Title: Cedar Bow
Post by: RGK on March 09, 2007, 06:36:00 AM
As I look at those stacks of split rail fencing at the local building supply store. I can't help but see a bow in there. Straight grain. Easy to work with. Am I nuts? Is this wood worth my while to make a self bow??

with a thin strip of backing like hickory you should be able to make a good bow

If it is the same material I see at our local Lowes store it want make a good bow!Maybe a very low draw weight bow but I wouldn't waste my time.

Eastern Red Cerar(Juniperus virginiana) will make a very good bow with a proper backing. Western Red Cedar is too weak for bows but will make arrows. What is sold at most stores like Lowes or Home Depot is Western Red Cedar.  Pat
