Title: Any one shoot in your house
Post by: Cody Roiter on December 23, 2008, 09:39:00 PM
Hello Guys, Here in MI we have been getting a lot of snow and it's been very cold. I try and shoot my bow  everyday for about an hour and haft. But with it being so cold I can only shoot for about 15mins before going in to warm up. So do any of you guys shoot in your house and what kinds of targets do you have if you have pics of your range I would like to see them.
Thanks guys and I wish you and your family's a merry Christmas.

Take Care,
Cody

Been shooting in my basement since we built the house more than 30 years ago.  I have about a 12 yard shot.  I use a large target faced square nylon bag stuffed with plastic.  Concrete wall behind it.  There are a few chips in the wall, reminders of the suddenness with which target panic can strike.  Would be a good idea to hang a carpet behind the bag target to stop errant arrows, but I've never gotten around to doing that.

Just about every day in the house. I "Howard Hill" and shoot alot for form.  I shoot into a 18x18 "THE BLOCK" target.  They last about three years when subjected to the inside the house treatment,,, thousands and thousands of broadhead tipped shots...

Like the others I have been shooting in the basement for a few years. Distance is only about 4 yards, but is good to keep muscles in shape,  form and practice good back tension, etc. I use a feed bag filled with Walmart plastic bags for target.

Merry Xmas.

God bless,

Jose

In the cellar for me too.About an 11 yard shot and from a sitting position.I filled a burlap bag full of old tarps with a 1/3 sheet of plywood behind it
leaning up against the cellar door.
It can blow as hard as it wants outside....

                    Good Shooting,

I made my new shop 64 ft long, 20 yard shot. Have shot indoors even in motels. Target panic will happen eventually no matter how much you try not to. So, be prepared to patch.

Complaining about the holes in the back wall of my new shop to a friend recently and he told me that he uses a queen mattress for the fail safe backstop behind his target. You can find mattresses for free if you watch for them. Gonna get one soon myself.

I just moved but up until a few weeks ago yes. I would sit on the back of the couch and shoot out thru the dining room into the kitchen(13 yards) I did this for years, I broke one blender and put a hole in two garbage cans in 12 years of doing this. I always let the dogs out and locked and chained the back door when I shot. Shawn

when i was in college i had a home made bag target and used to shoot in my room in rez just to keep muscles working and work on form but it did make quite a bit of noise, often wonder what they used to think lol

and yes i did put a hole in the wall had to invest a bit of DIY repair time to get my deposit back    :knothead:

I haven't tried it with my longbow or recurve.  But, I used to shoot the wheelie bow from the kitchen, through the laundry room, across the backyard and through the garage. It's a bit over 20 yards.

I don't quite trust my skills with the traditional gear yet.  Now I stand in the backyard and shoot into the garage.  So far, I only have two holes in the wall.   :banghead:

Before we moved I had a garage and shot regularly (and a few times right through the target into the garage door!).  It was about a 12 yard shot.  Now I have a small shop and shoot about 8 feet into a bag target, just to work my muscles and practice form.  No holes in the wall yet (it is only 8 feet).

I have an 11 yard shot in the garage. I shoot into a bag target. I have some holes in the drywall from when I was only using a cube target. A 4'x4' piece of plywood as a backstop would be a good idea.

I've been shooting in  my down stairs,15 yds just a block target propped up on the wood pile by my stove. Couldn't draw my 64 inch wes wallace without hitting the cieling, but I just got a  56 inch BW psr from a fellow trad gang member and I've been having a lot of fun with that sweet little  bow.

Here in Alaska its been crappy outside for about 4 months now.

With a handle like blind one I have a feeling it's just a matter of time....  :biglaugh:

I used to shoot in the house but could only get about 6 yards.  Still better than not shooting.  Now I have a heated shop and by opening a door to the unheated half have a 15 yard shot - much better.

I am the one that told Shaun about the mattress.  We replaced one and as I was hauling it out of the house I realized the shop was closer than the curb.  Propped it up behind the target and it works great!  (Not that I ever hit it or anything    )

Only when no one else is home and the dead bolt is thrown on the front door.

I have a small barn right next to the house. I have a block target surrounded with Hay bales. I have a 15 yard shot. If its windy I just close the doors. Can't do much about when its cold but dress for it. Its never too cold to shoot in there though.

Yup me too.  I can get 13 yards from corner to corner.  I have a block wall where my chiminy comes down to the basement and a support jack that I have to shoot in between about 1/2 way to the target.  My target is backed up by a block wall.  It is tight but like Kenny said it makes me concentrate of my spot more!!

I could shoot 20 yards down my hall way when nobody was home just don't want to risk it.  Chaining the doors is a good idea.  When I was big into 3d with my compound I was checking the paper toon and shot through a week spot on my bag and barried an arrow in my garage wall not good.

A converted corner of my Archery Room. Dark, zero temps or rain are no excuse for not working on my form. I lay the "block" on its side so I can stand, kneel, squat ect.... It's all about hunting situational practice.

I can move the block down a hallway and get a 15 step indoor shoot when needed.

