Title: Blinds and Dave Smith Decoys should be outlawed (oh yea turkey down)
Post by: Onestringer on April 21, 2009, 10:54:00 AM
It was my turn to hunt this morning.  Right after light I had a tom working but a hen intercepted him, with that look in her eyes.  You know the one I am talking about.  The "How you doin" look.  Off they went to the wild yonder to never be seen again.

Around 8:00 I am doing some soft calling and a jake enters the end of the field.  He appears to be looking for the sick hen, not love sick, just sick.  I can't call worth a darn.

He spots my decoy, now I spent $120 on this decoy and it looks like the real thing.  I begged Mindy to let me spend $500 on the stuffed hen decoy, but I lost that battle.  The jake inspected my decoy from a distance, to make sure the funny sounds it was making was not due to a STD.  Satisfied, the jake heads my way.  Apparently my decoy has that same "How you doin" look.  He comes right in and circles my decoy twice.

So there he is thinking this is his lucky day, he tries to mount my decoy.  As he is on top of it I say to my self, its now or never.  Slowly drawing my bow, picking what looks like I good spot.  I send a steelforce turkey head his way.  Now for you guys out there, just how would you like to get shot, just as you are beginning special act of procreation.

My arrow strikes right where I am looking, and that poor boy flops around wondering what the heck happened.  A short run and its all over.  The turkey broadhead did its job, the arrow stayed in and he never even tried to fly.  He never had a chance.  Blinds and good decoys make all the difference in the world.  If I can do it anyone can do it.

Its has the ugliest fan I have ever seen, but I don't care.

I'll say this to you and every other hunter that's scored on a turkey with his traditional bow......

Coming from the compound world, recently, I view the taking of a spring gobbler with traditional tackle as the ultimate accomplishment (for non-exotic game that most everyone can pursue).  The NA wild turkey is an extremely worthy adversary to the bowhunter.  He's a mammoth trophy to the trad tackle hunter.

My hat's off to you.

Nice work! I flung an arrow at a turkey this weekend only to have it shave a feather off of the bird's belly! It's harder than it looks!

Congrats on a traditional bird!

Dave's decoys are awesome!  I have a hen and will add a jake next year or the feeding hen if he gets it to production.

Nicely done     :knothead:

You spend too much on the decoy and didn't have money left over for what she was asking!!!  "[dntthnk]"   You'd think you could get the inside friends and family discount.

Nice bird by the way…

Josh

P.S.  I hope to send one of my arrows with your awesome wraps into a bird here in a couple of weeks (18 days to be exact).
