Title: Who all shoots a recurve and a LB?
Post by: GMMAT on March 08, 2009, 09:15:00 PM
I have a new custom recurve on order, and I'm thinking of adding a LB to the stable.

If you shoot both...do you have any difficulties switching back and forth?

Thanks.

Jeff

Even though I shoot recurves better, I still love shooting longbows.

Been shooting both for about 40 years, though I shoot longbows 90 percent of the time because I just like them a little more.  No problems switching.

No problems at all if the limbs both mount on the same riser Jeff!  ;)

Actually, I now have been pretty much exclusively shooting the LX longbow recently.  But I am thinking hard about an XR or an Arroyo as well and have done some playing around with both.  Given a bow with similar weight, I can switch back and forth between either of them or my LX with no problem at all.

I have other recurves that take a bit more "mental adjustment" in order to make the switch.  Differences in bow weight, grip, center cut, arrow spine, can all make a difference in where your arrow goes.  After a couple of rounds of shooting your mind will make the necessary adjustments and you will be just fine.  But to switch back and forth frequently I think the more you can keep things the same between the two the easier the transition is.

I shoot both and other bows.Never have trouble switching between them.Bows with no shelves and not cut to or past center does take me a few arrows however when switching from recurves or longbows cut deep.

I shoot both and have never had any problems switching between them. The only thing I watch is going from a long amo to a short. If I've been shooting a 68" longbow and suddenly switch to a 58" recurve, I'll shoot it for a day or so just to get use to the difference in stability.
Other than that, its just a matter of my mind adjusting for a difference in weights. The flight characteristics of an arrow shot from an 80# longbow are different than one shot from a 50# recurve.

I'm shooting a 60# Fire fly and a 55# pitsley predator. They seem to like similar arrows.JB

Shoot both, and love shooting both.  I've been shooting my Kanati and Shrew waiting for Mike over at Dryad to give me the good news.

So long as the bows are close in length, I don't have a hard time "re-adjusting" the brain.

Been thinking of getting a recurved bow, mostly for fishing. But still be legal for big game hunting. I started with a T/D bear hunter. The riser cracked really bad and I just got another bow. That one was a Shrew 54" Original. Great Bow and Gave me some Great memories. It is now that I made my first shooter bow and have been using it only. It's a long bow and I really like it.

You'll find that you use one over the other. Don't let that stop you from shooting both bows. You may find that You can get both bows to shot the same arrows. like bawana stated the difference in both and you will have to tune Yourself to shoot both. Good luck.

I shoot both, but I think I shoot the recurve better. For me the recurve is more forgiving.

I shoot both.  My Assenheimer recurve during the winter indoor league and Spring 3D shoots.  Then I switch to my Leon Stewart longbow for the summer and fall. Love both bows!

I used to shoot both but now realize I shoot longbows better, the only recurve that I stil have is my black mountain sheepeater cause I can shoot it as good as my longbows, it takes me a couple hours of shooting to switch, but for me thats with any bow, not just recurve to longbow

Jeff I've shot my brothers longbow a good number of times and I can hardly tell a difference between the 2 other then the fact his Is much smoother drawing and shooting. I could hunt with my brothers longbow any given time If needed. I see myself getting one sometime down the road as well.

I shoot both-- shoot both equally as well, and enjoy both equally.  It is likely, that it is far better to learn each individually, before you get to jumping back and forth between them.-- I can pick up any bow now ( w/in my poundage range) and w/ a shot or two, shoot it as well as any bow that I may have been shooting for many years. Straight long Bow, Reflex long bow, short bows, various recurve configurations- makes no diff.--  Once you do this, the switching is as easy as "falling off a Log."  Its really just a matter of going w/the bow you have in hand--- not trying to make it shoot like some other remembered bow you shot. Its really quite simple, respect the bow for what it is, how it shoots and feels, and don't try to force your will on it.- let it tell you how it wants to me shot.

I have shot both for decades, when I am still hunting or in a big woods enviroment I cherish the days with a longbow.
Probably 80% of the time now I am in a ground blind or tree stand and prefer for obvious reasons the curves.
I have never seen any accuracy difference between them.
The key to me has always been your bow arm, solid with a slight push at your target at release with both will serve you well no matter what you shoot.

