How do you approach converting or introducing a compound shooter to traditional archery???
I have several friends that bowhunt with wheels but do not have much interest in hunting with trad archery equipment. Now these guys are good hunters and are in search of the Trophy. And even though they are bow hunters want to have the best equipment available. And they believe that the utmost technology will land them that milestone.
Anyway. I have one friend that I feel is an Excellent hunter and that he could take an awesome animal with a stickbow if he would let it happen.
I think I want this more than he does, so what do you all think?? Any thoughts on how to let this fellow score with a stickbow?
Thanks for you time and thoughts!!

A trad bow will work it's own magic if you can get someone to shoot one.You can't force something on anyone.Help them find a inexpensive bow and set it up.Once they start shooting it will happen, if it's in there instinct to go the next level.Hope everything is well Ron.Hear you had a good year.
-
I let them ask me - I'm not on a mission.
-
"THROW THAT SILLY LOOKIN' THING DOWN AND SHOOT A REAL BOW FOR GOODNESS SAKES"
well' that's what I'd like to say sometimes but like hill boy said..."A trad bow will work it's own magic". just get one (a lighter one) in their hands and watch them glow. worked for me.

It's like cars, some like fast and some like the classics. I enjoy using my compound now and then. But as far as hunting I'm not really in for the trophy or the meat, though I would like both. If he sees that any deer you get with your tradbow is a trophy, maybe he will switch.
-
Bring him to the squirrel hunt and let him see people's attitudes-it is in the fun and with enough time the big one will come-at least thats what keeps me going every year. Maybe this year and if not I will enjoy the journey anyway.
-
Walk around with a beautiful bow and have a lot more fun than him....the message sends itself!
-
Its a good idea of to encourage your friends to try one of your bows at a range or informal shoot.
Beyond that let it up to them and you help them if they want it.
-
I certainly wouldn't try to browbeat him into it. I think that would only push him away.
I think the best way would be to introduce them to stickbows in a low-pressure way. Be encouraging but don't push if they aren't interested. Some people don't have the time or desire to pursue trad. But, if you encourage without pressure they may come around eventually. My brother showed no interest a few years ago. But every once in a while he'd shoot mine. This year he decided to get an inexpensive recurve to try. He even took it hunting some.
Sometimes it just takes patience and a good attitude.

I agree with Steve B. Why are you trying to convert them? Regardless, set a good example with your equipment. If it appeals to them, they'l ask for help.

I think this is the best idea. It's low pressure, great camaraderie and real fun. It is hard to convince the unwilling though. I've converted a few in my time with remarkable success.

For sure don'ttry to shame them into trying Trad.
The bit of smugly implying they are lesser hunters because they prefer compounds doesn't work and only makes the divide between the two worlds greater...

Let nature take it's course. If they want to try then nurture the intrest.Don't push it on them.As long as you guys are bow buds and having fun that's what really matters.

Yep Ron, as said above, the best way I've found is just to get them to shoot one. If there's any chance that they'll want to shoot a stickbow, you'll see it when they start shooting.

They will convert on their own if they are truly interested. Otherwise you're wasting your time - been there done that...
-
The most expensive bow, or the "latest technology" wont matter. Its up to the person behind the weapon. Just let them shoot a stickbow, and they will be amazed on not only how much fun it is, but amazed on what your mind can really do without the aid of fancy rangefinders, and gadgets. Its the simple things in life...Thats what got me hooked, and the pure desire to do it the way that they have been doing it for hundreds of years. Keep us posted Ron, and good luck.
-
I'd let him hunt how he wants. Traditional archery takes a lot of time and practice. I wouldn't recommend it for most people honestly.
Why do you want to convert him?
-
Nope.
Nor would I try to convert someone to my religion.
You can invite him or her to shoot your bow, or shoot his own bow on the course with you, or to attend your services.
Pressure results in resentment and resistance, followed by avoidance.

That is a true statement for the most part. I do have one friend though that has a desire to shoot a bow and is trying but he is the worst student I've ever had. I'm considering telling him to try a compound for the different type of discipline it is.
Here he is

This guy does pretty well though.