I can shoot 9 yards in my garage (homemade stacked corrugated cardboard "block",) but here in Maine, even that is too cold now. I have a couple of light 'bundle' bows made of fiberglass that only draw 15 lbs, plus a Boy Scout 25 lb recurve that I shoot in the playroom. Can get about 7 yards there. Good for keeping the eye in and the form trimmed up.

Here is my field point target. I bought it about 14 years ago. There is no telling how many arrows it has stopped. The front material is ready to finally be changed. It would be easy to make and I highly recommend it. The dimension on this one are 4'x4'. You could definitely make it larger or smaller. I have put casters on the bottom of it to make it easy to roll around.

I shoot in through my garage door to the opposite side of the basement which at the farthest point is 18 yards.

There is no stuffing in between the two front layers (the layers around the 2x4's) but the 6x6 back layers there is pillow stuffing stuffed in between them very tight. It still shows no sign of needing replacement and arrow penetrate about the same as the day I bought it. Not sure what the material covering is but I'm sure you could find anything similar to use.

A real plus to this target is the different layers that the arrow passes through allows for them to remain perfectly straight just like they go in which keeps you from breaking arrows as you shoot at the same spot.

Hope this is a benefit to someone.

My wife retired from her green house business. I got rid of all of the houses but one. It's a 50' house with lights and heat........spend a lot of time there. Have lost an arrow or two thru the back plastic wall, but it's a small price to pay to get out of the rain and now heavy snow that we are getting.

Cody, it's funny you say that. The other day I was shooting my broadheads at a small broadhead target in the same spot as this one is sitting and happened to get a flyer and ran it through the garage wall. It wasn't a pass through so no harm, but it made for a great broadhead toughness test.

I do find the truck being that close makes me bear down when shooting.

Cody, it's warming up get outside and shoot!

Those cold days I shoot in my basement, about 15 yards at a block target.

I'm finishing my basement so when framed it I laid out my "archery" room at the longest point and in the back wall I left a 6x6 opening to shoot through the wall!

I'll have to take a few pics..

I did learn not to bareshaft with broadheads, a concrete wall will mess up a 2 blade Zwickey pretty good!

I'd love to shoot in the "house," but it's only 596 square feet total and less than 10 yards longest interior range. Not even a blue grouse will let me get that close. But then, it's a way to keep the muscles tuned. But I'm old and dumb and just shovel the snow off the outdoor targets and do it that way. But you gotta shoot good in winter in the Rockies ... or wait till spring to find your snow-buried arrows. Seriously, I sure wish I did have an indoor range. dave

I can get 15 yds. by opening up the door to the garage and shooting down the hall from the kitchen sink. I use my commercial layered foam target, backed up by a sheet of 1/2" particle board.

Note: The particle board will not completely stop a field tipped arrow out of my 51# recurve, but it will keep the arrow from going through the garage door and into the radiator of my wife's truck!

I have around a 7 yard shot in my office.  We do a lot of chrono testing here, and I do a lot of practicing.  I use two of the Wally World 4x4 targets; the one on the bottom is worn out and I used it to get the second one up to a good height.  The one on top is unusually resilient; I've had it for over two years now.  It takes a beating.

Cody in my last house in New York, I used to shoot from the Dining Room through the door in the kitchen and down through the play room and into the target in the gargage.  The distance was 18 yards and it was cool. I was only able to do that when I was single as soon as I got married. Like all good things it came to a quick end. My wife reminded me that one miss and I was dead, It was safer to stop shooting indoors after that warning. I never missed before but after that warning my nerves couldn't handle the threat!

I shoot in my bedroom - about 3 yards - no kidding. I use a Rinehart cube, it is a very reliable stopper and lasts lots of shots. Though I cannot learn the trajectory with this short distance you can really focus on your technique. I only use tough carbon arrows for that.

I am relegated to shooting at 20yds in the backyard. I wish I had a basement that I could shoot in. But every morning I go out on the deck and shoot for awhile before work.

When I lived in an apartment I had a long hallway that had a linen closet at the end of it before it branched into two bedrooms. I used to store my two bag targets in the bottom of the linen closet. When I wanted to shoot I just opened the door and shot from the kitchen. I shot over the counter top and down the hallway, about 10-12 yards.

When purchasing a house in an area that had laws forbidding shooting bows in the city limits I bought a house with an unfinished basement that was 69 feet long. I studded up and drywalled a faux wall five feet off of the foundation wall. I put a compressed layer target at one end and hung a door on the other. I had a great 20 yard indoor range in my basement for several years. Sadly, a divorce brought about the end of my personal range. She got the house and I lost access to my range.

I still shoot a shot or two in my basement but now live about 7 minutes from our archery club and its indoor range. I can leave the house, shoot til I am worn out, visit with some buddies and still be back home within an hour.

At home I can step outside, at the office there is a clean 50' hall. Cardboard box stuffed with styrofoam and plastic grocery bags. Behind that is a brick wall and that acts as a great motivator!

Yep and I have the holes in the garage door to prove it.