I shoot both + a string rifle on occasion.  No probs switching; your hand tells your mind how to adjust.

I hope someday to acquire the time and resources where I can use the same arrows for all three.  As it is, I've got a lot of sticks and straws.

I agree with Whip-if you are just switching the limbs there is very little change. But I look at some of those bows and say:"What's the point?- they are as much recurves as they are longbows." In some cases you have to look close to tell!    :D   Hybrids are great don't get me wrong, but when I really want to capture that "longbow experience", personally I have to go with a Howard Hill type handle and a true "D" shape (when strung at least) bow. That switch involves a little bit of work. Not too much for me but I wouldn't just grab one or the other and go. I'd need to shoot some practice rounds to ensure I felt comfortable again.

As Curveman said hybrids are more recurve, especially the 3 piece models.  The classic design longbow is no more difficult to shoot than any other bow.  Just get used to the feel of it and you're good to go.

I shoot both. Like shooting any new bow it takes a little for the internal computer to get used to it.  I can switch from one longbow to another and it takes 15-20 shots before I get dialed in, but that it the only issue.

Your biggest problem will be deciding which one to shoot at any given session    ;)

I shoot both.  Somehow magically my two go-to bows shoot the same arrows at the same point of aim so there is very little adjustment between the two.

Shoot both...but I have my longbow grip very similiar to my recurves so there isn't much difference. I could never shoot a standard longbow grip well. My longbow is also center cut with a thunb rest for positive hand placement every time.
I do favor the recurves...just more comfortable shooting them.

I shoot a 60" Predator recurve, a 60" Kanati and a 62" Whip without a problem. I usually bring all three to the range with me so they all get a workout.

I bought a longbow in Jan and said I would commit to a 6 mo. trial period with it (no recurve) Well we are in the third month with the longbow and I cannot go back to the recurve till the end of June. Things are going great with the longbow I really like it after 40+ years with a recurve. Soooo I will have to get back to you in June. Stay tuned.

I don't know if it's the difference in length or what but to hit the same spot at the same yardage I can't shoot 3-under with the 'curve like I do with the LB.

I myself shoot both and have my longbows cut slightly past center. This way I shoot the same arrows, tips, etc. Now my longbow is a one piece and I shoot a takedown for a recurve. Longbow limbs on my takedown shoot the same. IMO.

I am like Whip, I shoot only RER bows and I have an LX and Arroyo and an XR, since they all are near the same weight and have a very similar grip I shoot the longbow as well as the recurves. The thing I love about it is with the LB being 3#s heavier I can shoot the same exact arrow set-up out of all of them!! Shawn

I shoot both with no problem. I can say that a more deflexed riser seems to be more important to consistent accuracy than the limb design, and recurves tend to have a more deflexed riser than longbows. On my longbows with deflexed risers, I shoot them just as well as a recurve.

I started my traditional (Feb. of 2007) journey after 23 years of shooting a high wrist compound.

I always liked the way a longbow looked so when I made the switch I bought a Martin Savannah.  It has a locator grip but is well...a longbow grip, now I know why all latest compounds have low wrist grips.  At the tail end of the first year I bought a Kota Kill-um recurve, 50's style recurve with a longbow style grip.  Loved it and could switch back and forth no problem.  Ordered another Kill-um last summer and got it in January and haven't gotten to shoot it much but love it.

Well then I met JD from Whisperstik last year and hunted some with him last fall...talk to him a lot and he let me in on his latest project.  It’s a three-piece takedown that you can get with either LB or RC limbs or both.  It was a no brainer and he hooked me up with this:

I have the best of both worlds now...I just got it this weekend and I've only shot the longbow limbs so far, I've shot the recurve limbs on another one of his though.

I will continue to shoot the longbow limbs for a while and then start shooting the recurve limbs.

I can switch back and forth no problem…my Savannah has a smaller radius than my Kota’s but I can convert easily.  The Kajika Stik is always going to be the same, switching shouldn’t be a problem at all.