Why would you want to convert anybody??? Don't make any sense. Shoot what you want and let them shoot what they are comfortable with. I've seen more people switch over to trad shooting becuase they see that we are having fun. You don't have to say anything else and it is their decision without any coercion, as it should be. dino
-
hey bro i would just run his wheel bow over that should do the trick (http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh305/jeffburg/RollingSmiley.gif)
-
Just let him shoot yours for awhile.
That should do the trick if he's interested.
-
You're probably your own worst enemy on this. The more you pressure, the more they push back. I went to a compound for a few years and probably would have gone back if my father-in-law would have backed off.
Eventually went back, but I think it would have been quicker if all the trad guys had just let it be. I never liked the compound, but stubborn is my middle name.
-
Conversions just don't make much sense to me if you have to persuade them.
Have they tried to convert you? Did you give it a try?
-
First get him a bow to shoot. Make it fun but also challenge him. Tell him ya doubt he could shoot well enough to hunt with a stick and string but with practice he just might. Than start shooting with him and give him advice and make him feel confident after a while, I believe he will be hooked. Shawn
-
When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.
-
I agree with some of the others, don't push it on him, he'll go the other way. This was my 1st deer season with trad gear and a couple of buddies kept asking me, you really still taking out the longbow, really, even during the rut??? This made me not want to pick my compound up even more, they kept trying to push me back to my compound. Why?? I have no idea, kinda funny nI was the only one to kill a buck this past season!
-
Give him that Crow Creek for an hour !! That should do it !!
-
Got friends I hunt with who shoot compounds.I never have tried to convert them.Thy have not tried to convert me either. If they wanted to do it they would. They have seen me shoot alot and seen that its an effective tool but show no interest.Maybe its in the blood or its not.
-
"You still got your training wheels on?" :)
-
Seriously, don't try to convert. People hunt for different reasons. I feel that there is more satisfaction when I leave the gun powder and training wheels at home. Like someone else said, let them shoot yours, no pressure, all fun.
-
I don't try to convert anyone to anything. Compounds aren't for me, but stick bows aren't for everyone either. I accept that. No one I hunt with uses a compound, but several of my friends do. That's fine with me.
-
Yep, don't even try. Just let them do their thing, and you do your thing, and they may or may not catch the bug. Three of my bowhunting mates in Katherine have all caught the bug. We'd go target shooting and hunting together, and they'd bring their compounds and I'd have my recurve or longbow, and they just decided that they'd have lots of fun and challenge with trad gear too.
-
Gotta' ask-why would you bother? I mean who cares?
He's doing his thing and we do ours. How would you react if a compound shooter wanted to 'convert' you?
To each his own-plenty of room for us all.
-
I have found as already stated, the stick and string works it's own magic. I have had several people older and younger be drawn to the mystic alure of how "do you shoot that thing". Bowfishing has converted alot. One thing for sure like most of us, usually a person comes to the crossroads of wanting a little more challenge or more fullfillment. Let them see the arrow fly and the mystic path and life of the arrow will work its great magic.
-
The best way I know to have a good time with tradbows under low pressure is bow fishing, stump shooting and flu flus for shooting thrown targets out of the air. Once you are bit you will almost have to try the challenge of a deer or turkey where I am from anyway.

dry fire
-
Better not be a Hoyt you try to dry fire or you may have to do it more times than you think.
-
I think the way I have 'converted' people to traditional bows was by letting them shoot one in a relaxed atmosphere.
I think piking their interest is a better way of looking at it.
However- when someone with a compound has spat in my face: that trad bows are "not for hunting"... well that has led me to comments and actions that perhaps were not correct... but were fun.
Example: when I pulled into a parking lot in a controlled hunt area; I was laughed at by two guys with compounds. They told me that I should not be allowed to hunt with my recurve. I asked if they were trying for a big buck or a buck period.. and they said "any buck". They laughed at me as I walked off.
Later though; at dusk; I met them again at the parking lot; and asked if they had gotten a deer.
"No- what's your point?" they asked.
I tossed them the heart of a buck I shot and told them to notice the hole in the middle of it.
Not the way to convert anyone- and probably not an appropriate thing to do.
I enjoyed it tremendously though....
-
I appreciate all the thoughts and comments so far and I was using the term convert loosely. IF you go back and read my post I said convert or introduce.
I know not to push it on folks and have never done that. I was merely searching for ideas or stories from your experiences with success on the matter.
I don't know that he'll ever take the chance though...

