Well I hurried home from work tonight and got in the shower and decided to go give some white oaks a try that I have a stand in, tonight was the first night I have gotten to sit this particular stand because it takes a south or west wind and up until now I have not had that, so off to the woods I went. Rest assured tonight was to be a different night than the other day when I let numerous does and a smaller buck walk over my crabapple tree ( which by the way is now void of apples, arrrrrgh!) anyway I had my mind made up to shoot a nice fat doe for the freezer and wouldn't you know it a small fork horn showed within minutes of me settling in. The problem was I was not going to shoot this forky so I had to remain completely still for the better part of two hours with him constantly working from the bottom of my tree out to about twenty yards and then back again. Then a few nice dry does showed up but every time one of them would approach one of my shooting lanes the forky would chase them off, boy how I wanted to put him the freezer after this happened a dozen or so times! Just before dark I heard what sounded like a good buck rubbing his antlers on a nearby tree and he was really putting on a ear show to say the least fearing that he would wait until dark to show himself I stayed ready with arrow on the string the old Bear Razorhead (greenie!) and bleeder wanted badly to make contact. Then he showed up quietly working his way to me, he was quartering to me for some time then he turned and offered me a quartering away angle at 8 yards. I reached my anchor and loosed the pine shaft when the arrow found home he bolted and piled up THIRTY FIVE yards away in just a matter of seconds! I was elated as soon as he went down I climbed down and went to him for a moment of reflection with the taking of this beautiful mature Georgia whitetail. Then came the picture taking and sense of pride and acclomplishment overwhelmed me all I could think about was the times my brother and I had shared carried stickbows thru the sage of my home in Eastern Montana, where he still lives, he was the first one I called, and I could almost feel the slap on my shoulder from him even though he was two thousand miles away! It is funny even after seventy some deer taken with a longbow they all seem just as exciting as the first old muley doe taken so many years again coming in to a fawn distress call! Did I mention I love traditional archery, THE HARD WAY I think not it is the only way for me! I hope you enjoy the pics I do not usually post to much here but I sure enjoy lurking I think you fellers are good bunch to POW WOW with take care!

Lord almighty, that's a BRUTE. Did you have to see a chiropractor after dragging that beast out of the woods? GREAT JOB!
-
Thats a great buck, Anaconda. Congratulations!
Most people don't realize GA's deer herd are descendents of MN, VA, and TX whitetails along with some of the mountain and barrier island native subspecies.
Our rut is reflective of that, peaking at different times from October through November and perhaps even later, depending on where you are.
I believe there are over 50 B&C entries from our state. Last year in metro Atlanta there were three deer over 170 taken with archery equipment in metro Atlanta alone.

CONGRATULATIONS !!!! Being from the South, I know what an accomplishment taking a buck of this size is...AND I think Qunitin was sharing the woods with the Gun Hunters as Georgia Firearms opened Saturday......BEAUTIFUL BUCK.... :clapper: Don and Skyler

Thanks DW I actually kind of have it made my best friend who does not hunt manages 5000 acres on the Flint River near a small town and he lets ME hunt so the competiton is rare although there are a two others hunting this year on a paid hunt but that is like a needle in a haystack and they are required to keep their distance from me as well, with their cannons. So all in all it is a taylor made traditional archery property, but you still have to close the deal, the only possible downside and competition is from the cattle since it is a working cattle ranch, there is nothing more frustrating than have cows move in just before primetime and set up camp grazing under your tree. (AAAAAARGH!) that is why there are no food plots or anything can't possibly fence them all out , but I think I like it better that way, makes a fella hunt harder and smarter.

That there is a dandy!!!! Bet your glad you held out now!

Great deer. I am still waiting for the first deer to show up near one of my stand sites here in Maine. What draw weight was your bow? I am using Sttelite Broadheads with bleeders, which are essentially bear broadheads. I have been wondering what type of penetration i would get with a 52# recurve.
-
What a bruiser! congrats on taking that guy down.
-
Oh yea now thats a nice buck ! BTW Love the kill pics , alot of folks "dress" the kill pics up to make the photo look better but I like to see the kills the way they are .

maineiac, I was shooting a Thunderstick 3 longbow at 52 lbs. I shot him with a pine shaft and the total arrow wieght was 600 grains. The arrow hit him high at entrance and drained him taking out lungs and heart and broke the off shoulder it never exited. The ol' boy sprinted 35 yards and was dead in a matter of seconds, literally. I have always shot HEAVY bows and arrow combinations but after a bout with a bad left shoulder I had to switch to a lighter bow and do not regret it at all having taken two deer with this setup this year with completely satisfying results, and besides that it is a joy to shoot, I had to really concentrate getting off the string cleanly when first switched but that did not take long to learn. I feel confident your setup will work with the same results, good luck fellas and thanks for the kind words, I might just have to post some more here a good bunch of people to share experiences with!

Awesome Buck, congrats!

Way to go Brother ! Great job !
-
Great deer bro!!! Don't let them cows bother you none. I grew up around dairy farms and the cows are a blessing. They stink so bad the deer can't smell you for them!!!
-
They really do not bother me I was born and raised on a cattle ranch in eastern Montana for nearly thirty years so I understand cows but if they would just leave a guy a little room for maybe a deer or two to get within bowrange! :banghead:
-
Congrats , nice deer :0)

Thats a great buck no matter were you live, Great story telling Quintin and nice shooting he's a dandy. Congrats :clapper:

thanks fellas with another buck tag and a slew of doe tags I have gotten Billy Berger to knap me some heads for my osage selfbow, I think I will try my luck with that for the remainder of the season, I would love to kill a mature deer with the bow me own two hands made! Should have those heads in a few days so I had better finish up the honey do's! I feel like next week is going to be the time to be in the woods! :jumper:
