Title: Which wool Bibs
Post by: Jack Whitmire Jr on March 29, 2009, 10:23:00 PM
Which wool bibs are the best Sleeping indian, Hidden wolf or KOM. Are there other top of the line bibs available? The humidity here makes 20 degrees colder than other places IMO. Anyhow lets here your opinions.

By Hidden Wolf I think you mean Gray Wolf, the current name.  They are a sponsor here, and you can check out the website from the sponsor links above.  You've listed some good quality wools - Gray Wolf is right up at the top, and the customer service is fantastic.

2nd that, Grey Wolfs wool is much tighter and the cloths are specked to you.

If you are going that route - make sure they are lined with something. I have an expensive pair which are unlined and you can feal the wind on windy days.

experimented with lots of wools this year, Grey Wolf Woolens, Woolrich, and Columbia. rraming said it best above..... Better make sure it is lined ! If not lined then it better be a premium wool like Grey Wolf, otherwise the wind will get ya. All the wools we tried were warm on calm days, but in as little as 10mph wind the Woolrich was cold. Columbia was next best and the Grey Wolf even without a liner was top notch. My son has a Grey Wolf bomber jacket and riding an ATV at 30mph the wind would not come thru.

If I was spending the $$$ for SI, KOM, or Grey Wolf I would buy it lined. It is a major investment that you buy once and why worry about spending that much and have the wind blow thru.

The other thing we noticed is the thickness versus nap of the wools. Columbia and Woolrich are high nap, looser weave, thicker, verus the Grey Wolf tight weave. Seems the higher nap looser weave might seem warmer, but it isn't !!! Better bow arm clearance too. JMHO

Out of everything out there, I agree Filson gives you the most for your money. I have bought a lot of wool jackets, pants, bibs over the years. King of the mt is good but way too over priced. The same for Sleeping Indian. Great stuff if you don't mind another morgage payment. The weave on the Filsons wears pretty hard, I have set of bibs that have about 8 seasons on them and the only maintenence I do is pull burdocks off at the end of the season.

I own both SI and Grey Wolf.  My $0.02.

I believe the SI is warmer. The material is a woven cloth that has a fair amount of loft to it.  It's woven fairly tight and is a superb insulator.  The Grey Wolf is more of a felt material that does a better job of blocking the wind, but lacks a bit in the insulation department as it has less loft to it.  If it's above freezing, I wear the Grey Wolf.  But on days when it's really cold (below 30 around here), the SI gets worn and the Grey Wolf stays home.

One zippers on the filson bibs to take a pee, no zippers on the legs (I have them - unlined and exspensive). Work well until windy

I have the Filson wool bib overalls. Work great here in our Newfoundland winter. They are pricey though. I have had mine quite awhile. I bought a 2nd pair in case they ever stop making them.

I know they are not wool but Natural Gear Wintercepor bibs are windproof, quiet, much lighter then wool, warm, and warm when wet. And cost 1/3 of what wool does. I wear wool pants if I'm moving around but for sitting for hours on end, these bibs get pulled on.
