work has been kinda slow so I decided to make a few loc on type stands. used an old stand that I had and really like as a pattern. got some 3/4" square tubing and a sheet of expanded metal, dusted off the welder and got to work. I had to make a die out of a 1/8" welding rod to go on a rebar bender i have to bend the tubing. I think they turned out rather nice. Don

Great looking stands

they look great Don! I bet one would look even better hanging in an oak tree where I hunt with me sitting in it.
:archer: :biglaugh:

Just what I was going to say. I'm still using mine like that after 20 years!!
They look great Don!!

Excellent. One of my favorite stands. Is that foam pad on the blue seats. How many stands do you hang in a year, cuz that's a lot of extra?
-
"turned out rather nice"...boy I'd say  Wanna sell a few????
-
The foam is from an old broadhead target.
I usually hang about a dozen or so, but since my boys are hunting two legged deer now, I guess I could get by with less.
Yeah, I know what you mean about the 20yr thing. I bought two of them. had one stolen years ago and the other, I left in a tree after the season went out and I think It got water in the tubing and froze and split the verticle tubing.
One feature I like is the ability to fold the platform up against the tree. makes it easier to hide. Also I like the higher seat highth. 18" on mine. thanks for the comments. Don

well done!!  :clapper: :clapper:

don they look awesome

Congrats they look very good. The design looks close to a Screaming Eagle, design. Should be very effective design, good luck.

Very Nice work, :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:

Excellent work!

I had a welder friend extend the back rails to raise the seat. The guys that design tree stands must have really short legs. I'm only 5'8" tall and have short legs and every stand with an attached seat I've bought, the seat was too low.
-
They do look like screaming eagle stands. Would you consider building some to sell? (to me)
Mike
-
Before I read that you built the WHOLE thing I just thought you made the seats. Those looks great and im sure there better quality than most of the ones available too! Nice work!
-
Great job on the stands!! I've been building my own for many years as well and yet have I saw a store made stand as solid as mine In the tree. But I may purchase the new Muddy hang on just for the hell of It to see how solid they are. This would be my 1st store bought stand ever.
Once again, great job on the stands.
-
They look just like the ones I made in 88. My brother and I still use them. I think they cost about $12 each back then. One modification we have made we got rid of the chain on a couple and use poly rope around the tree. These are the ones we use when gong in and setting up and not looking to leave the stand in the tree. I think mine weigh about 7 lbs per stand.
-
Schultzy, tell us about these Muddys!
-
Nice work. :notworthy:

Great Lookin Stands, Don!!!

Don
Just like we talked....could you hang one of them nice stands for me under a heavily loaded acorn tree. I prefer right hand shots....(LOL) :D
-
A few friends and I did up the same style stands about 10 years ago. Made around 30 of them. We didn't have the equipement to bend the square tubing, so we found a place that could. Was a good investment. Yours look great.

Let me know if you would build to sell a few as I would be interested?
-
They do indeed look like the Screaming Eagles...as many have said. That was my first stand in '86, wow a few years ago. I grew up on a farm and had a welder at my disposal, made a few and go figure the only stand I've ever had stolen was my original Screaming Eagle
.
We still hunt from one of the clones I built in the late 80’s…heavy stands but solid to say the least.
Nice job!!!

how about a build along or at least some pics of the gear you used.
-
Have you tried hanging a VW from one?
-
Thomas, no not yet, I'm fresh out of VW's around here.LOL
Bill, I wish I had taken a few pics as I went along, but no real secrets anway. I just used the old stand as a referanc and measured off it. tubing is 3/4" 16ga steel. used a miller welder set on dc+ at about 32amps and 6012 3/16 rods. (mig would be the way to go if I was going into prodution, which I don't plan on). The real trick was bending the tubing. I happen to own a Hatachi rebar bender/cutter. I use it to bend rebar in footings for house foundations. tried to bend the spuare tubing and it didn't work. I was able to take a 1/8 welding rod with the flux taken off and line it up center of the inside of the bend in the bender and it worked nicely. You need about 3 hands to do it, but I made a couple of stands to support the steel and managed to getter dune. DB

looks good! those are popular stands, my hunting buddy an i made about 20 of those of the same pattern 5 yrs ago.. we love them!! ares don`t have the cool camo
-
Very nice tree stands! ;)
-
looks like the old screaming eagle stands too short used to sll.
-
Looks good,I made my own alot also.I made mine to work off logy's tree mount.Put mount to tree, stand in mount put a ratched strap around the bottom your there.I laged the mount to the tree then you can alway go back and remount a stand if need to.I also used the small relastate signs for the bottom frame.I must have had 15 at one time I them for 15 years.A breeze to put up and down. And I could put a lockon the pipe that went thruogh the mount to hold the stand to the mount it was up under the seat .So it could'nt be gotten to.Most teives will leave home made stands alone.
-
Very nice work!
-
Don, nice job! My question is the cable supports, what type of attachment, cable crimp or clamp as I don't have a crimper. Thanks and Good Shootin!
-
What kind of rod did you use? I prefer 7014
-
frank, I used cable crimp sleeves. borrowed the crimper from a farmer around here. He uses it on his cow fences.
carbon arrow. 6012's but a mig would be much faster and neater.
-
TTT..... some guys have all the talent.
-
Excellent work...! Welding is a skill I wish I had learned.
-
Don,
Could you list the price and the materials you used to make those lock-ons? How about a blue print? I have a hunting budy who welds.
Doug
-
WOW i wish i could do that, those are great!!!!!
-
Darn nice Don.
-
Man!!! where did this come from? I make these stands with a stick welder. Since them I got a small mig welder and that is really the sh////t for this kind of work. In fact , all the stands in the pic have been modified to hang like the chippiwaw wedge lock stands. I just made some wedges out of flatbar stock and welded it to the up rights, then cut the top bars off and made the chains out of 3/16" cable and chain and cut up some boat trailer rollers on my band saw. It's a slick way to hang the stands. Just go up and put the chain rig on and then hawl the stand up and slide the wedge over the cable. You can search wedgelock stands to get the idea. I got about 31 dollars a pc in them not counting my time.
Joey , send me your wants and I get it done for ya. gonna cost ya in the long run.lol Don

Great looking work. I like the big platform!

Got it finished today. Going out in the morning be interesting your take on my little project. We will probably have to get a patent!
-
Looks like you did a great job on building those stands.
-
Nice!!!
-
What are you using as steps.
The stands are GREAT but, hard to use if you can not reach them.LOL
Many options. Love the wedge attachment system.
-
Yep, I still have my original Screamin' Eagle stand hangin' on the wall in the basement. Too good of a stand to ever get rid. Kinda heavy, but solid as a rock. You did a good job on 'em.

thats the spirit, surrond them :archer:
