Title: Ghillie decisions????
Post by: bowdog1 on October 29, 2008, 09:51:00 PM
In market for best ghillie suit. No interest in making my own! Pants/jacket vs. Poncho style and hairy vs. leafy???? Will be stand hunting from ground in timber or cut-over for whitetails. Advice and reccomendations welcome.

I got a ranchosafari jacket and it has worked great for me.  I cut off the hood and sewed it onto a boonie hat.  didn't think I needed pants and so far that seems to be true

I have the jacket and pants. Not a fan of the  poncho or leafy suit, to each there own. the more ratty the better, you will be supprised at how well they work....Practice with the suit on(sitting and laying on the ground) trim as needed.

I have the shaggie longcoat from rancho safari and love it. Here is a picture of how I trimmed mine.

I made mine in the same style of the shaggie longcoat and it works wonders.  Had 5 deer 6 feet from me yesterday and they never saw me.  Day before, a 'yote got so close to me I couldn't take the shot.

I got mine at Cheaperthandirt.com.  This is the first year I've tried it, and I'm sold.  I've had does all around me almost everytime I go out. I've yet to have one figure me out.  Tonight I had a really nice buck about 30 yards away, and he never noticed me, even when I stood up in anticipation of a shot (I'm hunting on the ground).  He never got closer than 30 yards, though, so I never shot.

My ghillie is a full suit, but I also don't usually wear the pants.  I drape them around my seat while seated, and it helps camoflage that a bit.  The one thing I don't like is the hat, which is completely enclosed and I have to look through mesh.  I'm thinking of trashing that and just making a similar hat, out of a boonie, and leaving the face open.  Visibility would be much better, and I'm sure it wouldn't be as hot.

Anyway, try cheaperthandirt.com.

Is it Terry that has the leafy hat? The most likely part of you that will move is your head; so using ghillie style camo on the head is important.

If any of you ghillie suit hunters are real men; you will carry extra TP for those of us that don't see you until .... well you get it.

Ive got a guide series leafy suit and I like it alot. It's cooler than jeans and a T-shirt for warm weather hunting, and you can wear whatever warm stuf you want underneath it for cold weather. Plus it costs about as much as any other set of non-leafy camo pants and jacket.  :D

I just purchased one on Amazon.com complete suit, with head cover $98.00 with shipping.

I'd ordered one from cheaper than dirt, they kept telling me back ordered back ordered, so I cancel that when I found the one New on Amazon, the one I ordered the woodland, he is supposed to be here November 4.
