Title: HH Grip Locator or Dished
Post by: Jack Wright on September 02, 2008, 10:02:00 PM
I am interested in getting a used Howard Hill to try out. I have no one around me to try any and wanted some input on the different grips. Seems like most are dished or straight. Any of you use the locator. I am shooting a Dwyer Dauntless right now and the grip is small and locator type. What can I expect from the different type grips. Thanks

i have never got to shoot one either but all i have seen with the locator grip, the dished out part is real shallow.  i would like to them all but i figure i will eventually buy one of each sometime or another

On a Hill, the locator indentation is much less pronounced than most other bows, certainly much less than the locator grip on a Dwyer.  Regardless of the style, all Hills grips are low wrist.  Switching from one Hill grip to another is barely noticeable.  But you will notice a difference switching from most other bows to a Hill.  Hill grips are one of my favorites.

This is just one of the ways that the old and great Hill design is different from many modern designs. But more of them have been made and sold than any other and many of us prefer them to all others. You may as well try whichever grip comes along; I don't know how to predict which one will suit you.

You just have to give it a whirl and see how you like the Hill design. A man has got to know. - lbg

There are a lot of other variations in the Hill grip besides those three to also consider. Depth of grip can and does vary based upon the preference of the person who originally owned it. Also you can get a narrow or wide waist, also based on preference so your going to find numerous combinations of all these, plus the takedowns are different still. After shooting many I have settled on a wide waist, 2" deep straight as being my prefered style, with the slight dish coming in second. If your interested in trying a narrow waist, slightly dished Wesley send me a pm as I have a very nice one that I'll make you a deal on.

I've got a big hand and that straight grip fills it just right.  Your mileage may vary.

I have tried all three grips, I keep coming back to the slightly dished grip.  More comfortable for me.

I like the locator and dished grips the best. SpankyNeal had it right, there are a lot of variations on diameter and width. I just received a Hill with a small locator grip and it fits like a glove. Here it is............

I have one with a locator grip...I like it but the only other I've shot is my takedown, which has a oval shaped (cross section) straight grip.
I like that one too.  Dick Wightman has probably shot more Hill bows than most and all of the grip styles.  He has smallish hands like mine and has come to prefer the straight grip.  If you were buying a new bow, the best thing to do is send Craig a tracing of your hand...he sizes the grip accordingly. Mines on the small side.  FWIW..

I just bought a HH with the locator grip. I have a good size hand. This grip fits like a glove and aids in keeping the heel of your hand down when shooting the bow. I've heard others complain about hand shock with Hill style bows. I have not noticed any shock what-so-ever with this bow. It is 66" long, 56@28" and will be with me on opening day. Good luck and good hunting.

Since some locators have been posted I thought I would throw this one in for you Jack so you can compare. You can see the difference in depth between the two dished grips, and between the two straights. The straight grips both have a wide waist, the first dished from the left is narrow, and the other dished on the right is kind of a medium width and has less of a dish. If you can't shoot the different grips, I would say go with the locator since that is what you've been shooting on your Dwyer, and send Craig a trace of your hand like Tom said.

Ken,
What are the particulars of the first one on the left? I just got Dick's Black Wolf in a trade, looks like that one has the same lam setup.

Thanks,

Kevin

Yeah Kevin that is a Tembo with the laminated bamboo core and carbon back. She's a real shooter for sure. I saw the Black Wolf when you posted it the other day - looks really nice and you definately can shoot her for sure!

Regards,

Ken

I love that lamboo and carbon combo. If I book enough hunters this year, I'm going to treat myself to a twin to the Black Wolf, just 66" and 55@27.
