just wondering what your guys closest kill shot on a big game animal on the ground and what lbs you were shooting thanks
-
I shot a whitetail buck in 1984 from less than a yard! It's a long crazy story as well!
-
shot a wt. through the side of my double bull the arrow hit the deer before leaving the wall of the blind lol. The x was priceless
-
I shot an 85# coyote while I was sitting on a piece of chunk wood. The arrow went in the base of his neck and out his left hip. After he took off down the mountain,I stood up,walked 8 steps and picked up my arrow.
-
Two whitetail deer from seven yards.
-
An 85# coyote???
Got any pics????
-
100 pound pig at @3 yards.
-
I had a hog walk up on me from behind some thick cover. If I hadn't been at full draw he would have knocked my arrow off the shelf!
-
When I was 17 I was callin in a bull with my dad. I set-up to shoot in a little brush spot that was literally right-on a nice trail. But, the bull we were calling was coming up the hill straight at me, while the trail was cross the hill. Anyway, the bull was comin good and I was ready, focused pretty hard on that bull comin, when I caught a flash of brown out of the corner of my eye. A spike bull (though I had no idea the size at the time) was coming down that trail right to me, twenty yards out. I drew (being literally in the brush I got away with it), and he passed by right on top of me. When his front shoulder went by, I let it go. I kid you not, I actually felt the arrow hit and penetrate the bull, as it was pushed in by my bowstring, pushing my arm backward a tad. That was close.
Another time my dad and I called up a bull that came down the hill on the same trail we were on as we were moving up on a different bull. That bull came down the trail fast, and we barely had time to get off the trail. I chose one side, my dad the other. He some how had the wherewithal to get an arrow on the string and shoot. the hit whirled the bull up on his hind legs, and when his hooves came down they barely missed me. He staggered off twenty or so yards and fell over. I alway tell my dad It was sure nice that he didn't get a pass through, who knows if he woulda got me or not.
shoot straight
-
Bear from 4 yards, cow elk 4 yards, and a hog that I had to lean back to draw and when I shot he was less than 2 feet from my boots. I've shot several other hogs from under three yards.
-
Whitetail doe from natural ground blind. About 5' with a 70# Brackenbury.
-
elk- was at 5 feet and let him get out around 5-7 yards before I shot, bear 7 yards, hogs as close as Matt's, turkey 4 feet.
-
Wow, A world record coyote!!!! ;)
3pt whitetail at 3steps on the ground, went twenty yards and crashed! Probably my quickest shot too....
-
Wow!
Some incredible stories.
My luckiest to date was an 8' shot spike elk, (the cow behind him on the trail was about 3') with a 66'' 57# Liberty English Elite.
-
I killed a mountain goat at probably ten feet many years ago.
-
Shot a small whitetall buck at 18". I had to lean backwards to draw my bow! Hap
-
Shot a cow elk at 6 ft and a bull at 7 steps. Missed a hog at 4yds though.. . .thought it was 5.

Whitetail at 6 yards..........after she smelled the toe of my boot.

doing a push on a standing cornfield shot a doe two rows over ..63# brack
-
cool thread. With a bow, A doe at 5 yards I was sitting down by a huge oak that blew down and she just popped around the corner walking with her head facing the other way.
with a shotgun my dad and I were callin up a gobbler with my dad behind me twenty yards. I had the gun up on my knee and walked right towards me I let him walk to 3 yards, almost blew his head completly off
-
South Texas javelina at 3 yards. I was on the side of a sendera and a 49# java.came walking up toward me so I got down on my knees(had knee pads on) behind some cactus and peeked thru at him. When he got close I drew to full draw and then leaned over to shoot around it. The 4 blade MagnusII went thru him and stuck in the sand before it exited him. He ran about 40 yards! Up close is more exciting! Ken
-
WT and bear, both less than 5 paces. The bear wasn't quite from the ground, but dam near! LOL
-
I shot my first trad deer @ 5yrds Ill never forget that moment! and once missed a tom at 5 feet (I had to try the head shot!) MIKE
-
Black bear at 15 feet and a couple of whitetails at about 7 yds. I shot a caribou at 8-10 yds, but when he walked by I could have poked him with my bow tip. All longbows and wood arrows. Even I can hit them when they're that close.
-
My buddy Bamboo set me up in a natural blind one morning, on a large knob...top of a mtn. This 4 pt walked on the knob, made a scrape and I arrowed him at 5 yds...he went about 15 then fell over...
-
Mountain goat at 7 feet.
-
thank for you time guys
-
I still-hunted up to a palmetto patch and almost stepped on a sleeping hog. It sensed(heard?)me, opened his eyes and I double lunged him at about 6 feet(even I can make that one!).
He nearly ran me over coming out of there.
I hit him again quartering away for the finisher at about 12 yards.(If they're still standing I'm still shooting.)
-
about 4 yards out of a blind on a whitetail.
-
Whitetail 4 yards
David
-
Shot a spring gobbler at about 3yds. Arrow passed through and stuck in My Pretty Boy strutting decoy. When the arrow struck the decoy the Gobbler spun around and had to side step the blind as he ran off. He made it about 20 yds and piled up. Pretty cool. Trap
-
Whitetail buck 1 yard with a 45# Bear Grizzly; went 35 yards after a double lung shot!
-
shot a little 70# hog at 5 yards...he was bedded in some cane...shot him behind the jaw bone and about 12inches of the arrow stuck out the opp. side about 2 or 3 inches below his eye( cheek bone). didnt even get up. shot was made with a 52# hoyt gamemaster & 515gr. arrow tipped with steel force 4 blades:)
-
7 yard shot cotton mouth in the head, arrow pinned him to the ground
-
I need a pic of the 85lbs yote! I trapped tons of them, the biggest I ever got was a 60lbser in WI. Went to the taxidermist and a guy there said I'll give you 200 bucks for him I said he's yours. 2 days later got a 55 lbser 2 biggest dogs I've ever seen on a scale!

Holy crap!!!!! I think elkbreath wins!!!
That is one incredible story, you just don't get any closer than that. What a feeling!!!!!
My closest was 10 yds on a 5pt bull.
-
Whitetail at 3 yards in a Gillie suit - grunted and though he was going to run over me but he swerved when I drew, 5pt bull elk 7 or 8 yards - they look big from that close and a javie at about 30 (inches), the arrow cleared the bow. Close is good.
-
a black bear that had my left foot in its mouth.
-
Ouch! Hap
-
geez brian! Did you get to full draw? No snap shootin there I'm sure! :-)
-
Whitetail at 4 yds,turkey at 7 yds.
-
Whitetail fawn and doe. 2 yards and 4 yards, respectively. Standing in thick brush and both deer were walking down the edge of a standing corn field. Shot them about 10 seconds apart.
-
A small buck walked by me at 9 feet. I was on the ground shooting a 67# Shadow Eclipse longbow and chundoo shaft with a 145 grain Hunter's Head.

OK - Brian wins! LOL
This reminds me of a game of "hold my beer and watch this!"
-
4 yards after I watched him rub a cut off tree limb directly under my stand.
-
i shot a doe last year with my 55#bear bow from about 8 yards.
-
Before portable treestands,I shot a whitetail, straight down beneath me from a maple tree.My "platform" was a limb, sloping at about a 30 degree angle.I'd guess about 12 feet.I shot one antelope at 30 feet.I once let app.30 doe and fawn antelope pass by me at 20 feet, while I hunkered in tall weeds. The buck was last and I had to let him get by to draw and shot him at 40'.I believe antelope have trouble focusing at very close ranges 30' and under, especially if you are in some cover.
-
About 30yds on the only deer I have ever killed on the ground.About 6 yards on hogs.
-
I forgot one that I didn't miss. I had spent the better part of two hours stalking two giant boar hogs that were feeding in a small meadow surronded by Texas brush. (nasty stuff with lots of stickers) Anyway I finally got in position behind a tree as the boars fed into the shot lane. I picked a pig and drew for the shot. The arrow sailed beautifully over his back at 15 yds. Man was I pissed that I missed and was having some serious self-talk as I walked down a trail.
Suddenly on my right the brush was moving and coming right at me. I took one step back and started to draw. A nice boar stepped out at 6 ft and took two steps towards me. He finally saw me in the trail and started to spin away. I slipped the arrow in right behind the shoulder and took it in the heart. The shot was no more then 4 ft.
Good thing I didn't think about how far he was probably would have shot under him. LOL

Whitetail,6 pt. 6yds. Gail Martin takedown 55#@28". Homemade cedar, Magnus 2bld.125g(nut)
-
I climbed about 5 feet up a tree to get a better look at a field. Minutes later a P&Y whitetail walked directly under my feet and stopped. Good thing his head was down or he would have been looking at my boots. Maybe 5 or 6 feet of arrow flight to impact. Took 22 hours to find the deer. Forgot to practice at that distance!
-
Don't know about game, but I was with a friend who took a shot at a running deer during a drive (I know... this was a LONG time ago) and his arrow centered a tree about 25" in front of his bow. Obviously his arrow didn't even clear his bow and made a heck of a racket when it whacked the bow.
I shat a small deer that was maybe 5 feet from the tree I was in. My platform was 7' high.

