Title: Dean Torges
Post by: pktm on January 23, 2009, 05:23:00 AM
Does Dean ever sell any of his bows. They look like gems. Just never seen anyone shooting one, except him of course.

There was one for sale a while ago in the classifieds.

My dad picked one up for me from there also. It is a great shooting bow...smooth and shoots a nice heavy shaft with authority.

Do not think Dean sells many bows anymore.

I love Dean, smart, witty, humorus.  One of the leaders in wooden bow developement.  He set the standard in what a bamboo backed osage bow could and should be.  I know he still builds a few.

One time Dean wanted a black mouth cur pup from MIssissippi.  It was time for MOJam.  I went way around to Mississippi and picked the pup up to take it to MOJam and meet Dean there.  I told Dean since I had spent so much time with the pup that I should get to name it.  Yep I did.  Named her "DIXIE".  It made me laugh ever time I thought about the Yankee squirrel hunters howlering up "Dixie"!  LOL.

Dean build a fine bow.  I swap a high end Russel Fighting knife for one when we were on a pig hunt to South Texas.

I tried my best to teach Dixie to bay to the tune of _Dixie_.  While she liked the song alot and liked to howl along as accompaniment, she never got the tune on her on.  Dang I was sorry 'em yankee boyz didn't get to hunt squirrel to the wonderful song LOL  :)

I really enjoyed his book, Hunting The Osage Bow", (as well as his site, for some time now) and, coincidentally, just started re-reading it this AM. I also enjoyed your Dean/Dixie story, Rusty - LOL.

I met dean once. He had just released his book and was selling autographed copies at a shoot years ago. He used to write in Primitive Archer mag. I love to read his articles as he is very talented in the use of the written word and his vocabulary is endless. His bow making abilities are second to none. I have seen them and have talked to him on the phone a couple of times. I have seen his bows as well in the classifieds on Stickbow.com being sold by individuals, and they are not cheap, just as it should be. He is a true artist when it comes to his bow making talents. I know he really loves his beagles, too!

Trying to remember- what was it Dean called his bows ? Cool name as I remember.
I've always lusted for one. Maybe if I can ever get Dean to bring me his gun parts for his flintlock something can be worked out (I'm hinting Dean :-)  )

I'd love to have one over any other bow out there, but they are NOT easy to come by!!  He's a one of a kind wonder, and a fine "dude!"

Kinda' tells ya what he thinks of me, huh?

Daryl, got something heading your way in the mail. And no, it's not a bow.   :)

I was lucky enough to pick up Dean's PBS St Louis 2000 Firstyx bow.  It reads:
Yew:
cut by Chester Stevenson
stored by Gilman Keasy
liberated by Jim Fetrow

One of my prized possessions  :notworthy:

One year at Denton Hill I started an Osage selfbow. Dean would look at it and make some drawings.  I'd scrape on it and run back to Dean to see what needed to come off next.  That went on for three days!  Best dang lessons I've ever had...even though he must have cringed every time he saw me coming  :)  Doc

Now there's a couple names I've wondered about for a few years.

Dean used to come on here pretty regular but haven't seen him for quite some time.

Jim Fetrow is a yew bow GOD!  I used to love reading his posts back when the only trad site was the *********** but something happened and he quit showing up too.  I've seen old yew bows that he had "reconditioned" and they were absolutely awsome.

Sad how so many of the old timers who really "made" a site special with their knowledge just kinda fade away.  I know some were plain tired of being called outright liars by newbies who had read a couple magazine articles.  I kinda had the impression that was what happened with Jim and I was told it was also the reason Dan Quillian quit posting too.

Fetrow comes around the *********** when properly prodded.  I have a piece of Fetrow yew.  Mine, mine, mine, like the gulls in Nemo.

There's about 300 kids running around with Torges rattan bows from Cloverdale over the years.

I went to his website yesterday to see if he had any new articles up. I REALLY like the new look. Some good stuff there. As I get older, stories about pressure cookers seem to mean more than even hunting or bow building. Nothing like being a Renaissance Man.And that guy can cook too !!

I tried to get Dean to make me a bow for about a year and a half. I told him price was no object. I got lucky and found one for sale a bought it. I told dean about it. Now I have no chance of him building me one. I had a weak moment, I wanted a new custom flintlock. Luckily no one has showed any interest on the one I have for sale. Well the weak moment is over and it is no longer for sale. I can't believe I was going to sell it, what a dumb a__. I would have been sick when I come to my senses and I no longer had it...

Doc,

I saw that bow before it was finished.  Dean had it at Denton, it was shootable, but it didn't have that beautiful finish that he is famous for.

His website is new and improved.  Looks like he is having some great fun.  Retirement has been good to him.

Dean and Jim are both some of my favorite people though I have never met either in person. Always enjoyed chatting online with both. I'll have to check Dean's web page. Rusty good to see you posting here I have been away from the archery forums for several years, and checked back in recently.

I met Dean before he and Gordy Mickens (of Selway archery fame)were famous at the ETAR.  The came rolling in after dark beside my son and I tried to set up camp in the dark.  For the next two years we camped beside each other and threw around a bunch of good camp talk with him and Gordy.  But alas, they both became famous and soon forgot us little people.

Jason, or any of you other guys, do you happen to have contact info for Jim Fetrow?  I used to have his email and talked back and forth with him fairly often but after one of my computer crashes a few years ago I lost it and as far as I know, he doesn't post on any archery web sites anywhere.  I'd sure like to get back in touch with him again.

He still posts there sometimes; most recently last September.

Shakes, he uses an alcohol-based stain to get that marvelous fade.

I met Dean while when working for Longbows & Recurves magazine. I wanted one of his bows for years, and finally managed when one came up for sale here. Mine is named "Easy", made in '96. It's osage backed with hickory. I hunted with it last season. If I can remember how to post a picture:

I'll probably retire it now, except for special occasions! I'm too rough on bows in the woods, and I cringed at every ding. It'll be fun taking it to shoots and seeing my friends drool.

Dean is the master. He is by far my favorite outdoor writer. His articles require no editing. His book, "Hunting the Osage Bow", is a building guide as well as amazing entertainment. A must-read for anyone who ever thought of building a bow. You can still get it from his web site.

I know of more than a few "Old Sages" in several different disciplines that no longer post on their respective forums, to which they once took pleasure in contributing (but they still lurk frequently), because of the slamming they'd get (usually disrespectful, and from self-proclaimed "guru's" themselves) over the years. They just figured "Why bother." Can't say with any degree of certainty if that's what's happened in this case.

Dean is top-notch, alright. He once took the time, via email, to school me on a few of the finer points of his bow design that I had trouble grasping. I DO recall that it was done off-forum because of the the shouting down from some folks about how what he was saying made no sense. But it did, naturally, make perfect sense and I'm grateful for not only what he said but the gracious and matter-of-fact way he said it. Not only a man of deep and broad knowledge but also possessing an innate ability to share it in easy to understand ways: Darn rare, indeed.

Just my two cents. But civility is too often lacking on most forums by virtue of their being so limited with regard to personal interaction. This site is by far kinder and more welcoming than most, or maybe any others that I've been to. But it still happens. That's just human. So, who knows...