Brian, now that right there is funny. Had the same thing happen to me. Here on Guam to hunt with archery tackle on Anderson AFB you have to pass a profeciency test,6 consecutive arrows in a 9" circle. Several years ago when I did my test, I broke out my longbow and quiver of arrows to take the test. One of the assistant Conservation officers saw my longbow and promptly asked, "Where are your sights" I politely told him "I do not need sights" to which he laughingly replied, " you are not gonna even hit that target" at which I replied, "What do you shoot?" it was the newest jazziest compound. I told him to go get his bow and when I was done with my test I would make him a bet that I could have 3 arrows in the target before he could have one in it. After he watched me shoot for my test he walked away and would not shoot with me,LOL.
Ron just let it happen, if he wants it it will come.

I think he may, just not as soon as you want.I turned my buddy and his younger brother on to bowhunting a few years ago. They both are born and raised rifle hunters, and they love to bow hunt, but not as much as rifle hunting (Because it's easier to empty the mag...   )My buddy surprised me one day while eyeballing and handing my Bear Montana saying,"Maybe I should get a recurve"
Surprised the heck out of me.I don't seriously think he ever will. But he expressed a little intrest in it so I push VERY little.Just occasionaly. :archer:

I don't try at all. Not everyone can stand to have so much happiness and joy in their life.
-
wait for them to go into the woods get set up and there sight moved, battery on the light went dead, arrow rest came loose, peepsight moved, couldn't get a shot off cuz they couldn't cant there bow to get that shot behind them or they dropped it and don't know if some other contraption is out of alignment. sometime ya gotta learn the hard way.
-
Anyone can wack a deer with a compound. Real men use one of these. Here try it.
-
BigRon
I made the switch while shooting 3D shoots.A friend that I shot with bought a older Bear and we would shoot a fun round after the compound cards were turned in. It was so much fun no Binos no pressure if we hit foam that was a 12. That became more fun than the compounds,Haven't picked up a compound In 2yrs still shoot alot of 3Ds though.

To introduce traditional I would suggest low poundage and just let them shoot. They should get hooked liked the rest of us. Don't forget the armgaurd.
-

I only use recurves, but nearly everyone I shoot/hunt with use compounds. If anyone with a trad bow said something this foolish to one of them, I would do everything possible not to be identified with that person. And I would thoroughly enjoy the ensuing show.

It's kind of like flyfishing. Everyone just doesn't get it. It's not really the easiest way. It just takes a certain person.

WOW

You can only show a good example.
If he shows interest and only when he shows interest set him up with a bow and arrow combination that is tuned to shoot good. Let him proceed at his pace. It will either take or not.
-
Reverse pyscology. Keep telling him he has the best equipment money can buy and with that equipment he will surely reach his goals. All the while you are shooting next to him and having fun and successful hunts with your bow. If he wants to go to it then he will. If not he won't.
-
Do you have a extra bow that he can shoot? If so, and he has the interest, I would set him up with a loaner that he can shoot, give him a quick tour of how everything works at the backstop and go stump shooting. If that don't do it, nothing will. Keep it light and fun. Just give him a taste and I'll be willin to bet he'll want more.
I got a guy at work who has the same kinda attitude- "They should ban those things....". He always has to have the new trick or bow out there. I just tell him, the recurve/LB has accounted for more meat/game in our history...
Hard to argue with that point.

Well, here goes, I like the opinions of most of the responses on this thread which say to each his own. I am still wondering if I am the only one who enjoys both traditional and compound bows. There is no reason to choose one over the other if you enjoy both. If you want to introduce trad. to a friend just shoot your bow and have a good time with him/her and if they become interested then great, and if not continue the freindship of bowyers
-
Why?? do you feel comfortable with others telling you, that stickbows are dumb and passe'. That superior archers shoot compounds etc etc.....just shoot.
-
I've never tried to push any of my friends into switching over, but some of them have. I help them with whatever I can when they ask for it. In fact I'm building the best set of wood arrows I can for a buddy of mine who made the switch last year as a surprise. but I never try to make them accept my opinions. Works well that way.
-
I let my buddy "borrow" a bow and some wood arrows. He moved. Hvae yet to see the bow, but now that he is in Texas, he is talking about Javie hunting alot.... sure miss that bow...