Yow! I bet it took a while to recover from that!
:biglaugh:
-
White tail, 5 yards 55# Zipper curve. And many, many mosquitos at literally swatting distance. :bigsmyl:
-
Running doe whitetail, 4 yards, 48# Widow. Mostly self-defense since she had been coming straight at me. Should have let her pass on by...a good buck was on her tail and came through maybe 30 seconds later. Dang it.
-
Kevin - don't you know that we kill yearlings not fawns. . lol. Fawns are what your buddy shoots when he shoots a yearling. Sounds like you had an exciting morning.
-
;) HA! I forgot that basic rule of thumb Shoe Man. If it weren't for "yearlings", I'd go hungry sometimes. It was my first bowkills with a recurve. Good times for sure! Now if I could just do it again...
-
I killed three elk at 3-5 yards. While elk hunting I shot a mountain lion between the eyes, as he was coming at me; a 3 yard shot. I took one step and nudged its head with my foot.
-
Very cool thread! Seven yards on the ground at the 12 pt. whitetail buck in my avatar. 47# Fox longbow. First, and only, big game kill to date.
-
Don't laugh at Woodchuckers coyote, I have shot two huge males that were close to that and a female that was 54#s on a certified scale. I have shot several deer at less that 10 ft. and rabbits at less than a foot from me also have missed them at that close as wel. Shawn
-
I shot my best buck yet at about 3 yards standing next to a rather huge cotton wood tree. He chased a doe right by me. When she ran by I could literally feel the breeze as she zipped by. He came in and I drew that stopped him while he looked at me and I let him have it. 80 yards later I found him dead.
This years turkey was about 4 feet. But that was with a gun. A little sneaky sneaky and holding high left his head in tact.
-
Shot my first with a bow on the ground at less than the length of my arrow.I don't think my broadhead at full draw was more than 24inches from the deer. I was a rookie at the time and sitting right next to a deer trail a young doe came running down the trail and stopped right in front of me i was already at full draw talk about a slam dunk. TD.
-
your NY yotes have to have some wolf in them. They kill some big dogs up there, though that may be the biggest I've heard of.
I've killed several hundred here in Wyoming over the years, biggest I've seen maybe went 45lbs.
Now, those yotes I've had close. like, a few have run me over literally before getting the buckshot. Most close ones take the 12 gauge at ten or so feet before I let em run me over, for obvious reasons. But, I never have taken one with a bow
Thanks for the stories every one! one more dy and a little nap before the opener!!!
:-)
-
A four point White tail at 3 yards. 45# Bear bow.
I was cow calling for elk, and this WT walked up the trail. The "bird in hand" syndrome, you know.
-
I shot a five pointer last year with my 44# Widow.
He walked by me at maybe 6ft. I didn't even make it to full draw before i let go. I double lunged him with a zwicky eskamo tipped 3555GT.
I think thats the closest one from the ground that i can remember.
-
Only if he is a lefty! :biglaugh:
-
The first deer I killed at the age of 13 was a doe at under 5 feet, I was on one side of a downed tree's trunk. She was on the other side.
I've killed to feral/wild boar in self defense. One in full charge at under 3 yards and one as it swung around a tree at me and started to rake my legs with it's tusks. Both died before they could do me any harm. Both were shot with my Marriah Thermal takedown recurve 73#@29" and 2216 Easton Classic shafts tipped with Wensel Woodsman Broadheads.
-
I know your asking about bow kills, but my shortest was with a 44mag on a woodchuck, 6 inches....Messy, very messy! He was crosseyed looking at the end of the revolver.
-
Wild Pig. Stalked up on 7 of em feeding under a soursap tree here on Guam. 3 ft, yep 3 ft. quartering away went in near side ribs and out the armpit on off side. got liver, lungs and heart. She went about 20 yards and slid down a hill another 100 yards stone dead.
