im about to buy a montana from a fellow tradganger and i want to do a few things to it. 1.one thing is cut the limb tips down. i know they're bulky and sorta long. so besides cosmetics, what will this do for performance? 2. should i use just a plain flemish string or fast flight flemish? 3. is it hard to "trape" the limbs? and if not, how do you do this and what does it do performance wise?
after all this is done, its going to lonnie to get dipped:)

1. Narrowing and reshaping the tips (and the last few inches of limb) will remove mass exactly where you don't want it. Don't know how many fps you'd end up gaining, but you'll definitely feel the difference after the shot. The bow should be tamed pretty good after that with the handshock reduced considerably.
2. The bow can handle a low-stretch string and it's quieter with one. No reason I can see not use one.
3. Trapping the limbs will reduce the weight and change the tiller if you're not careful. Unless the bow is too heavy for you why bother? There's no real gain.
4. (OK I added this one) Reshape the grip. The last Montana I held had the feel of a 2x4 in my hand. Reshaping the grip and the tips should turn it into a decent bow.

I like the dip idea, probably get mine dipped over the summer, I beat it up pretty good this past season! I tell ya, my Montana is a real shooter, as far as hand shock, there is none, pretty darn quiet as well! I did put a lace up leather grip on mine and it gave it a better feel, more bulk which I like!

I did not short'n my tips but thinned them, made them more pointy. I shaped the grip to my likeing and painted it camo. I use FF strings with woolie whispers. Great bow thats as tough as nails. I have 2 a 50 and a 55#.
