x 12 works for me. Keep in mind that your butt doesn't necessarily have to be in between the two ropes where they attatch to the seat - you can actually sit on the rope where it attaches to the seat with out any problems. Making it wider creates more weight to cary around.
-
If you'll put some kind of rubber on the back (tree) side, it really helps "lock" the seat onto the tree. I used an old piece of gas filler hose. The rubber makes it quiet too.

I also used a kind of 'stretchy' poly rope I found at Wal-Mart. Think it was 5/8" Dock Line. Seems like the seat is very secure when I sit on it. BTW... this one is a narrow-butt model. :smileystooges: May have to upgrade...
