After reading countless threads from you guys on stump shooting, I was intrigued. So, my Hex Heads arrived in the mail today and off go the field points and on go the Hex heads and, I'm off to the woods behind the house. First shot is at a short dead branch laying on the side of a small hill and I cracked it right in two! It became addicting right from the get go. I had a great time and it sure beats shooting the same targets over and over. Just thought I'd share. :bigsmyl:

It's a great way to practice and a hoot when you get a group together.
-
Ya know, I NEVER went stumpin' when I shot wheelies. Never even thought about it. Nor did I ever even think about shootin' aerials either. AH, Trad is the only way to go. Ain't nuttin' like stumpin' on a Sunday afternoon.

We have about 60 acres at our local archery club and I love going out there during the week when no one else is there. I just wander around shooting all of natures wonderful targets. Pine cones, sticks leaves, old rotten stumps ect... You just can't beat it! Some of the cheapest entertainment going in a sluggish economy.

I know where Whitehouse is! Piney Woods and yes you do have plenty of targets! I've been there many times. That would be agreat place to stmp shoot.
-
Well, good for you. It's a good way to get some exercise and do some scouting. Jawge

Got ta love stumpin
-
Its the only way to practice....various distances, shooting from all angles, standing, kneeling. Improves your ability to look at something and quickly judge the distance. The best part...its never boring.
-
Nothing better than stump'n! I agree, it's by far the best practice.
-
If I never hunted again, I could live for stumping any and every day.
-
I get a shot at a ground hog every now and then when I'm out. I like moving hog targets.
-
I was at a buddy's shooting and when I let one fly over the target, I had to go find it. I took a couple of arrows with me and shot cactus. Fun stuff! I can't wait to get some arrows just for "Cactusin'".........We ain't got no stumps in West Texas.

Good times, good times and excellent practice, if thats what you want to call it, I call it good times! :archer:

Best practice you can get I'd say.I grab my curve and my buddy grabs his compound and we head over to one of our local haunts.Such a great time.

You fellas shoot woodies at stumps? I have tried it but, broke some arrows. Maybe I am doing something wrong
-
huey, try hardwoods. Also, you learn quickly that a solid stump is not really a good target, unless you LIKE breaking arrows and pulling them with pliers.
I almost never shoot a stump while "stumping". That's why I like to call it "roving" instead. By far the best practice for hunting!
-
Don what do you shoot? I usually make my arrows out of pine, although I did break one cedar with an oak foot.
-
Woodies is all I shoot. When I first heard the term stumping, thats exactly what I thought, just shooting at stumps. In my neck of the woods all the stumps are Bois D Arc, Pecan and Oaks and they are very hard and the sun just dries them out. So, I shot at small dead branches, dandilion heads, small mounds of dirt etc. As I continued to look, I started to notice the targets are endless and they are everywhere. The woods here where I live are a haven for Copperheads and I will start looking for them when its STAYS warm enough which shouldn't be long I hope! Its been in the 70's and low 80's here for a few weeks however yesterday I woke up to snow! UNBELIEVABLE! Today its supposed to hit 70 again

roving is the best 'tune up' for hunting - in fact, if ya take the approach that you *are* hunting those wily stumps, deadfalls and bushes, so much the better. a good stickbow, a few judo arrows, and yer good to go!
-
huey, I shoot barreled poplar shafts that I used to make under the brand name "Superceder". Any of the hardwoods make tougher arrows than any of the softwoods (POC, pines, spruces, firs).
-
JoeVT and I went out yesterday and did some stumpin'. I had fun........what about you Joe, you have fun?
-
I guess I will have to pick softer targets, but there is not any dirt around here just rocks.
-
Mark, I know all about that crazy Texas weather!

I shoot split hex shafts & really like them, they will take a head on hit on a solid stump & not break. I've tride aluminum & carbon, I get bent aluminums with the insert shoved back into the shaft & broken carbons with the insert shoved back into the shaft making it look like a banana. I'm sticking to woodies. Frank

When I was shooting Barrel tapered ash, I never broke one of the stumpin. Since my supplier went out of business, I shoot swagged aluminum. Every now and then a missed shot slams into a rock and ocassionally, the swag will bend. I just cut off the swag, install an insert and XL Broadhead adapter and keep shooting.

I made a mistake today and shot two arrows at the same clump of weeds. The second robin hooded the first and split it in two :banghead: Thats the first time I've done that with trad gear!
