I am wanting to get into tradtional archery. My father in law gave me an old Browing wasp 56ata 45# to play around with. I was thinking that I would like to have somethiung a little longer, I am 6' 1". However I dont want to drop an arm in a leg on a bow right away incase I decide to go back to the compound. So some bow brands would be apperciated. Thanks for your time, GOD BLESS!!!!!!!

Ya, that's a pretty short bow to start with, but for free you gotta like that. Check on the classifieds on this site. A lot of nice bows to choose from. A 62" or more bow length at 45 lbs would be a great starter.

Wish the best of luck and stay with it. trad archery takes some time to get comfortable with but, it's worth every second of practice.

This would be a fantastic bow to learn on.

Chad, there are plenty of very nice bows you can purchase on a budget.
One of my favorites is Chek-mate. The Falcon is a basic, great performing recurve that won't break the bank. AND you get nice woods and clear glass limbs to enjoy. These are a 60" bow and plenty long for us longer draw guys.
Price brand new is less than $300.
The classifieds here are also a great resource but you gotta keep your eyes peeled cuz the good deals go FAST ! ;)
Good luck and have fun.

Whoa, Stew, that second one is a 60# bow. Don't you think that's a bit heavy for learning?
-
It is? I thought it read 40# range??? Oops, that's what the seller is looking for. My mistake.
Well, if you can find a Northern Mist in the mid 40's, you would find a great bow to learn on.

Thanks for all the input

Didn't I see like a '74 Super Kodiak 45# in the classifieds?
Killdeer :campfire:

I have a 62" 45# Ben Pearson Sovereign, white glass, zebra and rosewood riser that I've been thinking about selling.
It's in excellent condition, easily a 9 out of 10.
$145.00 shipped.

There's a super sweet 65 Tigercat in the classifieds for $165 and I think in the 40's pound range.

Any of the older Bears would be hard to beat for a starter bow. I like the Black Bear because it's 60" so you get no finger pinch or stack. Mine is pretty ugly. It has that nasty turquoise limb lams. I did a rattle can camo job on it. It still shoot good and isn't so hard to look at. I use if for bowfishing.
My daughter has a Black Bear with tan glass and a walnut riser. It's pretty and a sweet shooter. The best thing is they are usually pretty inexpensive. I think I gave $125 for Laura's. Mine was under a hundred. I can't recall just how much, maybe $75 or so. I got both on the auction site.
There are lots of good '60's and '70's bows around that would make great starter bows.

what he said.

if you can find a 35# Howatt hunter, that would be pretty good. You will draw closer to 40#. DO NOT over bow. It is not the same as compounds. Remember that you will draw more than 28" so take that into consideration.

The new Hunters only start at 40#. I bought an 35# X200 instead. Well nice bow!
