I'm going to find myself in the Ballston Spa area near Saratoga Springs in New York by the end of this year and I was wondering if someone could tell me about the hunting up there. Are there lots of public lands or is it mostly private? Besides white tail what else is up in that general area? Are there any Trad clubs around that area? Any help would be appricated.

There is a trad archer in Ballston Spa who could show you a few good haunts for stumping and hunting. He's a tall, strapping young gent who can hit a nat at 500 paces...
All kidding aside, the hunting here is mostly private. There is some really good public land 45 minutes from here that I've become quite fond of. As far as trad clubs, I know of one that I could send a you a link to if you want it.
Not to mention, if you wanna get together and just shoot a few arrows on my backyard range, you're free to anytime...
-
Thanks Bowspirit, I'd owe you a big for that. I can't seem to find any trad folks here were I'm at now so I look forward to shooting with someone sharing the same interests as me. Also, hows the housing market up there? I would prefer the chance at house with some land.

You'll be able to go to the Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt next year also. There are a lot of Trad guys in the area. I'm about 1 1/2 hours from there over in Vermont.
-
Don't forget the Bunny Hunt in February!! :D
Nice area with public land enough to hunt, especially if you're willing to drive 30 minutes or so. Like Chris said, lots of private land... just start knocking on doors.
-
Great minds think alike, huh Dave? :)
-
And us too it seems. :biglaugh:

Mohawk Hudson Traditional Archers is an incredible trad club with monthly get togethers and shoots for $20.00 a year.Youll meet alot of good guys at a meet. Also a trad league in Albany, year round that anyone is welcome to shoot with every Thursady night.Just hope the smoke from a good cigar and a lot of laughter wont offend you cause we do that as much as we shoot.Lots and lots of state land a short drive north of Saratoga Co.As for the housing market, at this time you should be able to get a steal of deal on land and a house.Good luck and give me a shout if I can help you in anyway.

Hi Dozer, I live less then a half hour from Ballston Spa. Lots of area to hunt but you definately have to put your time in to get a deer. It's a strong buyer's market now on homes and land. Give me a shout if you have any questions.

The trad league herkimerhunter is speaking of is a techno shoot at Lemmes Archery. It's prolly one of the best trad resources in the area and only a half hour drive from my house, if that. The shop owner, Mario, is one of the nicest fella's around, and a trad shooter to boot. Great guy, and a great business...

Thanks guys you've been very helpful. The Navy is transfering my wife to the small nuclear power plant they run in Ballston Spa and we'll be there for almost 4 years. Since this is her last tour if we like it, and I find a good job as a heavy diesel tech, we plan on staying there for good.
I've heard there are moose there, is this true?
-
Not IN ballston spa, per say. But they are up in the Adirondack regions north of here. Not a huntable population, but they're there...
-
dozer I live in that area, lots of deer turkey small game and 3-D shoots.Mohawk Hudson trad club is a great club. There is state land all over the place you just have to find it,all close by.The private land knock on doors and ask, show up with your trad gear and show its not a gun.A good % of people will say yes.

Google "CSX Rail Road"
I don't know if they are hiring but there is a HUGE frieght yard in Selkirk. Lots of Diesel Locomotives to work on.
Look forward to meetin' you!!!!! :wavey:
-
Thanks woodchucker. I've always wanted to work for the railroad but I've heard someone has to die in order for a position to open up. I'll try anyway.
-
If you get the chance, come on down and hunt in Ulster and Orange counties. The artist formerly known as woodchucker (hehehe!) lives down this way (so I am told), and I can put you in a few public land places that I guarantee (pretty much!) you will consistently see a lot of deer in. I lived there for 11 years and still go back most every weekend during the season.
Little better than an hour from you I think.
Nathan

Well, That's "almost" true.....
People retire all the time and jobs do open up.I work for Metro North down in Poughkeepsie,But they're out of NYC. Kinda the oppossit end of where your going(and about a 4 hour commute from Albany LOL.
You could also try AmTrak,They have a station in Albany. They don't have alot of Mechanics there but it's worth a try.

CSX is in my backyard and I put on the Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt, they do hire quite often believe it or not. Lots of good hunting near where you are going. I know of Thousands of acres of state land within an hour and over 3 million acres in the Adirondacks as well. Shawn
